I'm not even an auto mechanic and I've spent hours watching your videos. What's wrong with me?! You are fun and entertaining and you make the work look so easy. Plus, I'm learning things and stuff. Keep making vids, man.
...and we don't have to wash up at the end of the video! hahaha
@Jimmy Jack - I watch for the exact reason too. Ray is a good mechanic and fun to watch.
Channels like Ray's have taught me how to do my own repairs AND, more importantly, when not to! Better to pay a mechanic to fix it right the first time than to pay them to repair the problem and the damage done when you tried to fix it yourself!
Yes sir thank you. Same here. You might also like the equally talented and entertaining "South Main Auto" channel. Watching both these channels you should probably just quit your job. Gonna be too busy. 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣
Ya aint alone dude. LOL I am an old parts guys. I enjoy watching as well.
Everyone has heard, "No plan ever survives first contact with the enemy." I'm not sure who said that. But Eisenhower said, "I have always found that plans are useless but planning is indispensable."
Ray I don't know if you actually read the comments but thank you for all of the awesome commentary and the great content. It's always a good day when I come home from work and chill to you doing what you. Stay awesome.
Re: Eric O's lights: NY is closer to the north pole so naturally magnet lumens work better and stay put stronger the further north you go; Stronger magnetic pull to the pole ya know.😏
I think Eric O's flashlights stick to rust not steel!
Another great video Ray! As an over 50 divorced woman, I enjoy your videos. They are very informative and funny. Now when I take my car in for service, I know what they are talking about and hopefully will not be scammed.
This is like my 3rd or 4th video straight in a row. I really enjoy them and you make them interesting and I’m learning also. Awesome videos! 👍
" ensure the shaft is held vertical with the slot up whilst disassembling the oil separator lest 17 ball bearings drop out and bounce merrily in the bilge." (Worthington high pressure air compressor manual, circa 1977 or so.). Every time I hear "gravity" I think of this line from one of the greatest repair manuals ever written :D
That is so poetic!
Ball bearings springs clips and set screws and little pins like in are you doing will run and hide as soon as you let go of them hunt them little burgers down and have a great day
Electrical tape around the wobbly sockets keep them straight-ish while allowing them to bend when you put pressure on it. Makes it easier to get the socket on the bolt.
Nice idea.
Cheap too.
Thank you for another day and another episode. The day is not quite the same without Ray's real and witty comments about what his world is like today.
My 2011 Chevy van pulled to the left right off the delivery truck,my company put 5 sets of front tires on it before they did an alignment! Geniuses
Your fleet management person must be related to the moron who runs our fleet at my company. I have a 2010 F450 that burns through front tires every 10,000 miles for the last 5 years. They refuse to have it aligned and just replace the tires. I drive about 30 to 40,000 miles per year. How stupid!
Why am I not surprised... Too many companies value cost-saving more than their employees safety...
Our new Savana has a gap where the A pillar meets the mirror that you could almost fit a snickers bar. The other side couldn’t fit a toothbrush. The rear door panels are made out of the same material as a dumpster lid and have jagged edges like it was cut by a 7 year old with a dremel tool. Quality control is not something that’s highly valued on fleet vehicles.
I had a 1953 Chevy van with a 327 motor built by voltec and I was still learning how to drive and what was a beautiful vehicle I have to admit I did bad things have a great day
@@FloodExterminator an airline will be but we had a safety meeting and you were supposed to be aware of that problem and not get hurt they afford and not liable have a great day
When you changed swivel sockets and it went flying, I have to admit I laughed...hard, I've had that happen to me many times, on a different note I hope you don't let those that complain and criticize bother you because they don't have a clue, I was an ASE certified tech for a very long time and so far I haven't seen you do anything wrong or take any unnecessary shortcuts, I've worked with some exceptional techs and I've worked with parts hangers and you fall into the former category not the latter.
That’s what I enjoy about Ray’s videos. Actually seeing sockets, bolts, nuts, and tools getting dropped. Doesn’t make me feel as stupid when it happens to me. There is nothing more frustrating than spending time searching for a dropped socket or bolt. Worse is when you have to start taking parts off to find the part! Not to mention my wife coming out to the garage telling me, “I thought you said this wouldn’t take long”.
@@benaldredge2671 Why do wives light those fuses?
the 20 minute mark and that sigh made me laugh out loud
Personally I like rollock sanding disc when they take off they go across the shop like a UFO it's great as long as you don't hit anybody in the head and if you do hey have a sense of humor you'll get over it have a great day
@@benaldredge2671 a few weeks ago I dropped a 12 mm bolt under my hood hunting around with a flashlight and a magnet finally gave up drove the car for 2 days open the hood in Long behold there was my 12 mm socket now I have to admit I'm a pack rat I hate breaking up sets so what I found that socket laying right there in plain sight I grabbed it with a magnet and stuck it into my socket holder and I was a happy man have a great day
Love it that you take the time to clean up all the part. The mark of a mechanic that cares. Good for you.
Greetings from Germany ! I am not a mechanic plus I do not even have a car anymore, but I enjoy your great sense of humor. I have lived in the US for many years, and would have brought my car half way across the country to have it serviced by you Sir ! Keep up the good work. You make people happy - well, at least me :)
To be honest I would drive halfway across the country if my car would make it just to see Ray and if he worked on my vehicle I would say that'd be a definite bonus plus you'd be great company I know it have a great day
As others have commented, Ray and Eric O. (South Main Auto Channel) are the best youtube video’s on the net period. Both are very, very good at showing you how they do what they do. In the end though, both are just really class people and I love just watching them as they do their work. Great entertainment. Honest, funny and good people. I look forward to video’s from both. Both of them can also laugh at themselves.
Go on admit it🤔, you also like seeing Mrs O😍😍😘, she is lovely💋💕🇬🇧🇬🇧
Check out Rust Belt Auto. Great mechanic
I saw a comment on the Interwebz a few days ago that caused me to spit Texas sweet tea all over my keyboard.
You can't hurt my feelings. I used to hold the light for my Dad. Pure gold.
Not double charging for labor. Bless you, Ray. Had a shop replace my leaking A/C compressor. They called me and said that the serpentine belt could use replacement, and I said OK. When I picked up the car, they charged me 1/2 hr add'l labor to replace the belt. I made the manager take it off the bill, but how many people would know to do that??
Toyota Belt Used as a Chevy Door Pull Handle Now that is Creative Right there @Rainman Ray's Repairs
Ray, you'd better protect your back and not take anything for granted. One little eff-up that messes up your back and you'll never be able to fix vans again. Take it from me; I've gone from a fixer to an armchair mechanic in an instant.
I drove and maintained/repaired GM vans for over 20 years as a building tradesman, before taking a paper-pushing insurance job. I can definitely appreciate pulling the dog house and hanging over the front seats.
Every time I see you work on a van like this I'm glad I switched to a Transit Connect from the E series van years ago. I know it's a lot smaller, but I can actually work on the thing.
Not to Worry. Eventually even Transit thing will have it's repair foibles. As will upcoming E models when they eventually fail. Their powertrain parts prices will make current stuff seem Dollar Store bargains.
I think he was referring to the ease of getting to things in the transit. It’s built more like a minivan and doesn’t have half the engine in the cabin.
@@stevewhiting556 Exactly. It's super easy to work on.
@@yodabolt1247 Almost sounds too good to be true. May it and you enjoy a long and minimally invasive service life.
We just had to trade (corporate fleet decision) our transit with 320k miles for a brand new GMC Savana. We don’t work on them much ourselves, but my sales guy who has to drive it is pissed. He had one back in 06 or so and it was always in the shop for something. The transit only visited the shop for a couple recalls and general wear items (brakes, tires, etc.) We also carry 3-4k pounds in them on occasion and the transit was dead stable. THe GMC gets a noticeable amount of odd movement over 50mph. Plus, the transit drives like a big minivan. The GMC drives like a school bus.
It's so nice to watch you do it the right way. Thank you.
I subscribed during the first round of the Express van chronicles.. Stuck around through the Silveryrado sagas.. now we're back for the Express van sequals.. Love the content.
Like many others; your video's are great! One thing I see is the intermittent use of flashlight gravity. To correct this situation, find an old computer hard drive. The older, the better. Disassemble it and inside with other interesting stuff you'll find a pair of very thin, VERY strong magnets. Pry them off and take back to the shop. Glue (optional) to anything you need to really stay where you put it... And you'll see how a hard drive actually works, very interesting all of the mechanical stuff that's involved.
Ray has a very magnetic personality which neutralizes the electron force in the magnets on his flashlights therefore gravity is neutralized or magnetism is neutralized and they fall have a great day
the drop socket was one of your better goof-off tricks. Got a good laugh.
I was glad to see you using some magnets in this episode.
Those people who gave you grief about plug wires never spent time trying to get them off without breaking them. Those things get baked on and are tough to get off. Wires should be included when replacing plugs. Good job
Ray: "We need a plan so we have something to deviate from..." Military after thousands of years of experience: "No plan survives first contact with the enemy." Genius.
I always try to have a plan a a plan b and a plan C because sometimes the best laid plans of mice and men with sometimes go astray have a great day
It is such a pleasure to watch you and Eric doing this stuff, explaining it, and enjoying your job! Puts a spring in my step first thing in the morning! Had to stop watching My Friend DIY, as he always seems to be angry, and yells at everything. He is funny sometimes though, which I think is his intention.
I try not to get angry at a job because if I find myself getting in that state of mind best thing I can do is walk away take a deep breath and regroup and come back with a clear head have a great day
A 54 minute video. This is going to be a good one.
I really enjoy your videos! Your commentary, which keeps you sane, is one of favorite parts. You never miss a “doodly-doo” when the phone rings and your liquid shine in the can music is a hoot too!
Dude, I just gotta laugh. I have been a Mechanic for over 50 years yeah I know I’m old. But all take bolt dropping, flashlights falling and sockets coming off the extensions. You have just made my day. You rock Brother Ray. I’m glad y’all made it through Ian ok. Peace Bro. Do do do do do (phone rings)
Morning coffee, repair with Ray, and a good doo…doo…dee…dee…doo. That’s how I start my day. Thanks Ray!
That's OK Ray...getting those headers off & trying to remove those broken studs in that cramped space would have been torture anyway🤐!!!
Put plenty of penetrating oil on them center punch them use a center drill or they called a combination drill then use a right angle drill motor with a left hand drill bit stubby drill bit and that will help take them out have a great day I have done this many times too many times and I made it work have a great day
Really impressed with how meticulous you are I just wonder how many mechanics don't take those extra steps that you seem to do naturally
Sometimes he does other not so much.
Having a helper guide you up onto the rack is great and all, but you can also use those two convex mirror on the wall to help guide you if one is not available.
I volunteer with the Patriot Guard Riders, and one of our mottos is "Semper Gumby"... in reference to your "we have a plan so that we have something to deviate from"
Ray , It truly is a pleasure to watch you work .. I enjoy the humor you inject in to the task at hand and the knowledge you treat us to .. Thank You and continue the great videos you share with us.....
Love the kinda subtle tribute to our friend from up north! Nicely played.
I really enjoy your CZcams channel I was auto mechanic for over 20 years for Ford dealership and man you teach me a lot still I'm 54 years old and you still teaching me stuff thanks
Hi Ray, love watching your videos, I'm in scotland , place called eastkilbride just outside Glasgow.
Hey Ray keep up the good work and amazing videos, just wanted to say the well timed "sigh" was awesome when u dropped your socket and wobbly bit, that was funny, thanks for all the laughs and all the very good and awesome information for all of us do it ourselves weekend worriers.
Hi Ray, I am sure you are aware but with rubber hoses, I usually spray them with some silicone spray to make it easy to place them back onto their mounting point. Great videos keep them coming and you to have a great day. 👍
I give you credit. If I had to do work on that van thru that doghouse, I would probably quit and go home.
I have done it before when I was young, thin and flexible, but those days are gone.
Chevy- Makes a van.
Ray- Makes it better in one video.
Nice vid!
Brings back memories of tracing wires on this same model vehicle for 5 hours trying to find out where the 5v reference went.
Cool vid, im learning alot about how to use a scan tool from your vids . I pulled a lq4 out of a 04 exrpess for my 55 chevy.old cars with these new engines is the greatest thing ever. So is learning the scan tool
I love how you find ways to have fun while keeping focus on quality and professionalism! Keep up the great work.
"The reason we have a plan is so there is something to deviate from." 😎
that sigh at 19:58... i felt that in my soul.
30:50 had me rolling 😂 did not expect that. Pleasure as always Sir
I did enjoy that cleaning montage! I do like how the top of the engine is assessable from the inside.
When your swivel sockets get worn and just flop over, try using some electrical tape on them. I will hold the socket so you can get it to where you want it to go.
I'm glad he mentioned eric o. South main auto is another great mechanic channel. Highly recommend
After watching many many of your videos I've realized something! Being a mechanic in Florida is like being a meth dealer in Florida, it's just so freaking easy! I grew up wrenching and currently still wrench in the Rust Belt and seeing the stuff you have to work on I don't know whether to laugh or cry! Everything you do would be 10 times harder where I live. I really need to move to the South!
What we that’s most of us viewers find amazing is your absolute knowledge of all these different cars ,,trucks ,,,different engines .
Great to watch rainman
One broken manifold bolt sometimes quickly turns into 4. Probably best to leave it.
Lol I tried replacing the ex manifold gaskets and found a broken off stud, spent an hour botching it up to find that 2 more were broken as well. I just put it back together and stayed away from them 😂
I hate to say it this is an assumption on my part but usually when they break like that it's because of heat stress cycles and motor mounts getting weak have a good day
Good morning Mr. Rainman. I love your channel, it is my go-to EVERY morning during breakfast, thank you!
Over the years I have had many vehicles at many shops, and NEVER ONCE have I been told “we inadvertently broke something, we are fixing it at our cost sorry”, never. I have paid many times for other parts and been told I needed them, or they broke and we didn’t do it (mechanic).
Are you the only real honest mechanic out there? What is to be expected when a mechanic ham-fists a part and breaks it versus the customer will never know what happened, charge him?
Thanks again for my most watched you tube channel, keep up the good work please.
If my shop (construction equipment) breaks something that was unrelated to the repair, we eat the part and generally don’t tell the customer unless it’s an obvious external part and they ask. To me, that’s the cost of doing what we do. An errant hammer strike or dropping something happens with some regularity. Sometimes though, we have to break a good part to get to the bad part. The customer pays for that, but they are warned before we do the repairs that it’s a possibility. This comes with experience. Ray did a repair a while back on a Chevy truck(?) and he knew that he would probably break the plug wires, and the customer was warned. Ray broke the wires and they were replaced. This is done to CYA. If X part fails, we have to remove part Y. Part Y seems unrelated but generally breaks when removed, so it’s built into the quote. If part Y doesn’t break, the customer does not get charged and gets the win.
It’s a tough business. Your customer comes to you with a need and your industry has a bad reputation. They’re already playing defense as soon as they walk in the door. This is why I have zero problem showing a customer whatever they feel they need to see to be comfortable spending their money in my shop. “Hey, this repair is going to be $500.” Why? “Let me show you your parts versus new parts and why they need to be replaced.” It’s against OSHA regulations, but I’ll even bypass my tech and complete the repair myself with the customer in the shop (most of our repairs are 30 minutes or less.) I put hearing and eye protection on them and let them watch. Or, I’ll do the disassembly and take the bad parts to them to show them as I’m doing the repair. The whole time I’m explaining to them how to properly care for and lubricate their equipment so that they have to see me less often.
There is a competing shop down the road that is generally cheaper than I am, but I have hundreds of regular customers who come to me because they know I won’t screw anyone to make an extra dollar. The business is lucrative enough without scamming people. Plus, when people sense a scam, they don’t come back. Repeat business is worth more than upselling unnecessary parts.
@@stevewhiting556 Thanks Steve for a very comprehensive answer!
You’re welcome. Transparency isn’t necessarily a corporate policy, but I’ve been in my business for almost 20 years and I know my customers and I know their equipment. I run my shop how I’d want to see it as a consumer. If you’re honest and upfront with me, I’ll give you my money. I always look at my business from the customer’s perspective. After all, customers pay the bills, not payroll.
"This is why make a plan... So we'll have something to deviate from... " Truer words were never spoken... in my experience, Mr. Rainman!
I was an alignment mechanic for many years. My first step was to check air pressures, especially if the customer complained of pulling side to side. About 1 out of 3 had a low tire on the side it was pulling. The other trick was to swap front tires side to side and see if the pull changed. This was more frequent if new tires were just put on. Radial pull was a thing back in the day. You do a great job and I love the content. Keep up the great work!
@ 13:23 Made In Canada😁 Very rare today to see anything made in Canuckland. My Silverado and Firebird were built in Canada.
Agreed! Big diff. Between Made in & Assembled in ! We Canadians are assemblers , not Makers ! Iv’e owned over 20 new Silverado’s & every one came from the US , with the Canadian flag inside the door ! Destined for Canada with French on Sunvisors & Km speedos ! GM just started assembling 1500 ‘s in Oakville , On.for the first time! LOL Everything made in China, Korea,Taiwan & Bangladesh 👎

Ray the man because he has a cool fan beside the van.
How many people thought the valve covers were painted black until Ray cleaned them? I'll start with me...

Ray, I think the reason Eric O doesn't drop his flashlight as often is, with it being his own workshop he doesn't move as quickly or frenetic as those of us who have to answer to a higher being. Except Mrs O.
Wow...those parts cleaned up nicely. I didn't think they would get that clean.
OK, now you can breathe again. Thanks Ray for this one.
Yes Eric O, Ivan and yourself, the very best, oh yeh cant forget Advanced level auto too!!! Keep the bews coming!😀⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I've been enjoying your videos and using what I've seen to help my brother with his car issues. If we lived closer to Florida I'd suggest to him to send his car to you.
I literally (not figuratively) just bought that flashlight because You and Eric O. used it and i have broken 3 harbor freight flashlights this year. I thought since Ray always drops his then it must be tough enough to survive me in my garage.
Damn your editing skills are becoming more awesome with every video you put out.
Please keep it up and look after yourself.

i like the dual side exiting exhaust. I knew it sounded good when you brought it in the bay
Dude had a full tank!
Just like most shops we have a loud speaker system to inform you the phone was ringing. One day the local phone utility had a full system breakdown. At that exact moment someone tried to call us. The phone ringer/ loud speakers was stuck in a ringing loop (The Do Doooooooooo Do's) never stopped. After about 45 mins of constant Do Dooooooooo Do's the owner, service managers and customer were loosing their shit. I went around with a ladder and disconnected all the Speakers. "Why didn't we think of that" (Management). I carried on with work in peace.
Flashlight gravity always funny.. That and the "Doo Dee Doos" 😂.. Great vids Brother.. I like the way that you don't screw the customer. I've had good and bad experiences with some shops, so now I do more myself then taking it in.. Keep up the awesome vids Buddy.. Thanks
