- Welcome back! Join me today as I discuss Antonio Conte, taking a look at his managerial history and his style of management before explaining his tactics, using his title winning Inter Milan and Chelsea side’s as examples.

Born in Lecce, Italy in 1969, Antonio Conte is a former professional footballer who played in midfield. An energetic, tenacious and intelligent player, Conte began his career with local side Lecce before he moved to Juventus in 1991, winning 14 major honours in just 13 seasons.
After hanging up his boots Conte went straight into coaching, spending a season as the assistant manager at Siena before taking the full job at Arezzo. Conte followed this up with spells at Bari, Siena and Atalanta before getting the Juventus job in 2011. 3 trophy laden seasons later he moved into the international scene, guiding Italy to the quarter finals of Euro 2016. He followed this up with a move to England, winning the 2016/17 Premier League in his first season with Chelsea and the FA Cup the year after. Finally, Conte returned to Serie A and took the Inter Milan job in 2019, ultimately winning the competition in his second season. But at the time of release, Antonio Conte is without a job.
► CHECK US OUT ON TWITCH: bit.ly/SMDTwitch
Much like Pep Guardiola’s 4-3-3 and Sir Alex Ferguson’s 4-4-2 at Manchester United, Antonio Conte has an iconic system: the 3-5-2. Key to this shape are three ball playing centre backs, a deep-lying playmaker behind two advanced and energetic midfielders and two centre forwards. The wing backs are also key, creating a 3-3-4 in attack as they hold his side’s attacking width before dropping in to create a 5-3-2 without the ball. Conte is very much from the Diego Simeone school of management and he demands hard work, aggression and intensity from every one of his players without exception. Whilst on the counter is where an Antonio Conte team are at their most dangerous, he still has a plan in possession. Often attacking quickly with direct, vertical passing, Conte does use a shorter approach at times to create space to attack higher up the pitch. In the final third Conte likes to create overloads out wide with his outside midfielders and wing backs, creating chances through crosses. Alternatively, he does have his central midfielders link with the forwards and create by playing into his goalscorers.
Statman Dave Clips ➡ bit.ly/StatmanClips
Whilst the 3-5-2 is Conte’s iconic shape, he’s a very meticulous manager and often makes lots of small tweaks and adjustments to get the best out of his players or to gain an advantage over his opposition. His Chelsea side made great use of the 3-4-3 on their way to the 2016/17 Premier League whilst his title winning Internazionale have seen a midfield tweak, with Nicolo Barella operating from a more advanced position than his other midfield partners.
Antonio Conte is analytical, tactically superb and a great motivator but he also improves players on the training ground. Simply put, the Italian is a world class manager with a very intense and aggressive style. Defensively his teams are very solid and organised whilst being very efficient on the counter attack. Whilst his football can be abrasive to some, you can’t argue that he gets results.
But what do you think? How good is Antonio Conte? And where do you think he’ll be managing next? Let me know in the comments below!

Lol thanks Dave. As a spurs fan I've found this really helpful
Currently, players just walk through Man Utd's defence like they're not even there. I'd love to see them do that with Conte as manager lol he'd shoot them
“I’d keeel him”
He would kill them if they even conceded one goal in a game
Yeah and after 2 years those exact players will rebel against him and he will be gone
If they're alive.....
@@nivi6414 what? Players don’t revolt against conte he falls out with owners if they don’t back him or he leaves. The guy is a winner and has integrity.
Players like Dalot and Telles would be interesting at wing back under Conte. On the flip side players like sancho and Rashford may struggle unless we go 3-4-3. I'm a big fan of Conte. Would give us structure and a clear style.
I think he would go 3-4-1-2.
With 3-4-3 Bruno can't play as cam
Hazard and Pedro played good under Conte so the 3-4-3 could be promising.. only thing is Bruno might play as a centre mid or not at all

Conte would be a breath of fresh air who could give United players a kick up the ass with his winning standards
Spurs*
Too late. Spurs won the El Sackio. Gotta give it to my boy Nuno. Sacrifice himself for the greater goods
Would love to see an Erik ten Hag comparison video, I haven't watch a lot of Ajax for a while and he plays with a more familiar system to United than Conte. However, like a girl who makes bad relationship choices, I'm more drawn to the toxic one because I know the ride will be an exciting one.
I LOL'ed
Ten Hag's style of play (from what I've seen, which is far from every Ajax game) seems more suitable than Conte's to build on what Solskjaer has been doing. Unfortunately, I think he's too bound to be the next manager at Barcelona instead. I mean, why the hell haven't they sacked Koeman yet? Maybe because they view Ten Hag as the only replacement option, and he's staying at Ajax until the end of the season.
Conte is far down the list of who I would personally prefer as the next United manager. But as the clearly most available option - and the only one that the club has been in contact with, according to most sources - I'm mentally preparing myself more and more to see the Italian come in the near future. And watching videos like this makes me a curious to see what he would do at United. We just want some change at the moment. Too bad Conte is highly unlikely to be a long term project, which is preferable considering our traditions of developing and integrating young academy players in the first team.
@@Fabio035 I agree with you. I think there are many better options but I will take conte over nothing. He's a proven winner
@@Fabio035 Ten Haag doesnt seem to like the idea of leaving halfway mid-season.
Barca hasnt sacked Koeman yet could possibly be due to the fact that they are cash strapped, and they are probably also considering Xavi.
@@Fabio035 we are facing an identity crisis. No style, no passion at all. If we keep going like that and stick on young academy players (even when they are not good enough), we will become just another Arsenal (no offence here). We need men to do the jobs and boys to build from it, not the other way around.
Actually I prefer United to sack Ole right after the Liverpool game because the next head coach will have a week and a half to prepare for Atalanta away game. Man, that game will be crucial to our Champions League journey. But the board decided not to do that and gave him the Spurs game. So if the Spurs game not going well (which I think is a certain possibility) and they sack Ole after that, the next manager will only have 2 or 3 days to prepare for Atalanta. We might as well go with an interim manager but I can't see who can play the interim role at United right now. For what they've failed, Carrick, McKenna and Phelan should go because they are just not good enough.
That summer we made unnecessary signings like Amad, DVB and Pellistri when we needed a central midfield rebuild is hitting us now !
Ikr!! All that to get Sancho in the January window and all those three signings almost never seeing the pitch 🤦
And even Sancho is struggling
Perfect plan would be conte now so he can turn the season around and hopefully make us title contenders next year and then ten hag for the future, if conte quits after 2 years
Why do people keep going on about Ten Haag? What has he done?
good football with Ajax and gotten to a champions league semi final playing amazing football
This makes no sense. Conte and Ten Hag play different football and hence require a different profile of player. You can't keep jumping from one style to another otherwise we'll just end up with the mess of a squad that was at the end of Jose's reign again.
Animesh Khare you asked what ten hag has done
@@vlogfam2940 Eusebio Di Francesco has done all that Ten Hag has done. Why not him if those are your only requirements?
This is why I love this channel! Always up to date and gives an in-depth analysis on players\ managers
United look so lost tactically so I want a manager who's going to look into the smallest details when it comes to coaching these players. I get Conte might be too defensive but our defense is really bad and he would secure that backline and make us better with the ball. We struggle to keep possession and don't know what to do with the ball which is why everything looks so forced in the attack and we have no patterns of play. I'd take him over Zidane rn bc I feel like Zidane is a better man manager but Conte would develop these players better and we need an identity QUICK
Bro conte is not defensive structure, conte is more attack than zidane 🔥🔥 last year inter is more attacking than other italy clubs bro, so conte is perfect suit for manu 🔥🔥🔥 like 2 cf striker roanldo and cavani 🔥🔥
@@naveethmohamed4729 I'm saying other people who don't really watch him would think he's a purely defensive manager. He finds ways to get the best out of the attack while structuring the defense to be solid at all times. Only problem with Conte is his record in cup competitions and if we play with a front 2 and Bruno behind them, we'll have no purpose for players like Rashford, Sancho, Martial, and Greenwood who are all better off the wing than at ST rn
@@rtads11 ok bro i got it may be according to Manu squad, he use 3412 bro lmf - rashford rmf- Greenwood or sancho and amf - bruno or jesse or van de beek, and 2 cf - ronaldo and cavani or martial is good for now conte side 🔥
@@naveethmohamed4729 we have to trust Conte to get the best out of this squad , the guy is intelligent he knows we have a lot of wide players, this squad is magic for him to work with. Ole was totally clueless to understand the potential of this team.
How is conte defensive? Playing 3 at the back doesn't make a team defensive
You just made me love Conte

Great video Dave! Very insightful and not too long winded 👍 Keep up the quality CONTEnt 😉
For a second there when the video started I thought Conte was actually there
We can only dream man..hopefully next week will be different
😂💔
Those who think Conte plays defensive way only, try to find matches where his teams had less than 55% possession.
So he's attacking?
Possession dosent translate to attacking , we could aslo keep possession in own half
Possession is attacking? 😅 LVG had 60% possession with United, but boooring and non attacking.
@@indranilmondal1270 Chelsea were the second highest scorers in the 16/17 season🤷🏽♂️one goal behind Tottenham who had 86 so I'll assume they were attacking unless I'm wrong?
@@indranilmondal1270 It was also when Conte was manger of course
I know you cant really say, but I reckon you would love to see a real tactical genius come to united. Would make your job so much more fun
We want Erik Ten Hag because he's shown what he's capable in the league (won it twice dominating and on course for 3, also 2 cup trophies with Ajax), the 18/19 season in Champions League just shy of the final and also his tactical approach with an attacking intent and also pressing style. He plays and gives chances to young players. He'll be the one to take this current group of players and get the best out of them to win us games and trophies as well as cutting out the vibes and instil tactics. Conte is an exceptional manager but I don't think his approach will be as attacking or give many chances to young players.
Can Ten Hag command respect in that dressing room?
love ten hags tactics and would want him at united as my first choice... but with the players we have at the moment, i doubt that he can demand what he wants from these players.
@@KAI-jl1ph can anyone?
@@LCFC-Fox Conte can
He will leave ajax only for barca, it's already known
Meanwhile Ole tells us his team is "close" after being smashed 5 nil by Liverpool yet in the same interview says he's at rockbottom. I dont speak Italian but if Conte gave a press conference in his mother tongue I'd still probably understand more of what he was conveying than Ole's word salad gibberish. Just give Conte the damn job already.
It's Called spin
@@zeeone4492 I wouldn’t give him that much credit. It’s Ole’s attempt at spin but he’s even inept at that.

Cracking video by the way!
regardless of the formation, his style of play is short, quick passes, and players are always moving around. A huge difference from our current forced, pointless long balls.
That's what I thought, people say he's negative football but he's more of a blitzing manager in my eyes Kinda like a 2012-13 Bayern style of blitzing.

Amazing video!
Should've also talked about how his 3-5-2 has been comparatively less effective in the UCL.
explains why he hasn't reach higher than quarter finals in the UCL yet
How come though?
@@jamesss8656 I think conte strategy work best when score is level or his team is winning. When they go behind its tough if opposition happy to conserve. In champs league, in knockout stage especially, its easy to go goal down and the opposition doesn't fall in to his traps then, in fact they play him at his own game and score more on counter
As far as I'm aware. Conte has only qualified from 2 out of 5 CL groups and has a slightly lower win rate than Ole.
@@RedDevil66991 yeah it's not impressive at all bud. Domestic record outstanding tho
I really hope he plays 3 cbs and finally someone can see how awb will be an elite cb
exaclty! just let the broski defend!
What a load of nonsense. AWB has no tactical awareness and crucially, no vision. Conte's CB are expected to play football, all of them. AWB is not Azpilicueta.
Anyone with proper tactical eyes can clearly see Aaron lack the strength, the tactical awareness and the positioning for a CB
I’m so happy he’s signed for us 😍
Please do Low and Luis Enrique.. These two videos will make a huge videos.. Since United fans need to learn from the candidates of new United manager.. Cheers 👊
Remember mind Conte played as a midfielder all his life ! Not a strike Like Ole. Just something to bear in mind!
How are conte teams like breaking teams down because he does seem quite counter attack minded whatever way that might come. Great video😁👏🏼
Absolute no brainer. Tactical genius. He'll probably fall out with the hierarchy within a couple of years, but he'll kick that dressing room into shape and instill an aggressive, winning mentality. The sooner the better.
Ronaldo and ARROW 🏹 up front. Foooookin MINT.

Will u do some videos on coach candidates ? Or a stream?
I think the next statement Dave video should be how Conte will work with the group at Manchester united
Hey. Could you do Rodgers and Joachim Lowe. I think they're more interesting options. Love your work.
Great manager 👍
Our squad is build to play 4-3-3, 4-3-2-1 and 4-2-2-2 formations, we currently don't have enough centre backs to play 3-4-3 or 3-4-1-2 regularly. If we are to get Conte in we'll not only need to get in 2 centre backs (Ideally 1 promoted & 1 bought) and we'll also need a young high potential defensive midfielder but for 4-3-3, 4-3-2-1 and 4-2-2-2 we only need a good defensive midfielder, the rest depends on Cavani staying or leaving us next season. Also, with Erik ten Haag we might start to see the best of Van de Beek.
Nice video Dave! Can you make a video about how Erik Ten Hag would line Man United up? Cheers 😊
Thanks for your video but there is a point that I have to correct is that actually, Conte wasn't the one who convert Brozovic from ACM/CM to CDM. Spalletti was the one who converted him.
United needs Conte
Initially i didnt want him at UTD , However the more i learn and read i am thinking his tactical nuance would find a way im still not 100% but i am leaning towards him because i tink he would find a way
Wow, there is a manager that actually has a plan, to win, football is defending and scoring, u can use defense to initiate an attack or possession to defend, but you can't win without a great defensive scheme, in basketball, they always say defense wins a championship, this notion is not talked more in football coz all that people see is beautiful last passes, n great goals, but even in football a strong defensive foundation allows n give freedom to attack n score, so this notion, he's too defensive is just crap...
👏👏👏
Wow!!..watching this video has made me realize that there can't be any perfect fit than conte for man utd!!
Bari supporter here
ogs need to watch your videos
Y'know the part about Brozovic makes me wonder if Conte would try to do something similar with Bruno. The guy's great at picking passes from deep (even though he doesn't do as often this season) and for an attacking mid is actually a decent defender plus very willing to press. Obviously it would suck to lose him up the pitch with the output he has sometimes but I feel like if anyone could make that shift work, it would be Conte. Would allow him to play in the 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 and make the team more flexible
no way... Bruno is the best going forward he needs to be involved up the pitch.
Antonio Conte playing style similar to Nicolo Barella. Good luck to him and Spurs, From Inter fan here. ⚫🔵
Big fan off conte
That Bayern top is 🔥🔥🔥
Let's go!👶🏽
Worldclass manager
Conte is the kind of coach that can get the best out of even Fred.
Hes not a man utd manager stylistically but we have had a problem with the defence for a long time, back to basics is what we need
Dave you really are starting to look like Timo Werner. Especially with that Germany top 👍
I dont mind either Zidane or Conte it would be a step up from our current situation. Conte will fix our winning mentality, defence and style of play/tactics Zidane can come in 2-3 years later after managing France and getting more experience.
statman i like how u break down the tactical side of the game .p.s am life long united fan but am gutted with our lately form but am a devil till the day i die no matter what!!

I don't think passion, energy and desire is hard to understand
He sounds like a man who KNOWS his own mind and priorities. That's a great start! If he keeps the team exciting, he would be accepted.
This is not a space about Ole, and if he goes, he does so with thanks and best wishes... Still, I do wonder if Ron had not come, but two midfielders with a wider skillset than Matic and Fred (who I am NOT so condemning as many tbh) had INSTEAD arrived, as those two left, again with thanks... hmm
Please do a Zidane tactics analysis next

Please make a video about Ole's tatics.
That black German shirt really looks dope.
Happy to have him at Spurs. We need a good midfield and a gaffer to sort out Kane
need to do one with how he would set up with united
Conte can't possibly set up a good looking team with the current squad. If Dave needs to be realistic he'll have to put up a squad that will anger many fans or he'll put up a fantasy squad that just won't work. If Conte comes be prepared to not see much of Sancho, Greenwood, Rashford and/or Bruno.
@@Galloglaoch i agree its a hard one but conte must see something and hes got history as said changing players position

We can’t afford to mess that Atalanta game
They don’t want conte or whoever the manager will be first match to be against city. Because if we get whooped it creates an immediate divide in the fanbase
@@GLAZERSOUT-oz8kh what's the point of that we know Ole will lose against city and even maybe against Chelsea by that time we may already be out of a champions league spot
Bring a manager now and maybe the environment becomes easy and maybe just maybe we may have a result out of those matches. At this point I think the club's just ruining Ole's legacy.
Conte will get a perfect team to enumerate his tactics in Man Utd. Im not sure how good it will be but he is getting a full set of players that can do the job. Im just worried what will happen to Sancho.
Did Conte not utilise Hazard? Don’t worry. Sancho will hopefully be better under conte

Should have showed what could be conte's possible starting if he signs for united.
People think Conte would be super defensive but he knows that Man Utd is an attacking squad and would adapt to the players. That's how Italian coaches manage teams. They don't have a system like Tiki Taka etc.. They play to the player's strengths.
How do you think he would set up Man United? I really dont have anything against Contes playing style but I´m worried about who he will offer to play his style of football
Sign him up
Even Statman Dave is tired of Ole 🤦
Funny how just a few days things can change 👀
For those who want Conte:
Rashford, Diallo, Sancho, Fernandes and many others simply don't fit his tactics and will have to be sold.
We have to go into transfer window to find at least 1 midfielder, at least 1 centreback and likely a striker that fits his damands.
That's at least 3 transfers inn and the offloading of at least 4 fan favorite players.
All this for a manager that doesn't play with wingers, which is "the united way" since way back to the Busby babes, you can also say goodbye to all youth development and working youngsters into the main team. Conte is a ruthless winner, cost doesn't matter for him. He left Chelsea because he wasn't allowed free reigns, he left Inter Milan because he wasn't given the power and money he was promised ...how do you think Conte's poor temprament would work with the notoriously poor leadership (board and head banker staff)? Moyes, Van Gaal and Mourinho all said the same thing: that Man United isn't run like a football club, but a business. Mourinho's famous "...with Man United was the biggest achievement of my career" ...you know, I believe him.
Conte is a good manager, no doubt.
But he's not a good fit for Man United traditions.
He's not a good fit for the Man United squad.
He's not a good fit for the Man United board/owners.
Signing Conte would, imo, lead to another Mourinho scenario. stay 2, maybe 3, years and win a trophy or two ...then have a meltdown and quit/get sacked ...undoing all the progress and bricklaying Ole has done.
...get Ten Hag!
Are you a coach?
Beggars cannot be choosers
3 at the back is the future. Who else remembers when people were reluctant to let go of the WM formation? No me neither but I heard it happened back in the day
People are saying rashford and sancho etc will struggle under conte I don't think so I think squad rotation with changing formations etc will make it hard to beat united if he becomes manager
The background music is kinda nice😂😂😂
