    Anatomy of a Fall had the single best "cut" of any movie this year. The moment where we abruptly cut from the footage of the argument to the audio being played in the courtroom as soon as the fight escalated to violence literally took my breath away. It was like a really well executed and built-up jump scare in the form of an edit. Not the first category you'd think of for the movie, but that particular scene was THE moment of the movie for me so I'm very stoked for the editing nomination.

      I hope it beats Oppenheimer at the Oscars for film editing. I think Anatomy of a Fall has the best editing from last year. I don’t think Oppenheimer should have won especially considering I think that movie should be 30 minutes shorter.

    Yes!!! From your mouth to God’s ear, Cillian Murphy for the Oscar. We have watched the film 6 times since July and every single time we are (wait for it) blown away. The performance is nuanced, he draws you in with that incredible eye-acting, and we love to watch how he expresses all the conflict, arrogance, naïveté of the man with just his facial expressions. If he doesn’t get the win, I’ll tear my hair out!

    I’d love to see Paul Giamatti win an Oscar one day for a role that feels completely new. The Holdovers just felt totally in his wheelhouse of his usual bag of tricks. It didn’t feel challenging or interesting or different. He’s great in it like he is in everything but I wasn’t blown away. I found Dominic Sessa to be the showstopper & Da’Vine Joy Randolph to have the incredible storyline.
    I think Cillian Murphy is unmatched this awards season. No contest! How he hasn’t been sweeping is baffling to me. The level of commitment he gave to Oppenheimer was extraordinary. He carried the film, he embodied the person he was playing & he gave the performance of the decade while doing so. His acting was top tier. Never seen anything like it. Love the video, and enjoy hearing your takes! Couldn't disagree more with your cinematography pick, though. I think I'd rank Oppenheimer in last among the five, it's shot in the same way as many of Nolan's films, standard medium close-ups throughout and very few shots that particularly impressed me. I actually prefer Maestro's cinematography (that oner during the conducting scene, or that first black and white shot of Bernstein's silhouette before tracking him into the concert hall are two stunning shots in that film).
    I think I'd personally go with Poor Things, its approach to filming Emma Baxter, with its usage of fish-eye lenses for example, I thought displayed some of the more innovative cinematography choices of the year.

    I'm so torn in regard to Best Actress - I really liked the Gladstone performance and think it would be the worthier win (yeah PC choice whatever but the Oscars has always been as much a popularity/vibes contest as a pure 'best' assessment) but there's no denying that Stone's performance is just stratospheric and she totally carries the film, being the centre of attention for 90% of the runtime, unlike Gladstone's lesser onscreen time. If only Gladstone had been nominated in Best Supporting Actress, that's a more suitable category for her role and she'd be a shoo-in (sorry, Da'Vine). I do agree that Stone's recent win might handicap her but on a pure comparison of which role is more demanding/integral to the film/distinctive then Stone should have it in the bag - honestly, I didn't think that she deserved it for the overrated La La Land, I would've preferred Negga or Huppert, and if Stone hadn't won it then, no Academy voter in good conscience could deny her their vote this time.

    When thinking cinematography, I think of the lighting, lens choice, composition, angles, color grading, artistic flare and overall aesthetic. So for me, that’s Poor Things.
    For editing I think pacing, tension building, narrative, cohesion, sentiment, emotional buildup, overall delivery of the story. For me, Oppenheimer falls short in several of those. It could have been way tighter. For me Anatomy of a Fall delivers there. Good editing delivers a well told story that moves.

    With regard to the acting categories, so far, best supporting actress is the only one I've seen each performance. I agree that this race is between Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Emily Blunt, but I also really enjoyed the heart of Jodie Foster's performance. I would probably vote for Da'Vine Joy Randolph. I've seen most of the supporting actor performances, and though I agree Robert Downey, Jr will win, my favorite performance was Ryan Gosling in Barbie. I also really loved Annette Benning in Nyad, and I'd like to see her win, but to be fair, hers is the only lead actress performance I've seen so far. I loved Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer and Paul Giamatti in The Holdovers. I'd love to see them tie, but since a tie in the acting categories has only happened twice (I think), Cillian Murphy will probably edge out Paul Giamatti.

      So, yet another Nolan snub? You knew darn well this time it wasn't going to happen...LOL However i do agree with most other picks, especially Ruffalo! RDJ's performance in Oppenheimer was way overrated and he wasn't nearly as good as a support to lead actor/actress in his movie as Ruffalo was in Poor Things!...I feel like it was just another "Honorary" oscar, rather than deserved one, similar to how Di Caprio has won his a few years back...

    I think another undeserving career Oscar win in recent years besides Jamie Lee Curtis’s Oscar win is Laura Dern’s Oscar win in Marriage Story from a few years ago. I hate that win. I think it’s even more undeserving than Jamie Lee Curtis’s win because she starred as a despicable and hateable divorce lawyer. Not to mention, there was nothing special to her performance in that film. Not to mention I was annoyed she won an Oscar for that film yet the best female supporting performance of that year Zhao Szhuzen from The Farewell wasn’t even nominated.

    The fact that McNamara stripped the novel from its framing devices, that allowed the reader to always be questioning what they're reading and from whose perspective, speaks volumes regarding his approach to the film + the male gaze and I personally would hate to see a win for him. It was based on characters from Mattel. Whether they were toys or not doesn’t matter, because they still count as characters, the same sequels are always adapted screenplays despite being original stories. I think that Paul Giamatti really really is going to win. I get the critic that he is doing the "same character" in Every movie. But first of all we can say the same thing of Katherine hupburn and we love her for that. Second i think that without paul, the Holdovers dosnt work. He is the glue of that movie. Everybody and Everything works un the movie because of Him. ITs a masterclass in acting what he does

    • @lehcaraz1
      @lehcaraz1 Před 3 měsíci

      Do you really think Cillian doesnt have to be great for a three hour movie to not fall flat on its face? Talk about glue. Cillian is in 95 percent of every scene. Holdovers is a ensemble piece with Paul playing Paul. Cillian is steering the entire movie. Talk to actors and find out what they think a masterclass in acting is. Cillian is lauded for being a masterclass thespian. He is at home on the stage, or film, or streaming as in Peaky Blinders. Much more diverse actor than Paul.
