As someone who worked in a pizza place, we had a gluten-free crust available to anyone who asked for it. One day a woman calls for a gluten-free pizza and we made it for her, but barely five minutes after it was delivered she called demanding her money back because the pizza crust was thin and basically like a cracker. We told her that's how gluten-free crust is, and she quickly backtracked with a replacement order. Guess she was part of that trendy crowd who didn't know what gluten-free meant.

That was my strategy whenever I had a management position. If I wanted to find out how to make things better, who else should I ask but the workers? Yeah of course that generated a lot if idiocy, but at the same time, a lot of damn good ideas were produced. Reward bonus to the people with the good ideas worked well for me. The 'Beat my chest and you into submission' thinking had always been a stupid idea to me throughout my working life. The biggest problem always seemed to be crowbaring the bonus for the idea generator from upper management.

Laying off/firing people to save a dime is ridiculous. Stuff still needs to get done, so they end up paying someone higher up to do the tasks. So they are paying someone else more to do something a person who made less did trying to save a buck. It is so backwards. Makes more money sense to have someone who is paid less do something a little more to increase their value. Like, instead of having housekeeping clean the place, why not have the VP of the company do it. SMH.

That register kid's story hit hard. I was an overnight supervisor who had a rotating door of employees who barely lasted a month. Naturally, overnight responsibilities started to fall behind due to constant training and corrections. I ended up getting demoted and placed on the evening shift where I ended up training NEW supervisors and even stepping in to take over during incidents that my direct supervisors didn't know how to handle. I ended up training a new guy who ended up being my new supervisor after a month. When my Sunday/Monday off gets swapped for Tuesday/Wednesday at the start of the football season, I went online, applied for a new job in the same field, and got hired within a week.
When I put in my two weeks notice, management was in a panick because other than my supervisor I trained, no one else employed was trained nor wanted to learn the system I spent 8 years using. They offered me a new supervisor position, Weekends off, and an eventual recommendation for an assistant director position in the area starting at 50k a year.
I looked my director dead in the eye and asked him "where the fuck was all these opportunities before today?"
I worked my full two weeks and left without looking back.

I've done low-carb diet, and you more or less end up going gluten-free, since wheat contains gluten, and is what you end up avoiding.
I have noticed that you end up being less hungry. I think there's something in wheat specifically that makes you more hungry, so I can understand why gluten-free became a trend. Not because of gluten insensitivity, but rather through sheer coincidence.
I do agree with the first OP though. I knew exactly what I wanted, looked at the menu, and ordered what matched my requirements.
I don't think I asked even once "is there gluten in this?" or something similar. I think once I asked if they had something without wheat, but that was because they didn't have a menu.
EDIT: Although one upside is you don't have to avoid trace amounts of gluten, as it's about the general carb amount. So the deepfrier would be fine.

Amazon did the same thing as that second story, but to a far worse degree I'd say. New people were hired on making AT LEAST $3 more than current workers PLUS they had a $2k sign on bonus. None of the current workers were entitled to either of these things. During this time they kept losing new workers who didn't like the working environment or were straight up fired for bad working ethics, and old workers who were upset that new people coming in were making so much more than them but were doing less. Still the most baffling decision I'd ever heard of from a job company.

As annoying as the trendy gluten-free people are, they have actually been a god-send for me. I have Celiac and for most of my life, nobody knew what gluten was or what gluten-free meant. But when it became trendy, suddenly there is a whole section in the grocery store dedicated to GF, and restaurants actually know what it means and don't just look at me like I have 2 heads anymore. So yeah, the trendy people can be annoying, but by making GF popular, it's actually made my life (and anyone with Celiac) so much better.

I appreciate the vegan trend for a very similar reason. I developed a dairy allergy when I was 16 (both lactose and whey), and for years I dealt with it by just not eating any of my previous favourites, but so many things that have no reason to contain dairy do anyway so I have to be careful and read labels of everything before I buy it (like most flavours of chips and most painkillers and allergy medications have lactose in them). The sudden increase in people choosing to not eat dairy has caused grocery stores to stock vegan options and many restaurants to do the same, so I can actually go eat at restaurants again after years of cooking everything myself. It's still a bit tricky at restaurants because every time I say "dairy allergy" people hear "lactose intolerant" and try to offer me lactose free cheese or goat cheese instead, but those things still have whey and I'm still allergic to them. So anytime I'm at a restaurant I just order a vegan option and ask for meat to be added.

My sister has a serious gluten allergy, and before we go out to eat somewhere she'll always check if the restaurant has their menu online, and if they have allergy information(?) posted. She also knows generally what she can and can't order, with the exceptions of asking if french fries are coated in flour or if the gravy is made using flour, etc. I feel like people who constantly re-iterate they're gluten-free, or anything else for that matter, to the point they start sounding like a broken record, are usually doing it for attention... not all, but a lot. Especially considering the woman sounded like a regular; there wouldn't necessarily be a need to constantly remind them if they recognized her. That, and if she really was a regular with a legitimate gluten allergy she would know what she could and could not order. Which I think is OP's entire point but I digress. Story 1: My brother has celiac disease and the trend of non-allergic people claiming they can’t eat gluten makes it so much harder for him to be taken seriously and to be sure that food that is labeled „gluten-free“ in restaurants is actually safe and not cross-contaminated. Now he doesn’t eat in restaurants at all that also prepare food containing gluten, since even traces of it can be very harmful to him. @richardfabacher3705 I can't say why it is definitively worse. The main *difference* between the 2 is that sea salt is less refined and still has various minerals mixed in. So, my guess is just that sea salt is to be avoided due to the randomness it can throw into a structured diet. Although, the amounts would be below trace amounts, because it would be trace amounts of the already small amounts of sea salt you would consume. My dad’s story of Army related malicious compliance:
Some glitch caused my dad to get overpaid. After the problem was found and corrected, they took the additional money back. All at once. From a single paycheck. Needless to say, my parents were not pleased as that set things behind and they had a baby on the way (my oldest sister). Dad tried to fight it, to get the money taken from several checks instead of all at once, but no dice. He decided he wanted out, but he had just re-enlisted. So they wouldn’t let him out. He asked if he could get a psychiatrist to say he was mentally unfit, would they let him out? They scoffed and said sure. Well, my dad was always a thorough researcher. He found the one shrink with an ax to grind. One who hated the Army and was hungry for a way to stick it to them. Dad got his note, got an honorable discharge, and he went home to Michigan with my very pregnant mother!

    About the phishing emails:
I work in IT support, so naturally I have to have basic training in IT security.
It is one of the easiest things to fake an email sender, so saying "any email sent from X account is not fishing" is actually quite dangerous.
It's not unheard of for targeted attacks to use trusted emails from within the company in phishing attacks, and there's no real way to tell if an email has a real or fake sender, aside from comparing other parts of the meta data.
If I had been in that person's position, I'd just have laughed and said "well done" during the next meeting. Because it's important for everyone to know that no sender is "safe".

The story about the cashier reminds me of the time when I was managing restaurants for corporate Pizza Hut. I had a shift leader who was a certified "Dough Master" who had worked form me for 3 years and been in the store for 4. He was getting married and it was yearly review and raise time. Our limit for making raises on our own authority was $0.25/hour. We couldn't have overtime, and he worked about 35 hours (max we could schedule anyone.) I wanted to make sure I kept him and I told my boss (Area Supervisor, my 7th in 3 years) that I was going to give him a raise of $0.75/hour. That was a pretty big raise back then, and more than enough to keep him working happily. My boss tried to object. I asked him to do some simple math... $0.50/hour X 35 hours per week.... That's just $17.50/ week. That means if a 'replacement' employee were to just mess up 2 pizza orders a week, it would more than wipe out any 'savings' from not giving Thomas the raise. He got the raise 😁 And he hired me and my buddy to be videographers at his wedding (story for another time.) I didn't last much longer as a manager with Pizza Hut. They had really stupid upper management.

Coeliac disease isn't an allergy, it's an autoimmune condition.
I'm an actual coeliac, diagnosed 24 years ago now. The gluten-free fad was brilliant for increasing the range of gluten-free food available, as well as improving the quality and generally reducing the price.
You get used to eating at restaurants and pubs. Some have a section on the menu with exclusively gluten-free meals, whilst others have a crossed-grain symbol next to the foods on the menu.
If you know what you're doing, which long-time coeliacs do, you can order something without a crossed-grain and change the sides. For example, in most places it's a good idea to avoid chips (fries) because they're prime for cross-contamination, so ask for new potatoes which are boiled by thisen.
But, my word, fadders used to talk and talk. I'd mention I'm a coeliac and their monologue would usually either abruptly end or they'd ask what coeliac's is. The one's who continued I just explained what would happen if I ate gluten and a common response was "why would you even tell me that?". I'm sorry but if you're going to keep talking, I'll tell you what would happen if I ate half a crouton.

I've seen the first story before and I would just like to give a PSA that gluten allergies are all different. There are people who can have food that has cross contamination. I have no idea if that lady was lying or not but it is not ops place to determine that. I understand that it's annoying but that is no reason to assume that they are lying. The comment about how people who are actually allergic to gluten have a general idea of what they can have is not true as it can be different from restaurant to restaurant is they put flower or something similar in their sauces. Sorry for the rant I just don't like how op handled the situation.

Story 1 - This is my favorite trick to stop gluten 'trendy' eaters. Can't let people eat their allergen, or you know, you get legal issues. I get the GF crowd a lot and it's annoying. People who have the allergy, or in my experience, act decent and know what to expect. They also know they can't eat off cross-contaminated surfaces or food fried in oils. I'm more than happy to serve a customer food for them to eat. I'm happy to make changes for allergies, as I have horrid ones myself. As in out both ends, struggling to breathe bad.
However, It pisses me off when people come up with a bogus lie to get something more or change an order last second because 'we're Gluten Free'. If you have a food allergen, be up front about it. Especially if you're ordering catering. It's super easy and makes everyone's life a lot easier. I always tell restaurants my allergen, just to be safe (It's a spice). I want to be safe and I don't want to make a fellow kitchen worker's life hard. If my allergen's in the meal, I order something else I can eat. Easy peasy, no Karen evolution.

I work in a grocery store deli where we slice lunch meats for customers. If they ask for one of our gluten free meats, I ask if it's for allergy/celiac reasons, so I can clean one of our slicers, since we don't have one dedicated specifically to gf. One lady got so angry when I asked; I guess she thought I was judging her? I had to reassure her that it was so I knew if I had to clean a slicer specifically for her. Other times, people ask for gf, I tell them I don't have a gf slicer, so it would take a moment to clean one for use, and they just wave it off and say it doesn't matter. I have no problem taking the extra time to make sure people get what they want, but I usually encourage them to get the pre-packaged stuff, since everything you get cut at the counter has been cross-contaminated with gluten in some way. It's wild.

@@wmdkitty That is just it. In alot of cases being "difficult" is daring to inconvenience kitchen staff. And if not wanting to be in excruciating pain is "making a scene" to you I suggest staying away from the service industry entirely. I have seen how my sister has been treated and worked in kitchens and in alot of cases unless the person is going to drop dead in front of them they are the ones making a huge issue of it.
Some folks need to learn what service industry means. If allergies and immune disorders are too much of an inconvenience for someone they should find a different career. It is not up to people with allergies and immune disorders to make sure the restaurant staff has an easy day at work.

The gluten free trend/boom has in part been a blessing due to better grocery products. I was diagnosed with wheat allergy specifically, not gluten, but the new gluten free products have given me so many more options. When I was first diagnosed, there were very, very few items at the grocery store. I still remember the GF cookies back then that looked like Oreos but tasted like a pile of baking soda and salt. 🤣 Those have no longer been on store shelves since the newer, tastier products took over. I really appreciate the restaurant staff who take food allergies seriously. I'm lucky that mine isn't as dangerous as some others have.

It's always a weird conversation because it's not an allergy, it has to do with inflammatory responses based on certain catalysts and it's super confusing to manage lol. I haven't had a server ever be a dick about it though, just that not all of us that seem weird about the "gluten" thing are on a trend. It's not even gluten that is my problem, it's the way processed wheat flour immediately metabolizes into glucose and spikes your levels faster than even candy.
