  • Dorico 5 introduces a new scrub playback feature that makes it easy to audition the whole ensemble or a single instrument at any point and move forwards or backwards through the playback at any speed. This is invaluable for checking harmonies, finding wrong notes, and focusing on specific moments in your music.
This video was updated to include new features added in Dorico 5.0.10, including showing the playhead while scrub playback is active, auditioning only selected staves, and using the arrow keys to move left and right through the music.
We hope you find this video entertaining and useful. If you like what you see, please leave a comment and tell us what you think. Thank you.

I can't describe to you how much I love this feature. I think it might be the most time-saving aspect of any notation software ever. 🙂

To be honest, it would have been wonderful if this feature had been introduced in the first version. This feature is both essential for composers. Steinberg moto is "Creativity first". So when selecting features, they should prioritize composers rather than just music engravers, shouldn't they?

I see the playback kind of snaps to the beats of the music, but could there be a toggle that also enables a more fluid, continuous scrubbing that works without snapping?

Wait ... the soloing of tracks and the keyboard commands, is that new?

There is no need for any feelings of guilt or betrayed loyalties (I'm not saying you have such feelings, only that it is an easy emotional trap to fall into.) Steinberg and MakeMusic have made their own choices, and they are moving in different directions. MakeMusic, since its acquisition, has been almost entirely focused on tools to help the teaching of music. That's perfectly valid, and some of their developments in that direction are very interesting. But they really aren't trying to serve the composer, arranger, or engraver in the same way that Dorico is committed. Personally, I found it beneficial to switch from Finale to Dorico a number of years ago. That required a few work-arounds, such as handling "second time only", but on balance, it worked well for me, and now is a no-brainer for the work I do. For others, there may still be reasons to stick with Finale.
