  • I decided to start working on the new-to-me Cub Cadet 1811 I picked up last weekend. The Kohler Magnum engine had not been run in a couple months due to problems with the carburetor and fuel system, and would only run for a couple seconds at a time before flooding itself. The previous owner "rebuilt" the carburetor because it apparently had a bad float, but once he reinstalled it on the tractor, he couldn't get it running. After replacing the fuel lines, I investigated further and realized this Kohler Magnum engine had a Walbro fixed-jet carburetor. I just decided to buy a new replacement carburetor instead of trying to make the crappy old one work. The Walbro carburetors never work properly on these old Kohler engines; they always seem to make them run poorly.
    I bought a cheap replacement carburetor off eBay brand new, and before I could install it on the tractor, I had to swap the choke shaft from the old carburetor and ream out the hole on the throttle arm so that the throttle cable could hook into it. I then installed it on the tractor, and it fired up as soon as I turned the key. Aside from the throttle and choke cables being out of adjustment, it ran great.
    A few minutes in, however, disaster struck. All the old gas that I had poured into the carburetor in my previous attempts to start the engine had mixed in with the oil in the crankcase, and when I ran the engine wide open, it spewed the gas-oil mix out the breather tube and made a mess all over the engine. I suspected that the fuel pump diaphragm had a hole in it and was letting gas leak into the crankcase, but that wasn't the problem....luckily I didn't have to buy a new fuel pump!
    I cleaned the mess off the engine, flushed the crankcase with fresh Rotella 15w40 diesel oil (my preferred oil for old opposed-twin engines), changed the oil a second time with fresh Rotella oil, and replaced the oil filter. Once I got the throttle and choke linkages adjusted properly, the Magnum engine fired right up and ran perfectly! The next step is to clean the whole tractor and start doing the rest of the tune-up (plugs, air filter, hydro oil/filter, grease, etc).

    Not gonna lie I'm really impressed that 1811 is turning out to be a really decent tractor! That ending was perfect by the way Lol

      Haha glad you liked the ending, I knew someone would get a kick out of it! And yeah I'm actually really impressed with how this project is turning out. Despite a few roadblocks in the beginning it's really shaping up to be a good running tractor.

    Awesome tractor

    That's a nice unit, always liked the shaft drives! Carbs are finicky, usually the only ones for me that actually work when done being rebuilt are the Briggs Quantum carbs and whatever they call the newer ones with the plastic carbs. I need to find a Chinese version of the carb for the 345, its got like a thousand linkages and hoses that run to it or in front of it.

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  Před 6 lety

      I've worked on a couple Briggs I/C single cylinder two-piece carbs but never a v-twin carb. A plastic carb just sounds like a disaster waiting to happen, especially with the ethanol in the gas nowadays. I've never done carb work on a Kawasaki so I'm not sure if they sell a cheap aftermarket Chinese carb for your 345, but there ought to be one out there somewhere.

      The plastic ones are called a (Nikki 6) they are a pos I have one on my craftsman the engine pops darts backfires surges and sputters and the engine is fine but that carb makes it run horrible I like the Briggs walbro carbs they are a good carb for the single cylinder Briggs they seem to work well I had one on an ic pull start 8hp the engine was smoked but I got it to run thanks to my local lawnmower shop asked if o wanted a few used engines for free so I followed him to his shop and loaded me up and the carb on it is a good one I have a 12 hp one the carb was filled with rust I cleaned it up but it was trashed my buddy gave me that engine when I fixed his engine so walbro is ok Nikki is junk but it really depends on the engine and your application

      I knew I was buying an ugly machine but I had faith in it that I could get it running good. It sure is a nice running and driving tractor, I just wish I had a deck or something for it. Glad you liked the ending. lol

  • @joshuaryanferguson3702

    i got a problem with my 1811 were if i have it at full throttle an try to go full speed the thing just boggs down in idle basically an it wont idle either any ideas

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  Před 2 lety

      Probably a plugged idle jet. Most likely the carb needs to be cleaned, but if it has the Walbro non-adjustable carb you are better off just throwing it away and replacing it with the adjustable type.

  • @lwoodt1
    @lwoodt1 Před 6 lety +1

    Looks like a fun project. Nothing major needs to be done , just a bunch of little things as usual. Any plans for paint ? , or just fix the running gear.

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  Před 6 lety

      Yeah I figured it would be an easy project and would shape up nicely. Replacing the carb wasn't too difficult. I wasn't planning on painting it, mainly because it has no grill or side panels and I don't plan on buying those for it. But I am going to pressure wash the tractor and hopefully remove all of the residue from the torn-off hood decals. The hood looks really ugly with the residue all over it.

  • @amerlin388
    @amerlin388 Před 4 lety

    Surprise the 1811 has a fuel pump. With gas tank above the engine and the fuel filter style, thought it would be gravity fed.

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  Před 4 lety

      The gas tank is above the engine but the shutoff valve is in the bottom of the tank which is below the carb. I'm not a big fan of the fuel pump setup on these Kohler opposed twins...they were notorious for dumping gas into the oil.

    • @hunter7476
      @hunter7476 Před 4 lety

      MichaelTJD60 do you have a suggestion to fix it because my wlabro carb on it is totally rebuilt runs excellent but it will flood of you don’t turn off the fuel is there a way to fix it thanks

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  Před 4 lety

      @@hunter7476 I would never run one of those Walbro carbs. Turning off the fuel is never a bad idea but you might be better off in the long run just replacing it with a better quality Carter or Isavetractors carb.

    What oil do you recommend for a kholer k301

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  Před 3 lety

      Any detergent, low-ash SAE30 should be fine. I currently run Pennzoil but will be switching over to Amsoil or Kohler-brand oil when I rebuild my K341.

  • @BioHazardra
    @BioHazardra Před 6 lety +2

    I hate messing with carbs. You would think that cleaning one thoroughly would get it back into working condition but a lot of the time it really doesnt. I think that they make them with weak metal pieces inside that just erode away to nothing over time. Soaking a carb in cleaner should clean any kind of gunk out of it so eroded parts is the only other explanation. I also do not like running 10w30 in air cooled engines. I run Castrol GTX 10w40 in pretty much everything. I do run 10w30 in my liquid cooled Kawasaki that is on my John Deere x540 though.

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  Před 6 lety +1

      Yeah carburetors are one thing I am not skilled at. The smallest piece of dirt or gunk can mess everything up if it gets into the carb. Out of all the tractors I've owned and worked on, I've only rebuilt one carb successfully. Like you said, the trick is to soak the carb body in ultrasonic cleaner for 24 hours and blow it out with compressed air. I hate running 10w30 in these small engines except for vertical v-twins like the Kawasaki in my X570. It was broken in with JD Turf-Gard 10w30 when new, so that's what I run in it. On the other hand, all my old Kohler and Onan engines get either SAE30 or 15w40, nothing thinner.

    What kind of fuel pump does it have, it is a mechanical pump or a vacuum pump? If it's a mechanical pump, the diaphragm could have pumped fuel directly into the crankcase if it was not sealed properly or was cracked. The only other way it could have pumped too much fuel into the motor is if the float sunk in the carb, but it didn't sound flooded, so who knows. Hopefully it won't give you any other issues.

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  Před 6 lety

      It's a mechanical pump. The previous owner said the float had a hole in it, so he replaced the float, but with a Walbro carb it's just not worth the effort. The reason it was flooded was not because of the fuel pump, but because I had dumped so much gas down the carb trying to get the thing to fire up last week (before I replaced the carb). It obviously wasn't burning off all that gas, so it had to go somewhere.....which was the crankcase.

    • @jdtractor7525
      @jdtractor7525 Před 6 lety +1

      MichaelTJD60 yeah that makes a lot of sense. The walbro carbs are fine, when they work. I personally like Mikuni carbs on small engines. That’s what my 5hp Kawi’s have on them. Very expensive, though. Heck, my car even uses a carb lol.

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  Před 6 lety

      Yeah I've heard some good things about Mikuni carbs. They can all be a headache sometimes, but at the end of the day you really can't beat the simplicity of a carbureted system over a fuel-injected system. I've never owned a tractor with EFI but someday I want to pick up a JD 445, X485, or X585.

      I bought the carb on eBay, they can be bought for less than $20. Just look up Kohler Magnum 18 carburetor and there will be plenty of results.
