    So what you're saying is that it's unsafe, too heavy, none of the tools work correctly, regular bits don't fit in the driver and it stacks up unfavorably against similar competitors? But it does have a good chissel! Got it!
    Gerber shoots their own foot again. Seems like another idea that started off cool and then they just cut every corner until the product became uncool. At least Gerber is consistent.

  • @miguelmal
    @miguelmal Před 2 lety +15

    Crazy to call it “lockdown drive” and not make the driver lock. It should lock straight and at a 90 degree position and it’d actually fit its name. Real disappointment from Gerber here. Also awful deployment design, the awl is rendered nearly useless by that “thumb stud” if that’s what it is. Having to put so much effort just to deploy the tools makes you wonder what they did from 2019 until now regarding quality control and testing. Your assessment is accurate, these seem too unsafe to recommend and one shouldn’t have to be modding tools to make them safe or usable, that should come from the manufacturer. Thanks for the video, I definitely won’t be getting either of these.

      @@maxlvledc sure sure. I am now questioning if I should also order the Lockdown Drive. I intended to order it once my Pry arrived to see if I could somehow forego the awl in favor of fitting scissors in it to make an ideal tool. . . • @livnbiggr3482
    @livnbiggr3482 Před 2 lety +4

    Okay, not to stick up for the tools, but a few observations from your handling:
    -I’ve seen many knives that don’t deploy well with applying pressure on it. This can in face lens to some design flaws, but seeing how this works, it doesn’t appear that it is supposed to be a one-hand opening. There wasn’t a ton of testing and consideration on deploying it that way.
    -yeah, looks like the tab is odd and can get in the way, then you mentioned using a nail nick. This would indicate two-hand opening then as well.
    -the flip side is, you mentioned a shallow tab, but you were able to open a few other implements much easier. Looks like the depth isn’t the issue, but probably the tightness.
    -we all know Gerber Chinese stuff needs some babying, some attention, and some break in. Seems odd we’re expecting (also odd that we shouldn’t expect it) smooth operation out of the box. I bet some lube and some work-in period would give us a better understanding of the true tolerances. Also, the coated tools always stick more.
    Just some thoughts. Thanks for the review.

    • @maxlvledc
      @maxlvledc  Před 2 lety +3

      Ive had a lot of cheap tools...this is far and away the most difficult tool I have had to open. Also, you are correct I said nail nic in the context of what they could have done. None of those tabs are designed to be used as nail nics. I had to resort to using 2 hands and treating the gap between the tab and the frame as a "nail nic" to get it out. If that makes any sense.

    Gerber shouldn't try to compete with what people already carry, that is, a knife and a Victorinox and-or Leatherman. Instead, they should try something to "complete" the better brands. The best take would be a pry bar & utility blade as in Prybrid, but with a bit holder and maybe a chisel and a serrated blade - everything lockable with a nice pocket clip and lanyard hole. I believe that such a "completing" multitool would be a success in workplaces everywhere - ad long as it's well made.

    Leatherman needs to add the bit driver to the t4. Make the eyeglass driver as a scale tool. Alternatively, victorinox needs an update for one handed opening. How does gerber not go bankrupt with products like this? The only thing I would still buy is the dime and only because the ps4 costs 2+× more.

    • @maxlvledc
      @maxlvledc  Před 2 lety +1

    idk what is it with gerber and making super bulky tools that are just hard to use. it's like they don't test the stuff they make. i had a gerber centerdrive and the knife was so hard to open, even with both hands. then if you wanted the other tools, you had to deploy the pliers, fold out all the tools, pick the one you want, fold back the tools, then slide the pliers back in. wtf! who the hell designs this stuff! gladly went back to my leatherman OHT and it's been great ever since. maybe gerber knifes are decent but their multi-tools are useless.

  • @aa-ron2781
    @aa-ron2781 Před 2 lety

    It is actually easy to open when you actually “use your shit” it breaks in rather easy. You can’t just open Amazon boxes with it, you have to actually use it for it to break in. It is relatively cheap, so don’t expect perfection when buying this tool, you are buying a worker not a custom tool.

    It really makes no sense to add stuff to the blade without facilitating one hand opening, and that shortened single cut file is hot garbage although at least you get the chisel i guess.
