spot of copper slip on those new bolts Jack....save a lot of future heartache
nickel based anti-seize tends to less reactive but more pricey, copper slip can fuse on certain metals.
I would use ceramic grease on bolts.
Any bush that is clamped perpendicular to its movement in use needs to be bolted tightly ONLY once the correct ride height is achieved,if you tighten them while the car is supported with the suspension dropped then when you put the wheels back on and lower the car off its jack's or stands and as the suspension travels through its movement as load is taken up the geometry changes and once settled and with ride height achieved the bushes will be preloaded with torsion, this will result in premature failure of those bushes and on a lightly sprung car like the Elise, while still new and offering some torsion could in the right circumstances create unwanted restrictive torsion to that component when rotated in the opposing direction from its initial pre load, basically becoming a small but reasonably powerful torsion spring on the mounting of that component. Always achieve correct suspension placement before tightening of these sort of bushings,if you have no pit or a 4 poster then in some cases to allow access where the bolts can't be reached with the wheels on then you must raise the car by its suspension as near as possible to the wheel centre line leaving the body supported as if it were on its wheels.
Agree with everything you said. Would also add that copper grease is a life saver when doing this kind of work.
Guessing that Jack's expert 'mate' will sort that out when fine-tuning the suspension as he will have the facilities ...
Absolutely correct. I get so annoyed with backyard garagistas who give out really bad methodology .Quality workmanship only comes intelligent engineers who fully understand what they are trying to achieve and have thought it through. Shock absorbers have a rating for expansion and compression and this works closely in conjunction with the spring rate..Some upgrade kits are inappropriately matched and are far worse than the original specification, and often of low quality. There is so much to consider - so many variables. The one thing that I know for sure is that you must not trust other people for a true real definitive answer .sadly,it seems that the idiots have the loudest voices!! Buy the very best adjustable shocks and be prepared to buy a few sets of top quality springs. I only use Eibach - any problems and they fix it.
It's more expensive this but you achieve the correct end result and learn so much. And coincidentally, you discover a lot of BS\ misinformation. Good luck everyone.
Come on Jack, I tune in for despair and failure!! Don’t be getting all positive on me now🤣🤣🤣
It’s great when a plan comes together. You always inspire me to do jobs on my cars, it can be done with a decent set of tools and a bit of patience. The new garage is great too. That really must help.
I have a new set of Bilsteins for my 944. I was going to fit them over the winter but my health got in the way.
I’ll drive it this summer then do the full hit in the winter. Springs, shocks and bushings.
Love the channel and keep the vids coming👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
To set ride height on a car with adjustable suspension, come up with a target height front and rear, then cut wooden blocks to the appropriate lengths. Fiddle with the suspension and check height with the blocks, raising or lowering as necessary. Works so much better than faffing with a flexible metal tape measure that is 12 feet long.
Glad you’ve discovered the joys of working in a proper garage! 👍
Jack, you said it yourself...this was a nice job cause nothing was seized...and then proceeded to put all your new bolts in without any GREASE...Always grease bolts and nuts...unless specifically told not to. You may be the 'lucky' person having to take them off in 5-10-15 years...Glad the new shocks are good tho...;D
Well done Jack, those Bilstein are very good upgrade. Cheers
Love EliseParts! Ian and Geary give brilliant support! 👍
Fitting springs before spring springs. Neat job, like that you still put a lot of love into it despite the sloppy 'fix' by previous owners. Really restoring it to former glory (and beyond).

Jack, number 27, you are finally on the right path now!!! Keep going down this fun road so all of us can enjoy this path. Keep it up! 👍👍👍
Great upgrade. Didn't see in the video but there should be Duralac (or similar ) between the steel shock brackets and the aluminium chassis. If not it will corrode (galvanic corrosion) the chassis in time. I've seen chassis's suffer this and its never good
Which version of Duralac would you recommend? Green or yellow? Also a similar would be the likes of Nickel anti-seize? Of course not Copper as that would only speed up the process.
@@98_martin90 green is a new formula that is less toxic and more effective at isolating the different metals apparently. I’m using green now.
@@98_martin90 you can use either . Anti seize would not be of any use unfortunately
Don't you use A TORQUE WRENCH. IF NOT YOU NEED TO USE ONE TO TORQUE TO PROPER SPEC.
You need to join the boys on SELOC for a track day and really explore this car. It will blow you away!
Well done Jack, that went very smoothly and easily for once 😉
fab job jack your smile and enthusiasm is infectious even at the darkest of times
Will feel even better once the Geo is sorted, Steve G (Guglielmi Motorsport) is a top man and certainly knows his stuff. You are certainly getting the right people involved in sorting out the car out. Eliseparts are also a great supplier and have some great products for the Elise.
Well done Jack! Any chance of some bike content, even just a few pics of your old bikes?
Yes, good call. Don’t remember him mentioning his bike past, much before. The Ohlins analogy shows good experience.
Wait a minute Jack, didn’t you once ride with AdLee, way back when?
The algorithm works. I had an advert for Enidine industrial shock absorbers. Never had that ad before! Watched it though to help with the Frankenlise’s repair bills.
Ah thank you Sparky!!
That's great .. really pleased at how positively things turned out. Very much looking forward to future episodes.
Im super happy I run into your video, now i want my elise as well. Greetings From Poland
Great you had an 'easy' job, & your passion shining through for this car/project!
I am super happy for you, and your enthusiasm is brilliant to see, great work Jack and well done, what a transformation. 😃👌
Great work Jack, delighted that it all seems to have gone right for you first time - look forward to seeing the geometry video. Best, Chris
Your comedic timing is shockingly precise.
Nice one Jack. A good choice with the S2 Bilstein setup 👍.
Nice job Jack, frankly sounds better and by the sound of it it rides better as well 👍 happy days 👍😀.
Great job, new shocks, perfect 🏁🏁🏁👍👍👍
Another Great bit of content Jack! You’re channel is by far my favourite bud …. Your doing a cracking job 👍
As always… thanks chap!!
@@Number27 You deserve it Jack!😉
Great to see you having so much fun. You are selling me on the Lotus. Great video.
Well done Jack. Great work
Those roads over there lotus made roads naturally beautiful love seeing u in the elise brother
Great video jack , I like the stance that gap under the arch suits it’s now … looks great 👍
It’s always a pleasure to watch your videos like being with a mate thx 🙏
Even during my off hours my job sorta requires me to keep an eye on the news of the world, but today I just could not stomach watching the news anymore. Then I thought, the #27 guy that talks with a smile. Thank you!
Ah thanks chap!!
I am no longer part of an audience for the legacy media, and I am all the better for it. I did not even know it was Easter.
Awesome you work on your own cars. Greatly appreciate your enthusiasm and technical know-how. Thank you Jack for this Number 27 Garage Vlog. Lotus once had a dealership in my town, I often peeked through the window on my walks and always liked a real sportscar dealership so close to the center of town. Good fun, possibly a trackday soon?😎✌
That looked like a nice straight forward job, credit to the design engineers also.
I have the garage space to work on my car but I would love a ramp so much easier than axel stands etc.
Love the Elise content.
Glad to see that smile of yours back matey! 🥳
Thanks old boy!!
Changed from original Konis to Bilstein around 10 yrs ago. The konis were noisy, the bilsteins so compliant. Got mine from Bell & Colvill and had to wait for the exchange rate to be favourable so I didn’t get hit for import tax.
Had the Eliseparts quick rack fitted soon after. So much better.
Eliseparts are awesome, I still use them now.
Elise-Shop and Yvo Tuk in Holland are also a good choice.
Enjoy Frankie
Nice one Jack, proper suspenders at last
Did the same upgrade here from Koni's to the bilsteins. Now fit some Yoko AD08's.
Great choice for a road going S1. Makes you wonder what some people are thinking when they spec their own spring rate and put cheapo shocks on instead of trusting Bilstein and Lotus though...
One day I hope to own an Elise - ive loved them since the day they were ’born’, as an ex Karter, I know how well they drive (friend had one years ago). Love watching your journey 👍
Thank you!! I’m moving this car!!
Hey, Jack. You look really happy! That's awesome! Cheers!:)
That should certainly help the performance of your Lotus! Stay well Jack.
before the geometry gets done, you need to take one wheel off at a time, + drop the car onto an axlestand [close to removed wheel] on the sill. slacken the top/bottom shock bolts off a few turns, then carefully [using a small block]jack the suspension up on the bottom balljoint, until the car just starts to lift off the stand. this will be "ride height". now tighten both bolts up, + repeat x 3 first time you have smiled at the end of an episode for a while....
Great looking car !
Enjoyed that. This is fast becoming "The Car That Jack Built" ,, Been there done that a few times and found it far more satisfying than taking delivery on any new car.
By the way, soon after getting his S2 Elise twelve years ago, my son discovered rumbling front wheel bearings. New ones obtained and fitted. These cars are easy to work on, even the delightful K-Series tucked away at the back. Incidentally, those front wheel bearings were ones used on some Vauxhalls so not expensive specialist items. Another bonus.
Finally, you mention Motor Cycles. With your Italian roots nothing less than a MV Agusta I should imagine ,,, .😉
Thank you!! I had a few bikes.. one Honda, one Ducati748 , two Aprilia RSVR, on BMW GS and loads of scramblers!
When I did my tvr it tuck me days to set up nice job 👏
nice. always good when you set to do a job and it just works. exactly know what you mean with it all going wrong at each step. no 5 min job is ever a 5 min job!
Great job well done 👍😎
I've recently ordered Bilstein B12 for my project car (a BMW E38). I hope I'll be just as happy!
Cheers Jack. Easy peasy, suspension squeezy. :)
Good to see you so pleased. You deserve it after all the hardship :P
I am utterly dampered by how easy that is 😂
Without doubt quickly becoming my number 1 youtube channel...Excellant content....
That’s great to hear, thank you!
The smile on your face said it all, as for ride hight it'll probably settle a little lower after a few miles so I wouldn't worry over a few mms
Higher ride height means no problem over speed bumps. It's a good choice in the Uk!
Great job Jack, interesting and informative, love the enthusiasm on all the cars, keep the vids coming 👍👍
My dream car in the best colour! Love it!!!

@@elena8341 Nice but do you have any videos of purple Lotus Elises?
Great job.
Nice upgrade. Those rotors on the front have a hefty lip on them.
HI JACK !!!! a man with sense !!! Ryobi Tools ,, there Ok are nt they ,, infact I think there very good "VERY" is the key word for the money
This and the Ferrari are my favourite two cars of yours, please can you do a review/feature of the quick lifts, they look a very useful tool.
Best video so far. Love the Elise content! Pleased you’ve gone for the toelinks too! My only concern is that the Elise should only be jacked up on 2 specific places along the chassis rails as denoted by stickers. I would use a small block so that your garage jack only touches on those points! Look forward to more content. Duralac is good paint to protect from any corrosion between the ali chassis & the steel suspension mounting points.
I did use rubber blocks on the jacking points! And duralac should not be necessary since the suspension mounts are powdercoated.
Winner winner, chicken dinner Jack. And tje garage makes the diference. Jack you need a impact driver :)
Calipers are really guestimators, but using the lower extendable arm would provide more accuracy.
Ace mate love it
Somebody suggested using copper slip on your bolts. I doubt that will be of any use to you. Brakes and suspension components are under high stress, and would rather have Loc-Tite, to ensure everything stays put under high dynamic loads.
Spring was off the collar on full droop on the front shock !
Great result👍 new front disks and pads next?
Your garage is fantastic, I have to move 3 bikes, and a lawnmower at a bare minimum to work on my car!
Steady on Jack, a video with no disasters?! Whatever next? Look forward to seeing this aligned and you taking it out for a good drive. What bikes did you have by the way? I had loads of bikes too, especially 2 strokes
Just a safety tip on the quickjack. After fully raising, let it down on the safety locks. Much safer and sturdier that way! I have a set, very handy bit of kit.
I did that.. it’s just not on the video!
@@Number27 Glad to hear 👍
Good job. After geometry setup the next step has to be some decent tyres. An Elise deserves some decent UHP tyres to make the most of that chassis!
Yes, tires are on the list
@@Number27 'Tires' ... makes you sleepy ... 'Tyres' ? Maybe yo have your spellcheck set to the US Default rather than English ???
(No big deal though ..)
You should tighten the mounting bolts with the susspension loaded, youll wreck the rubber bush's....
Didn't know you were a bike guy, we have that in common. I put a Hagon monoshock I ordered from your homeland on my Honda 919(Hornet 900 in Europe) that transformed the handling. Yes, Ohlins would have been better, but for a linkageless rear shock it was a great value for the money on a road going bike. If I was tracking it, it would be Ohlins all the way.
Interestingly, I also ordered Gaz adjustables for my Locost 7 with a Miata IRS and had a tremendous improvement over Biltsteins, but in fairness, the GAZ's were spec'd with consideration of the geometry whereas the Bilsteins were "off the shelf"
Gaz make great shocks.. I think these just have springs that are too soft..
Number 27 in SHOCK non problematic good job...
A shockingly good vid! ;)
Very nice. Do you NOT have to tighten the lower bolt with wheels on the ground? I had to do that on my challenger and thought it was standard procedure. Granted it’s an American dodge and struts, but I tightened them unloaded at first and the bilstein struts clunked. Loosened and retightened with wheels on the ground and problem went away. Enjoying your videos!!!
Jack you want a 10mm rake front to rear in order to ensure you don't get any aerodynamic body lift. I ran 110/120mm for 100,000 miles with no issues on the road
Excellent video showing changing shocks is not the " black art " some shops would have us believe. One point though, I notice you didn't use a torque wrench at all. On such critical components, is that advisable?
Jack talks the talk and needs to torque the torque as well ...
Hi Jack, great video, I’m glad the shocks were a success. Could you give some more info and maybe a link to the Quick Jacks please, or have you already done it and I’ve missed it ?
Yes at last the lotus a little go kart 👍👨🏻🏭
Nothing is wrong with spending on the penny , it's even better
Get those "new" rods installed before you get the alignment etc sorted out. Super low means grounding out and that is always a negative. Fine on a track but our roads are far from smooth.

Agreed. I was astonished at the effect perished end links did to the ride height and ride in the rear of my Integra.
Changing shocks is incredibly easy with this car! Although I would have suggested that you go with Nitrons instead of the stock Bilsteins. But I'm glad you got the ride you were looking for. Would you mind posting the jack points that you used to pick the Elise up on the Quickjack? I can't lift my car with my Quickjack using points from the front and just in front of the rear wheels (points A and B according to Lotus) as the car wants to tip over to the rear.
I used the standard points.. just before the undertary at the back,. Which is almost middle of the car to be far and then the end of the main chassis frame at the front. Seemed pretty stable..
Non-pro tip; cut bits of cardboard to fit the distance you're trying to measure, then measure the cardboard.

well done, great job. but you need a new number plate
22:22 (headline time) on 22/02/2022.... I'll hold off watching until 22:22.... No, sadly it's 22:21 long!!
I have been considering a similar upgrade on my MX5, looking at B12 set , but probably going for Tein Flex Z as similar price but are adjustable for firmness and ride height. Can you let me know where you got the lift from, it looks fantastic.
Suggest you to send those Gaz back to that factory they refurb them for really cheap and you can sell them out ;)
@Number27 what car lift are you using sir?
Also, the Duralac stuff others are talking about is a must must!!!
Good video. One thing you need to address is the front number plate
Done!
I was looking at those quick jacks in Costco and for my elise. Have you used blocks to align to the chassis jacking points or is it touching the entire sill? My car is very lot and I’m concerned about clearance! Thanks 👍
if you're looking to spend a little more. I think your next purchase should be some new tyres. I did both shocks and tyres to my Elise and both padded back handsomely
22:22 on twoty two day... nice :)
Jack, I could be totally out to lunch here, but it looked on your video, that the rear brake pads are not swiping the entire surface of the rotor. I tried to take a look by pausing, and it looks like I can see a portion of the slot and vent holes near the center of the disc, left side of the car, that is not being contacted. Maybe they are supposed to be that way? I'm not an Elise expert. :-P Great content as always and very fun to watch as a fellow non-professional, car enthusiast.
Hey Jack. I think I have the rest of the fittings for those motorsport rear toe links in the garage somewhere. Double sheer brackets etc for the Ali uprights. Let me know if you’re still on the look out for these parts. All the best, James
Hi James.. yes if they for the S1! Jack.pe@btopenworld.com
