      It's like they didn't account for all the choices we as consumers have today: video games, streaming, old tv shows, old movies, youtube. Sure it's nice to go to the cinema and see a good movie, but given the prices of tickets now, it better be good - and if it's not, then we have other means of entertainment.

      The people in charge want the industry to crash. That's how the system works, ever since 2008.
      Investors demand constant growth, which is not sustainable. That growth doesn't need to be from profits because getting people to invest accomplishes the same thing. But eventually the bubble has to burst, and so long as the entire industry crashes, the execs can claim it wasn't their fault, keep their jobs, and probably get bonuses.
      And now that enough execs have realized this, any execs who focus on long-term, real profits over short-term, fake profits will be fired and replaced with one who will trick the investors, because all the other companies are tricking their investors, and it makes the companies that aren't look like they're failing. An industry crash is just a system reset to the execs, while falling behind their competitors means losing their jobs, or at least their bonuses.

    • @betunia98
      @betunia98 Před 2 měsíci +2

      @@Bacteriophagebs how many situations that is a terrible strategy this is one of them. The actors will use their willpower to keep movie, theaters, alive, and smaller studios, or somebody else for floor budgets that can make a profit from theaters will continue to go, and then eventually take over they will create their own competition. I noticed in the last few months Warner Bros. put almost an entire catalog on Netflix. When they need money these companies trying to crash the market will cave.

    • @Bacteriophagebs
      @Bacteriophagebs Před 2 měsíci +10

      @@betunia98 No, it's a perfectly sound strategy for the execs. All they care about are their jobs, and as long as all the major studios crash together, they'll all get to keep them. It's not like the studios will actually vanish, they'll just get bought or declare bankruptcy and just like with the banks in 2008, the companies will still have enough to pay their execs millions and millions of dollars, even if they have to lay off thousands of people to do it.
      You're right that it will be an opportunity for small studios and indie filmmakers, and the big studios will happily buy the successful ones in a few years as part of their rebuilding.
      The video game industry is headed the same way.

They did a pretty good job of staying in the shadows for a while too, but that could only last so long. I'm so glad the consumers have caught on to them, and thanks to how these "particular kinds of people" who work for/run these "particular kinds of companies" cope & seethe when things don't go their way/when their gift is brought out into the sunlight, they shifted the Streisand effect into full gear, and gave people *_even more_* reason to boycott them on top of that. "Blue hairs" always end up being their own worst enemy. Funny how that works out lol. SBI needs an example made out of them so that it's crystal clear to these studios, publishers, and their investors/shareholders that "DEI", "sensitivity reading" & rewriting of scripts, and everything else that SBI does, for that matter, is *not acceptable* in video games, and that going "that route" will cause a game to be a failure before it ever hits the shelves. We need to stay firm on this so that the shareholders get pissed enough that they force these corporations to fulfill their fiduciary duty, which would be kicking these extortionists, and their ideologies as a whole, to the curb.
      And the part about "their ideologies as a whole" is extremely important because we don't want these corporations to sneakily integrate their own little "SBI departments" into their gaming studios (which is no doubt already a thing), for SBI to silently rebrand, and for them and other extortionists like them to try harder to stay under the radar.
      So we *_definitely_* need to watch out for that kind of stuff, and sniff out the other extortionists that "offer" the same kind of "services" that SBI does.

      The worst part of it all is that it was entirely self inflicted. Hollywood could have kept the gravy train going for another century if they actually gave a shit about their customers, but they’ve done so much navel gazing that they believe their worldview is the only correct one. It has absolutely destroyed the general public’s trust in the institution and that’s something Hollywood will never recover from. Give it until the end of the decade at the latest before the industry completely collapses and names that were once thought to be immortal will be six feet under.

There's a lot of unspoken debts that are only starting to come due in the west such as the abysmal state of education, work ethics in younger generations, key skill shortages, plummeting marriage and birth rates, and widespread unchecked mental and moral issues, all of which will deal more damage to the economy, culture, and national development. Nobody is saying minorities don't deserve to jave stories told or that the general public minds seeing a diverse story that is reflective if society. However, forced diversity where it makes no sense is very distracting and just takes you right out of the story. Forcing people to watch something that we know can not be true just destroys the suspension of disbelief. I don't mind seeing gay people in stories for example but having gay people over represented in a story about the 1800s England just doesn't make sense and destroys a good story. I don't know why Hollywood can't seem to get out of their own way. When will it become rebellious to just give people what they want? I just watched the gentlemen on netflix for example and it was very entertaining. Good looking actors and a fast paced good story and I watched all of it in 2 days. Excellent observation. That is a common trait. The loudest people often have the least to say.
      Politics in Hollywood have been in a long time. Think about the films since the 30s, especially the films made in the 70s. Usually it was about politics with a big P. The lecture on how society should evolve was a such a bad misstep because we all live in it which means Hollywood was never going to make friends with that one.
      Society evolves. It cannot be forced. It cannot be lectured to.

    • @rwang1618
      @rwang1618 Před 2 měsíci +11

      @@AchtungEnglander I totally agreed! I think people tend to misunderstand the message of politics in movies vs. politics in lectures.
      Think about the alien movie. This is an excellent example of portraying a strong female lead and believe me, many young women in China were and still are empowered by the movie. It never said once in the movie "This is a strong female character so you should respect her."
      On the other hand, take Mulan remake for example. The original is held very dear as the second Disney movie ever to stir a huge audience (the first being lion king) in China. Now when people watch the remake, it feels terrible. The plot has no gravity, the character is bland and sometimes borderline stupid, the depiction of Chinese culture is off to the point of being comedic when it is not meant to. However, when Chinese complained about the lack of quality compared to the original, so many Hollywood actors/actress told us that "we are being brainwashed by CCP" or "Chinese are the wrong audience". We are not. If anyone would have seen on Bilibili (the Chinese youtube) the top comments, they are all about basic movie making, not fear mongering of American values.
      Thinking about the last example, it is actually a funny paradox because Hollywood seems to be fighting racism very seriously. Yet when other race, such as Chinese felt being discriminated, as being called brainwashed one of the worst insult I believe, we are actually told we are wrong.

    • @fearlesswee5036
      @fearlesswee5036 Před 2 měsíci +8

      @@AchtungEnglander Spot on. The key difference between hollywood before and hollywood now is back then the political messages worked around the story they wanted to tell, to enhance the message, or to provide a framework upon which the story may build. Nowadays it's backwards; the story yields for the political message, which doesn't even say why the political message is "right"; in the Alien franchise, it's political message is "unregulated corporations have no morals", and we are directly shown this by Weyland-Yutani's attempts to domesticate the alien, constantly resulting in the deaths of many, and often the kicking-off point for the plot of the film. We are shown Ripley naturally becoming a badass by overcoming the Alien, and not giving her unrealistic strength, or making all the male characters lobotomized so she seems competent and intelligent just by comparison. In the sequel, she's understandably traumatized by her encounter on the Nostromo, but through the film (and the desire to protect Newt as she was unable to do so for her own daughter) she overcomes this trauma naturally and realistically, and it all makes her believably a strong, heroic female lead.
      If the Alien movies were made today, they'd make Ripley stronger than all the male characters, make her act like a total jerk to them (but that good because she woman!), she overcomes the Aliens on literally her first attempt with absolutely no setback or issues whatsoever, she has an active insatiable (acid)-bloodlust to just destroy aliens at every turn no hesitation or fear, and then at a random point in the movie they'd say "capitalism has failed!" despite it never being *shown* why they think that. That, or they'd try to make the Alien the hero as a stupid "subversive" thing. (When every single movie does the same "subversion", it ceases to be a subversion because we come to expect it. At this point playing a trope straight is more subversive!)
      I think it's really telling that simple "popcorn entertainment" movies like Top Gun: Maverick and Oppenheimer/Barbie were smash hits. People just want fun entertainment, not a thinly-veiled propaganda film. This is a near-identical discussion around the "videogames have always been political!" spiel.

    In the last few years I saved a lot of money by not buying pop culture merch, not going to the cinema and not paying for online subscriptions... My life is actually better for it and I've even managed to buy a house and help many in need... It has been a win/win situation for me... Thank you HollyWeird, you did not disappoint!

      The way it will get worse is when the pendulum swings back the other way (as it is starting to now). The left likes to poison and ruin people, the right likes to use physical force and torture. If things swing back too far the other way, stuff is going to get real bad. Once it starts get to the extreme end, the right eats their own as well, so don't expect a utopia.
      The left movement got pretty far, and we saw how bad it could be. Now an age of conservatism is on the way.

    There is something interesting I observed in the german speaking regions.
    English films have fallen off a cliff and German produced films that only had a minority of the market share are now everywhere.
    Hollywood was never irreplaceable or unique.

      That's one of those "echo chamber" effects (you're only talking to people who care about German cinema). I've never heard of any German movie that's come out in the last 10 years that's even remotely interesting. The closest thing would be the show "Dark" and that was a tv show.

      There was also "1899", done by the same team behind "Dark".
