As a Texan, I can say that BBQ is **really** popular. But, I don’t care if it originated in Texas or not, Texans absolutely cannot get enough of their pecan pie. It’s sweet, full of cinnamon, and of course, pecans. It’s absolutely amazing and I’m really disappointed that they didn’t add it because it’s literally our state dessert.

I'm from MD and can confirm our love of blue crabs, albeit most people I know would rather get a dozen steamed crabs and pick it themselves than get a crabcake just because picking crabs on the bay is a fun nostalgic activity. I suppose crab cakes are usually preferred by tourists/people who want to stay clean/'civilized' meals haha. Seriously though, if you come to MD in the summer, go to Cantlers or Mike's crab house near the bay bridge, you wont be dissapointed

I saw a few comments mention that New Jersey should’ve had the sub or deli sandwiches. As a lifelong resident, I completely agree. Local deli and sandwich joints are everywhere. Jersey Mikes, QuickChek, Sam’s Deli etc.
One thing I do appreciate about NJ food is, if you’re up in North East Jersey, you can get Pizza pretty much on par with NY in a lot of spots.
If you go down to more Southern Jersey, you can get a Cheesesteak (almost) as good as some spots in Philly. Due to a lot of people from those bigger cities migrating over.

South Carolina person here. Although it's not my favorite, I can understand picking Low Country boil, even though it's probably not as specific to SC as it is to the coastal southeast US.
However, I do feel like grits could have been a better contender. Not shrimp and grits - as far as I'm aware, that's just a very regional specific dish that's sold in the beach town restaurants. Just plain, regular grits. That stuff is great. Sure, a lot of southern states eat grits, but it just feels more representative of the whole state than Low Country boil.

Californian here. Pretty sure most Californians wouldn't agree with avocado. Each region has its own specialty, but In-n-out burgers and burritos are pretty ubiquitous and beloved across the state (could also make an argument for wine as a high-end state favorite).
Yes we like avocados, but we grow all kinds of produce, including 90%+ of America's almonds, figs, olives, kiwis, dates, pistachios, walnuts, etc.

Yeah. That would be like making Wisconsin's state food beer. Yes, Wisconsin might be known for its breweries (I mean, their baseball team's called the Brewers), but people across the country drink beer, and beer's brewed across the country and across the world. Same for Californian avocados: Avocados are enjoyed across the country and sold in supermarkets across the country. For comparison, something like the Sonoran dog of Arizona or Chicago's deep dish pizza are local staples that aren't found throughout the country.
