- Since Alpine unexpectedly lost Fernando Alonso to Aston Martin for 2023 earlier this week, things have got even worse for the team.
It announced reserve driver Oscar Piastri as Alonso’ replacement the following day - but amazingly, Piastri said this isn’t true!
Alonso stunned Alpine by telling his current team he would finalise a new contract with them, while secretly doing a deal to join Aston Martin.
And now Alpine has been shocked again, with Piastri’s attempt to snub his own promotion, amid rumours he is trying to join McLaren.

@@Gl-my8fw He went against a public announcement from his (former) employer, IF the contract is indeed in place (like Alpine has claimed) then he is definitely in the wrong. He technically didn't say anything wrong, but that action is pretty brave. I like it but it might not be good for him.

Alonso didn't "secretly do a deal with AM". According to F1's very own Lawrence Barretto, his sources (Alonso's people) Alonso wanted a multi-year deal with Alpine, Alpine only offered one year to warmed the seat for Oscar Piastri. Alonso feel like with all the things he has done for Alpine, it was an insult that Alpine would only offered him one year. Alonso had his agent going back to Alpine and tell them he want to stay, he loves the mechanics, the team, and he believed they can fight for podiums, Lawrence Barretto said his agent returned and Alpine still only offered him 2023, and nothing beyond, Alonso said he'll think about it, it was 50/50 if he would walked away, he doesn't want to be a seat warmer, and he feel Alpine didn't appreciate what he's done for the team. It was quite for weeks from Alonso as he contemplated leaving F1 according to Lawrence Barretto. It all changed when Vettel decided to retired, he talked with Lawrence Stroll, Vettel recommended Mick Schumacher as first choice, and Alonso has a long shot if, and only if Lawrence Stroll offered him a multi-year deal. AM gave Alonso what he wanted, a team with more money coming, including a new factory and wind tunnel, he's united with some of his old engineers, and AM has been showing pace lately.

The guy has a better pre-F1 record than almost all of the F1 grid and you're acting like he's fighting for scraps at the bottom 😂If he doesn't have a definite seat for 2023; the grid is going to see a few retirements over the next 2/3 seasons and teams definitely want to have drivers contracted in place to take those seats, especially the best rookie in years.
Oh man I'm so going to miss Alonso when he does leave F1, He is by far the most entertaining personality in F1, no one else seems to be at the centre of so many of the best bits in F1.

He just likes to be centre of attention. He knew what he was doing by announcing on August 1st. It's the reason why Alonso only has two titles, he acts like a child, which gets him likes from the kids, but leaves him with only two titles due to burning bridges everywhere he goes.
I can definitely imagine Max becoming like at some point, after winning a few championships. Depends on whether his relationship with RB ever sours.

I love how a week ago Piastri didn't have a seat, and Alpines first option was Alonso. So the natural thing to do for him is to chase down a seat himself. As all of you have been saying for months. Then Alonso leaves Alpine, and suddenly Piastri is bad for chasing down a seat, that he never had 2 days ago.

Piastri won Formula Renault in 2019, F3 in 2020 and F2 in 2021 - the fact they didn't give him a seat was absurd and anyone in his position would try to find another team if given the opportunity.

If DR stays at McLaren, 2023 will likely be his last season in F1. Assuming the car design is the issue for him, McLaren won’t be changing it at the expense of Lando so DR currency will burn out. He would be lucky to get a drive at Williams if he stays. BUT if he leaves now he could potentially get a 2 year contract elsewhere, reset his career and stay longer in the sport. Dare I say it, if he went back to Alpine, he would likely be very competitive against Lando in 2023. If he stays the evidence says he will be even further behind Lando than he already is. Just a thought.
He is just catching up to Lando after the McLaren updates and would have finished 8th if it wasn't for poor strategy at McLaren
I don’t think he will get the alpine seat and if he does this is a mclaren masterclass they get a new driver to help them try and beat alpine in their midfield battle and alpine gain DR the driver who is underperforming and making mclaren losing the battle

Let's be honest McLaren's car is not good and then you have the steering preferences of Lando vs Daniel so it could very well be 100% a car problem and if that is the case Alpine would be getting a proven driver over an unknown. Piastri is good no question but F1 is a new arena for him. Also it looks like Piastri is as good as gone so the question becomes: can Alpine do better than RIC?

DR might end up at Williams to save his career but is it worth it for alpine to take a risk on him based on how he has proved that he struggles to adapt
Daniel is good but he is no longer a top driver and if he tries to get a big money contract he will likely be unsuccessful
I believe Alpine did have a contract option on Piastri but they had to exercise it by the end of July which they obviously did not do , so as of Aug 1st Piastri was free to negotiate with other teams, it would not surprise me if Alonso and Piastri have had discussions between themselves to orchestrate this with the timing of Alonso leaving Alpine after the end of July cut off date for Piastri which gave him an exit out of Alpine because if he announced it 2 days earlier Piastri would have had to stay if they exercised their option on him, well played gentlemen

Regardless of what this means for Alpine and Piastri, I'm pretty sure that a public announcement like that being published without an unequivocal contract or at the very least the clear consent of the person in question, is quite a red flag that something shady or unethical is going down behind the curtains.
I just think they rushed to confirm a driver to save face and use the announcement to force piastri's hand if he had a choice to leave.
I think alpine unilaterally announced it because they had to meet some deadline.
It was already a shitshow before the Alpine tweet. This is just legal ground for the coming case

I dont think so, if he was contracted, than thats it. If someone on a basketball team had been riding the bench all year, and the team decided to put them in, they dont need to ask him first. He's already there, he works for them and thats what the contract says he has to do. Surely he didnt think they were spending all this time and money on him getting him ready for McLaren lol.

My suspicion is that Alpine let him shop around thinking they didn't need him. When they did need him they tried to keep him in the same deal. McLaren has plenty to offer given how much they save on Oscar vs Daniel. Given how long he's had to wait in the wings at Alpine it woulda been pretty offensive to be allowed to see what everyone else is offering only for your team to shaft you....Just my option but regardless, Alpine dropped all the bags this week.
I bet Ferrari is enjoying flying under the radar tho.

i started following f1 only because of daniel. i saw him make a mistake by leaving red bull and then again with renault. But now i think he should leave mclaren if he can score a seat with a team whose car suits him. its been brutal to watch him on race weeks

Why would Piastri risk not having a seat at all though? Most junior drivers would jump at the chance of an F1 drive with any team.

More accurate resources than The Race (Oscar Piastri's management) claim that Alpine had an option on Piastri but it expired on the 1st August 2022. If that's true, it makes it look like Alpine has gone into panic mode because of Alonso's surprise announcement and they've overlooked the fact that their option on Piastri had expired.

It's sources, not resources, and since Piastri's management would be biased and have an agenda, I'm not sure that's fair to assume they are putting forth a more accurate portrayal of the situation than the journalists at The Race.
I knew signing Ocon for so long was going to screw over Alpine. Between Ocon and Alonso, I’d choose Alonso any day of the week and replace Ocon with Piastri
Yeah never got that. He always costs race time and position by fighting teammates too aggressively. Yet guve him a 3yr deal cause he got lucky winning a race? I was never an ocon fan he shows glimpses of speed but never of thought. Like taking out max by trying to unlap himself just dumb. Fighting alonso in Saudi slowing himself down so much bottas went rught by. Also the team not stepping in 4ever is another reason Alonsos leaving.

I love how it went from there is not enough seats in f1 to there is too many seats in f1 with just one driver leaving and another moving teams. Imagine if Piastri didnt have anything lined up and lost out on a seat doing this. Yes alpine messed up but i dont think they are the main problem here. They are right in that they have invested a lot into Piastri and expected him to return favor. I dont understand why he doesnt want that seat though, there is probably something very bad happening at alpine internally. Because from an outsider point of view its definitely not a bad team for an unproven rookie.
I'd argue that winning two junior championships as a rookie in both makes him a little more than "unproven". And maybe it was rash from Alpine to not even tell him about the seat before announcing it publicly
@@juanin200 yeah definitely alpine messed up, i think they got pretty desperate but that doesnt excuse them. Maybe saying he is unproven was a bit too much, but he is still a rookie. Everything points to him being exceptionally fast, but its not certain.
I'd assume like you Alpine just hast some internal problems for this to unfold in such a messy public way. I also kinda understand why he might be miffed at Alpine. He has a stellar junior career only to spend 2 years on the bench all while they signed Ocon to a 4 year deal. Then has to also has to wait out Alonso. Tell him he's going to Williams on loan all so they can keep him under contract, and keep him playing the waiting game. I Don't fault him for shopping around, I fault Alpine for not locking him down prior to talks with Alonso.
My suspicion is that they weren't willing to up his pay or contract length even after letting him window shop at McLaren who could have offered both.
No one likes Ocon as their partner. He is trouble. Alonso jumping ship at the first opportunity also says a lot.
He returned favour by winning three formula championships in a row in his rookie year. They stuffed up by not getting him an F1 seat this year and making him sit on the sidelines. That’s ridiculous for a kid with his talent.

It would be very sad if Piastri burnt his bridges by trusting legal advice from Webber.
You don't think Piastri has his own lawyers and any other team s lawyers interested in signing him haven't gone through the contract?
@@Midori_Ringo That would be the responsibility of the manager to arrange, i.e Webber. Do you think junior drivers got their own lawyers on call and drafts their own contracts? That's quite literally why they have managers.
@@RichardTheRoe Managers still consult lawyers though... Just like lawyers consult fellow lawyers. Literally no one has a complete knowledge of the law and all its ifs and buts. Same goes for the Alpine advisors.
A manager is only a "representative". It's literally like you parents "representing" your choices, but with the emotional bias missing and more knowledge of how the environment works (in this case Webber's experience with F1). The manager is mainly your representative because he/she has the connections in place that you yourself don't have (you being Piastri).

I'd blame Alpine group CEO for this mess.
For a very long time, there have been very public reports of his ego and will souring relations with key personnel within Alpine- the greatest of them being Alain Prost.

In Australia there's basically a law that states any contract with a French company can be exited at any time for any reason.
The whole thing is just a mess, and McLaren's Indycar situation has to be factored into this.
What's weird is that McLaren basically got most of Indycars top drivers signed up, and lined up to be Ricciardo's replacement. That's one of the reasons these drivers signed with McLaren in the first place. Now suddenly Piastri would surpass all of them. Now I'm waiting for Raikkonen and Mansell to come out of retirement, and make even a bigger mess out of this silly season. Some nice off track drama to keep us entertained during the summer break.

2:55 there’s just zero way you can say this with any real conviction. They don’t dictate his driving in perpetuity. The prototypical driver protection would be a deadline that a team just take action by. That is one very real scenario and we’ve seen overnight (literally) deals happen to not violate tampering clauses. The first Monday of August and the summer break sure seems on paper like an appropriate deadline . One is left to wonder: had they fulfilled the contractual specifics about whatever constitutes engaging Oscar appropriately to secure his services, why are we here? It’s going to come down to those specifics. What defines a reasonable attempt to secure him? How airtight is the language that governs his ability to communicate with other teams? Were they consumed with Alonso conversations & failed to come to terms, however the contract defines that, in time? I highly doubt Oscar wouldn’t have known this date as he likely was staring at his phone as it ticked down.
Facts, it wouldn't surprise me at all considering the awkward situation with Alonso. He is performing much better than they predicted and wants a multi-year deal, so cold feet. They couldn't be decisive when it mattered most, and now they are going to lose short and long term (major) talents.
I suspect Alpine had until 31 July to engage Piastri. So, either by design or by happenstance, Alonso's announcement on 1 August and Apline and/or Piastri dragging their feet has resulted in a massive F-up for Alpine.
I find it interesting to think that Alonso may have colluded with Piastri to engineer this situation.

From what I recall Piastri has been left sitting unused for far too long after being snapped up by F1, I'm sure he didn't sign up just to sit in the pits and watch others race on the TV. So good luck to him is what I say.

@@ultrascreens5206 good car, far from a good team, chaos management, employees leaving, no sense of planning, tonnes of on track mistakes. They should've been clear ahead of Mclaren, considering they have better facilities and only one driver to beat but look where they are.
On marketing, their genius idea was to get Ocon instead of Pierre who's doing same mistakes as racing point days.

Why is no one thinking about Williams? They want him and he was set to go there for 2023 season. Maybe he has an offer on the table from Williams as an independent driver and not a loan from Alpine. If that's the case, maybe he's thinking of building his rookie career with Williams and then switch to Mercedes to replace Hamilton when he retires.
Yes, I've heard both Mercedes and RB are keen on him too, and are surprised how Alpine have left him hanging. So the Williams Merc link might be spot on as well.
However if you had the opportunity to driver with the best of the rest teams (Mclaren and Alpine) or a backmarker like Williams, which would you choose. To me Alpine is a better option as most cars on the grid handle similiarly to the Alpine as compared to the Mclaren which are much different according to Ricciardo and Sainz

Seems to me like piastri is being far too aggressive in one of the hardest sports on the planet to be apart of, as the video mentioned if he doesn’t play his cards absolutely perfectly he could end up with no seat at all in F1 for the foreseeable future or even in F1 at all

Unless McLaren intend to honor Riccardo's remaining year on his contract but Piastri comes in as reserve driver and replaces him in 24? While he may prefer to be drivign for McLaren in 2023, a further one year wait may be preferable to a multi-year commitment to Alpine. And of course there is always the possibility that Riccardo decides to leave a year early once he knows he's not part of their long term future
Also a possibility that Mclaren were able to arrange a definite Williams drive for Piastri for 23 and then they have him for 24+ with no need to pay out Ricciardo.

Alpine in probably the 4th best team atm and they have their own engine as well I don't know why anyone would want to go to McLaren or Aston instead of alpine. Unless of course he is eyeing for a mercedes seat in the long run

The reality with the current regulations is that Mercedes provides a solid power unit, also McLaren and Aston Martin can pump enough money to provide their very own car concepts. For the long run I have at least more trust in McLaren crafting a decent car than Alpine.
Lets not forget that Renault also tends to deal with PU issues, so even a decent chassis could affect the reliability.
Historically Renault is also one of the factory teams that tends to invest less money.

I think Brown’s public statements about Ricciardo were meant to let Ricciardo know he’s no longer wanted at Mclaren and the confidence in him is no longer there. This plays into Mclaren to press him to exit out of his contract. I haven’t seen a team principal at least in my times come out in public and say such things about his driver. Piastri is about to see if his gamble is going to play out.
Ricciardo definitely hasn't made progress in coming to grips with a McLaren car. After getting significantly outpointed by Norris in 2021, this year he is 3 points behind Magnussen and seems to be stuck on finishing 12th or worse. At some point, McLaren has to cut bait with him and move on.
Do we know if there's any performance clauses in his contract that would allow them to release him?

@@Dashriprock4 The only exit clause is written in Ricciardo's favour. The only way for Mclaren to get rid of him is to pay him out which would cost them about 25 million+. Not out of the question but expensive.

Why would you not go to Alpine? Alpine is literally the king of mid field right now. Unless they gave Piastri a terrible contract, there is no reason for Piastri to not go to Alpine

The real issue stems back to Alpine offering Ocon a long contract out of the blue. At the point last year he wasn’t performing exceptionally well then out of the blue he gets that contract. He’s not a star driver in high demand so why did alpine lock him in for so long?
100 % I was just saying this to my wife, you only offer second rate drivers 1-2 years max contracts. This is all a result of poor management from alpine.
Red Bull ditched Renault as PU supplier. Ricciardo joined the team, saw the team up close (how it works, what's in the pipeline, etc) and bailed. Alonso joined the team, saw the team up close and bailed. Piastri joined the team, saw the team up close and bailed. That tells us everything we need to know about Renault/Alpine. The current form (an inconsistent midfield team) is as good as they are going to get.
Renault won two championships with Alonso. After he left Renault, he never wins...
Things have been way too civilised this season, we needed some drama. Also fitting that Alpine & McLaren are in an exclusively 2 way fight for P4 in the constructors.
They WERE fighting for P4 in the CC, if Daniel has to ride out the season in the dodgy McLaren, knowing that they shafted him, I think Alpine is a good bet for the position, lol.
If Danny is able to negotiate with Alpine and get back into a car he had had success with, this could be the absolute best thing for his career right now. Daniel and Piastri swap seats and everybody is happy, Alpine save face and potentially help revive Daniels career getting a top tier driver as a result and McLaren get their driver of the future. Would love to see this as i’m sure all us Danny Ric fans would.

Lots of questions to ponder over the summer:
? Why are drivers rejecting Alpine (which is effectively a well funded works F1 team)
? Why is everyone falling over themselves to join McLaren ( don't forget the Indycar guys - Herta, Rosenqvist, Palou, O'Ward are all sniffing round)
? Why did Alpine make this hasty statement
? Why did Piastri feel the need to embarrass them in public (it is never good to embarrass a potential employer - just ask Fernando Alonso)
? What on Earth does Alonso think he will get from 2 (or 3) seasons at Aston Martin
? What does Aston Martin think they will get from hiring a 41 year old driver rather than one half his age
? Why does anyone feel the need to make a contract longer than 1 season. If the team and driver is successful they will want to stay together; if they are not at least one will want to end the relationship. A contract just gets in the way of this natural course of events.
Don't forget why are experienced drivers (Alonso & Riccardo) basically running away from alpine ?
Sainz once said in the Beyond the Grid podcast that a multiyear contract truly helps a driver in a mental way, he says it truly helped him perform at McLaren in 2019.

Gasly possibly will stay, and Ricciardo will go to Alpine as Piastri will move to McLaren. If not, the other possibility would be that Alpine wanted to have two French drivers which left Ricciardo without a seat.
As we currently have seen, McLaren is basically planning to be running 5 cars in F1, 7 in IndyCar, and maybe 3 in Formula-E.
Just have to say great video. This is the first coverage of this situation that I have seen go into all the details and expell the rumours that so many different people have been clinging onto and trying to substantiate with not much basis.

Ricciardo, Piastri, and Webber are all fellow Australians. I very much doubt that they would do a deal behind Ricciardo's back, that's not Webber's style. So, if something has been lined up at McLaren, it seems more likely that Ricciardo is in agreement with it.
Certainly seems surprising for Piastri to make such a definitive statement. Time will tell, I guess.
Piastri could try to solve the issue in private. He and Weber are so confident that they became persona non grata with the Renault Group. Alpine should avoid having Piastri in their team, because that would create a even worse image. It was public humiliation.
Piastri/Weber also complicated the situation for McLaren. It is like announcing that McLaren is going to pay the contract penalty and fire Ricciardo.
Alonso must really hate Renault by the way. Now there are two available spots: (1) Williams and (2) Alpine.
Alpine is the one not making it private in the first place.

Renault Group is very influential in access categories. Weber is now a manager for young talents. They can make Weber’s life difficult in the future.
And Weber is a very close friend of Alonso’s. So I think it was orchestrated.
Love Alonso but he must need the cash as AM can’t even get out of Q1! And now possibly Piastri is acting the fool, I’d gladly take a seat at Alpine, esp if never turned a wheel in F1 and it’s not like there are better options for next year

Oscar either has a definite deal, perhaps McLaren, which Ricciardo doesn't know about, and will be forced to accept a payout, or Oscar is extremely naive in binning off Alpine. Why would he say that he categorically won';t be driving for them next year otherwise?
He could have left the Alpine door open with a more tame comment, just saying nothing was "set in stone" yet, perhaps.
...whatever has happened between Alpine and their drivers, 2 out of 3, along with 2 senior advisors and a manager, have walked out in the past 12 months. Even a budding talent does not want to drive for them... That is terrible PR and indicates an alarming level of chaos in the team.

I don't see why it has to be McLaren that is involved. From Piastri's perspective, Alonso was almost a dead set for the Alpine seat and thus he could have been talking to any team in order to get a seat on the grid next year. He could well have signed with Williams. I don't see why it has to be a better team in order for Piastri's reaction to make sense - because if he is contractually obligated to a team like Williams, he would say that he would not be driving for Alpine next year.
An alternative theory...bear with me here.....its not DR who might leave McLaren - its LN. Why? Perhaps Lewis Hamilton is stepping down from racing, Mercedes want LN and that provides an empty seat at McLaren of Piastri. It could happen - but doesn't answer who will drive at Alpine in the 2nd car.....
Hamilton is not retiring until he gets that 8th title. Mark my words. And it might actually happen next year.

It might be a bit embaresing for Alpine but it is not a big deal for them. I don't think they will struggle to find a good driver willing to drive their car.
Piastri at the other end is walking on very thin ice. Unless he really has a signed contract with McLaren. But if it is Williams he has signed for or he looses out on a seat all together this might damage his career considerably compared to driving for Alpine next year.
I disagree. IF it is true that Alpine let the July 31st deadline to keep Piastri pass, Oscar is under no obligation to stay. At least from outside, to me it seems like Alpine didn't value enough both Alonso or Piastri to give them multi-year contracts. As the old saying goes: "If you pay peanuts, all you get is monkeys". When McLaren got Ricciardo, they offered him a 3yr contract. Offering Fernando only a 1yr deal is a joke.

As far as we know, Alpine lost their contract the day before Alonso resigned. Alonso resigned only after Piastri was no longer locked in. Alonso was in on this with Webber (Piastri's manager) and made sure that he quit after Alpine couldn't keep Piastri. Alpine had a guarantee on Piastri until August 1st, the day Alonso quit. I can't imagine Webber didn't know Piastri's contract, and Alpine wouldn't make the announcement without Piastri's confirmation unless they thought they needed to pressure Piastri into accepting. The fact is, Alpine making that announcement might have been enough for Oscar to say he didn't want to race for Alpine. Ocon is a shitty teammate, and Alpine has lost so many top drivers lately that there's clearly an issue with their culture. Why else would Alonso resign from a top 4 team to go to a team that might not even break into the top 5 before he retires? Alpine has serious problems.
Everyone thinks Daniel is leaving McLaren, but what if it's Norris? What if one of the top teams wants Norris and has a way to make space? Everyone might be looking at the wrong McLaren seat. Norris might have an option to leave, or a richer team might just pay McLaren out for his contract to secure him. Mercedes? Redbull seems set. Ferrari? Maybe Sainz isn't going good enough to keep his contract. Wouldn't be the first time a top team driver gets dropped at the 11th hour.
My personal theory is that Stroll is finally losing his seat because his dad wants to actually start winning. And Piastri is going with Alonso (Alonso and Webber are good friends and have been for years) to Aston Martin. Aston Martin might not only be getting the Veteran, but the up and comer in one deal. Suddenly, Alonso might not be leaving Alpine when they're looking stronger as a gamble for a longer contract, but because he sees a chance to build the next F1 World Champion in Piastri. Maybe his legacy isn't getting a third title years later, but seeing another driver exceed his own achievements.

The big bit of leverage Piastri has in this is his proven ability. The way he carved through the junior categories to get to F1 makes him a very desirable driver and he knows it. From his management's perspective they likely think it's worth weathering a potential legal dispute because they know any team in reality would want him, and with at least three likely open seats this year, the worst he can do is Williams.
