Gerber Lockdown Pry - Best scissors on a Gerber in a long time!

- The Lockdown Pry still has some, what I consider, design flaws from a usability standpoint. I am certainly not fond of the thumb studs they have chosen to incorporate on a number of the tools. However, I find this version of the Lockdown a little more to my liking because I think this tool might work as a complimentary tool to certain users.

I want to like this. When I look at this, I think about my painting box. Over the last year I’ve done a lot of work helping people move, making small repairs and painting. A lot of painting. If I had my way, I’d keep the x-acto blade, keep the scraper (with a diamond file on the other side), replace the blade with a hooked package opening tool, replace the scissors with a driver and it would be so handy for me. Scraping off tape, opening packages and boxes, opening paint cans, prying out nails….I can see this little tool being so useful if only they would fix a few things. I’m very tempted to buy this and a few others to get the tool set I want and seeing if I could modify it. It’s a great concept I just wish they would have thought it through a little more.
I really like your idea and I would definitely buy one as I do a lot of painting also. Gerber needs to make it and call it the lockdown painter (and pay you a royalty for your idea).
@@tonyrome655 That would be cool!
I have the Lockdown Slim in grey/black and I love mine. They’re super handy anytime someone needs something cut. I pull it out and pop out the scissors to cut it and I always get asked where I got it. A lot of people love the idea of a knife and scissors that can fit in a coin pocket. It’s nowhere near as intimidating as a knife or multiplier. Granted my state is Open Carry so I don’t worry about that stuff but for most people, especially those who live in densely populated areas, this could really come in handy for them.
Awesome idea they got with the exacto blade - i agree -i just got my first multitool and its a basic GERBER but the main weekness is the scissors! -scissors are so needed so often that it has me looking to try another brand - they’re on the right track with this concept as a multi tool for painting projects -all your critiques are spot on -EXACTO + DRIVER + BEST SCISSORS EVER + KNIFE + PRY BAR = what we all want!!
Great review . Glad your back Ben . 🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸
Looks like it would be ok for warehouse workers or decorators. Not sure I'd buy one but it's going to have a use for someone. Good video 👍🇬🇧
Thank you for another thorough review!
My pleasure.
That's pretty slick Gerber is taking over the non plier multitool market.
I use my prybrid daily, but I might swap it out for this tool
Very good explanation. Thank you.
I have a love hate relationship with Gerber Gear products. I do like the Lockdown Pry. The tool sits well in the pocket and has a well constructed feel to it. I found the blade to sharp but did touch it a little on a wet stone. I will agree that the pry feature works pretty well. I recently used it to loosen a window molding . It made short work of an Andersen wood frame basement window. Gerber makes a few great products and on the other hand a few duds too...
When you were cutting the rope I was so disappointed by the time you got to the pry I was like HOLY SHIT when you just sliced that thang like butter
This looks like it could be a winner for me. I would get the driver version though. I would use the chisel as a light pry. Could replace my heavy Leatherman
Did u end up getting it?
Nice review. Appreciate
Scissors are a must
I really can't get over those thumb tabs on the blade and the file.
Man I use these tools to get me by in a pinch when I am out somewhere not expecting to be doing any work but something comes up . I dont see them for all day long "bigger" jobs but I guess they could be. I think if you do handyman work or carpentry in general its a handy tool to keep you from going out to the truck or to the toolbag downstairs . Maybe keep it in the console of your car where you dont have alot of tools. (thats where mine are) and If you are depending on this for "survival" I think you would be dang glad to have anything at all !! I think leatherman and gerber have made some pretty cool stuff . I own both. 👌🏻 Thanks for the review. Peace fellers.
Thanks for a useful review. Personally, this is superior for my uses. The pocket clip makes it a tool I can carry. I’ve always used pocket knife screwdrivers for prying and opening things more than inserting or extracting fasters. Agree about the thumb studs being in the way, but not a show stopper. As for one hand opening, it isn’t a tactical folder, but more of a SAK type tool, so who really needs it? Appreciate your analysis. I’ve been underwhelmed by many newer pocket tools and appreciate your bringing this one to my attention with a useful review.
Thank you for taking the time to watch.
I don’t think it’s designed to have the BEST tools in a lot of situations, but it’s great to have in a pinch, in an everyday carry pinch.
The voice and spirit of ETA Prime in a tool review channel!
I've been looking at the slim pry.
I'm a salesman in a tool store and we often end up abusing a screwdriver as a pry tool when customers bring in their broken tools etc.
I have most other things covered with my Milwauke 6in1 utility knife incl a driver. So the slim pry sounds like a great addition for prying and having some scissors on hand.
At the front desk we don't actually need to work on the tools so I wouldn't need more.
Now knowing about the chisel/scraper on the full version I am thinking to maybe go with the full option... 🤔
ive got a now discontinued c r laurence ultra thin 3n1 knofe n screwdriver.. razor util blade thst can be released for scraping.. a regular liner locked blade with serrations for rough cutting .... phillips and flat screwdriver bits that socket into the end in a reasonably convenient config... for scissors i have folding thumb hole and foyrefinger hole... hooked onto my k3uchain
Even though I own several pry-bars, I always find myself using a long large flat head screwdriver!
This vid is great for falling asleep. Great job at stretching a 3 min vid to over 20 min!
You know they have medication for ADD now.
I know, you should take some. Show them scissors off with one cut. I'm giving you shit but I actually want to buy one now so it worked.
That’s the best comeback you can muster? Lol
It may have gone over your head. If you don't have add but take add meds it's like doing coke. Which would make your vid better.
Great video, thanks.
Like the chisel, X-Acto blade and pry bar. The rest is just extra back up.
I was able to buy from BladeHQ for $25.00 and it helped me quality for free shipping on entire order.
At this price I am not complaining. I will see if I can come up with alternatives for the thumb tabs.
Hard to find folding pocket knives with a chisel or pointy sharp replaceable knife blades on a pocket knife.
If I do not want to mess up my good scissors on my EDC SAK I will use these scissors.
If cutting something that could have a hidden staple I can use the disposable blade so I can just replace if damaged.
Nice to have a very sharp and pin pointed sharp blade like the X-Acto knife. Bought 100 blades for $25.00 with USA #11 stamped on the blade.
The best pocket / belt lower carry clip is on the Klein electricians knife Model 44228 .
It will clip on a thin belt or a thick top hem of pants pocket . 5/9/23
had scissors just like those on my Gerber flik the spring broke for no reason just snapped wasn't under pressure or anything
do the scissors make good philips screwdrivers as well
As said by others before, Gerber (sadly) makes tools that look good at first sight... until you really use them. And since I'm 100% with you that anything to pry with should be tougher, I keep on using my SAKs and my Spirit S and complement those with a simple, real steel pry bar, in urban environment 160 mm long and outdoors 250 mm. For just opening a can of paint your SAK screwdriver/bottle opener works just fine.
I’ve got an Gerber multi tool that I’ve had for almost 20 years , I use it every day and it’s never failed in any way
@@philipalbon3192 20 years ago Gerber made better products
imo gerber has the best tactical/outdoor knives for a budget they arent crazy expensive but ive had my remix tanto, center drive for years and its perfect

What's is MM used for ? I Don't have my mm translator here ..
In the Netherlands, whe pay $68 for this. And I'm totally okay with it. I got mine now 3 days. And really like it. For what I use it for, this is more then enough. I don't need a big file, I don't need a blade that slices up to the end. I don't need big siccors. I use multitools a lot for my hobby's. And they are very sufficient for that. It's not all about man and big hands and heavy jobs.
That is steep. I can buy 70 percent a new Wave for that.
@@dmam412 In the Netherlands a leatherman wave costs $170
@@jarrod.0457 that is rough man. it looks like MTs in europe ingeneral are expensive. tack on the fact you all are paying 50 percent of your income in taxation and it looks more akin to a mortgage payment.
i can buy a surge for 130m wave for 100, swiss champ for 6 and swisstool spirit x for 105.
They have a model called the Lockdown Drive that includes a 1/4” driver and a diamond file. Also adds an awl. You lose the scissors and pry bar.
I have a video on that one as well.
@@txtoolcrib oh sweet! Would have been a good opportunity to mention that in this video when you were talking about this tool lacking those features. I’ll be sure to go check out that video.
I like that it has a file but sounds like it's next to useless and like you said usually a pry tool needs to have some heft to it to be useful.May be ok for opening a paint can. I would probably rather go with the K4 even at the price difference. Great review though Ben ..thanks!
I see it as something to be left on the store shelf
I dunno, ben, I've had a multi-tool w me since I was a kid working in a warehouse n have had a handful of voctorinox n wenger now on my 3rd leatherman, always looking for the perfect accessory. I lost the last favorite in a fire, a vic that had the only decent scissors on a utility and even had a Phillips head I would actually prefer over some purpose hand drivers and a magnifying glass that I'd have more use for now that I'm older. I must have a different philosophy of usefulness than Gerber [never used one], but this has five cutting edges for some reason, when all I really need is a blade that I can access easily. after that, I want versatility, not just more ways to cut. if I'm anywhere that even suspect I'll need to perform a task, I have a small tool bag w a small pry bar, 6in1 driver, mini hammer n a few others, but I've used the corkscrew more than the file. I want a tool that is useful for when I don't have my tools, but need to deal with something. not a replacement for tools that I have. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I was in the middle of the lockdown drive video and had to jump over here to compare now
I think I like this one a little more. I feel like it might make a better complimentary tool, though the weight might be limiting for that role.
We’re did u get the tx flag layout
Yea, I really liked the scissors. The rest...not as much
Big jump in quality from some of their other models.
@@txtoolcrib the scissors? Definitely agree
Yeah that’s what I was referring to. Sorry for the confusion.
What do you think of the Lynch NorthWest pry bars?
I haven’t seen those yet, but I will look into them.
Edit: They look pretty nice, they have some other stuff that looks interesting as well.
@@txtoolcrib they are a staple EDC item for many folks. they are very hard to find right now though (website completely sold out) and can only get one for doubel the price on ebay
Leatherman is no comparison to Gerber. So far I haven't found anything better than Gerber and the Gerber slide out pliers are by far much better because in case of a fold over you can pull the jaws apart. Try this with a Leatherman and they just close up. I might get a pry tool. Thanks for the video. That cut you made just may be a selling point.
The exacto knife is definitely a good touch, that file is just horrid though.
Nice review as always Ben. I hope for your sake gerbers next tools not called the lockbar 😊
I hear ya, lol.
You can call the Lockdown an Armbar if you want. You do not want to know what I would call it but you can probably guess. Someone at Gerber is not doing their job or they think consumers are idiots.
That chisel tip is a dog ball scraper for welders
That would be a good ever day carry
What’s up with all of these key chain/EDC and pocket multi pry tools?… who’s prying up miniature fasteners on a regular basis
Why knife and scroll blade don't need both
So... maybe wait to buy one? Im really interested to have this model.
Used market someday will probably be a great value
Good review i belive the best use for this tool will be the prybar im in the procces in buiding a small pouch that i can carry anywere and this will be a good add on.
Thanks great video
I want one
Do you feel the gerber center drive deserves to be called a plus with still the horrible wire cutters
It is one of my biggest detractors with that model. I would actually prefer Gerber made a butterfly style pliers utilizing the same driver. I think they could make a much better model by getting away from the OTF pliers.
I like this, i dont understand all the hate towards this.
I like mine much more after tweaking it a bit.
It’s definitely better than the drive, imo
What all do did you do for modifications?
@@txtoolcrib just Dremeled some reliefs in the scales to make accessing the blades easier, and then I made a hole in the base of the tool and reshaped the pry tool so a ratchet driver could fit in it. That’s made it a very useful tool
I actually liked the first 2 prybar tools but I have no use for these next gen versions.
Im looking at this and/or the Prybrid for an edc tool pouch to go in my truck center console. I think Gerber has some cool stuff out right now.
MP400 is my favorite
Swap that blade with the awl from the drive version and this would make more sense. Knife blades on multi tools hurt my brain. Most people carry a proper blade.
Compared to the Vic pioneer X this is kind of a joke. Gerber will always be tools for people who did not discover Victorinox or Leatherman yet.
i really dislike gerber
it always feels like they make 1 try and throw it on the market instead of using it daily for a week and then think "what could be better" and improoving it and launching it after testing , like leatherman etc
Leatherman is going the way of Gerber. Tools that look good on CAD software. Magnets in multi tools don't work in actual Trades.
I hate pocket clips like that, where they make a u-turn like that. It always makes the metal weak there and I always end up breaking those. I only get knives that have an angled clip, not that u turn crap. But I prefer a belt pouch over anything else.
If the pri bar is from still then is good
The flat pry side looks perfect for paint can lids.
Multi-tools are always a sucky compromise. It's really a question of how little it sucks in comparison to a real pair of pliers or a real screwdriver. Gerber tries hard but their stuff is clunky.
It is a two ton brick.
Something that might be a nice addition to your review scheme is a comparison to something like a pencil. Thinking about the thickness with that specifically.
I'm not around a tape or anything to see those measurements but a standard pencil everyone can easily compare mentally.
Not saying measurements aren't valuable btw.
And it wouldn't have to be a pencil, quarter's or anything everyone knows and is always the same.
Regardless thanks 👍.
(if you end up doing this and I've not gotten to that point of the video yet I'm going to leave the comment to help the algorithm)
Those thumb tabs are a major design flaw.
This just really doesn’t make sense. I got the Prybid and that’s awesome.
You can take the thumb tabs out and the holes might fit some aftermarket thumb studs or use a hard wire
Also with a dremel tool you can make a nail nick
It's as if Gerber doesnt believe in the concept of multitools to be actual tools to work with. They produce items that look quite interesting but they do only at first blink. You spend a second looking at it and you realise that it is just shiny garbage that is not a tool at all because they do not perform acceptably. This is a joke not a tool.
Lol, you’re way nicer to them then Dominic was.
I try to be fair. But they could have made this tool a lot better with some foresight.
I prefer a driver to scissors,I carry the Leatherman Raptor so I have that part covered. I carry the centerdrive and i love it,but I’d much rather have a saw blade than those useless scissors.
Next time take longer to open it!
There is always one in every group. Guess what, you’re the one.
@@txtoolcrib thank you :)
Looks lie a cutting torch tip file
What is with these “ millimeter “ measurements , nowadays ?!? I don’t get it !?! We have always measured everything in the past , using only the “ Inches and Foot “ , measurements ??? 🤔🇺🇸… It used to be that , the rest of the world only used the “ millimeter “ method of measuring objects ! We never used to use that ! 🤨…. You’ve lost me ?!? What’s going on ?!? 🤨
My audience isn’t just the US, it’s international.
No , TX . You don’t understand what I mean … 😐… What I’m saying is , it’s not just You ! I mean , it’s everywhere I turn , tv channels , radio channels , no one in this country speaks in Inches or Feet measurements , anymore . I can’t pick up Anything at a hardware store or anywhere else, for that matter , with its measurements being listed in “ inches or feet “ ONLY !!! 😐 Tools , wrenches now , are listed in that dang “ millimeter “ crap ONLY !!! … 😐….. I will never get used to it … ☹️
I think it’s more of a mix. You can find SAE wrenches, sockets, etc… all day long. TV’s are measured in inches. In construction we exclusively use SAE. Metric is getting more prevalent today though. And though we are accustomed to SAE, metric is actually a more simplified system. Mostly, products that are sold exclusively in the US will use SAE measurements, and anything sold internationally will generally be in metric.
I prefer my Swiss Army Knife’s scissors.
Spend the extra money and get a Benchmade
These videos should be 5 minutes long
Because you say so?
Just get a leatherman lols
Gerber is what happens when you have great concepts but outsource production to China
Not sure why you keep calling Gerber's factory edges "sharp" lol. Plus, that edge bevel looks absolutely horrendous
It came out of the box damn sharp, both of them did actually.
@@txtoolcrib I'm definitely nitpicking regarding how the bevels look (probably influenced by knife reviewers and my obsession with sharpening), but it's those small details and corners cut that add up to most Gerber products being trash. Really wish Gerber could get some designers that listen to the consumers like with their in-house products
wow that was boring
this tool makes no sense.
Too boring!
