    The 993-generation was the last air-cooled 911, and this Turbo was the last air-cooled 911 Turbo. We've reviewed other 993s and came away impressed with how refined they are compared to earlier air-cooled 911s, and we found the 993 Turbo stays true to this pattern. Watch and learn what Vu thinks about this 16,00-mile Turbo!
    We couldn't have done this review without the help of RBS Garage (www.rbsgarage.com/), a collection made available to us by owners Robert and Joel Bassam, from ‪@EasternMotors‬.

    Owned both pre and post 911's to the 993 turbo (plus other porsche's). The 993turbo was and is the best 911 that I've ever owned (for 10yrs). Stupid me to sell it.

    My father in law traded his 85 turbo for this one! I I remember going with him to brumo Porsche in Jacksonville Fl to pick it up. It was sitting in middle of the showroom. It was bitter sweet because he really loved the 85 930 which it only had 30k on the odometer! However driving the new 993 turbo home we quickly forgot about the 930! Lol! I think he paid 138k for the 993.

    Have owned a 993 twin turbo since 2001. Prior to that owned a 70 911S for 20 yrs.
    Clearly, this model was the peak iteration of the air cooled Porsche.
    Fastest, most comfortable, livable, reliable version of the 911 bodied car that Zuffenhausen produced.
    Mine has 47k and drives like new. The engine sounds like a plane engine.
    An Engineering masterpiece.

    993 turbo review that's covered everything we know about them to those of you that currently own one- me a (997.26sp'turbo 4wd) & black. & will recognize exactly what he's talking about. the mileage or this car is crazy low & would rate at a handful maybe two in the world. i have a 1996-97mag with a burgundy red 993t on the cover & remember back then thinking how huge the hp was for the time, but now as we know a fairly medium nice power nowadays. A well sorted review & always enjoy looking at another collectable porsche.

    I purchased my 993tt in Memphis 12 years ago and drove it back to Boston. Got my first speeding ticket with it less than 24hrs later. These are solid and quick. The boost is intoxicating. Everytime I think about selling it I just drive it and that thought goes straight out of my head. Someone else mentioned the Golden Rod by Fister and they are right, best mod for 993's. No slop in the linkage with it installed. Mine at 115k miles does not rattle or creak and drives like a 38k mile car. Vu, I may have missed it but I don't think you mentioned the power assisted clutch, so easy to actuate. Everything about the car is "rock star". I would have given it 9.5, you would have too if you had a chance to run it up the scale 🙂

    I owned an Arena Red 993 Turbo for over ten years and just sold it last year - and agree with almost all of your comments. One issue is the value of the model has risen (and they are so milage sensitive) so much that DD is pretty well out of the question. There really is no turbo lag, the power is linear and the car does go like stink. So why did I sell? A few reasons 1 - the value climbed so high that I noticed I was not driving it much due to risk 2- I had 993’s for almost 20 years and it was time to try other cars in the Porsche lineup, god forbid I was getting bored of it lol. 3 - Fuel consumption - these cars are THIRSTY - like 12 mpg in the city, so running costs were quite expensive. 4 - Rising maintenance costs, although I do all my own work, including engine builds so that was mitigated somewhat, but parts have skyrocketed
    So what did I get to replace it? A mint Cobalt Blue 997.1 GT3 with 11K miles, Euro Spec, and I pocketed pretty well what I paid for the 993 Turbo in the process. Regrets? NONE - I enjoyed the Turbo, great car, but it was time to move on and have someone else enjoy the car, and the GT3 is just on at another level.
    Great review and nice work!

      Agree with you Mike especially point #2. I had a 1997 993tt in White. I had it for 10 years and never really loved it. For me the basic suspension was just too mushy and I am not a fan of 4wd in a sports car. I suppose I should have gone to PSS10s but instead put it up for sale and sold it in about 8 hours. No real regrets.

  • @fredericauerbach2227
    @fredericauerbach2227 Před rokem +1

    Good review Vu. I have a '97 C4S, and, except for the obvious power difference, many similarities.
    The shift throws are long and rubbery, as you state, a common complaint. Darin Fister and Jeff Gamroth offer corrections, the Golden Rod(GR) and short shift kit(ssk). FD Motorsports' GR is a must for most 993-owners, and improves things. The ssk helps, but not dramatically- I have both. Surprised the owner(s) of this car did not add the GR, or both?
    I argue that supple leather, not on this car, while not the favorite of all, is very comfortable and (was) fashionable- still is, in my view.
    The car you drove has other obvious factory options: onboard computer, rear wiper, dual exhaust tips, these being standard on the Turbo S.
    Floor-mounted pedals definitely are different from most manuals. Such does not enable stretching feet under the pedals on long drives. I'm 6'4".
    Referencing your 996, many 993-owners are not fans of 4-spoke steering wheels and swap for the 3-spoke, like in your 996.
    The overall smaller size and shapeliness when parked next to a 992, for example, are dramatic.
    Too bad you drove the car only in the city and in traffic, not having opportunity to open it up..!
    Fred

    Another excellent video. I’ll have to stick with my stock Amazon green 964. But I really enjoy all the videos you produce. A question: I have a little rust along the lower edge of the windshield. Maybe a fourth of an inch. It is shame to have to probably replace the original windshield after the body work?

    • @Rushwind100
      @Rushwind100 Před rokem

      Hey Greg, yes there is certainly a high probability they guy removing it will break it. We took a rock to our original Sigla Pilkington windshield on our 964 Turbo back in 2018. When the guy replaced it with a OEM Pilkington, he did fully break the original. I would not take that chance if I were you. Better off seeing if a good body guy could attend to the rust spot without disturbing the windshield. The hard part is that the rubber seal surrounds the windshield perimeter, so they will not be able to remove that to do the rust repair. They would only be able to prop it up on each side of the rust & work from there.

    • @PorscheClubofAmerica
      @PorscheClubofAmerica  Před rokem

      Find a good bodyshop that is familiar with a 964 windshield. We recently had the same exact rust repair done on Projekt 964 and they were able to remove the windshield without breaking it.

  • @HLife719
    @HLife719 Před rokem +3

    The 993 Turbo with the stock turbo chargers starts delivering significant boost from around 2,500 rpm. In any gear at any speed, even with low rpm in a high gear, all you need to do is plant your foot on the accelerator and enjoy the short moment in anticipation before that intoxicating swooooosh firmly comes on. Even today, with slightly enhanced Motronic, but stock turbochargers almost no one will overtake you, even on some low traffic stretches of German autobahns, if you don’t want. I always take the long way home.

    I've owned multiple 911 generations through the years including Turbo variants, as well as 2 928's, 2 944's, a Boxster, etc... but I'll never understand why people claim that 911 doors sound "vault like" upon closing. The only model Porsche or car for that matter that's truly sounded vault like to me has been the 944, with the 928 coming in at a close 2nd. Beautiful 993TT BTW!

    Car show: 10 😃
    Daily driver: 7 (kinda too valuable to daily) 🤑
    Road trip: 3 (perhaps more fuel efficient and reliable than its competitors like C5 Z06 and Ferrari 355, but still 12mpg is low) 😆
