  • r/Maliciouscompliance In today's episode, OP is working at a company where he helps many different teams. Things start just fine, but he quickly becomes overwhelmed as departments request more and more of his time. He eventually becomes unhappy and starts looking for a way out. Meanwhile, OP's boss order OP to just shut up and do his job, so that's exactly what he does! He does ONLY the things required in his job description and stops spending hours helping out all the departments that depend on his help. Before long, the entire department crumbles and OP's boss has to take all the blame!

    I like the last one. Usually it’s the boss that made things worse and got screwed. A nice change of pace for a boss that was doing a good job with his team.

    The last story is the flip side - if your boss is a good person, you owe goodness back. That’s just how humans work best together. If he scratches your back by trying to get you home early every day or getting you the shifts you want and need, scratch their back and go the extra mile every once in a while. Sounds like a great workplace to me!

      Amen to that. My Chief (fire station) is this kind of boss. Almost all our people (there's always "that guy") will go the extra mile for him, because he routinely does the same for us.

      sounds like Jersey was freeloading, being given an inch and trying to take a mile, got called out on it and learned his lesson the hard way and ended up dragging his colleagues down with him. When you have a boss that is flexible with you providing you reciprocate and are flexible with them, you're more likely to want to go the extra mile (speaking from experience)

      Sometimes, the best way to punish an individual is to punish the group. I can guarantee that if Jersey was the only one forced to stay late, the behaviour wouldn’t change. But, having a bunch of angry colleagues pissed at you is usually enough to change attitudes like that. Plus, OP had a point. They’re still on the clock.
      If Jersey had simply said yes, it wouldn’t have been an issue.

    Makes perfect sense, alienate the on guy making things work, then expect things to go swimmingly. Definitely a manager that has no clue and will destroy a business. All to often it's found out to late.

      Yes, it's amazing how often some version of this happens. Years ago my company hired a new exec and put her in charge of evaluating the customer service team and related teams. She proposed getting rid of everybody because it would 'save money'. And leadership stupidly went along with it! Our customer service team was an very specialized, highly trained team that provided support to high dollar/high expectation clients. Outsourcing that work to a run-of-the-mill customer service operation that typically worked from scripts and handled fairly simplistic customers questions was a nightmare. Actually cost the company hundreds of thousands to get out of the contract, reconstitute customer service, etc. Can I just say, many of us knew this was gonna be a shitshow? Whole debacle took less than 6 months start to finish.

      to be fair the change in ownership often (not always) means there was already a problem in the machine, also why a lot of ownership changes carry a lot of lay offs and downsizing.

    The age of resignation is being DRIVEN SOLELY by bosses like this. In the last two years, people at every level have gotten better at spending less and needing less. It gives us room to say a big FU to bosses and circumstances like this, where our labor is not valued. It’s also why the quality of your food and services aregoing down.

      then those same overlaps of people wonder why no one wants to take lovely jobs that pay $2 an hour.

    Story 1 happens everywhere. The harder and more conscience you work, the more they pile on. There is nothing to show for it. Before I retired, I offered to train people on the things I did. I have been a team lead and acting supervisor quite a bit. I was given specialized liaison tasks in addition to everything else. So, before I retired, I offered to train a replacement. It was declined. Malicious compliance. From the grape vine, things went to hell after I left and I couldn’t care at all.

    The first story is mindblowing... like, how entitled does your boss have to be to say "I don't care that you're doing unpaid work in half the departments at the company, you better have documentation for _all_ of it and never complain about anything ever again"?
    If your employee is experienced in multiple departments and those departments want help from them, you either make their workload lighter and pay them accordingly for the extra work, or fuck right off.

    I love the last story, reminds me of one. I overlooked a guy who smoked weed. He was a great employee, although sometimes entitled. One holiday weekend when the holiday actually fell on the weekend when we were closed. If you work the day before and after the holiday you get paid for it. He ran up to me mid day and told me he was leaving to go start partying early. I feel bad but said nothing. I noted he did not finish his shift. He did not get the holiday pay. He was PISSED. When he confronted me I simply explained if I had paid him I would never have a team to work the day before a holiday again. He never made that mistake again.

      I'm glad RSlash did his research before getting one. Drones have a lot of rules and regulations behind them that not many people check. It's harsh in the UK but the US looks even worse!!😂😅

      @@joanneking170 Here in Russia you technically also have to get a permission from the local air travel regulatory body, but they are often lenient for recreational drone use. They just use jammers around strategically important places, for instance GPS-equipped drones will rather humorously bugger off north-east from the Kremlin.

    Sorta like the letting the boss know when OP left his desk. Another guy and I took the same diuretic. Our morning bathroom breaks ended up syncing. After seeing us leave for our second trip for the morning, the chief engineer said, “Must be nice to take so many breaks.” When I explained the situation, he got red in the face and apologized. It was a strange bonding moment. We got along really well after that.

    That airforce story sounds so wrong in so many ways.
    1) Airman is the lowest rank in the airforce, literally bathroom scrubbers. They are not treated like adults. (Although they might be babied cause airforce)
    2) they might have had a TS clearence....so does half the military. And all that talk about handling collateral secret equipment and sensitive encryption material could just mean a laptop with a CAC reader.
    3)airforce doesn't have sergeants, their lowest NCO rank is a Staff Sergeant
    4)you never call an enlisted soldier a Sir or Ma'am...you address them by their rank. Sir and Ma'am are reserved for officers only.
    5)again...Airman is literally the lowest rank....if you start playing games like that with your NCO your about to get counseled after about 80 push-ups.
    Idk either this guy is making up the whole story or he was a huge shitbag.

    The top secret story I connect completely. My job isn’t too severely I’m just an aircraft mech but I have had an issue with that. I literally told my fellow co worker that I was going to the restroom or grabbing water or something. Supervisor walked by multiple times during a few weeks and would ask “hey where’s your side kick at” the d bag had the nerve to say, “idk he walks off sometimes”. I got written up for this. Found out about this last Thursday, needless to say, I’m never ever helping this dude of covering for him ever again

    Sometimes just the treat of complying gets the desired results. Almost 40 years ago, I had to talk to the owner of our corporation, because our boss was on vacation. As soon as he returned, his office manager ran to him, "Mike talked to Mr. Flinn!" He stormed into my shop and screamed, "If you er talk to Mr Flinn again, I'll fire you!" I shrugged, "OK. I'll just tell him 'I can't talk to you or Mr. Bliss will fire me.'." His eyes went wide, he turned pale and I think he crapped his pants.
    The next time Mr. Flinn made his yearly visit, I showed him some modifications that I had made to our Cable TV headend, and my boss tried to take credit for it. You could see in the owner's eyes that he knew better.
    I had added a message that displayed 'This channel is off the air. Please check your program guide for air times' that came up when a station signed off. At that time very few stations were on 24/7. It also allowed us to monitor that our emergency aler system was functioning, without disrupting all channels to test it.

    Last story:
    I think the employee was genuinely trying to be helpful. Working while not on the clock can incur serious fines for the employer. He could've phrased it more politely, though.
    The boss should've responded by having him clock in sooner, but also having him clock out sooner, so the employee makes the same amount of money, and the employer is in compliance with the law.
    The way the boss responded means that employees probably won't remind him about the clocking-in thing, so the company might end up being fined for "wage theft".
    Of course, it's a stupid law, but that doesn't mean the boss should break it.

    In the last story they need what is sometimes referred to as an early out. It's a late shift employee who comes in an hour early, but also leaves an hour early. This way for situations like the one described here, the early out would be there to handle it without occurring overtime like an early shift employee. If it was a 24hr operation with three shifts, each shift would have its own early out.

    It's truly shocking how performance based raises result in better productivity, and the lazy people quitting. Unfortunately 90% of businesses don't offer raises period so they will never know true success.

    1st story: It obviously surprised the higher ups to realize 1 guy was the whole reason several departments functioned, but if they had not fired all his original coworkers they would've had a dozen of him and could have assigned like 2 to each department. Too bad they did not take stock of what everyone's job was before they fired them.

    So... that head of the department got a heavy-lifter-eployee for his department, by keeping vultures from other departments from him. If this story is true, this person is willing to put a lot of work into the job and does not really care how much the other people in the department actually do, as long as they keep it civil and limited and most importantly, keep the more arrogant people from the company away from him.
    I mean, I don't want to downplay that department or their efforts, people do work differently and depending on interests, they put a different level of effort into their job. It's fine and okay as long as they meet the criteria at some point. Some go over the top, some just do their job and be done with it. What matters is that they get along and respect each other for who they are.
    It's still funny how other departments lost a seemingly "over-the-top" employee over petty hostility and rudeness and another department won this employee by being respectful and by just wanting him to do the job.

    Last story reminds me of what happening at the moment with me at work, but in reverse ...
    So, I take the train to work, and with Covid, train times have changed a few times recently, a coworker of mine who takes the train after me taw me at the station last week and told me that I had a train at 15:47 (I get off work at 15:39, and it takes me about 8 minutes to get changed, leave work and get to the station, we're really close), so, I work in a small team of 5 people for a company of 1000 ish, we repair the moulds that are used to make luxury boats, we're highly specialised in our job, but are poorly paid ...
    My supervisor always said "we can always arrange stuff between us", and the only advantage we had was flexibility, as in taking 2-3 minutes here and there was overlooked, since if we needed to stay an extra hour to get shit done without prior notice, we'd do it ... because if we didn't, it would hurt the company and production (we're like tech support for boats, but as a manual labor job).
    So here I am, learning that if I can manage to just get closer to the locker room, 3 minutes before the bell rings "go home time", I'd be able to catch an earlier train that would have me get home at the time I'd be hopping on the train I used to take ...
    Here I thought that if I offered to get back to work 5 minutes earlier after lunch, technically giving 2 minutes of time every day to the company, I'd be allowed to just get closer to the locker room (our area is on the other side of the building from the locker room, and it takes me about 3 minutes to walk from one side to the other) ...
    But no ... apparently it's unfair to everyone else to let me APPROACH the locker room 3 fucking minutes before the bell rings, so that as it rings I can go upstairs and get changed, giving me just enough time to catch my train.
    So now, I give 0 flexibility, if the bell rings and I'm still doing stuff, I drop everything on spot and leave.
    When I'm needed, and it means I'll do overtime, it's NO ... the time is the time. We're in kindergarten. But hey, I'm complying to the fairness of not giving them 2 minutes of my time every day.
    Fucking pathetic.
    Not to mention, everyone is already just standing doing nothing 15 minutes before the bell even rings ...
    I'm just there to watch the world burn now (literally as in we use highly flammable products, that will cause a fire if after canalization and use we don't put the waste in a water bath, but hey, time is time ... if it rings, I'm gone).

      Absofcukinglutely. One place, we lived and died by the timeclock, even though we were salaried. Get bitched at and even threatened for "violations", fine, the timeclock it is. As soon as the 5pm bell(!!) rang, we all dropped everything and ran outta there like the place was on fire. Treat us like we're hourly, and we'll ACT like we're hourly.

    That last story is horrifying an hourly employee off the clock refuses to do work before clocking in, so the manager punishes eveone in the office

      What punichment? He enforced the proper worktime. Them getting to leave early was a nice gesture from the boss. To tell them they will work their full time is not a punishment.

    1st story: if even only 1/2 of those numbers are true, I wouldn’t be surprised if people where getting fired for gross misconduct and wage theft. It sounds like these assholes where made up of every one of those people who never participated in group projects!

      Totally agree with you, just wanted to add a possible reason. As a new manager (or whatever higher position), you feel the need to a) impress people in order to get even higher and/or b) show people that you were the right choice for the role; both options would often be misinterpreted as "I need to leave my mark" (i.e. make a change). It's a dumb reason and it often either ruins the business or just adds some complications that would be addressed by the next manager (which would "impress" people by changing things back lol). I am (and always had been so far) in a low rank role so this is just my perspective based on what I've seen/heard/been told regarding how business politics work.

    That first story sounds so much like previous job it's ridiculous. I got purchased and got treated like trash for a year. What sucks is I loved the previous job before the purchase that I was kinda depressed to leave but day I turned in my paperwork I felt like I could breathe for first time in over a year

    I don’t understand why bosses ask so much from employees but don’t reward them for doing good, if an employee is that vital, pay them for it, if he/she produce the workload of 2 or 3 people, pay for it, “hey mate, noticed the large workload in multiple departments, from now on your on 1.5x pay permanently” saves having to hire an extra person or 2 and the worker gets paid more🤷🏼‍♀️
    My boss chucks me $1000 every so often and says “love ya work mate, keep it up.” Keeps the worker happy and the business rolling
