In the early 1990’s, Mario and Luigi were all the rage. The Nintendo video game franchise had become a massive worldwide phenomenon, so it only made sense for Hollywood to try and cash in on it. The Super Mario Bros movie was the first movie based on a video game ever made, and it did not exactly inspire confidence in the genre.
Starring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper and Samantha Mathis, the movie is completely bonkers and raises a whole lot of questions. Like how did dinosaurs also evolve into humans? Why do none of the characters have anything to do with their video game counterparts? Why did they go all-in on the plumbing aspect? Why does President Koopa not just go through the portal? How did they think this would get a SEQUEL?!

"I don't care" pretty much sums up the entirety of the development of this movie.
Exactly, Bob and John said as much. Bob even stayed largely drunk throughout it and John joined in on that, just to tolerate the production.
I just can't believe that the whole abomination went through writing, casting, pre-production, filming, and post-production and nobody stepped up and said "Jesus christ, what the hell are we even doing?"
There were so many stages where this should have failed, and yet it passed all those with no issues.
Ain't that sad?!

The actors said during filming everyone was doing multiple shots. As in, both Mario, Luigi, and the director.

Fact is, that while the movie isn't exactly a good Super Mario movie, it's actually a pretty good dark, gritty, Sci-Fi creature feature set in a dystopian future in it's own right.
I heard they had someone writing an actual Super Mario script but they fired him and brought on these other people who just added some Mario elements to their pre-existing script for an entirely unrelated project.
I loved each “I don’t care” more. They were all SOOOO TRUE!!
To be fair, we were used to hearing Mario with a Brooklyn accent example being “it’s the super Mario brothers super show!”

To be even more fair Mario 64 was three years from being released. To put bluntly, the version of Mario that Ryan's talking about hadn't made his gaming debut yet.

They called the princess daisy because of the super Mario land game on gameboy had a princess daisy instead of the normal princess toadstool

I could feel the frustration trying to explain this movie.
I honestly can't fathom how this was ever approved and most importantly how some people got paid millions to produce this atrocity.
Now's a good time to familiarize yourself with the "sunk cost fallacy" that most of us are prone too. Both so you know how movies like this get made and so you can avoid making similar mistakes yourself.
Summed up by this video perfectly...a cash grab...by people who didn't care. There was clearly a segment of movie people back then who never played a video game in their lives and assumed anyone who did was completely brain dead and would just pay to see any garbage thrown on the screen with their game's title in it.
To be fair most adults at the time did not understand or respect video games or the gaming culture.
I would not be shocked if they thought this movie was similar to what the game was actually like. That and kids have a high tolerance for bad movies. I remember liking the Garbage Pail Kids movie. As an adult I can't even finish 25 minutes of that one.
Having watched a bunch of videos about how this mess of a movie got made, the studio basicly gave the keys to the entire project to a pair of unknown directors that didn't want to make a Mario movie and lied to get the gig.
They wanted to make a cyberpunk sci-fi movie and decided to use the massive budget at their disposal to make their project instead and just slapped mario names on everything.
The studio not being video game fans, didn't really understand what they were making and just went along with it
Same reason there were five (or fifty?) Twilight movies: build-in audience.
You know that part about Daisy’s dad being turned into a fungus and wanting to help was actually sorta taken from the game; to wit, the original Super Mario Bros. had Peach kidnapped because Bowser had taken over the Kingdom and turned all the people who objected into bricks or blocks, the ones Mario can hit, so when they give up a coin or a fire flower it’s them offering something to help on his journey. Source: the original instruction manual.
Writer of Mario Bro’s movie: No I didn’t take mushrooms... That would have messed up my acid trip.

My dad and brother were extras in this movie, so I've seen this many times. I was laughing SO hard during this, because you hit it spot on LOL. My dad was sometimes a double for Mario. Near the end when Mario is loading the bullet for the flying shoes, (wtf is up with those too!) thats my dads hand loading the bullet. My brother is staring straight at the camera after King Kupa is slimmed standing behind Princess Daisy LOL. I loved this and will be sharing this with them!

Sometimes I watch these and I think, "Yes, I imagine that is more or less how that meeting went." This, however, is a masterpiece that could not have done a better job summing up everything involved with the movie in question.

It was an odd movie for sure. It was from 1993 and a lot of it was about what life would be like if Trump was president. King Koopa was styled after him, as were rather a lot of other movie villains. It has a weird amount of depth and prophetic political commentary for a movie which was supposed to be about Mario Bros.
