- My Lotus Elise S1 had some significant chassis damage, normally this would mean crushing the car or buying a whole new chassis. But for the first time a Lotus Elise chassis has been fixed publicly. With the use of glue!!

Great job. Little does he realise, in years to come people will use this as a key reference video in how to repair an Elise chassis. :-)
Lovely to see the car back on the road, especially with a well thought out repair. What a lot of people don't realise is that the racing teams have been repairing Elises for years and they have been able to race them hard for several seasons after the repairs without ill effects. It may not be easy to repair the chassis and sometimes it may not look pretty but it is do able just as you have shown. Well done.

Another great job Jack. Proves yet again that there is no such thing as "Can't be done". Any project we want to tackle is only limited by our imagination and of course the depth of our back pocket, but when you see the Elise before and after it's so worth it!
Wonderful post Jack! It looks like the Gents did a top notch job on fitting in the "Donor" Frame and your body work fitting it back together is going to be perfect once it's painted. Just for reference. There is a procedure described in the Manual to check the chassis integrity. If your bonded repair passes that test, then fine; some lasers would help.
I’m so glad to see it repaired. The Elise is such a special car. I’m interested to know why glue was used rather than welding.
Would’ve been epoxy decision not to fix it, this resin-ates much better.

I used to work for the company which made the extruded parts for this chassis (and now the latest London taxi); the level of finish & cleanliness required on the individual parts is critical - Each batch has equivalent test pieces which are glued & then tested to destruction.

Great to see the car saved. The extruded aluminium sections were bent and cured at temperature from what I recall from the TV program on the design and build of the Elise. A really neat process how they started making everything out of extrusions, even the pedals I believe!

Super happy for you that you got the Elise back with its new chassis leg. I don't know how strong it is compared to an "intact" chassis, but considering it was driven with that scary damaged, strucural epoxy glue, rivets and everything. I mean premium / supercars and so on are built that way. The right adhesive can be super super strong, and the repair is beautiful. So happy to see that little Elise back too
Thanks Pete!! Obviously original is better but I’m happy this is now good enough to be safe! Def won’t fail under load. Not sure how it would behave in a crash though.. but I drive much older and less safe cars aniway so not worried!

i only happened across Number 27 by chance a few days ago. So many motoring series are a bit Jaclk-the-Lad. Jack-the-27 is refreshingly different and I find myself even watching videos about cars which don't particularly interest me because the presentation is so good. Keep it up Jack.

@@DaveGore I never bit the bullet to buy an S1. Test drove a Millennium Edition that was for sale but ended up with a VX220.
@@sparky4878 I test drove a VX before buying the Elise. Lovely car but I was upgrading from a Seven and it felt a bit too heavy. Mines a very early S1, only just over 700kg.
Looks like a solid job - as you say, better to have too much glue, rivets and welding, and it looking over bonded, rather than an unobtrusive job you can’t trust!

I’ve just been watching a bunch of fancy CZcamss about all sorts of immaculate exotica kept in incredible heated garages which are far more comfortable than my living room. What a load of shite! A bloke with a single garage and a heap of stubborn enthusiasm doing it himself is far more uplifting. This country was built by fellas like you - I take my hat off

Brave man, and assuming the repair process is safe, long-lasting and accepted by the Lotus tipo, well done for saving a true drivers car. Being open and honest with the work required, your now well known car can be enjoyed by other owners in the future, assuming the MOT police are happy.

@@Number27 It may be that when you come to sell the car, your YT channel could generate a lot of interest, as did Ratarossa's 360 when he sold it last year. Also, and you will know better than I, that many Elise are used as a track cars, which might appeal to someone - you may not get your money back but that is not your objective. Glad you got it back on the road, and who cares what people think!!!

Great news Jack, Really please you got it back now, Very similar to the way my Dad repaired them, instead of glue n rivets....they would plug weld through the holes to hold back plates, and Tig weld the seams. They would put an extra bar across inside to make up for lost strength...They were getting write-off all the time....beeing small and low n often in dark green, purple, or black....!!! People would pull out n side swipe them.!! He did a strong honist repair and good money could be made. But that repair was criminal..!!!

@@Number27 Yes back in the 90's, One he had was so new it even had the dealer paperwork flung under the seat, some poor bugger must have written it off on pick-up day..!! In those days a fax would come in once a week with latest stock at the salvaged dealers, My dad would drop everything and rush out to put deposit on special cars like Lotus. We had a nice Disney holiday of the back of one he did.
But yes it was done very similar way his partner Albert was very good Aluminium fabricator welder. He said the repairs done that way were incredibly strong and more than adequate for a car of that size n weight.. So your all good...(:

The way it was "fixed" was almost... no, WAS criminal !👹 Imagine the car, as bought, in a serious crash.

This is really interesting. I have an Elise S2 on my own, I always considered a damage to "the tub" to be unfixable (hence I was wondering what this crazy YT dude is doing here :-) but again... you did it! Congrats!). Really good to see the Frankenlise back on your channel (although I also like your 308). I am really unhappy I can only like this once... more of this please :-)

I don't care what others might think about your repair- I like that you saved the car! You enjoy it. It looks like quality workmanship to me. When it comes time to sell it you will be open and honest about the repair. Jack, if you have a hard time selling it, look me up 😉 I am not holding my breath- something tells me you won't be tempted to part with those keys anytime soon.

Very happy for you, those glues are basically like soldering and I am shure it will be just fine!. It seems its the successor for the 308! I hope you wont have as much as you had to do on the 308. Cheers!!! Very very cool car!
the epoxy resin/glue you used reminded me of a repair I did on My for Zodiac in the 60s them days Araldite was the accepted best You had to mix same amount from both tubes in a pot put the pot on the stove mixing it don't exactly remember for how long then use it it was the strongest adhesive I have ever used by far after I finished the repair I tried to clean the pot i couldn't get the spoon stuck to the pot for my life in the end the spoon bend n broke but would Not move at all hope your adhesive is as strong mate cheers n thanks for all your videos mate we love them all
This one should be stronger!! Proper structural adhesive!
