  • In this video we look at a couple of options for adding chequer plate mirror covers to your Land Rover Defender. We look at the genuine covers that are part of the chequer plate kit from Land Rover PN VPLEP0419 and we also take a look at the new Powerful UK Ltd version which is a full cover and has the added option of a gopro compatible mount.
    These are on our website now :-

    I like it - vastly better than the LR one which looks very odd as it does not fully cover the mirror cover. Excellent product! - my only comment is that I think it may look better in matt black, rather than matt grey - but matt is definitely the way to go.

    Just in case anyone is having sticktion issues with the Polypropylene accessories.....................

    I have now fitted the replacement covers (in warmer weather this time) and they give good indications of having stuck this time. I could not see any difference between the original set and the replacements that you provided. I certainly could not visually detect the adhesion promoter mentioned in your previous email.

    I did not use the wipes you supplied - I used copious amounts of Ambersil Brake and Clutch cleaner and roughened up the contact areas of the poly covers (not the mirrors) with emery cloth.
    As previously, dry fitting did not provide the “click” described in the installation video but I did notice that the replacement RHS (drivers) side did fit slightly better than the original. The LHS was much better but I suspect that the difference between fitting and not fitting is probably outwith the manufacturing tolerance that can be achieved with this material. This argument could also apply to the mirrors themselves of course.

    Anyway, nearly 3 weeks, 500 miles and counting ! They are both still on and look like staying on this time, and do indeed look the part. I wiped them over with a proprietary Vinyl and Rubber care polish and that has given them a bit of a shine…………now to find a GoPro somewhere !
    Grateful Thanks to Simon and the Team for the help and advice and providing replacement parts without quibble.

      Hi Bill - thanks for sharing -we are looking at changing the material to one that has better adhesion properties and we are also using primer on some of the newer parts. Glad its sorted - keep us updated. Simon

    That’s brilliant. I’ll get a set of those when I’m next in UK. Another project might be to see how the checker-plate bonnet panels could be adapted, e.g. for storage, camera mounts (already done). And whether it is strong enough to stand on..

      Mmh - not really pleased with the fit; both units are coming away from the mirrors despite using the wipes and silicone. I am going to take them off (I hope) clean them up and refit - hopefully with a "click" this time.................I did put them on a few days ago when it was nose drippingly cold so that may be an issue - perhaps a heated garage is required :)

  • @billbirch8455

    I refitted the covers as below, paying careful attention to cleanliness and degreasing with isopropanol. I used new double sided 3M automotive tape but no silicone this time (the previous dabs of silicone has etched the shiny black surface so I need to fit the chequer plate to cover up the marks). I dry fitted them again to get the method exactly right. The "click" is really elusive and not convincing, and as before the bottom outside edge doesn't stay in place so I added a small piece of tape there also. It was a much warmer day when I refitted them this time. Yesterday, approximately 2 weeks after the refit, the offside cover fell off, I found it on the garage floor fortunately. Checking the nearside - that cover just came away in my hand with no persuasion. There is no adhesion to the inside of the cover again; the tape sticks strongly to the shiny mirror cover without a problem............what am I doing wrong ? :(

    • @L663
      @L663  Před 2 lety

      Hi Bill - thanks for the feedback. The mirror cover is made from Polypropelene ( same as original LR items ) and this is indeed hard to stick things to - much harder than the painted mirror cover surface. One thing could be to roughen up the inner surface of the mirror cover with some sand paper to remove the glossy surface of the inside of the mirror. Let me know if you need any tape / surface cleaner / another set of covers etc and we will send you free of charge - i am keen to get this resolved for you.

    • @billbirch8455
      @billbirch8455 Před 2 lety +1

      @@L663 Thankyou for the speedy response - especially on Good Saturday :) I must say I would like to take advantage of your very generous offer and try a different set of covers just in case there is a small (minute) difference in dimension sufficient to more effectively enable the "click". I am also running out of surface cleaner! Looking at the covers I have, (O/N 100100311 placed on 26 February 2022 ) they still are pristine on the inside - no indication at all of any adhesion, tape, silicone or otherwise. I will of course return these for your inspection - especially if the replacements achieve a more successful fit for some reason. Frustratingly, I have fitted the full size rear bumper cover (also Polypropelene I think) using the provided tape and silicone and wipe and it is stuck fast - it is a great accessory, to be recommended.

    As below - removed the chequer plate mirror covers - much more easily than Simon demonstrated - the double sided tape had stuck well but the silicone had only stuck - very well - to the actual mirror cover. There was no adhesion to the chequer plate at all. Maybe this needs to be roughened up a bit and also cleaned with the provided wipe before applying silicone? Removing the stuck silicone from the mirror covers was a laborious job ! Dry fitting (no tape/silicone) did produce the "click" but on both sides, the bottom outside edge (by the flasher) does not remain in place. I think I may put a small piece of double sided tape at that spot...............................

    • @L663
      @L663  Před 2 lety

      Good idea about using the wipe on the mirror cover - there may be mould release left on the part from the injection moulding process. One question - why are you removing the covers ?

    During Night time driving i find the Gloss black mirror covers as factory standard creates a reflection on the inside gloss black face of the Near side mirror cover of the Illuminated DEFENDER Dash back panel and causes some confusion of the Rear View from the actual Mirror, maybe it is just me to get use to it - but seems a poor design !!
    Also the Standard Mirrors have a Blind Spot and needs addressing ( Going to have to fit some kind of After market product which tend to look naff ) .
    I will Order the Matt black/grey Covers and see if this negates the reflection

    • @simonjefferson
      @simonjefferson Před 5 měsíci

    • @user-es6jt6eb7t
      @user-es6jt6eb7t Před 5 měsíci

      yes - maybe a 100mm wide matt black tape over the mirror cover just on the face between the mirror and the window would cure the problem.
      i blanked off the first 6 - 8 inches of the end of the dash - this does remove the reflection in the mirror cover some, i've also dimmed the dash lights to see if that helps - though doubtful. @@simonjefferson
