Thank you for sharing. I just discovered when my JLR dealer installed my front undershield for me, they took a shortcut and just used bolts/nuts/washers through plastic to secure the upper two bolts. I’ve got the Aframe and winch so removing the front is quite a bit more work. This looks like a great compromise.

There is more to the key. First there is the 433/315MHz door lock/open by pressing a button mechanism. The key usually is silent and only transmits if the button is pressed. The car detects this signal and locks/unlocks the doors Than we have the presence detection via RF in the moment you press the start/stop button and this operates with more antennaes, 4 or 5, scattered inside the car and trunk. That system is also used if you left your key in the trunk and slam the hatch: it will not lock if the key is present in the car. This presence detection is rather good, 10cm inside/outside of the car makes a difference even though the hatch is only made from plastics. The start/stop button commands the engine control, which in turn asks the NFC under the steering wheel and the RF key presence detectors by sending out an query to the key, the key translates the query using its number, the translated message is sent back, either RF or NFC, and the engine compares if the right translation had been done. So the key contains 3 different wireless systems. That why it is so bulky. I know, that when you leave your car, do not lock it, wait until the electronics shut down which takes some minutes, you hear relay clicking and turn off the instrument cluster and center console, and THAN press the button of the key to lock the car while far away, the key will not work anymore to start the car. If you repeat this some later day, let the unlocked car go to sleep and lock it from far away, it may work again. Somehow the synchronisation is lost.

Hello Simon, I bought a defender carpathian edition from Germany I live in the Middle East and it's very hot in here in the summer and we must have remote start on every car for the cabin preconditioning, After I connected the car app to my phone I was shocked that there is no option for cabin preconditioning in the app after digging about it turns out German imported cars have no remote start up to some law regulations, Is there any way that I can enable that option? I contacted a garage recently and they told me they'll do it for 1500$ which is an insane price for just enabling an option that is already in the car and it is disabled. I have a V8 carpathian edition 2023.

@L663 Hi Simon, touching the sensors is a good way to troubleshoot the sensor problems even before connecting the diagnostic equipment. It can help you find what sensors are not working. With the Defender and newer models either the bumper sensors are working or the wade sensors are working, not both at the same time. The bumper sensors are not detecting water, but when under water water they go into a blocked mode. For example try pressing your finger on a wade sensor when wade is on, it will temporarily go not available, same with a bumper sensor. The system needs a similar height on both sensors so as not to give a false water depth off a bush or something else just on one side of the car. If a car is sloped to the left or the right more than a certain amount then it will display the water depth just from that downhill side. Keep up the good work!

Hi Simon, I’ve recently purchased the Spare Wheel Lock off you for my new 3 week old Defender 90 😁& although I initially had a fitting problem, your after sales help sorted it thank you😁…. I’m now going to purchase this top bumper cover but ….. I wanted to ask you please, do I need to use the silicon? If ever I have or decide to take it off, the silicon looks a nightmare to remove & looks like it will cause permanent damage. If I can get away with just the sticky pads, that would be perfect (need to order the satin finish cover soon as I have already had to wax / polish scuff marks off my gloss black bumper top twice already). Thank you.
