  • Despite a couple nor'easter's that have hit us lately, the Spring season is right around the corner, so we will be mowing grass in a few more weeks. I'm currently on spring break, so I've been working on the Cub Cadet 1811 getting it ready to sell. I'm actually really impressed with how nice this tractor turned out!
    Since the last video, I've tuned the new carburetor and gotten it dialed in properly. I got a hold of an air filter cover (since the original one was missing), and while I was at it, I replaced the air filter and spark plugs. The hydrostatic pump on the transaxle was whining pretty bad (I assumed because the oil had not been changed in a long time), so I removed the rear cover gasket and found dirty oil and some sludge build-up inside the housing. I cleaned the sludge out, changed the filter, installed a new gasket, and filled the transaxle with John Deere Low-Viscosity Hy-Gard oil. I don't recommend substituting a different oil than what Cub Cadet recommends, but the Low-Vis Hy-Gard is essentially the same product as Case IH Hy-Tran oil, and both the Cub Cadet and John Deere garden tractors of this era used the Sundstrand 15U series hydro pump, so running Hy-Gard instead of Hy-Tran isn't really a problem.
    This 1811 was an ugly-looking tractor when I first brought it home. I was originally focused on making sure the tractor was mechanically sound, and I had no plans to fix it up cosmetically. But my plans changed when I attended the Lebanon Valley Indoor Classic Tractor Expo in Pennsylvania last month: I brought home a good-condition grill and taillight lens. I replaced the taillight lens and both bulbs, and I installed the grill with new latching springs, since the original springs were bent and broken. I expected a pair of engine side panels to be rather expensive, but I found a cheap pair for sale on eBay, so I picked them up. After spending a couple hours degreasing and pressure washing the whole tractor, and removing all the oil, grease, and moss(!) buildup, I installed the new side panels. It sure looked a lot better with side panels on it!
    The last thing I did to the tractor was replace the seat. My local Cub Cadet/New Holland dealer wanted $140 for a new seat, but I found out my local Case IH dealer sold the same seat for only $80, so I quickly bought one and got rid of the crappy old seat.
    This 1811 is a nice original specimen of a machine, and should make a good workhorse. I hate to get rid of it, but I have no use for it, and my other tractors need attention too! The 1811 is an awesome tractor and is pretty tough...I wish I had a sleeve hitch for it because I would take it to PA Plow Day. But it was great to be able to own a tractor from the "82-series family".

    Thanks for posting this video. I just picked up an 1812 with only 309 hours. You’ve answered a lot of questions that I had and you also went over several things I hadn’t thought of. Thanks for the tip on IH Hytran vs the John Deere hydraulic fluid and filter. 👍
    Cheers,
    Whipple

      No problem, glad I was able to help! Good luck with the 1812. Sounds like a true survivor with such low hours.

      @@MichaelTJD60 I live in western PA. Not a lot of Cub Dealers with old stock around me. Can you give me the contact info for the Cub Cadet Parts guy you go to? Thanks! Merry Christmas!
      Cheers!

    That thing is really smooth and quiet!

      Yeah it really is a smooth runner! I love the sound of it. Having the side panels on it REALLY quiets it down.

    That thing does run great! It’s hard to beat a well tuned opposed twin.

      Agreed! Horizontal opposed-twin engines are my favorite.

    Hello, just started watching your videos and I appreciate the knowledge you spread. I got a 1995 265 for $300 last week. It ran rough but drove great so i put some time and money into now it runs great and starts easy and everything. Do you have any advice on it or things I should look out for? Thank you.

      Thanks for subscribing! The biggest thing to worry about with that era of JD equipment were the flimsy plastic hoods. They break really easily, so if your hood is still intact, just be careful opening and closing it. The upper and lower hood sections can be bought new on eBay in case the old hood breaks. Other than the hood, I can't really think of any major issues those tractors had. The 240-320 series were really durable tractors for their size.

    Can I Install a 3 point hitch on a jd 316 and also can I convert the snow blade from my 212 to the 316 by adding the hydraulic cylinder?

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  Před 6 lety

      Yes and yes. If you have a closed-frame 316 (Kohler), you might have a hard time finding a 3-point hitch because they are somewhat uncommon, but an open-frame 316 (Onan) 3-point hitch is much easier to come by. You can mount the 212 blade on the 316 but will need to weld a couple brackets on the blade frame so you can mount the lift cylinder.

      Well fortunately the one I might be getting in a couple of days is a 1990 with the 18 hp onan

      Also where can I buy a 3 point hitch?

    • @MichaelTJD60

      Check your local craigslist. You can buy a brand new one from rueggmfg.com, who I highly recommend.

    I have the same cub cadet, I was wondering what kind of rear end oil do you use?

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  Před 6 lety

      They recommend Case IH Hy-Tran, but I use John Deere low-viscosity Hy-Gard. It's basically the same thing, and these old Cub Cadets use the same hydrostatic pump as the John Deere garden tractors from that era, so I just buy the John Deere oil and filters. They are a bit cheaper too.

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  Před 6 lety

      I wouldn't recommend any other type of oil, though. Stick to either the Hy-Tran or Hy-Gard.
