As an ex Jehovah's witnesses, the first time I read this it broke me. When the man was told to go tell what God did, but he went and told what Jesus did.....that was a biggie for me in leaving behind that watchtower teaching. Pray for me . I'm the only one in my family that's out.

I know this was difficult for you. I know also that you had the courage to touch on such a difficult and painful subject, and that you felt you had to. And i know based on your postures, etc that it was from your heart. I dont know if you got my email, but i want you to know i was shaking and crying from the relief of your touching on a subject so near to me. And you brought me hope. I love Jesus. I long to see him. And i know if He hadnt allowed this (bipolar) to happen to me (thorn in my flesh and my brain indeed), I would never have been able to do any of the good He worked through me, wretched and filthy that I am. I often read this passage, sometimes over and over and over. I had to believe there was a reason and a hope, and i am so glad you shared the facts you did. Thank you again and again. I believe when i die, i will finally be able to meet with Him, and in that moment, the monsters in my head will never hurt me or anyone else ever again. It is what i live for. Thank you so much for the courage to teach on what so many have avoided like the plague. I have hope.

I do believe it was demonic, I had so many intrusive thoughts of self harm and suicide until I was saved and delivered from everything! It's been three years now and I have yet to have any suicidal thoughts or self harm in any way. Praise God!

I've experienced something like demonic possession.
Early 2016, De Anza Community College, Cupertino California.
Sitting in the back of the class on the first day of the quarter at community college.
For no reason I get extremely angry at a guy sitting at the front of the class.
I focus my eyes on him and start thinking evil thoughts.
Then I felt something leave my body and fly at him.
His body reacted with a jolt, as if he was hit by it.
When it left me, I felt it in my skin on the entire front side of my body from head to feet.
I could sense the direction that it left me.
After it hit him, after his body physically reacted to it, he then turned around and looked straight at me with a very shocked look on his face, he saw me looking right at him, then he looked down and then back up at the professor in the front of the class who was continuing to speak the whole time this was happening.
I should add that around the same time of this incident I had a lucid dream of a very large, pitch black demon, and I remember banishing it, and the emotions that I experienced in the dream were very disturbing, and it also made me move really slow when I came close to it in the dream.
At the time that all of this was happening I was not a Christian but I knew about Jesus and the bible, but I chose to start following the new age instead, learning more about Hinduism and shamanism.
After this stuff happened I got back into researching Christianity, also with the help of a good friend of mine who is a Christian.
    Now I'm a Christian.
Hope this doesn't fall on deaf ears.
    God bless.

Isiah Salvidar has a fantastic ministry on demons & deliverance. I just wonder if it’s Biblical, with Jesus, the apostles, and even followers that were not in the group with the apostles, casting out MANY demons, where do modern Christians think they have gone? We talk & pray for healing but where is deliverance? Few and far between I’m afraid.

As someone who used to "cut" I can explain it like this (at least in my case). 1. You suddenly have this thought in your head and think: I want to feel pain on my body and not my emotions anymore 2. If you dont believe how much pain I feel inside: here it is for you since we only trust physical pain (absurd cos then u usually hide the cuts 3. I deserve this pain from the cut 4. I MUST purge. 5. The pain brings some sort of rush which calms you. I would not at ALL be surprised if cutting was Biblically demonic. Not at all.

I’ve always believed that when people try to pray to departed saints, that they are actually contacting demons in disguise as saints. If Satan can appear in the light of God, then this is surely possible. Christ is our mediator to the father, but when we contact saints, we become the medium.

It also seems to me that there is a symbolic nature to this event:
Swine are an unclean animal and only a few verses earlier Christ seems to equate swine with people who don’t understand and are angered by His truth (Mat 7:6). Thus, it is reasonable to say that swine may represent the unsaved who prefer to wallow in sin rather than turn to Christ. Christs response to the legion’s question “have you come to torment us before the time?”, suggests that it is His will to allow the demons to remain in this world until His second coming. If you accept these two premises then it seems logical to conclude that those who love sin and choose to reject Christ, in-so-doing, open themselves to demons and those who choose their own demons over Christ will earn death in the final judgement. Thus, while the demons may have believed that they were causing havoc by killing the swine, they may also have been acting out a symbolic version of what will happen to those who choose to reject Christ.
Just a thought. As always- Great video Mike!

Thank you Br. Mark for taking on this passage of scripture! For those who argue that town was 30 miles away, have never been to a pig farm or any farm that has a pig for that matter. They stink! 2000 of them in a herd would make the city dump smell like the botanical gardens by comparison! Just for fun, I did some quick number crunching and based on a goal weight of 280lbs (at time for slaughter in the US) and the current price per lb (according to the USDA), the farmers would have lost between $840k and $2.1 million at market, if this incident had happened today.

The Sea of Galilee (The Kinneret for Jews in Israel) is amazing. I was there in 2017 on a volunteer archaeological dig in partnership with the University of Haifa. The dig was, and still is, called the Kursi Beach Project; though the actual Kursi (derived from Gergesa) sits perched on the hill top. The beach site was also a Byzantine location but more or less it's port. Its very fascinating to be there and look up at the hills which are enormous with sharp like precipices, or escarpments, and see how it ties in with the story that took place. You can also take into account the sea levels must have been slightly different as well, but not too high, as some of these ancient towns, that still remain, would still need to of course exist rather than flooded with an exaggerated water level. The pigs must have stumbled down each narrow wadi or escarpment on their way down the hillside, but would meet the narrow stretch of flat land between the hill and the shores. I think a lot of us immediately picture a cliff and just a drop, but this is not the case when you see it.

I always wondered why demons had such different characteristics from angels.
Angels never posse anyone from scripture, but demons seem to be doing this all the time. Also, angels seem to be WAY more powerful than a demon. There are a lot of moments in scripture that display the power of these angelic beings.

Paul Kennedy I agree. I wonder if this is, in part, why fasting and prayer drives them out. If, by fasting and glorifying God, we make our flesh a very uncomfortable and undesirable place to dwell, they’re compelled to flee. Not to give people too much credit, this may be off base. God can cause any to flee with a word.

One thing I noticed from when Jesus told the man "Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.": I think this is another indication that the man was a Gentile. He was identifying not only Himself as God, but also the supreme, omnipotent, true God of the Jews as the One Who had healed him. His message was explicitly anti-pluralist, and yet gentle and compassionate in its declaration of the Word. Praise God!

I have never noticed that small detail about before, but it dovetails perfectly with the idea of the indwelling Holy Spirit being given to the saved man. Perhaps you could call it a theological undesigned coincidence if you like. :) That one is going in my journaling Bible (where I write all the most important observations about the text) for sure.

Mike, enjoy your teaching. Best on the planet! Why did the pigs run down the embankment and drown? I simply believe they did it by choice. Demons had no idea they would do that; they wanted a host, but the unclean pigs reasoned death a better state than possession. Upon the pigs death, they were sent to the abyss. Demons never have requests answered in the affirmative with Jesus except here. Why? Jesus knew what they would do. They couldn't get over the cliff fast enough. Keep up the good Biblical teaching. I do pray for you often.

Great series. With regards to the apologetic, I didn't think it was that complicated.
Girgesa on the shore is the likely locale but is a tiny village, little known.
Gadara was a larger city in the region and the authors writing to a more distant audience would have referenced the region as Gadarenes because of this.
Gerasa was the most prominent city in the area and again it is argued both Gadara and Giresa would have been within its regional boundaries.
Gerasenes would have made sense to knowledgeable more distant readers. Gadarenes in a similar way.
The other explanations didn't really make much sense to me. Loving the series though, working my way through, lockdown giving me plenty of time to focus.

When it comes to screaming and cutting himself.
You could say hes trying to scream back his own soul. The, soul is the part thats unique for you, and different from the Spirit.
The cutting is somehow trying to letting out the sick heat/the demons.
So the cutting, screaming is not in its self satanic, but the symptom of trying to deal with the problem already harboering within.
So cutting. Release the intruders. And screaming reconnect to the original self 👍👍

  • @FDroid01
    @FDroid01 Před rokem

    Hi Mike!
A couple thoughts because I love your studies and I've been fascinated with this miracle today.
-Hellenistic villages used scapegoating exorcism practices. They'd have a priest deal with a strongman/principality and plead him to mobe his demons the many villagers into one individual so the rest could be more productive. That's why this man had so many and did what he did. It's also why territory was such a big deal, from the storm on the sea to the cleansed demoniac not being allowed to leave the Decapolis with Jesus.
-Demons do lie to people, but they don't maintain a lie when under God's authority. If you've ever bound some and think one is lying, just ask it "Will that stand as the truth before Jehovah God?" It'll say yes or it'll beat around the bush until it tells the truth.
-Demons come and go through open doors in our temple. Those open doors are sins, especially idolatry and unforgiveness. There's also the generational rules that still apply in this generation (meaning the sins of the father are the sins of the son, cursed for several generations, blessed for thousands, etc.). You grant permission for demons to take lease in your temple by sin. If they are leasing or squatting, that doesn't mean they're imprisoned. They're tenants, squatters. They go and look for their buddies sometimes or to receive instructions or to work on other assignments. At those times you're not under the influence, so you have good times and can rest and clean up your temple. But if you still have sin, and still haven't kicked those demons out, then they can come back in with their friends BECAUSE THEY'RE ALLOWED TO BY YOUR SIN and you haven't changed the locks.
-You CAN be a Christian and have a demon. But with Jesus' authority, we can cast them out from each other with relative ease, and even ourselves if we are disciplined. Deliverance is the children's bread!
-You are right about possession, and the distinction between possession and oppression! But, possession is a lie. We are created in God's image, not Caesar's or Satan's. We cannot sell what God has built, or what God has bought with His very Blood!
-Would medication have helped the demoniac? Yeah, a little bit. Just a little bit. That's why psychiatrists consider schizophrenia terminal but still prescribe powerful tranquilizers and sedatives for treatment. There's a little bit of relief from the one set of symptoms (the voices and compulsions) in exchange for a lot of physical symptoms but a quieting of the voices.
-Exorcism IS a religious term! It's usually got to do with moving demons around, while Jesus ACTUALLY delivered people and CAST those demons OUT of circulation!! In those times, there were no Catholic exorcists, but there were Kabbalistic and Hellenistic and tribal and Hindu exorcists. But in these times, we have The Resurrected Son of God, Who gives us His authority to minister FREEDOM, not barter and lousy satanic contracts.
-We know about fallen angels, and we know about nephilim. I personally think that the principalities of the sky are fallen angels, and that the spirits we cast out of people are mostly seeds of the nephilim (with a fallen angel seed here and there). I'm not too attached to this theory, but I think both races are still here today.
Love your ministry, Mike, so I wanted to share what I've learned! Demonic influence has had a big impact on my family (But God's influence is Greater!) so I've got a studious interest in that side of creation. Keep it up!

What’s interesting to me is this: once Jesus cast out the demons, this man was restored immediately to sanity. He wanted to be with Jesus, but Jesus told him to go and spread the good news of his deliverance. I believe that deliverance is for today, but only discernment from the Holy Spirit will tell us who needs it. In my opinion, some people with mental illness do need deliverance, while others have a biological issue. For those with biological issues, we should be saying prayers for healing. They should also get emotional support from other Christians. The rest is up to our Lord.

Just a fun fact, A7X is a modern and very popular metal band. A7X stands for "Avenged Seven Fold" which I believe is a refrence to the bible verse about a cast out demon returning to the body it had previously possessed with 7x more demons. One of their most famous songs is called "Hail to the king". I'll give you one guess as to who their king is. Another song of theirs is called "God hates us".

This proves Jesus is God manifested in the flesh Isaiah 9:6-7. This also proves that fallen angels and/or demons are not omniscient - or else they would have known that being cast into the pigs would have caused their demise. God knew this though. Jesus just proved to his apostles and everyone in that town that he truly is God on earth as The Son of Man. Great video!

I hope this isn't too off topic from this video, but since it is on the topic of demons, I have a couple questions, one primary question. Can satan and/or demons speak thoughts into our mind? If so, how can I tell what is from them, and what garbage thoughts come from my own wicked nature? Thank you for clarity on this issue.

Yes they can. Demon possession was so prevalent in the NT, yet pastors rarely address it and act like it’s non existent or rare. But in the Bible it was common, even people not following the apostles were casting out in Jesus name. Jesus told them not to stop them, if they aren’t against us they are for us.

The true meaning of this event is this: Pigs are an obvious enough indication of Gentiles, swine being the most unclean of foods to Jews, and this raises the question of a political meaning. When the language is understood, it is seen by the pesherist that this is a record of a turning point in the gospel period. 'Legion' was Theudas-Barabbas, the Chief Therapeute, whose order of Therapeuts who lived in Egypt but whose elders & married members had a center in Rome, so living in both the 'TOMBS' ( the Egyptian pyramids) & the 'MOUNTAINS' ( the 7 hills of Rome). Therapeuts held communal meals. These ecstatic communal meals lasting all night, are described by Philo and account for the image of frenzy. Even when they lived in Rome, they could be zealot, having 'demons'. But in this year, 31AD, that of Agrippa's change of allegiance, Theudas was also changing to Sadducee views, less hostile to Rome, & the spirits of zealotry went into other members of his mission, those led by a man called the 'Two Thousand', a title with similar meaning to the 'Five Thousand'.

I use this when someone says that demons can possess Christens.
Can a Demon force God to leave His Temple, "For do you not know that God bought you with a price and your body is not you own, but His Temple." Can a demon chase God form the temple which HE bought with the blood of Jesus and indwells? No he can not, for if a demon could then force Him, then God would not be God, and sent God is God no demon can force God out.

How awesome and sovereign is the living God?!? In possessions, where earthly men attempt exorcisms. The unclean spirits resist expulsion so fiercely and violently. Threatening, refusing and even injuring the vessel and the exorcist. But, in the case of Christ. The unclean spirits literally approach Him, begging for mercy, and immediately acknowledging that their going to have a really bad day, and that they have no hope in resistance.

Does the Holy Spirit dwell in me?
    How can I tell?
I can tell by the fruit of His presence (Gal 5:22)
    LOVE - Can I love people I don't like?
    JOY - Am I a happy Christian?
PEACE - Am I poised and serene?
    LONGSUFFERING - am I free from self-pity?
KINDNESS - "I was hungry and you gave me meat. . . '
GOODNESS - My seviour went about doing good. Do I?
FAITHFULNESS - If He slew me, would I still trust Him?
MEEKNESS - Am I so crass that I confuse meekness with weakness?
TEMPERANCE - Am I temperate in all things?
I am shocked, Lord Jesus, to find how engrossed I have been with myself. I look back over the years and it has been mostly self, self, self.
I want to die to self: to my opinions and preferences, tastes and will. I want to die to the world, its approval and blame, and die even to the approval and blame of my brethren and my friends.
I would study to show myself approved unto Thee.....

it's not a blood sacrifice to satan or anyone else. i think that cutting is a manifestation of severe mental and/or emotional distress and/or mental illness. there's probably various reasons why people cut themselves. i've heard that one of the reasons people cut themselves is to distract themselves from their emotional or mental pain by inflicting physical pain because to them physical pain is more bearable than emotional or mental pain. it's sad.

The man actually never would directly answer me "yes" or "no" when I asked him, "You have never sinned since believing in Jesus?" Another Christian I'm acquaintances with said there was a movement of this kind some 30 years ago, but its dwindled. Pastor Mike, I struggle with what you said about not thinking the end of the story is bad. However, the end of this story, our world is bad and only the return of Jesus or our own deaths seem to be what our hope is in. Revelation and what Jesus says in Matthew indicates everything is supposed to get unbearably bad. So, until death or Jesus remakes Heaven and Earth, I have no hope a lot of times that problems in our world can ever get better. How do you deal with this?

  • @Ian-ve9xc

    Mark 5 verse 5 to 6
5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.
6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,
He ran and worshipped him!!! Not the sign of an atheist.
I think the man was full of unrepentant sin and exposed himself through demonic worship or worshipping the local gods. He ran to worship Jesus which is exactly what I would do.
I think the easiest solution is to go after the demonic if you have discernment. There are ministries that deal with the demonic. The major defense of demons is deception. They survive and thrive in deception. Its painless going after the demons. Its quick you get improvement in minutes or hours.

Pretty easy to understand that this was the region of the city, not the city itself. The man did not live in the city, he lived among the tombs. Also, I live in a small town. People identify this whole area by the name of a city that they have heard of. No one would have a clue where my town was located, but when they say the name of this other city, they have a general idea. The city is over 60 miles away, but many say near there.

How did the demonized man (or men, Matthew 8:28), support himself (themselves)? The descriptions of screaming, self cutting, nakedness, and isolation (not only living in the tombs, instead of a house, but, according to Matthew 8:28, also in the mountains), and extreme "difficultness" (perhaps "savagery"), such that no one was even able to pass through that road (Matthew 8:28), make it extremely unlikely that he (or they) either worked to support himself (themselves) or was (were) supported by charity! Is it unreasonable to infer that he (they) lived not only in, but from the contents of, those tombs (in other words, eating funerary food offerings--or even the corpses)?

  • @mackdmara
    @mackdmara Před 4 lety

I like how in-depth you go pastor Mike. I always get something out of these. God Bless your ministry.
Of course, I still have a worry (hence the comment). I don't know about this idea that believers are safe from demons. Biblically, it seems like a sickness. You have a cure, but that does not imply you won't get a cold.
A great example is this passage. Look at what Jesus is doing here. He is working with this guy for awhile. There is an untold back & forth between Christ & this legion of demons. At last, they make a deal. If Christ agrees to send them into the swine, then they will leave. Just to note, Jesus has the right & ability to cast them out. I am not impuning Jesus' authority, just saying that it was not Jesus saying, 'Demons be gone!', & they left. This was a real struggle. These are the kind that can only be removed by prayer is said by Jesus elsewhere also. There is a method, & it is not cut & dry, ready for the fire.
Last part, you end up realizing, from other passages, that Jesus cast out demons from believing Jews & later it is said in the epistles the believers are doing this. The event where the demon claimed to know Jesus & to have heard of Paul, but then chases these believers out, comes to mind. Belief in God & the Holy spirit is not sufficient to be immune to demons. There is a real struggle, in which the Holy spirit helps.
Great talk all the same. A blessing for sure.

  • @rod8989
    @rod8989 Před 4 lety

At John 8:58 there is a verb γενέσθαι (=genesthai). This is a verb, and is derived from γίνομαι (=ginomai), which has a range of meanings, such as to be, to do, to make, to appear, to arise, to seem, to come, to come to pass, to happen, to finish, to perform, to become. Its Strong's number is 1096. Its grammatical form γενέσθαι is given in Bagster as 'aor. 2, infin', which means it is a 2nd aorist type verb and an infinitive. An infinitive is the form beginning with 'to', as in those examples just listed, or to fish, to write, to complete, to err, to dodge, to invent. This word γενέσθαι occurs in other places with a strong future aspect, such as at Revelation 1:1 'things which must be soon TO ARISE '; 'what things have TO COME TO PASS'(Revelation 4:1); 'the things which must be soon TO ARISE' (Revelation 22:6). The context in John 8:58 is Jesus ' superiority over Abraham, so Jesus says, 'Before Abraham is TO ARISE, I Am'. The verb γενέσθαι is best rendered with that strong future aspect. But why, then, when we look at the KJV, do we find this strict infinitive, γενέσθαι, translated as 'was', an imperfect past tense put for an infinitive? It says, 'Before Abraham WAS, I am'. But that gives the silly impression that Jesus was around before Abraham! Whenever did an infinitive verb become an imperfect past tense verb? When we look at other versions we see the same dodge. One version has γενέσθαι as 'came into existence '. Yet they have it correctly as an infinitive in other places.
These inventions and grammatical violations all serve the polytheistic error of making Jesus seem to have been around before Abraham, so turning him into one of Mysticism's gods in its three gods system.
At John 17:5 there is the common and simple present infinitive verb εἶναι (=einai), Strong's 1511. Jesus is speaking of 'the world TO BE', or 'the world TO COME'. Why, then, does the KJV have that strict infinitive as 'was'? One version has the verb as a noun, 'existence'. The false translating makes Jesus seem to have been around before the world came into being. But neither the grammar nor wider context nor common sense allow such a mystical notion of 'the man Christ Jesus' (1 Timothy 2:5). Something more sinister the KJV does is put "made" for ἐγένετο (=egeneto) at John 1:3 instead of "arose", smuggling in a plural passive verb for what is a singular active verb, and it gives the silly impression that Jesus was the Creator rather than God. Kinda like when KJV puts "created" instead of "founded" in colossians 1:16
