    "Tool" recommendation: Hemostats. I liberated some from my wife who's in the medical field. You can get them at various sizes. Hooked or straight noses. They serve the dual purpose of getting into tight spaces where a needle nose can't and also lock onto an object without having to keep pinching the handles. An absolute must for "rocket surgery".

    Stuff like this is what separates real mechanics from those who only do simple things and pretend they know what they're doing. This is almost on the level of rebuilding the upper part of the engine. And you just know what each and every little part is and how everything works.
    That said, I saw a video earlier today on Car Wizard's channel, and this engine made his list of "engines to avoid at all costs" because of this exact issue. It's a serious design flaw, and every single one of these needs this done at some point.

The keepers won't leave you. 2. Drop the oil pan to do the oil pump! It takes all of the 5 mins and will save you a bunch of time. Also gives you the opportunity to scrape out any plasticy bits from the pick filter. Chances are there will be some if you are having to do this job. Otherwise, it's fairly easy

    • @StormsparkPegasus
      @StormsparkPegasus Před 2 lety +1

      Yep, electric motors only have 1 moving part. The stator just sits there. The rotor spins in response to a rotating magnetic field produced by the stator. Mine does have a pump, for lubrication of the gears that connect the motor to the wheels, and for cooling purposes too. But yeah there are very few moving parts in an electric engine in comparison.

    • @scipio7
      @scipio7 Před 2 lety +1

      I was thinking this same thing a few days ago. A hundred years ago when batteries were awful and electric motors had tolerance and bearing problems, it made sense to trade that off against a flathead gas motor that was just a crank, eight pistons and rods, a cam, sixteen simple sidevalves, a cooling circuit, a carburetor, a dizzy, and an oil pump. But then the complexity grew and grew until the timing assembly alone that Ray is working on is more complex than my imaginary flathead 8 cylinder.
      I worry about the future of mechanics like Ray a lot too, well, more younger guys like Peter. There will be a need for body shops, tires, brakes, and suspension work with electric cars, but heavy engine and transmission work will shrink as the proportion of piston engines on the road decreases.
      But smart people who work hard tend to make it, so Ray will. Change happens.

Do you think that it might have been an option to carefully rotate the crankshaft to bring the piston to about an inch btdc, so if the valve did drop, at least the piston would prevent the valve from disappearing into the gloom? This repair shows a sign of the times. A year ago, a vehicle that needed this kind of surgery was usually off to the junkyard because it really wasn’t worth the financial investment of fixing. Now that the price of vehicles has gone up and cars are worth more, repairs that would never have been done are more likely now.

    • @MickayG
      @MickayG Před 2 lety

      Not exactly... this one was caught just in time, so repair is still a viable option... this one was probably just a couple of miles of the mark to 'total destruction' which would've meant a complete engine rebuild or replacement.

      @mph5896 Před 2 lety

      That is a $3500-4000 repair in a shop. Original posters response was vehicle prices went up significantly so people are repairing stuff like this instead of trading it in or junking it. 5 years ago, I could buy 10 year old Expeditions for $3-4k. Now they are double that, so they get repaired.

    Ole Geezer Gearhead here again. MAN, that scared the Schnizzle out of me ! I own a '02' Ford e250, 3/4 ton van. with an untouched 5.4, TWO VALVE(thank Goodness). Which has 337,000 miles on the clock. I started rebuilding engines way back when 'plastigauge' was a new item, and STP was a new miracle oil additive, we thought! I have to hand it to you. when that valve keeper fell out, I held my breath. Ray, you are one of the most determined mechanics that I've ever watched work on modern stuff. My hat is off to you sir. Saving the day with that keeper rescue. Sorry for the long post. Please forgive an 80 yr old gear head.

    I have an E350 van that had the same engine with 117k miles that was having the same issues. I got it cheap because the previous owner did not want to pay the $$$$ to have this service done. I yanked the crappy 5.4 out (it got sold on Craigslist along with the original tranny) and dropped in a Cummins 24 valve with an Allison 6-speed transmission. Then I converted the van to 4WD with a kit from U-Joint Offroad. Been a great van ever since.

    couple of 5.4 quick tips, when using the valve compressor always press downward on the valve side of the rocker as you compress the spring. I evenly loosen the cams and slide out all of the followers at once. reinstallation is also made with cam raised and take my time retightening the cam. saves hours over using the spring compressor

    Yea I saw the possibility of the valve sticking when pushing down on just the valve spring. But I did not say anything.
    They make an adaptor to put compressor air into cylinder so you can replace valve stem seals without taking head off.
    I would have used that to hold up valve till I got the keepers back on. This would do a better job at holding the valve up.
    Good thing the keepers did not drop down into engine.
    Yes if I ever have to do such a job I think I would put rags into the oil return areas in the head to ensure the keepers do not fall in.
    Most definitely I would push on the top of valve stems with a wooden dowel rod to ensure the valve does not stick while the spring is being compressed.
    This video was definitely more educational.
    Thank you for the lesson from Ray university. Thank you professor Ray

    Gary from Australia here. When attempting to screw the oil pick up bolts into the oil fiter I used a piece of 0.7mm thick wire approximatey 200mm long and wrapped it around the top of the bolt thread twice then used the wire to guide the bolts into the holes. Then you start screwing the bolts in; the wire will hold it there in place and provide enough resistance for you to use a ring spanner to screw the bolt in almost all the way. Pull the wire off the bolt (it will come off easily because the wire is so thin) and then tension bolts.

    I have a 97 expedition with the 4.6 liter. It's close to the same wrenching on it as the 5.4 liter. I have right around 250.000 miles on it currently. I didn't change the oil for 110,000 miles and to add to it, it also had external head gasket leak and lower intake plenum leak and heater core plugged. I saw the video of the f150 you did the evap core and had to remove the dash and I had to laugh at my self because I still have screws that go to my dash idk where because I took everything apart. But I finally got around to fixing all the stuff under the hood even tho the cost was greater then the worth of the vehicle but it's the first ford I ever liked so it's sentimental. I just wanted to let you know I applaud your work and patience because I was dropping the f bomb and kick tires. Thanks for your videos and the efforts you put in to make sure us viewers can see what's going on.
