- Modding the Gerber Lockdown Pry.
I would NOT recommend for someone to buy this tool just to Mod it. I find pleasure in fixing things and seeing if I can make improvements.

I feel like Gerber and Leatherman should do a contest in which they ask their consumers to design the multitool they would like to buy. The best prototypes would be produced
That's sadly not their business...I know that sounds crazy, but it's not.
Not only does it work better it even looks better now good job buddy
Your commitment to your content is unmatched and most appreciated.
Got the notification and was watching first video on my lunch break and now this!
Awesome work!
Glad you like it!
Hopefully Gerber see this and start working on a 2.0 version
they wont even supply speed steel replacement cutters for the MP600...after all the complaints...yea...I wont hold my breath. I rag on Leatherman..but SOG and GERBER are SOOO much worse.
@@maxlvledc the cutters are meant for cutting and stripping small gauge wire. Hence the name “wire strippers”. I asked Gerber about the cutters, and yeah, they aren’t meant for cutting nails. I’ve cut everything up to fishhooks with mine and they have been fine. I have had my leatherman rebar cutters chip on me however.
@@hunterglaspell5580 mine chipped cutting a paper clip
Interesting little mod you've done here.
The way you finished it to disguise any marks from the mod is actually an improvement and looks really good.
There's no doubt about it matey, you're the best. You actually found a solution & improvisation of a tool made by Gerber at risk of the guarantee. It's a privilege to watch the master at work. Thank you for sharing your expertise. If you ever want to move that tool, I am willing to buy it off your hands. Greetings from Australia.
You can have it for cost of shipping, reach out to me on IG
I've used the Leatherman Skeletool for such a long time on our farm, that I see this and think... oooh, a pry tool in my pocket? How wonderful! But, then I actually watch the original video you had where you couldn't open the thing and come back to this, my oh my, it's just too much. The majority of time I'm actually needing my Leatherman are the times I'm in a tight spot with both hands and need just a quick tool right fast. Not being able to open it one handed out of the box means I'd just throw it away, or try to return it. Ultimately, cool mod I guess, and it's an option for those who have this tool, enjoy it, but want it to open a bit more. I've always been okay with Gerber, and still am, just definitely wouldn't get this one.
Neato! Now I have a guide for whenever mine decide to show up
black paint at the points of friction might be the problem. Remove the paint, polish the surfaces, reduce the friction, doing that should create some microspace convenient for oil even. You can add height to those studs with superglue and baking soda, refine those and paint them black with a permanent marker... I don't know man, but at this point it might be worth a shot.
That pry looks pretty dope. Awesome. I want my pry to work like that.
Great improvements, I do pretty much the same with all my EDC items.
You could file/grind those thumb bars off drill holes thru the blade/tools and with M3 countersunk bolts attach your own thumb studs. they sell them on ebay and other online stores.
I probably would...
Gerber usually makes good scissors, except the armbar imo. Love seeing your mods man! Really hope in the future gerber can step up their quality control department. Love the innovation that they do just hope they fix the quality for when the dual force comes out😂
Nice mods I was thinking polishing up the areas that are in contact at the pivot holethat black coating might be hindering the movement I love to modify my knifes and tools theirs always something I want to change about a tool or knife I own
Thanks for this video! Won't lie, I really like the form factor of the lockdown pry, been looking for levelage bar for a while and then I saw it on discount (no doubt thanks to all the negative reviews, Cheers!).
I don't care for the knife so I'm happy I found this video so I can take it off, just having the replaceable craft blade is good enough with all thy other tools. But yeah, shame about the tabs, if I really needed the knife I guess I would be disappointed. But oh well, have a gerber centre drive for years as my edc pliers, so I'm used to the quirks. Just need something smaller when I feel naked without it.
Imo, I have more confidence in a Victorinox spirit pry than I do with this thing
I would like to see a company like leatherman or gerber that builds multi-tools customized to your needs, like you go on the website and choose what you want your tool to carry. That would be awesome!
Good job man! They could take a few pointers and pay you to make some good tools for them haha
As always, love the videos :)
The light is much better in this video I couldn't see the other one
Ok Gerber, pay this man for the design fixes he came up with to fix your untested tool.
It's funny that I can deploy the blade one handed without much problem. Am I flicking it open? No, but I can open and close it one handed. When I have had many issues with blade deployment on several other Gerber knives and tools. Some have the frame lock so tight that I have to manually modify it. In any case I love what you've done with the scales, and wonder if there is any way to manually do something like that with mine?
What’s the pry bar with the hex head screw driver inserted into the end?
Its Called a Vero Fulcrum Mini
I finally got my Lockdown drive in today (still waiting for my Pry), and I’m finding that after making the thumb reliefs in the scales larger to make the studs easier to operate, I wish the locks had a bit of like a tab that protruded from the side of the frame for better grip.
Thumb Relief...couldn't figure out what to call it🤦♂️
@@maxlvledc at least you were still able to get your point across. Lol
I have lots of ideas to modify this tools, mate. Lots of! There's only 1 small matter: i dont have this tool yet 😅😁
Would some pivot lube helped? Also may take some time for it to just break in?
Sadly no...
I would have blackened the scales before polishing the raised areas like you did to draw attention from the dremel work a little bit, maybe with a heat treat and quench in oil
Could you put other parts off a gerber multi tool on t I wonder Like I did with the Leatherman curl I change the file for saw 😊
Not likely, and probably not worth it because the frame isn't that great
gerber engineers, please see this and fix it. This guy is offering you charity.
Very nice
I feel like I would scrap the one hand capability, and just remove the tabs and expand the holes for 2 hand opening or after market thumb studs...
Either way...it's a lot of work...and completely not ok stock
I really would like to get the one with the bit holder I use that more than a prybar. And some how add an oxygen tank key which I also use a lot at work.
Hmm, that would be a fun mod! I could grind out a leatherman blade to be an O2 wrench
@@maxlvledc that would be sick.
I'm just here for your algorithm
Nice execution on the mod. Shame it could have easily done by Gerber with thumbstuds that blended with the scale.
I still waiting to see you put the gerber ambar drive bit in a leatherman wave or a surge.
It's coming
Was it worth it? I’m going to wait for the half off sale when people don’t buy them just to fix one up like you did.
Fuck no...it's a fun challenge for me..but even at $25 I'd probably skip it
@@maxlvledc I know these videos are for the content but you actually make it look manageable instead of tedious. Maybe I have too much time on my hands and infinite patience. I would be interested in the give-away should you decide to grace us plebes with one of your masterpieces that you mod.
@@analogmatrix1442 that's because I got the frustration phase overnight years ago lols
Hey Max! I have a challenge for you…. See if it’s possible to flip all the tools around on a Wingman, Surge, etc and try to make one that’s left hand friendly??? Is it possible or are there tolerance issues??
It's the back part of the tang...it's angled so it won't lock up right
Dude, where did you get that tool?!
what tool?
@@maxlvledc That pry tool/driver?
@@tesau315 it's a vero Fulcrum
@@maxlvledc Sweet, thanks!
Can't you shorten the tumbstuts?
Then I would struggle to deploy them.
@@maxlvledc ah oké. I thought, maybe the flesh of your thumb would grab it when it would be the size of a thumbstud.
People @ GERBER … 👀
How to use an expensive new Gerber Multitool*:
Step 1: Buy a Leatherman to fix the quality issues.
Step 2: Give up.
*Dremel not included.
Lols!
the fact that it is called the lockdown and every tool does not lock is awful. the file chisel, scissors and hobby blade holder if they will fit in vic and leatherman will make this tool good for modding.
Just an awful execution on a decent concept. I wish I had seen your videos before I got excited and ordered both models from Gerber. Like you stated in the first video, the weight and size doesn't make sense for the tools provided. I'd happily take a little extra weight and have double or triple the tool set with more usable features and better operation. These are sadly going on ebay and maybe someone will want them, and If not, they'll end up in the toolbox drawer I call the land of misfit tools.
Why not return them?
@@maxlvledc yeah, I suppose that would make sense lol. Maybe with enough of these returned, Gerber will realize they done f'ed up
@@joshuaconklin4885 I would guess they will still make a huge profit
"Why would you go through the effort of attaching these bars when you could have just made thumb studs?" Now that's the question. These are even worse than discs attached to the spine. They are obstructive without adding value. Nice job trying to fix this dumpster fire of a multi-tool but sometimes, garbage is garbage.
posted email on IG. Cheers mate.
