I think with Bean it’s a quality over quantity life question. While she might be at more risk of predators she is happy with her flock. It’s the one bad day equation. Maybe physically safer in pen with weird chickens but bullied and or missing her chosen flock isn’t a better life even if longer. In fact she might stop fighting and fade in that situation. You might want to try muscovy ducks. They are tremendous brooders. I had great luck with one mom last year and this year I have 5 dedicated moms stubbornly sitting on nests out of my 12 female ducks...

Great job! As for your duck make sure there is nothing she can get stuck in, like it should be easy for her going in water and stand in it as opposed to swimming as she may not get out and drown. I wonder if one of those sand battery incubators would work. I saw someone doing this in a warmer climate, but maybe your greenhouse would make up the difference. Moist sand in a large terra cotta pot with saran wrap over the top. Keep moist and let the sun charge it with heat. Maybe you could modify yours with a reptile warming rock somehow, but that still involves electricity. I really want to try this method myself, but I haven't hatched anything ever so this is very intimidating... I just wanted to pass the thought on jic it helps someone.

Not sure how practical it would be but maybe getting some other ducks like peking ducks giving them a secure enclosure and having bean live with them that way bean is safe and also with ducks

That being said I watch your videos for pure entertainment. I love the animals and your stories. Until I saw your videos I never knew about MAREMMA dogs. Toby and Abby are a blessing to you..Toby born to be a livestock guardian and Abby born to be your pal. Pablo and Ginny great barn cats and little barn cat adapted to retirement very well. So thanks for bringing a smile to this old lady’s face. As a side thought I am a retired nurse practitioner.

That's gut wrenching when that happens, especially as your business revolves around the birds. I'm the opposite - too many ducks that need to go to freezer camp, so no hatchings this year, a rethink and remanage the whole system differently.
