I'm from Utah and while I grew up eating jello and cool whip, I would say most people do NOT eat it much. Dessert is a big part of our culture though since most people don't drink alcohol or coffee so it's our party food. :) In my experience, the most common dessert you find is chocolate chip cookies or brownies with ice cream.

Jello salad is a popular side dish at barbecues and family get-togethers, which people do a lot of here. Somewhere along the line, people found out that Utah is the state that buys the most jello, and it's basically just been a meme ever since. Utahans joke about eating lots of jello, but I don't know anyone who would consider jello their favorite dessert.

New York cheesecake is NYC's dessert. I've had it in the city and it's amazing. But in the rest of the state, one of the biggest ones is the half moon cookie. Not to be confused with NYC's black and white cookie (thin shortbread kind of cookie), completely different textures. The half moon is more like devil's food cake, pillowy and moist, with vanilla butter cream on one half of the top, and chocolate butter cream on the other half. Most bakeries here make them. You can usually get a vanilla cookie or chocolate, I prefer the chocolate.
