    In regards to Robert De Niro, I’ve always found one of his best and most underrated performances to be King of Comedy. One of the few times in his career where I feel he really played against type, and I thought he absolutely killed it. I wish he took on more roles akin to that one

    My picks for overrated actors:
    - Paul Rudd (he's exactly the same in every movie and just not interesting to watch, no variety, just playing the same goofball over and over again)
    - Bradley Cooper (at first I didn't mind him in movies, but at one point he got this idea that he's going to show everyone that he's "an artist" and now he just comes across as pretentious snob)
    - Emma Watson & Jenna Ortega (I really don't get why so many people are obsessed with them: they're exactly the same in every movie and so painfully bland)
    - Pete Davidson (I can't explain, but his presence just annoys me. It's one of those loud and obnoxious people you meet at the party and immediately want to go home)
    - Seth Rogen (his entire schtick is "I'm a bearded manchild that smokes pot, watches porn and curses a lot, because saying f*ck six million times in one minute is funny")

    The problem with trying to rate "Overrated" is that many of them, like DeNiro is that they did good work early and fell into a dependable groove where they just repeat themselves. My nom is Leo DiCaprio. I know that if he has to do an emotional scene, he's going to do the same scrunchy face he's used for decades.
    I think this is largely an American problem too. The English grind their way through drama schools doing Shakespear and low-budget productions so they've got a wide variety of roles under their belts before they hit and seem better able to adjust their performances to the character, instead of adapting the character to their abilities. DeNiro just reads his lines anymore, where you watch someone like Tony Hopkins in "Westworld" and even though he's not doing much physically, he uses inflection, pauses, subtle changes in facial expressions and gestures to convey a character watching your every move. DiNiro should be ashamed he's coasting on his rep instead of challenging his skills.

  • @Bigfrank88
    @Bigfrank88 Před 3 měsíci +8

    I'll concede that the later stretch of De Niro's career is disappointing but I'd say that's the case with most actors of his generation. His 'big four' with Scorsese. Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, King of Comedy all in under a decade is one of the all time great actor / director streaks. Add Godfather II and Deer Hunter in that same stretch alone puts him up there with the best to ever do it.
    All due respect, saying Noodles is similar to Travis Bickle is insane. Bickle is a dude who is delusional doesn't understand social norms; Noodles is a street guy who steps over whoever (especially in the films most horrifying scene) but still expresses a sense of disillusionment with the world he fits in and these aspects are communicated through the performance. The two don't maneuver scenes or interact with other characters the same way at all.

    Just because you play Italian-American tough guy doesn’t mean all characters or acting was same. In casino de niro catches his wife planning his murder and throws her out of the house doesn’t hit her once in raging bull he smacks her for smiling while talking to men. In Irishman he is a timid and survivor not the alpha in the room like in goodfellas, check out the number of time he stutters while talking to his seniors in Irishman. You can play an Italian gangster in 20 movies and it can still be different

    • @perryjones7771
      @perryjones7771 Před 2 měsíci

      With Sydney I do think that she is a decent enough actress. She just needs to pick roles to her acting strengths. She wasn’t even convincing in “Anyone But You” sis didn’t believe a single like she was saying especially the “I think they’re trying to get us together”. She seems like she would thrive in horror and art house films. I would really love to see her work with Ari ester or Toni Collette I feel like they could bring out something else in her. Shes so stuck in this sex symbol arc right now and it isn’t helping her. I have a prediction that she will undergo a physical transformation and really commit to a dark character in the vein of Charlize Theron in “Monster”. Sis needs a new team cause this ain’t it at all. Her performance in “Euphoria” season two really shocked me I didn’t know that she had THAT in her sis went OFF. She needs her “Monster” moment I know she has it in her to give a performance of that caliber.

      Yeah, she's full of it tbh. DeNiro's not so famous for his looks, there's a reason, it's because he's brilliant. The end of his career saw a bunch of hot garbage movies which he clearly just took for the money. Almost everything now is junk hack writing usually all self-aware with awkward comedy and a cringeworthy obvious agenda, all of which completely destroy any suspension of disbelief whenever trying to watch most modern movies.

He has made some gems such as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Godfather part II, Goodfellas, Killers Of The Flower Moon...but on the other hand, he made duds like Dirty Grandpa, man! How do you reconcile the two things? :) Anyway, still love him to bits, but he has acted in way more duds than your Pacinos or Nicholsons, in my opinion.

    De Niro's range? Early on, astonishing. The dude in Mean Streets is 180 degrees removed from Taxi Driver, who is nothing like the dude in Godfather 2, who is nothing like the dude in King of Comedy. He's just made a ton of shitty, pedestrian movies. He's been making movies for 50 years. He clearly loves acting. He ain't a writer. If there weren't so many shitty writers around, he'd get better scripts, better characters. Since the 70s, the good scripts have been few, but every so often he gets lucky, like getting to play the 'terrorist' who fixes things in a world where nothing works in Brazil.
