Customer of this repair here. Ray, I just wanted to publicly thank you for all of your hard work on giving this engine new life. I was seriously considering just scrapping it and cutting my losses but couldn't find a replacement for anywhere near the repair cost. Just know your work is greatly appreciated!
What was the repair cost if you don't mind?
Pretty nice to be able to watch a video of our own car being repaired, especially on such a big job like this. Ray did a nice job on it!
Would you mind providing a ball park figure of the cost of this repair?
Nice of you to thank him on line 😊
@@Gromitdog1 He might not answer. But, thats a $3500-4000 repair.
I'm so glad you didn't "escalate" with the hammer. Good decision to draw it in.
Someone send this man a damper install kit!! Love the ingenuity.
My heart stopped when ur tool broke! Have no fear, Ray always gets the job done!
Making Specialty Tools Is SOOO satisfying when they work !!!! Thanks for sharing….
Fine example of a hard-working American who takes pride in what they do! Great job, Ray, as always!
I've been doing my own car repairs since I was in high school. I just turned 67. I am always impressed by what you do and have learned so very much from watching your vids. Thank you. AA
Good isn’t he
same here , and I'm a year younger than you :)
Here's to us old farts who can still crawl under our cars! I'm 72 and still do most of my own work, just not in the winter anymore!
Yeah, vehicles have changed a little in the past 50 years, huh?
@@AJGreen-cn8kk same here, I still go after it on my car repairs, winter, not so much anymore. Laying on that cold concrete tears me up
Good thing the customer caught this. Otherwise it would have proved what FORD means "Found On Road Dead".
Good job Customer..... Good job Ray.
Rays not just a great mechanic he's also a great human being.
Even after a 3plus battery swap out day he returned to work and had a happy ending :) I love a good story!
I remember the engine swap video series you did -- I am sure you went through a few batteries making those videos.
Yea you know what I’m talking about Eric!
@@rainsmom7645 This is were all the Cool Kids hang out.
I just want to know what this Happy Ending at work, Eric is talking about?
Always great when Mr O visits the channel LOL
Its a bit late, but your bench is on fire!!!
My dad, and his 3 brothers, my brother, my two sons, and you are top notch mechanics! My dad over hauled many engines, and back in them days it was a come along that was used to hoist the engine out!! His oldest brother was a Mechanic in Alaska!! My two sons, my oldest has the Senior chief Mechanic title out of 248 people in the world!! My youngest son got his brains from my dads side for cars!! Very rare to find people who rate up with them!! You are DAM good at what you do and all the knowledge that you have about vehicles!! That to me rates you up with the best mechanics that ever lived!! That is one hell of a compliment!!
The dreaded attack of the cam phasers and guides. Glad to see your expertise kept this one around to fight another day.
Watched the entire 4 part epic cinematic presentation, my favorite part? The chipmunk 🐿 “click” on the passenger side. You should submit the the entire production for Oscar consideration, “Best Sound Editing”.
It was the chipmunk "doo-de-doo" that did it for me!
Ray washes the engine
My brain hears Ray say “REEEEEEE! You can’t do that!!!”
Yeah, my concern is the alternator, then I remember they're driven through minor flooding all the time and I stopped worryin'. :p
(@3:15) Your sparkly brilliance was just too great, good sir! We couldn’t see what was going on. On the positive side, our eyeballs were spared the damage from UV! 😆
The Rammstein soundtrack to welding. Love it.
No matter what you have done it is still a Ford!
🤣😂
I must admit I was a little concerned when I read the title of this last video. There is nothing like the trepidation that accompanies the first startup after a major repair. This was especially true with all of the gymnastics that you went through to get the job done. Sometimes it is easier to just pull the engine. Congrats on another successful repair..I really enjoyed the series. Good luck on getting your own shop, but remember; 4 o'clock is meaningless when it's your own business.
I love how you could hear some Rammstein in the background during welding. The perfect welding music.
Great job, Ray! It really llustrated the difference between a DIYer like me and a pro like you.
As for the special tool: it needed a deep V groove between the 2 bolts before welding. It probably would have been strong enough. Very good video!
I am impressed by your technical skills and memory in putting things back together. Really cool to listen to you as you talk yourself through an assignment. Like everyone else, would love to have you work on my car.
On the flip side, I would not trust your welding skills. It is more akin to Elmer's glue.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Indeed. You have to chamfer the ends of the bolts prior to welding to form a good bond.
"A grinder, and paint, make me the 'welder' I ain't"!
Iron man ! The ultimate endurance adventure by none other than Rainman. Good job sir !
K&N Intake sounds great I bet the customer is happy to have there vehicle back as well as it having a new Lease on life for that engine @Rainman Ray's Repairs
We finally get to see Peter. I was beginning to think he was like Charlie from Charlie’s Angels.
he's very camera shy tho!
He reminds me of a music rapper. Nice to finally put a face to a name 👍
Just as with any love story it ends happy ever after 😃. With all the dooo bee doos ,gravity and loud noises Ray keeps his head.
You can tell in the closing moments of vid 3 that Rays a happy man. Engine sounds great under acceleration, impressive.
Plus the acknowledgedment of the owner in the comments.
Think this is a first for Ray as l have not seen comments from other owners.
Wonderful series of vids Ray. Makes my day watching you at work. You could do with a week off after this one. Your back must be killing you.
Which just leaves me to remind you to have a great day 😃😃🇬🇷
You Inspire me every time I see your Mechanic Skills and the Patience you have while working on Difficult Problems in many Vehicles, I have a Tendency to throw wrenches--you are Calm, Cool and Collective on Camera-- I am sure that we All can Learn from your Practices...
Hears Rob Zombie in the background pictures Chucky waving his hand saying "That's more like it" 😂🤣😂 great video Ray love it
no matter how many jobs I do on a vehicle, I always cross my fingers when cranking it up...i know the feeling Ray
Same and its on something as simple as an oil change! As I am turning the key (or pressing the button in the newer shite) I'm hoping that the drain bolt is in and tight, oil filter on, etc.
On a job like this, I'd probably take a few hours before even thinking about letting it rip for the first time!
Lovely work, Ray! I was impressed that you didn't take the Ford engineers' names in vain, instead letting their design work speak for itself. A great example of "There's GOT to be a better way!"
I follow a lot of youtubers and you are gaining subs by leaps and bounds, I am so happy! You are a great person and maintainer!
There is nothing to make the heart race as a not quite right first start . Excellent work as always 👏
That was intense! Valve almost falling into the combustion chamber, and you saved it, performed a surgery with oil pickup tube successfully, and last but not least you made it run as designed. Thumbs up 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
First start after major work is always a bit nerve wracking for me, it's like my hearing gets super sensitive and picks up every little noise that was likely there before but didn't notice.
Well now I know I'm not the only one who is like a doctor doing surgery on his wife and finding out if she will come to.
Squatch 253 just finished rebuilding a D2 engine and the pony motor. He has spent months on this project, finding all the correct parts, machining the bearing boss on the pony motor and a bunch of other things. Anyway, just released the video of the first start of both the pony motor and then the Diesel. Two completely overhauled engines to start at the same time. Talk about nervous. Chech his channel out.
Ray, This series gets definately gets a thumbs up, infact it gets a DOUBLE thumbs up. Well done Ray and hope your ribs and belly are now bruise free!
Ray and Ford boss me are awesome dudes and top notch mechanics 👍
Huge job Ray! So happy it was a success. After that first start and rough idle and pop I got a little worried! But the hidden vacuum hose did the trick! Learned a couple of lessons with this series of videos, 1) You are a awesome mechanic!!! 2) To stay far away from the Ford 5.4 L 3-valve engines they are notorious for failing and so complex to repair. Not many mechanics can or will do such a through job as you. Looking forward to the next videos!
Where is the vacuum hidden hose at
love watching you dig into these repairs, and this one was one of the best.
I'm liking whoever has control of the radio today!
I like at the end where an ad for another video covered the speedo - just as you floored it 😁
Hello Ray Sir. When welding up the bolt you vee out the join before welding and build it up then you can grind it back and won’t have that issue. Don’t be afraid of turning up those amps or wire feed speed as well. Good to see some inginuity
Hey, he claims not to be a welder, don’t try to make him a real one. 😜
An alternative or addition to the V-groove would be to change over to GTAW, also called TIG. It provides different heat distribution - more heat to the work and less to the electrode, better penetration. Also less build-up -> less grinding.
@@philipershler420 I appreciate when people give me advice to make me better at my craft I wasn’t bringing him down I try to give my knowledge to others to help them be better in themselves maybe you should do the same for someone 😜
I would have just cut the heads off ground a 45 on both bolts and then welded
@@andieconcarnie I was joking about Ray. We weekend welders can use all the help we can get. Thanks
Love the longer series of videos, thanks for showing the details.
Nice Timing Job glad it's got a new life and was caught by the customer before catastrophic Devistation @Rainman Ray's Repairs
I started listening to Z105 on iHeart radio while watching your videos to make it feel like I am there in the shop looking over your shoulder while you work...lol
Hey Rainman, there are crank pulley installer kits available, US stock, on eBay, chaep and nasty but they do the job and ship within a day or two, multiple thread sizes and pitches, order a kit and put it in your toolbox for that time you need it.
Watch those things!
I had one snap off in the crank snout of my SBC.
No, i didn't over torque it.
Thank god it came out easy..
@@carwashadamcooper1538 yeh, they can be weak, the method I use is to get the harmonic balancer partially installed and then use the oe crank bolt to install the rest of the way.
I think it was hastings tool that had a good one. with a tool like that you would want a good one you could depend on so you dont get into to frustrating situations. I left mine in another shop because it had interchangeable thread pitch ends for different applications and some times after install it would unthread off the tool and i would have to fart around getting part of the tool out of the block. since then I believe they updated their tool because of this problem either way stick with a good brand name
Ray, as an old mechanic myself, I'm impressed by your skills. Thank you for these interesting videos on this vehicle. Sincerely, 'Ole Geezer Gearhead'.
Awesome work and running very smooth and quiet. You the man and hard to find someone like yourself anymore these days.
Watched from part one to 3. Damn so much work! Your patience is astounding. Really great work!
Having done that balancer install on this model motor, (2014) I can tell you a 30mm 1/2 drive impact socket and about 5 seconds with the air hammer on the face of the socket , slides it on more than half way and then the bolt snugs it the rest of the way. I mind F’d it for about 10 minutes before I did mine and after I decided to do it that way, it literally took 10 seconds . Other than that, great stuff man.
If you can get her straight yet shot at the face the other problem is have you ever broken a 7/16 off in a crank on a Chevrolet try getting that out with the grill in and a radiator and all that stuff it's a fun job use a left hand drill it'll spin it right out if it's broken have a good night
Thank you for doing this job. I have a 2013 Expedition with 170000 miles runs great. But it’s a job I’ll pay for it being done by a professional. My 70 Yeats of age doesn’t take the gyrations like you experienced anymore. Until next job, auf Wiedersehen!
Metallica playing while you weld. Heavy metal. Respect to you from UK 🇬🇧. Thanks.
A bit of oil on the exhaust manifold and a vacuum line off on a job of that magnitude, you're gold. Thanks for posting.
Hey Ray, that was quite a marathon you ran with this one. Always enjoy watching your videos to see the level of pride you take in your work. Also, it was really nice to see the customer's appreciation of your work as well. That has to make you feel really good!
It has to be an awesome feeling taking that truck for a ride after completing that repair, good job Ray!
Excellent job Ray I watch this whole series and you didn’t awesome job. I’ve been doing mechanical work since I was a kid with my dad and I appreciate all your comments and all your talking things through.
The little fire was funny. Most of my “special” tools are ghetto made and work great including the special tool that engineered and made them haha. Top work Ray ! Cheers
It is great seeing something like this being repaired (even nicer when someone else is doing the hard work!) 😄👍🏼
You've past 300K subs! Congrats!
Oh how I despise those engines! Sucks when they are in an SUV, and even worse in the vans. For the trucks, I remove the cab. Yeah, it takes a little bit of time, but saves time in the long run.
Excellent work as always, Ray! Have a great day! o7
Ray, your patience is astonishing.
Success!!!! You figured out how to make it work. That's when it gets fun! Good job Ray!
As always, entertaining, interesting and informative!! Always learn something in your videos. I saw the bolt twisting off coming. LOL!!! If you have to do that again, grind the bolts down to shaft size before welding. then put a bevel on each piece to form a "V" groove. This will allow more penetration when welding, the more V groove the better😁 Thanks again Ray for the great videos!!!
I'm impressed Ray,a difficult job really well done and a real pleasure to watch, thanks for the upload.
Nothing like a little Rammstein during a repair. Engel is a great song.
Choice of garage music is highly approved. 👌
Good job Ray. After doing a couple of these they get easier as any engine. In my opinion, I would rather have a solid 5.4 than the new 5.0. Bought my 04 F150 FX4 for 1500.00 and rebuilt it with new pistons and all and I have less than 5k in it compared to a new truck thats 50k+. I would rather have a rebuild I own than have an 8 year payment lol.
You ain't fooling no one bloke with that talk, those 3 valve 5.4 triton engines are one of the WORST engines ever made period! It doesn't matter what you have done to them, they are garbage and will not last 100,000 miles. Their design is so bad and the quality of materials used in the manufacture of these shitty engines should be considered a crime.
@@IDGAF56852 no ive seen em with more than 100k but they sound like theyre gonna blow up any second. Whenever i hear a ford running bad or one thats just kicked the bucket its almost always a 5.4 3 valve
@E Sanford16 yeah the odd block will get to and over 100k but very rare. They are a shithouse engine.
@badger jamees my 2006 E250 with the 5.4 still going strong 239k just do your oil changes on time.
@firulais that's good to hear, yep a lot of people just don't change oil enough.
This was a great series, your efforts in contortion to get to all those cam followers is truly impressive. Keep it up
and it's a good thing he replaced them. That's one of the things that could grenade those engines if they're not changed.. If a follower breaks it can lodge between the cam lobe and valve stem, holding the valve open a split second too long and bam!
I'm a mechanic.I can't imagine doing a job like this.Great Job!
Gary from Australia here. I own a 2005 5.4 litre BOSS 260kw quad overhead cams with 4 valves per cylinder Ford Falcon XR8. Correct we if I am wrong but my V8 is the same as fitted to some earlier Mustangs in the states. I have the chains and tensioners job myself after doing a lot of study and thank god my motor does not have cam phasers. The timing mark alignment scares a lot of people but it is not really that bad, and in regards to removing the followers I just clamped the camshafts with vice grips to stop them from moving. There are specific clamps you can buy for the job but vice grips will do it too. John Smith racing in America has a you tube channel and he gives a complete rundown on how to do the 32 valve quad cam. The BOSS 260 kw has nowhere near the issues that the 3 valve does. Car wizard hates the 3 valve and states they are one of the worst motors to own if you are not prepared to change the oil on a regular basis.
Beautiful work Ray 👍 Well done!
Excellent repair. You maintained your cool and got the job done 👍
Ray, your a great mechanic, and fixing this Found On Road Dead shows why you and I both drive GM trucks!
I do have one recommendation for when you are working in the type of cramped and stretched environment as you were in. If you hang your tongue out, preferably on the opposite side as you are straining, it really helps! Kind of puts the universe back into balance! Irregardless (hey it is in the dictionary now along with a whole bunch of other words we were taught weren’t words!) ain’t that grand!!
Great job! I love the fact that you don't skimp on the little things, like the drain plug that others might not replace. You briefly mentioned in passing that you probably should have pulled the engine. I wondered that as well. Would you do that if you got another one? I don't know what other issues you would run into pulling the engine. Hmm... Either way, terrific series and you may see me in the near future for a job (not so rigorous).
Great series, can say without any hesitation, a couple parts I felt the tension you were going through!
connecting that pickup tube and then installing the bolts.
Highly approve of the music choice in the garage today!
Nice job! Always feels good when they start and run as desired, especially when they don't at first and you quickly discover why and BINGO! All is good!
Love your work as always Ray. This was a good series. Just a thought for consideration when you need to weld something thick like that bolt turn the amps up a bit more to get better penetration buddy, your weld appeared to break because you'd not got into the core metal enough. Keep up the awesomeness.
The amperage wouldn't have been all that important if he had just chamfered the heads on the bolts.
You need to grind each bolt to a point(ish) so that you have a valley to weld them together or you will never get enough penetration.
Retired machinist and shade tree mechanic, I agree and would have cut off the head of the bottom bolt before chambering it for welding to the top bolt. Still Ray, got it done! Kudos!!
Yes I agree if this tool was to be used for many times, but just for this time it’ll do, & did work.
YEAHHHH...THAT IS RIGHT & WHATS MISSING...CORRECTO...NOW REMOVING MY COMMENT!!!! TY
Even just beveling the edges about 1/8th would be enough. You don't "need" a full penetration weld for a tool like that.
But he did get penetration and it worked for this one time use.
Great series Ray was very entertaining and I think it was super educational @Rainman Ray's Repairs
I approve of the background music choice for this video.
Ideally you would use a harmonic balancer pulley installer. Air hammer with light pressure will rattle it on. Controversial, yes.
Sometimes you have to go with the‘Whatever it Takes” !
You really should to vee out the weld joint, trust me im a keyboard welding expert
Great series of videos. Live confidently and peacefully
Thanks for doing this video. It was awesome. I'm happy that pros sometimes get as frustrated as I do doing these repairs
Remember when "The Car Wizard" said this couldn't be done, you have to replace the engine??
Me neither
I’ve heard about that and there’s some truth to it. It all depends on the scoring or damage that occurs at the camshaft journals. (These engines suffer from oiling problems at the top end) Many of the rebuilders won’t touch this engine bc of high failure rates. I also wanted to replace the long block assembly but there’s always cost to consider.
He likes to exaggerate (I'm being kind). He should lay off words like NEVER EVER. According him it's not a matter of IF something will fail but WHEN it will fail. Moving on...
The great thing about these high quality videos is that when the little ones get older, they can see pops work!
"So, that's why Daddy just sits in the garage clutching 10mm sockets saying 'Do-Da-Lee-Do-Da-Lee-Do'." 🤪
I heard the vacuum leak as soon as you started it up . Dam good job i did many of them jobs on the motor at the dealer were i worked
You did a dam good job my friend
Sam
This was an excellent series! I have a 09 F150 with this engine at 135,000 miles. I have been good about oil changes and mine runs quietly and has no rattle on start up. I always wondered what I would do if it needed this repair, this may be a bit beyond what my aging body and lack of agility can take! I learned a lot watching this and that's why I am here and keep coming back.
I really don't give a rip what Car Wizard says, I believe that if you get to the repair early on you can save the engine. Even putting a new engine in is a gamble, you could drive out of the shop and blow a transmission or some other major component. It's all a calculated risk, so choose wisely.
This customer is very lucky to have someone like you. All they went through now the issue is repaired by. We are all lucky to have mechanics like you. 👍👍
Ich Will playing while you weld up that bolt is perfect LOL
Love the music in the background ... Ramstein, Metalica, Godsmack and more!! 🤘🤘
Thanks for all the GREAT Video's you post!
Congratulations my friend you are a true Mcanic. That is what we call a good mechanic in Canada. Job well done.
Part Two was better {long } but the end result was good , Very Quiet & smooth too, Ray you saved it {5.4's have many issues! }.
H E N R Y F O R D
would shake your hand Ray!
so very well done!
This is LD's husband. I am amazed at how you don't get rattled, and you calmly figure out how to do the seemingly impossible. Welding those bolts together is genius! I have a past brother in law who was quite like you. Amazing
All 4 videos on a row. I don't know why but I've started picking up non working mowers and feel more confident after watching your videos. Even making some pocket change
Excellent series on this one vehicle. I'm thinking about picking up a Ford raptor with the same engine with the same issues. The owner told me he was quoted anywhere from 3 to 4,000 for repairs and he just isn't interested in spending that much money into his truck. He said that's the reason he's decided to sell it.
Since I do all my own work it's only going to cost me the price of the parts and a couple special tools that I don't have. Which honestly does not bother me to buy a tool that I need. My whole garage is filled with things that I've needed.
I most definitely going to reuse Ford parts. With all the searching I have done that's the one thing that everyone agrees on to use good parts not that cheap Amazon for eBay parts.
Out of all the videos I have watched of this repair yours was best illustrated to show what you were actually doing. I've been watching your videos for a very long time. I like learning different things when it comes to repairs. I'm not a professional mechanic I'm just somebody who's not afraid to get in there and get the job done.
As always I made sure to give you a big old thumbs up and I look over to watching your next videos.
I wish all shop guys were good as you and honest.
Super job again Ray. This one really show your superior skills. You would have been bored working on cars from the 60's. Now it takes a day to find the engine and a day to put everything back after rebuilding it. I'm not sure I could deal with all the junk but I'm glad we have people like you that will work on them.
