nickel based anti-seize tends to less reactive but more pricey, copper slip can fuse on certain metals.

I would use ceramic grease on bolts.

  • @areyouundoingthatorwhat9181

Any bush that is clamped perpendicular to its movement in use needs to be bolted tightly ONLY once the correct ride height is achieved,if you tighten them while the car is supported with the suspension dropped then when you put the wheels back on and lower the car off its jack's or stands and as the suspension travels through its movement as load is taken up the geometry changes and once settled and with ride height achieved the bushes will be preloaded with torsion, this will result in premature failure of those bushes and on a lightly sprung car like the Elise, while still new and offering some torsion could in the right circumstances create unwanted restrictive torsion to that component when rotated in the opposing direction from its initial pre load, basically becoming a small but reasonably powerful torsion spring on the mounting of that component. Always achieve correct suspension placement before tightening of these sort of bushings,if you have no pit or a 4 poster then in some cases to allow access where the bolts can't be reached with the wheels on then you must raise the car by its suspension as near as possible to the wheel centre line leaving the body supported as if it were on its wheels.

Absolutely correct. I get so annoyed with backyard garagistas who give out really bad methodology .Quality workmanship only comes intelligent engineers who fully understand what they are trying to achieve and have thought it through. Shock absorbers have a rating for expansion and compression and this works closely in conjunction with the spring rate..Some upgrade kits are inappropriately matched and are far worse than the original specification, and often of low quality. There is so much to consider - so many variables. The one thing that I know for sure is that you must not trust other people for a true real definitive answer .sadly,it seems that the idiots have the loudest voices!! Buy the very best adjustable shocks and be prepared to buy a few sets of top quality springs. I only use Eibach - any problems and they fix it.
It's more expensive this but you achieve the correct end result and learn so much. And coincidentally, you discover a lot of BS\ misinformation. Good luck everyone.

Come on Jack, I tune in for despair and failure!! Don’t be getting all positive on me now🤣🤣🤣
It’s great when a plan comes together. You always inspire me to do jobs on my cars, it can be done with a decent set of tools and a bit of patience. The new garage is great too. That really must help.
I have a new set of Bilsteins for my 944. I was going to fit them over the winter but my health got in the way.
I’ll drive it this summer then do the full hit in the winter. Springs, shocks and bushings.

To set ride height on a car with adjustable suspension, come up with a target height front and rear, then cut wooden blocks to the appropriate lengths. Fiddle with the suspension and check height with the blocks, raising or lowering as necessary. Works so much better than faffing with a flexible metal tape measure that is 12 feet long.
Glad you’ve discovered the joys of working in a proper garage! 👍

Jack, you said it yourself...this was a nice job cause nothing was seized...and then proceeded to put all your new bolts in without any GREASE...Always grease bolts and nuts...unless specifically told not to. You may be the 'lucky' person having to take them off in 5-10-15 years...Glad the new shocks are good tho...;D

before the geometry gets done, you need to take one wheel off at a time, + drop the car onto an axlestand [close to removed wheel] on the sill. slacken the top/bottom shock bolts off a few turns, then carefully [using a small block]jack the suspension up on the bottom balljoint, until the car just starts to lift off the stand. this will be "ride height". now tighten both bolts up, + repeat x 3 first time you have smiled at the end of an episode for a while....

By the way, soon after getting his S2 Elise twelve years ago, my son discovered rumbling front wheel bearings. New ones obtained and fitted. These cars are easy to work on, even the delightful K-Series tucked away at the back. Incidentally, those front wheel bearings were ones used on some Vauxhalls so not expensive specialist items. Another bonus.

Yes, Ohlins would have been better, but for a linkageless rear shock it was a great value for the money on a road going bike. If I was tracking it, it would be Ohlins all the way.
Interestingly, I also ordered Gaz adjustables for my Locost 7 with a Miata IRS and had a tremendous improvement over Biltsteins, but in fairness, the GAZ's were spec'd with consideration of the geometry whereas the Bilsteins were "off the shelf"

Jack you want a 10mm rake front to rear in order to ensure you don't get any aerodynamic body lift. I ran 110/120mm for 100,000 miles with no issues on the road

Excellent video showing changing shocks is not the " black art " some shops would have us believe. One point though, I notice you didn't use a torque wrench at all. On such critical components, is that advisable?

Jack talks the talk and needs to torque the torque as well ...

Hi Jack, great video, I’m glad the shocks were a success. Could you give some more info and maybe a link to the Quick Jacks please, or have you already done it and I’ve missed it ?

Get those "new" rods installed before you get the alignment etc sorted out. Super low means grounding out and that is always a negative. Fine on a track but our roads are far from smooth.

Changing shocks is incredibly easy with this car! Although I would have suggested that you go with Nitrons instead of the stock Bilsteins. But I'm glad you got the ride you were looking for. Would you mind posting the jack points that you used to pick the Elise up on the Quickjack? I can't lift my car with my Quickjack using points from the front and just in front of the rear wheels (points A and B according to Lotus) as the car wants to tip over to the rear.

      @Number27  Před 2 lety

I used the standard points.. just before the undertary at the back,. Which is almost middle of the car to be far and then the end of the main chassis frame at the front. Seemed pretty stable..

Non-pro tip; cut bits of cardboard to fit the distance you're trying to measure, then measure the cardboard.

I have been considering a similar upgrade on my MX5, looking at B12 set , but probably going for Tein Flex Z as similar price but are adjustable for firmness and ride height. Can you let me know where you got the lift from, it looks fantastic.

I was looking at those quick jacks in Costco and for my elise. Have you used blocks to align to the chassis jacking points or is it touching the entire sill? My car is very lot and I’m concerned about clearance! Thanks 👍

Jack, I could be totally out to lunch here, but it looked on your video, that the rear brake pads are not swiping the entire surface of the rotor. I tried to take a look by pausing, and it looks like I can see a portion of the slot and vent holes near the center of the disc, left side of the car, that is not being contacted. Maybe they are supposed to be that way? I'm not an Elise expert. :-P Great content as always and very fun to watch as a fellow non-professional, car enthusiast.
