CHEVY SILVERADO LOUD TICKING POPPING ENGINE NOISE AFM LIFTER FAILURE AND DELETE

- In today's video we take a look at a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with a 5.3l V8 engine. The customer complaint is that the engine is making a really loud tapping and popping noise. This truck does come equipped with General Motors AFM or Active Fuel Managment system, which is notorious for having problems and lifters with a high failure rate. There is even a class action lawsuit against GM for this design. After tearing down the engine we find that we have a locked up AFM roller lifter and the camshaft has been severely damaged. The decision was made to install an AFM DOD delete kit to insure that this problem never happens again. Follow along as I take all the steps necessary to install this kit and get this truck back up and running!

I worked for The Torrington Company making the roller bearings for the lifters for General Motors. We lost the contract in 2009 due to cheaper competition prices. From 1981 to 2009 we never had a bearing failure due to our manufacturing. We made between 40 to 50 million bearings per year. I guess that's what you get when you cheap out on parts!
Proven track record . However , when GREED comes into play , all bets are off !
bean counters & gamblers.. throw the dice
I've owned 3 gm products , were all garbage & financial loss , I'll stick to Ford I'm currently driving a ranger with 275k as my work truck and been a great buy
Can you say china! cheap parts means more bonuses for CEO people
Regular full synthetic oil changes help!
I can’t believe more mechanics can’t just be a great person and communicate like this guy and work through stuff like him .
The labor cost(s) for a mechanic to perform a a troubleshoot this in-depth would negate the cost to just replace the entire assembly. Not to mention replacement parts costs and the labor for them to reassemble everything.
Trustworthy mechanics are worth every penny nowadays. Good job.
The fact I understood everything this man said and was actually following every step is just amazing. Keep the great work man.
It’s pretty insane how we can watch someone do this for free.
Man, this is quite a skill you’ve got here my friend, you will never hurt for work. Wish there were more like you out there.
It’s not hard to work on a LS motor kids are making 1000hp motors out of them in there 20s for peanuts
It's simple. Follow procedure the best mechanics know how to follow procedure and tweak procedure where best fit
💓
Not hard man. Remember how you took them off, get a manual, and buy new bolts
Super job
Finding a guy like you is nearly impossible. Someone that will really diagnose an issue. 👍👍

@@Johnny_GuitarYou forget Ivan @ Pine hollow diagnostics!
it's not impossible they prefer to work with people who really appreciate their talent and ignore the annoying ones,
Great video! This reinforces the reason why I won't buy a GM truck past the 2006 model year. I know you can disable the AFM, but the customer shouldn't have to go through this drama. GM, once again, trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist. Most people who buy a truck aren't interested in gas mileage. This reminds me of to the 8-6-4 Cadillac engine in the early '80's. General Motors could screw up a one car funeral.
This is cafe standards, and government regulations, not gm-
I read about these AFM nightmares and stayed away from the 5.3. I have a 2010 Silverado with the 4.8 V8 and no AFM. Great truck.
@@LeroyGrider More proof if you want something screwed up and your wallet drained, let the government get involved.
This gave me flashbacks to when I was a kid. My dad had similar issues with his 73 Buick Lesabre. One lifter tapping away. He tore apart the engine in front of the house and replaced the cam shaft and lifters. This was in the late 80's. I learned so much about cars from him growing up, house repairs too. This was a great video man!! thank you for this.
I learned from my dad as well, out in the side yard!! R.I.P. Dad❤️🙏🏽
P
Without CZcams too. Your dad was legendary
Great video on how to delete a crappy design! I really appreciate the way you explain this process. GM should learn something from this problem, it's costing it's customers a lot of money and trouble. Sucks when you can trust your engine to get you back home. My 08 Tahoe just experienced engine failure for no apparent reason, glad I was close to home. "Like a rock" not any more, sounds like a rock bouncing around in my engine. I've kept the oil changed every 3000 miles with Mobil 1 and have never mistreated this engine. My 97 sierra is still running great with 330.000 miles. I'm very disappointed in GM over this design, I bought a V8 and I want 8 cylinders popping all the time:)
This is by far the best engine repair video I've seen. Can't find a mechanic with skills like you. Awesome video bro, learned a lot from watching, looks like a hell of a lot work. I like how you explained everything as you went from start to finish. well done !
He’s a hell of a teacher on this job for sure ! 💯👍
I could do this job with my eyes closed and I would let this dude work on my stuff 100%. The only thing I saw him do that I would change is I would insist on using an MLS head gasket. I hope they change the oil out of this truck within the first couple hundred miles, then again at 500, then again at 1000 to get all of that metal out of the system.
Great mechanic wondering if he brought heads to machine shop
He is not a mechanic! This man is a "Technician " how I know this. I am also one.
Um, there are thousands of diy'ers out there doing this to their own engine. It's really not that big of deal.
It's refreshing to see a real mechanic at work, instead of just a part changer as so many shops have now. Thanks for the video. At 81 yrs old I have to rely on more people to do the things that I once did. I never know if they did it right or just enough to get the truck out of the shop. Thanks again
I've seen several of these AFM videos, and I can say that this one is by far the most complete, yet entertaining and quick. This channel never waste your time and that's what I like about it. The accelerated sections with music is a nice touch too.
Great work brother😎👍 I don’t understand why they continue to put AFM in cars and trucks. Just cut your losses and admit you messed up. Makes no sense. This is coming from a chevy guy
Afm is reliable during your 3 year warranty period but beyond 5 years brings lots of work for their dealerships. 👍
Always chasing mpg because of the liberal woke climate change politics....if you "keep having" problems with gas engines it helps the positioning for ev vehicles
Once a mechanic back in the day starting in the late 60's when working on vehicles was far more easier than today, brought back a lot of good memories. You go the extra mile and really clean the parts before installing, which I see a lot of videos where they don't put the pride in their work, like you do. Your videos are well made and your explanations are clear and to the point. God bless you and your business. Keep the videos coming. Thank you.
Great job. I’m an old school back yard garage weekend repair guy. At 73 years young, I found your video really informative. Back in the day our 56 Chevys, the 289, 327 and latter the early 350s were the motors of choice for street racing and the occasional track race. We would replace the cams with high lift cams, and upgraded intake manifolds, solid lifters then if we could afford it 850 Holly spread bore carbs, always updated the points to electronic when they came available. When dual point ignition coils came along they really helped. We would then search the junk yards for posi track rear gears. Then after a few nights of hard work take the old Chevys out and blow wthem up. Had lots of fun learning how to work on vehicles and motorcycles. The engines of today and the electronics, the upgrades amaze me at today’s technology. I wish I could do it all over again, only with today’s technology. Anyhow, working on cars and motorcycles got me interested in another field. I took up plumbing, heating and a/c that allowed me to dabble as a weekend motor warrior. Again loved your videos.
I've seen a lot of tear-downs, but almost no one builds them back up. Very informative.
This guy is absolutely amazing. I would have no problem writing a check for whatever it cost. No questions asked because I know it’s going to be done, right.
Tremendous comprehensive A-Z tutorial . Not only do you show us how to do the work but you also ensure that we know WHY which is sooo cool / appreciated !!
Wow, Cylinder Deactivation is more trouble than its worth. With a conventional engine, lifter failure does not cause low oil pressure. Looks like you did a good job fixing this engine.
O K ! 😁 This video convinces me to buy a used 2019 Silverado with a 5.3. I never expected to see GM quality go in reverse from years past when things always should get better! It's good to see a kit that puts things right!
We need something similar for the dodge 5.7 !!!
I’ll stick with my 02 Sierra 5.3. Still runs great 20 years later. Even swapped in a Denali cluster for the trans temp gauge.
not only is this guy a fantastic mechanic, he's an even more fantastic teacher/explainer!!!! Thanks Eric!!! 🙂
He would make a great teacher wouldn't he
This video has been excellent at explaining how to diagnose & repair the noise problem that existed with in the engine. Great Job!!!
This man can work on my vehichles anytime.
This was an absolutely fantastic video on this upper end partial rebuild. Loved every minute of it. Thank you very much.
It's cylinder #1 flooded by oil. Fouling out plug. Causing shaking. Reason is cylinder delete programing. Have program rewrote so all 8 cylinders fire at once. I deleted program and cylinder shut down selinoids. Replaced cam and better oil pump. The ticking is a exhaust manifold bolt is broken. It's common.
@@kellyarnett4062 F''cking amazing. The sh''t we go through to make a living. Thank you for the response. Keep it goin. Take care.

You sir are a Professional and Honest, 2 qualities rarely found in 1 mechanic.
Well done.
This is the second video I've watched by this gentleman. The first one saved me a lot of money. You sir are a class act, my respect and admiration for your knowledge and attention to detail. Thank you.
Great job, very informative and in depth. I'll be buying that kit for my GMC when it's time for a rebuild. Always hated AFM and thought it was a stupid idea. High risk for very little reward. I disabled mine immediately after I bought the truck. Got 180k on it with no issues so far.
The only reason that every auto manufacturer are using amf/dod on the v8s and v6s is to meet the emissions standards. The manufacturers fix for this is a ecu reflash and not a delete because of emissions standards. All of the active cylinder managements are giant piles of trash.
I just bought a 2024 Chevy Tahoe. I’m going to buy the thing to disable it hoping everything works. I’ve been doing my research. What year is your truck?
@@jrjr8738 I have a 2017 Silverado and a 2012 GMC Sierra.
Eric you're a Master at your Craft. No shortcuts, everything new, very professional. That owner is lucky to have you redo his engine. You are Blessed.
You are without a doubt a great mechanic. Remember folks use a high quality oil and change it regularly. Good job my friend. 👍
Now days mechanic shops just want to swap engines they dont work the way you do. They just dont bother and say you need another emgine new or use with low miles. They dont want to open the engine and fix whats bad. Props to you. You da man
This guy could work on my vehicles anytime.
This guy is amazing, I can never find a mechanic this good around here.
No kidding, finding a good mechanic is like finding leprechauns gold. Then the good ones charge 3 times the rate of others
Yelp, nobody wants to do anything anymore as long as the government feeds them.
@@rmmm6725 so true I end up doing most of the work myself because either they misdiagnose to find the easiest repair to soak money out of you are they really don't know what they're doing. Although at 60 years old it's getting harder for me to climb up underneath my vehicles.
I just shake me head when I see people going down the road with that metallic tap tap tap. It's like dude; stop emmediatly and fix it the moment you hear it. Don't let the engine beat itself to death and tripling your cost of repair.
i didn't know anything about DOD until now. I checked out several vids with animations and concise explanations then came back. what an adventure! again thanks for the lesson!
Wish there were 10K more of you.
All of your videos are great, but this one was truly awesome.
It’s sad, GM has tried cylinder management for decades and it’s always been a failure. Think clear back to the Cadillac V-8-6-4... total junk. Once again excellent job.
Great video... Eric it is always a pleasure to see you work on vehicles. You are an engineer when it comes to mechanics.
I just completed a cam and lifter job on my Vortec 8.1 Suburban. It was much easier than the LS engine in your video as the heads did not have to be removed. FYI , I used COMP CAMS as I put a slightly modified came back in resulting in more power for towing 😁
Great job. You did everything in a common sense manner. Also, unlike the many with these videos on CZcams, you didn’t over talk the process during the video. It was very refreshing. Thanks…
Definitely need you as my mechanic. You covered this like no other. Had both sides done on mine about a year ago. A dealer wanted 3400 to do this. Will be my last silverado I own
My wife and I worked at GM and we bought GM cars all our life but one day we went to GM dealer wanting to drive a new chevy truck.
We sat dawn at a dealers desk and ask to drive a truck but the salesman would let us drive a truck so we left the dealership and eventually bought a F250 because other GM dealers
treated us like shit also.
After watching this video I'm glad the GM salesman treated me the way he did . Great job on the engine but to bad you had to alter GM's junk to make it better. Maybe this is why they are going electric.
1999-2006 have the best engines GM ever made. ANY NEW GM IS GARBAGE
Don't buy a Ford without a warranty. I have no luck with them.
Just bought a 2010 Silverado a month ago with 120,000 miles on it and literally 30 days after purchasing, I've got a collapsed lifter. I'm just now learning about this issue. They are quoting me $4000 to replace all of them. I will never buy another domestic vehicle again. I have no doubt that Americans can make a good product but the CEOs will not let it happen because buying quality parts would cut too much into their profit margins.
I have a 2003 Silverado with 111000 miles on it and it’s making the same loud banging noise.I replace the oil regularly and had just put in full synthetic instead of high mileage.Anyways I was told it would be best to replace all lifters and cam .They want to take the whole motor out and to replace the oil pump while in there because the whole engine needs flushed because there could be metal shavings in the motor. That sounds expensive 😢
Dr. Fixit, thanks a bunch for bringing us along! Primo content and surgery were a complete success.
Great job by the owner of this channel. He is thorough and professional. This man uses tech and his brain power to fix things. He does not use the parts cannon method.
Love his work, thanks for showing us how to do things on cars. Great job.
😁🧔🤓💯🥇
If you own a GM truck with AFM and a 6 spd trans, there's a thing you can do to prevent or prolong your lifters from failing by preventing the AFM from being active. Always put your trans in the M postion so you can select how it shifts using the plus/ minus buttons on the shift lever. Set it so the display shows M5 and it will not allow for sixth gear while driving. The AFM only activates in sixth gear. You can verify this by watching one of the display modes where it shows that it always stays in V8 even cruising the highway. I actually found this info in the users manual of my 2011 Suburban. I'm at 258,000 miles on original engine. And yes, keep up with oil changes, duh....
I've watched several of your videos since I stumbled across one a couple of weeks ago. I truly appreciate the thoroughness and logic behind your troubleshhoting methods. Great explanations of what you're doing in every video really helps me follow along. I have learned a ton from you already. Thank you and keep the videos coming!!
ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC WORK ! ! !
It took a lot to get it running right, but you've given this engine many many more great miles ! ! !
This job is definitely "I love it when a plan comes together!"
I just hope the owner is more cautious about oil and oil filter changes by mileage and time.........seriously!
Fantastic video also. You continue to do, " If your gonna do the job, do it right the first time!"
Keep up the great work Eric!
As always your videos are great to watch, everything is spelled out, easy to follow and well edited. Keep up the good work!
This is the best how to video on CZcams imo. I just found your channel, liked, and subscribed. I learned from it, thoroughly enjoyed it, and very much appreciate you taking the time to make it. Happy New Year to you and yours. ✌🏻
Eric that was a lot of work. Great job, great video as usual. I love how you also show the issues like with the stuck lifter. Thanks for keeping it real & honest my friend.
Good job my man!
As a retired mechanic I really enjoyed your video. I miss working on vehicles but my hands just will not do what they once could.
Take care. And keep using that torque wrench.

impressive you'll never be out of work
Thanks for the great video. This proves to me Beyond the shadow of a doubt I don't want anything to do with a truck like this. I will stick with my truck That has a regular V8 engine with no sensors. This engine is totally unacceptable.
I loved your methods on this one and im glad the customer let you do the extra stuff while you were in there. The owner will be much happier with the truck now thanks to you.
Awesome video man !!! 👏🏼, I love how you went over the DOD/AFM delete and tune !!, this video is by far the best I have seen, thank you for taking the time to go over all the important details !!

Wow...Big job, many defects found. HV oil pump was a wise decision. You are a good man.....and GM savy.....
Absolute pleasure watching your videos. The moment I receive any notification from your channel, I just leave anything and click on the video to enjoy it.
In my world of DIY car repair, I've learned to pull off the front wheels to lower the engine bay. Try it next time you work on a truck. I always enjoy your content, especially the Vette that was rode hard. 👌
I just saw Wes from Watch Wes Work use an aluminum folding bench platform. It looked like 4 ft. long and about 12 inches high not sure. It looked very useful and had no tire removal.
I just pull the valve cores. Lowers most trucks enough for me.
Great tip, sometimes I also lift up the rear of a pickup, this help access the back part of the engine.
Ur awesome dude!!! Just came across ur videos... very informative and interesting to watch and learn... would like to pick ur brain a lil having trouble with a 2006 honda civic hybrid... u did a video a couple years ago of red battery light on and not hold a charge... ur helps would b greatly appreciated... thanks u...
Bravo nice job young man! I'm a young senior of 65 and a drag racer, I am impressed with your skills and the very nice work you have done.
Fast, professional job! There must be a close line between doing that much engine work Vs putting in a crate GM engine.
Pretty sure the stock crate engines are long gone. They were $9,999 back when they had them.
Amazing video! I feel like I understand how engines work so much better now! Thank you so much for sharing and for including all the detail you did. Very well done, super informative and entertaining at the same time. You have amazing talent to do all of this without even pulling the engine! Thanks again!
Super Professional Video. Great Mechanic. I wish you were my neighbor
Great mechanic work. Great photography. Great editing. Great explanations. Couldn't be better.
These type of videos of her people that actually understand what’s going on and not through the person that doesn’t know nothing about it and just start out
I hope you changed the oil pickup tube O ring while you were in there. One of the biggest problems with low oil pressure at start up. Also use a Napa Gold oil filter or a Wix (same filters) as the have the best anti drain back valve.
Should have replaced the screen below the oil pressure switch also another big issue with these engines.
First time watching your videos. I enjoyed every minute. I love how you make it look so easy. We know it's a labor of love and it's not always going to be so smooth. Good job and I hope to see more from you. 👍
Great video! As someone who has an '09 with the 5.3 and AFM this gave me a good insight as to what it takes to make a repair like this. Me personally though, I would just yank the motor and give it a full rebuild but it's understandable for someone not doing the work to not want to get into that territory.
You did a Great job finding the problem!!! I wish all mechanics were this thorough!!!!
Great job , your professionalism is what got my subscription. A true tech not just a parts hanger. BUT you also had the perfect customer to let you use quality parts and not cheap out!!
I felt your relief and excitement when it started and that oil pressure rise lol
Nice job !! It's always good when a project like that ends with everything working perfectly !! If the guy learns how to keep his oil clean he shouldn't have any more problems.
Great stuff here! Only thing I would have added was that AFM stands for Active Fuel Management, and DOD stands for Displacement on Demand. Makes it easier for lots of us amateurs to understand. Otherwise, nice job!👍👍👍
I got my 1st mechanic job in 1984. the best thing for these engines -while they're still in good shape, is to run a qt of Marvel Mystery Oil in the pan with your 5W/20. it's high in detergent and keeps oil orifices and galleys clean. people also use a qt of transmission fluid which works similarly. I run the Marvel. 135K, quiet as a mouse. I'll see 250 no problem. but that's me. 🏁you do you.
Excellent video, as always. I've lost count of how many DoD/AFM lifter and cam replacements I've done. It's really the one big trouble spot on these GM trucks besides the transmissions.
Just the 8 speed transmissions are an issue, the 10 speeds tend to do just fine.
@@En-Pea-Sea yeah, the 10 speed transmission seems to be holding up just fine. Hopefully they learned some things with all the previous transmissions they had.
What about the 6 speeds?
@@tipsreviews7476 If it is the Supermatic 6 speed that they started to put in GM trucks in 2005, it is better than the 8 speed for sure. You may want to add or upgrade the cooler though to extend its life. When taken care of they can run for quite some time.,
All the 6 speeds burn up the converter from 2,3,4,5,6 lockup habits, ends up blowing up the trans from metal contamination. Fresh converter and trans tune will fix that if you catch it before converter failure.
Always makes my morning when I get a notification that you posted a new video.
Very cool diagnosis and an even better repair, plus really glad the owner went with the AFM delete, because I think that'll add more life to that LS.
Thanks for the video!
You deserve many compliments for this video. I need to do this to my truck as it is to avoid the AFM, I must drive in tow mode and shift to Manual mode and I set it to 5th gear. If I go to sixth gear, the afm kicks back on. I do use more fuel with driving in tow mode all the time, but my truck is not constantly shifting up and down as I drive and I have power when I stomp on it. There is no hesitation (or searching for the right gear) like there is when not in this mode.
Man I watched this video a couple of times to make sure I didn't miss anything. Great job man! I'm about to do the lifters in mine now.
Holy Smokes Eric !!!! You work freaking fast man!!
You're amazing, skilled and knowledgeable mechanic!! Awesome job!!
This is AWESOME! Great , very informative video, step by step very instructive and detailed. You couldn't ask for any better from anyone. You truly knocked it out of the park my man, you're one of the best. I have the same problem going on with my 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche and I am going to go with the delete for the AFM / DOD kit. I agree it would be money well spent. Thanks, man, for a 100% absolutely well put together video that is definitely appreciated by this viewer. I am so glad I clicked on this one and it thumbs up all the way to you. EXCELLENT JOB AAA +++ !!!
Preach it brutha !!! Common issue with AFM engines. Best to change the cam to a NON AFM cam, the correct lifters and then take it to a tuner to delete the AFM in the PCM and then weld the hood closed. Good Job Dawg..Because of echo, it's hard to tell which side. Best to use a mechanics stethoscope on the valve cover, or even a broom handle if you want to redenck it and don't have a stethoscope.
Hey Eric you are incredibly awesome, I haven't seen anyone go into so much detail, explaining everything that your doing step by step, you sir were born with a special talent. I have the same motor with that crappy AFM system, great lesson and hope there's more to come, too bad you don't live in N.Y.

Great Job, Eric!! I enjoyed this video a lot ( I dont even own this engine). You are a great mechanic and teacher. Keep up the good work!
Nicely done Eric, great to see someone pay attention to the small details, like torque specs. One thing you really need is a topside creeper. Trust me, it changed my life! I’m not endorsing any brands here, but look into it, best investment I’ve made in my tool repertoire yet! Great job Eric!
Topside creeper??? Tell me
I'm a shade tree mechanic and have done all my repairs since I could drive now 38. I've always driven older vehicles and now own a new to me 2015 silverado i did buy a 3rd party 3yr warranty. But I hope I never have to do this job. This video gave me confidence I can do it if i really need to though. Having another vehicle to get back and forth to work is another issue.
We need more mechanics like you.
A complicated job with lots of oppourtunity for error if not done professionally. Clearly, you are a skilled professional.
I'm curious if GM offers any warranty coverage for this job? Mileage limit for warranty? What is the total service bill? And would it be a good idea to replace the whole engine? A common problem with an expensive repair makes me want to avoid variable displacement engines, and GM altogether.
Excellent video... As the owner (over time) of a 1999, 2002 [6.2L], 2009 and now a 2013 I try to learn as much as I can and have been able to do all the things repaired DIY with great success. Haven't had to go into the engine itself and pray I won't have to. I did wonder why you were deleting the Pressure Relief Valve. Great it you can explain this as I don't remember an explanation as to why. Thanks for doing an EXCELLENT video.
I had that noise in my Chevy Tahoe put seaform in it and it went away and never came back WoW 💪🏽💪🏽
Yes, that 5.3L engine has some issues. The oil pump on mine went out so I replaced it also. Not with a HV pump. It had about 80k miles on it. My son has it now. one big improvement I did was to purchase a dongle the plugs into the OBDII port. That disabled the 4/8 cylinder operation. After using it, the oil consumption went down and the engine run much better. He has put on 70,000 more miles on it and it still runs well. Oil changed every 5,000 mile.
Where did you purchase that from
@@rodrigorocha9752
mine is ranger it goes in the OBD port it something like $100.ooUSD that was afew years ago.
Mine is a Range Technology unit. Not cheap. I paid $190 for it in 2017. Well worth it in my opinion. There are some people that can disable it using a tuner.
What kind of oil pump did you put in it?
@@noe_9568 Melling. It was not the high volume unit. I believe my bypass valve stuck open. There are several videos on how to replace it w/o removing the oil pan. Two things I did was stuff a rag and magnet retrieving tool to catch the bolt if I dropped it. Also, a string was tied to the bolt while installing and removing it.
Great video. I hope this gives people an understanding of how much work us mechanics do. Also love the fact that no matter how good a tech is we all have that bubble guts feeling after every big repair. Then to hear that sweet engine sound. That feeling is amazing
Yup, I’m a Automotive tech of 21 years. I still to this day get that feeling in my stomach after a big repair or timing job no Matter the job I still get it. And if I know i 💯 did the job correctly before starting it.
On September 1st Just finished a timing chain kit and sprockets on a 2013 mini copper S. Chain was stretched and out time by about 8 teeth. I knew I did the job perfectly but still had that feeling when walking around to the drivers seat to turn that key.
Nice to watch a person who head is filled with data and hands which are skilled.
Just now found your channel. Very,Very, impressed with your work. Continue with the great work.
You own my full respect for the amount of work that have been put to remove all the parts and put them back as was originally or better. I hope the truck owner is rich to pay you at your experience level.
