I can't ever recall anyone comparing either of these two to Merryl Streep or Kate Winslet or Gary Oldman, etc. so I don't know that I could call them overrated. They get lots of work I suppose because they are extremely attractive and do a decent job in certain roles. That may be frustrating but its not being overrated in my book.

Overrated means someone that is decent or good at their job overall, but they get too much credit. Nobody is rating Cavill or especially Gal as being great actors. Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep are overrated.

I wouldn't call him as an actor overrated but Robert DeNiro's performance in Goodfellas has always been super overrated to me. People always praise him for Goodfellas but I never thought he was that great in that movie and was just kinda playing the character in the most straightforward predictable way possible, which is especially disappointing when you see how much all the other cast members are totally bringing the heat. Standing alongside Liotta giving the performance of his literal career and definitely one of the most psycho Joe Pesci roles, you'd think DeNiro would do something a little more inspired, but instead he kinda phones it in. I'm ready to get skewered for this!

Yeah, Deniro coasted more than once by giving a patented, expected character portrayal that he already used playing past characters. He’s great but it’s still an extension off all her other roles were she plays a moody teenager. She has not shown range as Euphoria is constantly the only thing that’s brought up to prove her acting ability. Even Sydney Sweeney who is smaller in stardom shows more range when you look at her filmography. An actors skill is based on their portfolio diversity and how well they perform.

    • @dessmi9184
      @dessmi9184 Před rokem +6

@@tds7078 but a small instance doesn’t mean he’s not overrated. Timothee has a lot of potential but Call me by your name is the one everyone goes too for his acting ability without looking at his whole filmography. Him in Dune and The King is basically the same performance. In ladybird he doesn’t have to emote and falls into the same aloofness in little women. He was outshined by miles in bones and all. His celebrity status has pushed his career further then his acting compared to an actress like Florence Pugh who’s performances and diverse portfolio are both matching in high quality regardless if the movie she is in is bad. Like I said I think timothee has potential and I’m excited for dune pt 2 and especially Wonka which I think can show his true stardom but as of now the huge “stanning of him” doesn’t match his performance.
Timothee and Leo get compared a lot. Call me by your name would be Timothees what’s eating Gilbert grape and timothee is in his heartthrob “Titanic” era but like how Leo did he needs to distance his self away from that. I believe you also need to see a decent amount of films in a given era. You must also understand your own taste, how things affect you and your own personal biases. For all we know he may have gone on to become a great actor, or just another flash in the pan. Probably the latter. Dying at a young age tends to have that effect for celebrities. James Dean was a star, not an actor. As a star, he cornered the market in handsome but grumpy young men who are just so terribly misunderstood by society. As an actor, he was laughably bad and one-note in his performances. He might have seemed edgy and dangerous to 1950s audiences but not now. I'll be honest, as a kid, The Rock was never one of my favorites (I always cheered for the bad guys like Triple H to beat him), but as I've gotten older, I've grown to respect his natural charisma and entertainment skills a lot more. I don't think he always picks good movies; in fact, I would argue most of his movies range from crap to okay. But he doesn't seem to be a negative attribute in these movies; if anything, he has great self-awareness and a likability that aids the movies he's in. These days, I kind of like him more as a wrestling star than a movie star, but he's a worthwhile A-lister for sure.

I find Laura Dern really underrated. I was watching a movie called Bastard out of Carolina. Really sad movie about child abuse/poverty in the south. But I kept getting pulled into the story by the narration. I thought, "That lady has a really nice voice/interesting accent. I need to look it up later and find out who that is." Turns out, it was little ol Laura Dern from LA. LOL And I remembered she was in that great Eastwood movie A Perfect World- which is set in Texas. That lady could fit in anywhere.
I think Aubrey Plaza might be overrated. I think I like her as a person. She's really interesting, and funny. But there are some roles she's played where she just sticks out like a sore thumb. I think I feel the same about Zooey Deschanel. She's interesting, nice, funny, but her acting choices often feel off. Funny, when it's not supposed to be, inappropriate, underacted a lot of the time.

I am a huge believer in Kristen Stewart. It's kinda embarrassing because she got all that teenage love a decade or so ago for the Twilight movies (none of which I've seen). In fact, I think I've only watched her in two movies, Clouds of Sils Maria and Personal Shopper, but in both there was something magnetic about her. She really blew me away. It's her presence, like you said, her moment to moment nuances that mesmerize me. I bet I could watch her performing just about any mundane task and I'd be transfixed. To me it feels incredibly subtle and natural. That said, Olivier Assayas is a creme de la creme director. I wonder how she comes across in a special effects bonanza like Charlie's Angel? Would I still dig her? I don't know... Maybe I'm scared to find out... Haven't seen Crimes of the Future. Sounds interesting.
Other off topic topics: just finished Paris, Texas. I've previously seen The American Friend (masterpiece! A favorite: 10/10) and Wings of Desire (overrated: 8/10). This one felt more personal than those two. The beautiful lines breaking across each wide open space had me in awe every twenty seconds. I enjoyed the metamorphosis from quirky surrealism to buddy movie to understated ending too. At first I was questioning the lack of chemistry between the former husband and wife. I thought it was bad acting, which I always hold the director responsible for. Then I realized, that's the point: this guy doesn't fit with other people. He's sacrificing himself to bring the kid and mother together again. Pretty cool. I got some heavy Lynchian vibes, especially since Dean Stockwell (loved his grounded performance) is in this and Blue Velvet. Guess me, Wenders and Lynch all have something in common: we aren't cut out for fatherhood 🙂. Also, I felt like the odd couple scenario driving the movie's first half inspired Rain Man. My rating: 10/10. Haven't watched your review yet. Will do that next.
Please watch French Dispatch soon. It's a gem that happened to come out when nobody gave a damn about movies. You owe it Wes!
Lastly, are you excited for Beau is Afraid? Ari Aster has got skills. I don't think he's a great director yet, but I could see him making the jump. Hereditary owns the ten most disturbing minutes in film history in my opinion. Too bad it turned into a typical horror film for the second half.

As for Lynchian, it's strange that musician Lana Del Rey released a new album just a few days ago, and there's a song on it with the title "Paris, Texas." I say strange as I've always found her music to be Lynchian, that off kilter, slightly disquieting Americana, so it's like a happy confluence of some of my favourite things.

That will be different for different people, so having a common definition to center on is helpful. And second, I think it's also important to not allow positive/negative attitudes or feelings about the person impact the assessment of whether he or she is an overrated actor. For example, I work in the medical field. There are some surgeons who are nauseating aholes. But if I need surgery, is that going to come into play as to whether or not I choose them to perform the procedure? Absolutely not. I'm surprised this video is only 14 minutes, there are so many overrated actors. Having said that, Dwayne Johnson is highly rated because he isn't just an "actor"..I think he brings a lot to the set other than his performance (he is a hard worker, has a good attitude, and promotes positivity on all his projects). He is a versatile person and that is something that goes farther with producers.
I haven't seen much of Kristen Stewart, but I think the Twilight Series was a tough one to begin her reputation as an actor. Have you seen her underwater film with the Cthulu-like monster?
Pedro Pascal is fantastic in Game of Thrones and Narcos, but his political comments hurt his image, especially when Gina Carano made similar remarks (but happened to be Conservative) and was removed from the Mandalorian. Sadly, Pedro got a bump with his liberal friends and now really is cast in everything which contributes to people getting tired of him.
Laura Dern was great in Blue Velvet and Jurassic Park, but Inland Empire was a bit too jurry-rigged regarding filmmaking (even for Lynch, makes Eraserhead look like a Hollywood production) and SW Last Jedi was horrible for her image as a respected actress.
Jared Leto...Requiem For a Dream, Fight Club, Dallas Buyers Club such a good performer. His Joker performance though hurt him so much because the movie flopped.
Great video. thanks for all your work with these, you have a balanced outlook on these!

Pedro Pascal is so succesful because women absolutely obsess on him. He has got that rugged dangerous look but also comes across as almost fatherly. He is like Tom Hanks in a way, he just shows up on set and acts like Pedro Pascal delivers his lines and it works. There is a lot to be said for that.

Dwayne Johnson has his moments, but no in the big movies he's done. Hobbs and Shaw was a wild ride with an excellent performance from Johnson. Kristen Stewart is becoming a better actor now that she's more comfortable in her own skin. Her off-beat movies are where she's the best. Laura Dern is finding her roles in the latter part of her career.
