About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.
I love how Toby threatens the geese so they don't eat his food and meanwhile lets Pablo eat half of it if he wants LOL
I'm thinking Toby and Pablo get extra food as well, maybe some canned food, and extra fatty food as winter comes. They are by nature carnivores and enjoy their protein. Pablo probably eats mice he catches, so Toby would need some supplementation. They both look healthy.
Ikr so cute!
I think Toby is stopping the fowl from messing with Pablo, while Pablo is eating. There are other vids on this channel showing the birds get close to Toby while he is eating, but he just looks at them and they run away. The only time he seems to get up and make an aggressive motion towards them is when Pablo is also eating.
see pecking order. lol
Geese are of the devil
Geese: Trying to threaten Pablo.
Toby: Turns his head to look at them.
Geese: "Oh hell no."
The way Toby acted I think he was guarding the food bowl. The geese may have stolen his food in the past when he was smaller.
I loved that part and how pablo looked at toby while he shooed away the geese
Ur such a good storyteller and the music is always on point ,,, do U do all ur own editing !? Super impressed
He does, if you look back on some videos of his routines, video editing is one
He's also mentioned in a previous video that he has long had an interest in filmmaking, and that shows in the quality of his videos.
Many of his videos also have wonderful drone shots of the farm from above. He even has used the drone to help his neighbors search for missing farm animals.
Farming isnt super interesting to me, I like animals, but I love the storytelling and I find it super engaging
It's JT!
"I'm getting a second dog to train up and a few more barn cats, but I hope Toby and Pablo will stay friends..."
*distant look into the future*
A mild sommer evening, Pablo is sitting on the Chicken coop, taking in the last sunbeams.
Toby comes trutting around, plobs his behind on the ground. The old tomcat barely opens one of his eyes, but his whiskers twitch.
"You're late, Tobydog.", the old barncat grumbles.
"I know, I'm sorry Pal.", Toby yawns and stretches his front legs. As he lays in the grass he looks up: "Boss had me chasing theese damn ParksnWreck-Gang. Boss says they might get brooty."
The Tomcat stays still as always, just his ear twitches: "Same game, every year."
Toby nods: "I guess. But the pup makes it all so more difficult! Always jumping around, saw him chasing Alexander Hammilhen, today. This kid is a giant fluffball of energy."
A little smile traces onto Pablo's face: "Reminds me of someone."
Confused Toby looks up to him: "Yes? I don't know anyone who is that exhausting."
Knowingly the old cat looks down onto the big, white dog. With the warmed heart of a withered elder he purrs: "I'm sure you'll train that pup well up. You turned out allright."
A whitsle blows over the meadow and Toby rises his head in alert. "Boss is calling.", he jumps up and throws a big smile to his friend: "Tomorow again?"
Pablo raises his tail to jump off the coop. Sie looks up to the giant dog: "Same time, same place.", and jumps off into the garden.
That was amazing!
Omg you are an amazing writer! Thank you for sharing with us! Such a pleasure to read your little story! I wanted much more...you know? 👏👏💖💖
That beautiful little story brought tears to my eyes!
@@mgloriav Me too
@@GoldShawFarm awww, thank you! ^^
I know this may sound creepy but the way you built up your farm over the years is basically what my mom dreamed of when she lived in Oregon before her health deteriorated and had to move back to Taiwan. It was her American dream to own a small farm with animals, fruits and vegetables. I am glad and happy that there are hundreds if not thousands of farmers like you that are able to live out the dream that many of us dreamed of. I love watching your videos and it is really educational to me, I have a whole new perspective and respect for every farmers out there now.
doesn’t sound creepy at all. many people have that exact same dream.
Wasn't a lot of Michael Pollin's book about self sufficient farms, permaculture, etc? I think one of his books made Polyface farms in Virginia famous.
Why would it be creepy? 😕
Animal friendships are amazing, we had a cat who was best friends with our guineapig and when the guineapig passed our cat sadly went into a depression that she never got over not even after we added a second cat.
I've seen our pets grieve one another when they pass. They truly love and miss each other too. It's so heartbreaking but also I have seen that animals love greatly and are truly sweet spirits who love and want to be loved.
Absolutely. My Dads dog went into deep depression when my Mom died. And after Dad died he refused to move much. But he was a huskey cross and was over 10 years old. He had spent his entire life with them.
I can imagine when Toby hangs outs with the new barn dog, with Pablo hangs out with the new barn cat in a distance, their eyes met and they remember of their beautiful secret friendship.
The established, senior animals will train the newbies to respect their elders:
🐶"Puppy, listen to Uncle Pablo, he is wise!"
😺"Kitten, Uncle Toby is warm and soft and a good friend to have on a cold night".
cant wait to see the new additions to the farm and their interactions with each other
Since Lil was an outdoor cat, I’m sure she would really appreciate an outdoor area for the two cats to hang out every once in a while. Even a cat solarium would be greatly appreciated I’m sure.
A catio, if you will.
A greenhouse sorta deal yeah.
Toby is happily sharing his food with Pablo but definitely not with the geese, haha 😂
Nope but he's insuring that Pablo gets as much as he wants.
Toby: "I love EbERYbODY!"
Geese: "Me Too?"
Toby: "Piss Off".
Toby gets all the credit. He was patient and never gave up...only when Dog #2 shows up will Pablo truly appreciate him. ❤️❤️❤️
Strong words friend, I would like to counter that Pablo is not only being patient too, but he is showing great tolerance, as a great animal was once quoted "Dogs drool and cats rule!"
I think you are making a huge mistake not having children. Raising a family would give you a lifetime to experience and benefit from the farm. And would be terrific example to your many followers.
Things I drink up like water:
Interspecies friendships
Anything Toby related
Anything Pablo Barn Cat related
Alternative title: man talks about his dog and cat being best friends for 10 minutes
Yes please🥰
Why do you think I clicked the video???
Yeah that's pretty much what the title means already
And I loved all 10 mins of it!
I want a 20 minutes version
I loved when the geese were surrounding Toby and Pablo. Toby turned and looked at the Geese and it made them back off.
Our new farm puppy is trying SO HARD to be friends with the cats, but they are not having it! lol Nice to see Toby and Pablo's friendship.
maybe whenever the dog gets close to the cats, you give the cats a nice treat they don't normally get. Eventually they might come to associate the dog with something positive :)
Tip for burdock: Use chiildren's detangler spray. Spray it on, let it set a few minutes and it will comb out much easier.
I'd suggest make your own with a dog safe conditioner mixed with water in a spray bottle. It will be more water than conditioner and a lot cheaper than detangler spray.
stuff is just about diluted conditioner ain't it? sounds like a pretty easy mix to make(dog safe and fairly cheap)
Pretty much, and mane and tail conditioner is way cheaper than the tiny No More Tears bottles. My stylist uses conditioner in water in a sprayer when cutting my hair. A tiny dollop goes a long way.
@@deed5811 It is only cheaper if you use the whole bottle of Mane & Tail before you need to throw it out. It isn't like you need to use this every day, multiple times a day like a stylist does.
Pablo is like: The Little one is now one of them fancy house cats, so I gotta make do with the fluffy white monster, no?
Pablo is French/Spanish/Caribbean. Now we know. Pablo Creole is a different kind of meow.
@@Biomirth Mia~o
Just to let you know, Pablo is STILL the alpha animal on the farm.
;)
Pablo Escobarn
no toby dog is the alpha
Agreed
@@Kakuretaka you dropped this 👑
Toby is only "food aggressive" when comes to those marauding geese. Take care you guys.
I'd call Toby food defensive when it comes to the geese. One step towards them they scattered 😂
it's a bit of a dog pack logic thing, family and friends get a share (if not fighting, it happens)
geese aren't family, geese are noisy nippy chore that toby needs to make sure don't die
@@prcervi that is not what that is .... at all....... it has nothing to do with pack mentality.
@@bickle8931 Yes it does .... in a roundabout way. Toby's "pack" consists of those that he allows into his personal space. He even allows Barn Cat to eat with him out of the same dish. It's a unique "family" dynamic. In this case, the "pack" is made up of multiple species, each having their place in the bigger scheme of things.
It's funny because I am fascinated with the small interactions animals have too.
This farmer's obvious love for ALL animals is just a JOY to behold. He gives me faith in human nature, which I sorely needed in these times. Bless him, and all his beloved charges!
Toby is the cutest creature ever, my heart can't handle it 💘
Toby & Pablo will always stay friends. They may join another group but will never lose the close connection that they have created together.
6:05 love that scene, pablo who always scared of geese stopped eating seing they were right behind so toby scare them away ^^
Here in New Zealand we rescued a couple of wild orphaned ducklings. One of the ducklings formed a really cool friendship with a wild baby magpie that was born nearby. Eventually the ducks fledged and we didn't see them for months, but the following spring when Bruce the duck came back to visit, and their friendship just resumed where they left off. So cute!
I'm but a simple man. I see Toby dog I click and like.
Nothing simple there I think. Just look at him and you know you're behavior is absolutely normal! 😍
I was expecting the Ghostbusters clip: "Dogs and cats living together. Mass hysteria!"
It’d be awesome if you managed to get another barn cat before the new puppy. Pablo will likely not appreciate the bundle of rambunctious dog energy and stay away from both dogs, leaving him lonely again. Cats be fickle things! Great to see lil barn/house cat doing so well! She’s a testament to your love and care. ❤️
Don't toss those burdock seeds after taking them off Toby ! Put em in your pocket and burn em, lol
Spreading them is exactly what they want lol
Yes, I constantly pull them off my cat! And into the garbage!
There's a reason they remind us of velcro. The man who invented velcro got the idea from burdock seeds. See Wikipedia.
That relationship between them is so sweet.❤🐕🐈
Pablo watching chipmunk go by, Toby-puppy barks, chipmunk vanishes. Pablo giving Toby-puppy that 'look'. Seriously puppy!?
Having you both as human parents bring out the best characteristics any animal could have. Toby is an amazing dog 🌟 An old soul who's very grounded with the earth and nature. 🏞️🌲 This breed is amazing .
As the songline goes, “If you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you’re with”. Sweet video.
Toby has such therapeutic energy. He's calm and happy, but not lazy or hyperactive.
Pablo is that one quiet friend that severely introverted
And Toby is that extroverted friend taking Pablo everywhere but Toby always pays for the food so Pablo goes
I love how he adds "Dog" And "Barn cat" to the end of their names haha
Howdy from west Texas! I agree, it’s really precious to watch different species interact in a positive way. Excellent video!!!
I remember when you were scared that they would not like each other
First of all, cutest video so far. Second, I want to hug Linda's neck - that drawing is LIFE!! Love it.
I want a Gold Shaw Farm as a movie or a Children’s storybook 🥰
Toby is returning to his polarbear fuzzy size, love it
This should be a kids’ book. Just send this video to a publisher of Children’s books.
Seeing Toby and Pablo hanging out and playing together reminds me of my cat and dog. They do almost everything together.
My cat still tries to play with the dog but he’s a bit too fast for her. She’s a lab though, so she acts like a puppy even though she’s 11.
your level of happiness and enthusiasm is truly inspiring
Your place is absolutely beautiful, you have done a great job.
Toby:
*NOW I'M YOUR ONLY FRIEND, HEH HEH HEH HEH*
Pablo:
*sigh*
Toby Dog is such a blessing! One look from Toby and the Geese back away 😉
I saw that...he looked and lifted a paw on their direction, lol
Toby looks so happy-go-lucky in every video.
Like he's still doing his regular patrol thing and needs it in a way, but once he made sure everything's alright he makes sure to grab all the pats and scritches he can get.
Yep, A Toby does what a Toby does. Pablo, well, he's does whatever Pablo wants to do. The two watchmen just hanging out
I love that you have cats to manage the rodent population, instead of using poison, good for you! You give the cats a home, the dog a friend and you don't kill falcons, owls and other rodent predators, that also preserve possums, who are rabies resistant and one of their favorite foods are ticks!!
That dog looks really chill, like, the eyes looks chill
"Watchdog duty together." hahaha. Oh, yeah! Well, the development in the next few months are going to be interesting. Looking forward to seeing it all happen.
The fact that the two can eat together without freaking out is adorable to me. :) I love it.

My dear friend, I have the same dreams lake you. In the last 2 years, I am living my dreams. Best regards from Serbia
I recently got a German Shepherd puppy because I have been having issues with security at my house. I already have two cats and I have been finding it a struggle getting them to be friends. This video really gives me some hope that it will eventually happen. Each month they do seem to be improving with each other. The cats are less skittish and my puppy is learning to not be so crazy around them.
Dogs and cats are such a incredible blessing and crucial companion for humans survival. Absolutely love em
I can see why you had the idea of writing a story yourself about Toby. Storytelling is a strong suit of yours. Please keep it up, I really enjoy listening to you speak about your farm. You have a lot to give.
Toby as a puppy, my heart be still! Toby and Pablo eating and him telling geese (with his tail) ... No soup for you!
Ah, the continuing adventures of Toby Dog and Pablo Barn Cat. I've come to just relish seeing your life on the farm. Not sure if it's for me, but I can appreciate all the hard work you put into making your homestead a viable one.
Toby as a puppy and now all grown up. Beautiful. Cannot get enough off Pablo's expressions. Have you ever considered writing a book?
You should make a children’s book about their friendship!! 🥺
Love the vid. Great seeing all of the farm animals find a place on the farm
You're a really good storyteller. Ever thought about writing a children's book?
I believe he mentioned in an earlier video he is, indeed, working on a book.
I think it’s aimed at the 12 and younger group.
Toby Dog, of course, will be the lead character.
I’m sure it will be amazing.
I wish these good people all the best.
I remember when Toby was just a puppy! He is so big.
Thank you for this beautiful video. I wonder if introducing the puppy and a kitten at the same time might be a good idea. The hostility mostly comes from the cats. But if they are young, they can learn. But I'm not so sure......
Pyrs such good dogs. Very patient, serious and watchful, yet gentle and affectionate with their flock. A little kitten was introduced a few months ago to our home. Kitten terrified of our Pyr at first because he is so big. A couple months later she playfully attacks him and he just shakes his big head at her. Sometimes he plays back and bunny hops around her. Very funny.
OMG the geese pretending they didn't want the food every time Toby turns around is so funny.
You know I’ve noticed over the years that my babies (cats & dogs) will love whom ever I love, might take a couple days but they always end up buddies, thank goodness. You & your wife are blessed & I know it takes hard work but I think you’ve got this. Amazing what love & a little common sense can accomplish. Looking forward to your next video😊❤️
Your videos go way beyond farming. They are about life. Farming just happens to be the medium through which you share your insight on life itself. I appreciate your conclusions because they are spot on and personally humbling: for example, this video, showing how the most unlikely friends - through compromise and understanding, while being true to self - build each other up (the forever bond). Thank you for what you do; thank you for your joy and love for both your wife and your animals. God gave you a gift that few possess - love in your heart. Cherish it.
How blessed are you to be living the dream so many of us would love. One planter, one season at a time. You really have amazing perseverance to farm in the extreme cold. You love your animals and it shows.
Heheheh, the geese circling closer to his food 😆 and the rat walking around when he introduced Toby to Pablo 🤪
The music you use enhances the stories you tell so much
Toby's journal - Every minute is the best minute ever!
Seeing Pablo hooking up with a new goofy fluffball friend is almost to wholesome. Cheers!
That’s great. My Great Pyrernes was always going after my cats. Had to watch them
I've been a CNA for over forty years and the one thing I've learned that makes things work well together, the team approach is the best thing to get work done quickly and well!
I enjoy your channel so very much! We have a mixed flock of chickens, guineas, ducks and a turkey. We have a total count of 52 ranging in age from 2.5 yrs to weeks old. We also have a barn cat, Sully, who chooses to sleep, eat and live amongst the birds. My greatest joys are watching the relationships and tolerance of my flock develop.
I knew they would be freinds! One take care of small threads and the other bigger ones. Both are Boss of their own remains! But it was a heart warming story and I glad you shared it with us.
Got to love this channel!!!!!
This whole video is totally a reminder that we! US! America, the world! We have to LOVE eachother. Especially those of US that are different.
Thank you for being so kind and respectful to other creatures.
You got a great group on your farm
Dynamic of these two is wonderful, clearly they love each other a lot.
6:02 the way he steps towards them because they are getting to close is so funny
The dog does all the work; the cat just chills.
Your videos mean so much to me. It's been a shit year but you were there every week improving your farm and it felt comforting to see it and you grow and get better with every passing week.
Goes to show even if the world isn't the nicest place right now, it's still up to us to build nice things.
Thank you so much.
If you could do one thing for me and have an amazing day, it'd make mine.
Cats and dogs can absolutely be friends, I've seen many. It's fun to see them try to establish hierarchy, and often the dog's energy will disturb the cat, super funny.
This is one of your very BEST videos. I also LOVE Toby ...and Pablo barn cat and Lil house cat. 💖 🐕 ❤️🐈⬛❤️🐈⬛💖
Toby sharing his food with Pablo is so sweet!
It's cool how you understand the land and respect the nature of things. Few people do.
Matt, I love all your animals, especially Toby and Pablo, believe it or not watching your videos give me peace in these troubled times, thanks my friend!
Yes ! ☝🏼☝🏼. This ❤️
Your pure enjoyment from witnessing your pets bonding is beautiful...you explain it so perfectly.
Goldshaws, you’re such a wonderful and heartwarming part of my Internet time. And I have learned SO MUCH about cold weather bird care, and shelter architecture. Thank y’all so very much. Please keep up the fantastic videos. Gratitude. 😁👍👍👍
Love your narrative of how you point out these little aspects of relationship you can only find by observing these animals lives and learn to appreciate it.
I think this is my favourite episode. Because of your reflections about the ecosystem and how we relate to each other, stemming from this cute relationship between your lovely dog and adorable cat.
The end of the video finally answered one of my long time questions, "Will you be getting another barn cat?" I am happy to have that answer be a YES!!!
The early Christmas present I was wishing for, thank you!!
That squirrel on 0:56 is also accepted by the Barn cat. Love your farm!
Burt's Bees de-tangler and a wide tooth comb will help with Toby's coat when it gets burdock stuck in it!!! From my friend who has worked with pretty much any animal you can think of: "I like a wide tooth metal detangler comb to work these things out. Then if you give him a good spray all over it will help keep them from getting so imbedded. You will need to spray him a couple of times a week. Be generous with your spraying. Then if you give him a light brush every day or so you should be fine."
Pablo, as a cat, was simply born to supervise, so he had to figure out ways to inform Toby who was boss. Toby had to stop bouncing around so much and start listening (which he has done, mostly). I suspect Toby is just fine with the arrangement (Pablo as boss) as long as he (Toby) can do the job he was born to do, protect (his humans, the farm and the animals, and even protect Pablo if necessary). I think that as new dog(s) and cat(s) are introduced, as long as Pablo is in charge, things will work out fine. See the cat "Orange" in the YT channel (out of Morocco) called "Kitten is a Life", wherein the human rescues and feeds kittens and puppies and viewers know just who will comfort all newcomers.
Good analysis
I love this story. Thanks so much for telling us about your Pets like that. It was so sweet. I love all your videos. It's always so much fun.
What a beautiful place.
