For those asking about the dropped spark plug, it's possible to have a cracked porcelain insulator that will lead to at minimum a future misfire, at maximum a piece of porcelain caught between the piston and cylinder wall.
You can't always see a crack, so it's much better to be safe than sorry.
Thanks. I figured a gap tool would fix the bend, never thought about the porcelain.
Had a porcelain caught between piston and wall. A lot of oil smoke going from exhaust. Engine literally died on my eyes. Sad moment for 1st car
Back when I owned ICE vehicles, I would ALWAYS change all the spark plugs at once if it was necessary to change any. From 2004-2021 it wasn't necessary because I owned 2 Priuses, and they had super long lasting spark plugs I never needed to change (I did all my oil changes on schedule and never had any engine problems either). My car now doesn't have anything like spark plugs, the only maintenance is checking brake fluid once a year, replacing only if necessary (too much water content, etc), and cleaning/lubricating the calipers if you live in an area that salts the roads in winter (which I do). And of course, maintaining proper tire pressure at all times (much more important in my car than people are used to).
But yeah, in my 20's I owned a lot of junk vehicles, thankfully had a mechanic friend that taught me how to do basic maintenance and would help me out with more complex stuff.
That makes plenty of sense
You don’t ever gap Iridium spark plugs, the coating on the center electrode chips off and ruins the plug when you do that. All of the other issues listed here are secondary to that.
We like Peter because we trust your judge of character and you like him
Before I came to Ray's channel I used to say all sorts of profanity when things would fall while working on my car. Today I was changing the oil and dropped my wrench trying to fish it out of the toolbox. Ended up just saying "gravity" instead of "god dammit" like always, and my mood went up instead of down. I'm glad you make these vids, Ray. Really helped me change my attitude on "things falling." lol
Good day everyone
You and South main auto are my two go to mechanic channels. Love watching your professionalism and problem solving through logic and deduction. I’ve learned so much and saved a lot of money with dyi for minor repairs. But you’ve also cost me a lot of money because now I need to go find an assault scope for my air gun
Watch Wes Work is another great channel
Proper assault air gun clone reflex sight is not expensive. The AK Master Mount costs a bit more.
Check out Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics, too. Ivan does some great diagnostics. Most of the customers had already spent thousands of dollars at multiple shops, firing the parts cannon, only to find a wire was corroded or a ground was bad.
My two go to channels too.
I feel like Ray takes the cowboy style of diagnosing, look at a few Schrodinger's Box videos to see exactly how thorough you can get in diagnosing what's wrong
I love the fact that my 2 favorite CZcams mechs watch each other!!!!
It's very rewarding to watch a master at his trade.
Great video, Ray! I feel you on the dropping everything! That's why I cant turn wrenches professionally any more, I have Neuropathy in my hands, I literally drop EVERYTHING at least twice. Kinda hard to book time when your dropping everything. I feel its military related, but VA says "meh". I used to brag I could work on everything from nitro powered RC cars to M-1 tanks, now I putter on my own stuff, take care of the house and cats. over 30 years of turning wrenches professionally. Guys I would like to advise you? I'm not trying to sell you anything! But I have used a plastic ball with a Gyroscope inside it. It's called a Dyno Flex. You can look it up on the internet. I've used it for years after my thumbs were killing me! It really helped my thumbs and hands even my elbows and shoulders. I gave a couple to people who had wrist injuries elbow and hands. They vastly improve their own injuries. There not that expensive. Just a thought.
Any Viet Nam duty? Sounds like Agent Orange related symptoms. Any service near burn-pits? Could be a source and a ticket to VA care. Hang in there.

I hear that. I was a shade tree with my barn and a whole cabinet of tools, working on friends cars, now in Florida at 60 I have to hire out what I can't do anymore. My back won't let me bend over fenders. I don't have friends in Tampa to help.
After watching these videos I had my local independent go completely through my car correcting anything that he thought was in need of attention (it's an old car). It now handles and drives like new, and the confidence in the service goes first hand. I didn't realize how "tired" it was getting. The complete service wasn't cheap, but neither is a new car.
People get wrapped up in the "economy" of a few hundred dollars a month payment, vs an occasional big-bang maintenance bill. I know I have- wish I still had my '94 Dakota, but when the transmission started to crap the bed I traded it in; every truck since has been inferior.
My Car was just 18 months old. I opted for a Service monthly payment which then means I've paid upfront for my years service. I miss the small payment less than the bigger one. But if I left it without a Service and just did as needed then would it balance up. I don't know the right answer but that's what I opted for. The main reason was I'm not a Car person who updates the model every couple of years and am aiming for this one to last 10-15 years as its diesel and I only go about 14k a year. Who knows which way is more cost effective.

Pro tip: When removing the spark plug wires on those 4.8,5.3,6.0 and 6.2, don’t pull right away. Put the spark wire pliers on the boot and spin. It will break the connection free making them easier to come off and you will never break one again.
Can you buy just the steel insulators?
I am constantly amazed at how filthy the inside of people vehicles are. How can they ride around in that filth?
Agreed! I’m not saying that every filthy, poorly cared for vehicle is also poorly maintained and serviced, but I bet most are.
Coming from a construction background with a lit of work trucks I can say that mine has been filthy a lot, and it's not because I'm messy it's just the fact of working and throwing stuff in there and not having the time to clean it
People go days and some cases a week without showering.
A wise customer choosing to replace all the sparkplugs. If one is bad it's better to replace a whole set than have another fail and require the same service again.
Yep...back when I drove crap vehicles in my youth and did maintenance myself, I ALWAYS changed things like spark plugs as a set. I never used a torque wrench on them, but I knew it was all too easy to crack the porcelain on them if you use too much force. Once I got my first new car (Prius in 2004), I never needed to change plugs, those have super long lasting plugs...since I always changed the oil at the required interval, I never had any engine problems at all. Today I no longer have an ICE vehicle so I don't have to worry about that.

I use a chunk of 3/8" ID fuel line to start the threads on no. 8 plug. Stick the plug in the hose then twist the hose and it will thread finger tight.
Would love to see a 'before & after' view of the internals of an engine that's had that cleaning treatment. It clearly has a beneficial effect based on the fuel trim changes, but it would be nice to see.

I could be very mistaken, but on my smaller laptop screen they look like taper seat plugs, you do not want to lean on those not having crush washers, otherwise a good possibility of shearing off the hex body next time they have to come out and then you have real trouble.
There is a thing called degreeing your spark plugs also so I wonder if what will affect the other I know that if you put your plugs in too far or not deep enough there's an issue but also if you get the electro facing in the proper direction you can get 3 to 11% more power
@@572Btriode my snapped plug was a Suzuki dl1000 in the rear cylinder . I wound it in expecting the crush washer to seat . I have a step about 3 feet wide and 10 inches tall that I use when I work on trucks. I'm 6 feet tall so I'm not a short guy, but that step stool has made it much easier and less fatiguing to work on truck engines. The step stool is made of heavy gauge steel and has nonslip grip tape on the top. I highly recommend one if you've never used one before.
I'll say this, it seems working on that distributor-less ignition sure makes it easier to get the right wires hooked to the right plugs! :D
These dys you have to watch out for the voltage they are really high, they have a nastier kick than an electric fence, they have an resistor to keep the amps down but not on an engine They can hit over 2 amps (sometimes more than 10 amps which is a kill setting) plus up to 200 thousand volts. Not nice to play with without the right tools. The old coil system could be deadly the new ones , funnily enough work on the Tesla principle. If you can find it watch he's multi spark demonstration it's awesome.
The LS engines are easy peasy for plug wires, they're all the exact same length and impossible to connect the plugs to the wrong coils. As Ray mentioned, the #8 plug and wire is a PITA to remove though. I always begin with the #8 on my Silverado, do the worst first😜 Changing plugs and wires on my Firebird = 😲🤬😖☹
@@erikandreassen6531 do they really kick harder than an electric fence? I regularly use myself as a ground to test for spark 🤣. I've always been afraid to touch the fence and never tried it.
@@aaronsprojects9622 8,000-45,000V, 1-3mA is what I found among a few sources. Apparently most of the resistance is in the plug wire and not the plug itself.

As always Ray, I learned something new. Thanks again for your attention to detail.
In my aviation day, torque wrench was god. You could be missing some other tools, but either you or the shop had to have torque wrenches, and they all had to have current calibration sticker. You don't, and the FAA will bitchslap the shit out of you.
Second most important (though not FAA required, but extremely useful) were safety wire pliers.
Those safety wire pliers are an absolute godsend
Good job Ray

Out of my experience for the bank 2 side I've always taken the wheel off to make it much easier to remove and install the plugs. It is a little more work but it does make a world of a difference
Another FWIW tip is instead of using the spark plug socket to start threading the new plugs, use a short piece of vacuum tubing that fits snuggly over the plug's plug wire electrode. Once the plug is hand-tightened by using the tubing, use the plug socket to torque to spec. The vacuum tubing provides more flexibility and minimizes the chance of dropping the plug.
I believe in this model, Tahoe/burban, and silverado! There is an inner fender cover in the way you would have to remove that can be more of a 🐻 to remove than the 🐻 spark plug, so weigh your options! I have a 2011 siverado, and it takes 30+ minutes to remove the fender cover.
@@trx420fm1, on my 2014 Silverado, to remove the inner fender wells there are maybe five plastic push/pull pins to remove them. It only takes a couple minutes remove them and the spark plugs are right there in front of you, on both sides so it’s really easy to get to them.
@Tim Finch On the 2011, the inner fender is a little more involved; it's not hard just not worth taking off to get to 1-2 plugs on the passenger side. The driver side isn't an issue; I just do it without removing it. The back 2 are tough but not horrible. Now what really sucks is changing the oil sender/screen in the back that sucks and a driverside motor mount. they suck you have to remove the wheel and inner fender to remove the motor mount.

Love the tools you use, I normally use an old spark plug with a ground clip. A way bit cruder than what you use but simpler idea.
The added bonus of his is that it can also check K volts of the coil it’s adjustable and has a scale of 10-50Kvolts

Maybe the misfire came from that plug that separated when you unplugged the wire to test for spark.
The misfire was there before he worked on anything
It's Rainman Ray!.. Hallelujah it's Rainman Ray!
Hey Ray; like the cool pre-roll sequence at the beginning; nice addition. Love your editing skills, keep doing what you’re doing man….
Hi, another great video as usual. Just a quick point, depending on how long it was misfiring some of the unburnt fuel will pass the piston rings and end up in the oil pan reducing its lubrication properties. A quick sniff of the dipstick or oil filer will confirm this. The oil in turn will now give off fuel vapour in the crankcase. The Crankcase breather will now be adding extra octane to the air via the inlet manifold running the engine rich and throwing off the fuel trims (This can be proven by temporarily removing the crankcase breather from the inlet manifold and clamping or blocking off the inlet manifold and watching the fuel trims return to normal). This can only be resolved with an oil and filter change as the oil quality has been compromised anyway. (A Retired Tech).
I used to align the electrode on my old motorcycle.
Yes, it did make a very slight difference, mainly where it would breakdown due to misfiring.
I believe that's called, indexing the plugs. We used to do that in my Dad's dirt track engine. The plugs would be indexed in the heads on the bench. Then the heads went on the block. I have no clue of the science behind it but it's what we did and it did make a difference.
I'm guessing that when you do so, the fuel/air mixture would hit the plug at a specific spot that would somehow make a difference. Maybe either hitting the backside of electrode so the tip doesn't get the brunt of the mixture to keep it cleaner for longer or some other reason. I'm not a mechanic so it's all I've got on it. lol
I can’t remember or never worked out.
But it either let the swirl flow through faster to get fresher mix under the plug or stopped the swirl to stop the flame being blown out.
Love your leaf blower !
You've a good done job sir 😀👍🏻👍🏻
Ray, you are absolutely correct to torque plugs to their specifications. It's a cover your butt for you and your shop, for the legal side. Also if this wasn't the root cause, then this gives an accurate baseline to deal with more troubleshooting.
Sure, hand+quarter turn may be fine for your personal/home, but i fix for others on occasion (friends/family) and i look up specs for everyone i work on
Maybe im predisposed to being technical as I've been in the IT engineering/sysadmin role for 15 years so maybe thats just the way I think...but anyways, love your content, thanks for posting!
Unless you are changing plugs in a 4.6 or 5.4 Ford V8 2V. The heads only have about 4 or 5 threads to hold the plugs so they might blow out. The current day recommendation is 28 ft lbs for those engines and they won't blow out.
Sometimes you just have to get it done . I can say you do develop a pretty good calibrated hand . It’s a skill developed over years of turning wrenches. But your absolutely right about torque wrenches they work.
@@jamesdodson9417 I'm 78 and I've been changing my autos plugs since I was 16 and I haven't used a torque wrench yet even on my 5.4L 2V F150 and I haven't had any issues. Mechanics who do this all the time don't need a torque wrench for most things.
Injector tips could be clogged partially causing the fuel to not atomize properly causing a rich condition
