    The noise on startup is the valves rattling against the inside of the exhaust. We have an M4 with the MPE and it does the exact same thing (asked the dealer and thats what they told us). Kinda annoying cause you are right, its a weird sound to hear on strartup.

    Great video and review. Thank you for taking the time to help us future owners work out whether an exhaust is worthwhile. I'm still on the fence as I really want an exhaust that is not too loud with the valves closed so as to not irritate neighbours etc. Is the exhaust tame enough in comfort with flaps closed, I've heard conflicting opinions.

    • @justin.bergmann
      @justin.bergmann  Před 7 lety

      Javed Mower Thank you. This is a difficult question to answer because it’s very subjective. To me it is very nice and tame in comfort mode but my wife still thinks it’s loud, especially when I cold start it in the garage. You can drive it easy and it’s not too loud but still has a nice sound if you ask me. I do drive in sport+ a lot because it sounds so good but almost never with the valves wide open. Good luck!

    Well designed exhaust, especially if you install headers [ full exhaust system ] does increase a lot of power but exhaust systems are more like a multiplier of power. This means that apart of install only the full exhaust , it is far more better to change the ecu chip and install a high flow filter to gain many power. The gains can be well over 30 bhp especially on this car.

    • @justin.bergmann
      @justin.bergmann  Před 8 lety

      +TURBO CHARGER Yes, with additional mods there is power to be made. The downpipe alone is making decent gains I'm told.

    • @arnbon6241
      @arnbon6241 Před 8 lety

      My Garage Tv Sure , the factory leaves a lot for improvement. Those three parts that I mentioned gives a very decent increase in power without a big bugdet and does negligible harm to the engine.

    Despite watching your video (and a few others), I purchased the MPE for my M2. This morning, I experienced my first cold start. What a disaster. The rattling, shaking, and metallic noises made the car sound and feel cheap. I don't think there's any way I can live with it. I can see from some of the comments that there isn't a solution. Does it ever get better or am I simply doomed?
    By the way, great video. Thanks for doing it. Hoping that it was something as simple as ensuring that everything needed to tight in the install, I warned BMW service in advance about this issue. Didn't help.

    • @justin.bergmann
      @justin.bergmann  Před 7 lety +1

      Simon Jones Yes, slightly just under 3k. But I never drive in comfort mode! The sound is too good and even on the fwy, I much prefer the throttle response in Sport or S+ than comfort mode. Honestly, even on a long 6hr fwy drive I never once even noticed the drone. Only if I really look for it and even then, it’s very slight.

    Hmm. So it was just pointed out by a bimmerpost forum member that there are extra clamps that go around the end exhaust pipes, that I believe were added by BMW to address the rattle. I had the MPE installed June 2018 and I have them. I also see another video on youtube, uploaded Dec 3 2017, that has them. Maybe you can get them for your bmw dealer?

    • @justin.bergmann

      Sport and Sport + both change and increase the sound but the bluetooth controller opens the butterflies fully into track/race mode. Sport is louder and sport + adds more of the burbles. Everything is the same with the butterflies open except louder. There are a lot of combinations and possibilities. The sport/sport + also change the throttle response significantly. I prefer sport/sport + with the butterfly closed for most driving.

  • @bpc5896
    @bpc5896 Před 7 lety +1

    As a follow up to my previous post, I told BMW to either fix the rattle or put the stock exhaust back on. After several cold starts, I think they may have fixed my primary issue. Granted, the MPE still shutters on cold start but the intense vibration and rattle that permeated the car is gone. It's much improved and something I think I can live with. As I understand it, one of clamps or brackets was too close to the transmission case which caused the unpleasant metallic rattle. By repositioning that bracket they eliminated the interior rattle. Admittedly, I'm no mechanic, so if anyone is interested in more specific details, I would suggest contacting the shop foreman at Global Imports BMW in Atlanta. He can provide the specifics.

      This is a common issue. BMW will tell you it's "normal" for the bluetooth controller to turn off with RF interference. We've had our MPE system replaced completely and the second unit did the same thing. Don't waste your money.

    • @bpc5896
      @bpc5896 Před 6 lety

      Yeah, about a month ago the valves stated closing (from track mode) without any input from me on the controller. Took it back to BMW last week. They're clueless. They said they needed to check with the engineers in Germany. I will follow up with them this week. This issue, in combination with the cold start rattle, is too much. I will push them to refund the $ and put the stock exhaust back on. Then, I'll likely purchase the Dinan exhasut.

    Ok So I do not understand the Bluetooth part? Do the valves not fully open in sport plus like the factory setting? Or can you push this Bluetooth button and open in any mode? Also you said that you did not notice a power change. Does a factory M2 exhaust have resonators? Or is it a straight pipe to the the exhaust as well? Maybe this is why people usually get the power and sound kit together? Thanks for any help in answering my questions. 😊

    Hey! Great review cant wait to get my M2. I have a question regarding the exhaust and the bluetooth controller. So in my M235i I had the performance exhaust, but it never came with a controller. I could only "open" the valves if I want into sport mode. Is there a difference regarding the sound when you go into sport mode and if you just open the valves with the controller? or will it be just as loud.

    • @justin.bergmann
      @justin.bergmann  Před 8 lety +2

      GeNuiNe212 I also had an M235i with the MPE. On the M2 the MPE works exactly like the one on your car with the changes in sound in sport and sport plus. With the Bluetooth controller and opening the valves it makes sport and sport plus even louder. So you end up with 6 total sound positions instead of 3. Good luck with your M2 and thanks for watching!

    Great summary. I have the MPE installed on my M2 and also have the same vibration issues during cold start, and I've read similar complaints on Bimmerpost. If you track down the cause and solution, let us know.

      2016 M2 MG MT owner here, same issue for me with the MPE here except I got 4 Titanium tips, didn't go for carbon fiber ones. Taken it to the dealer and they say it's a loose bolt issue, with new bolts the ticking noise is gone during cold starts and exhaust actually has less of a drone around 3k rpm! Best MPE review I've seen anywhere BTW, awesome job!

      noiox8 This is encouraging! I was beginning to think I had to live with the vibration. Do you happen to remember which bolts were the problem? Thank you for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

      Hi noiox8, same here with the vibration. If you know which bolts were the problem please us know. I want to get rid of this as well. Also, did you try a cold start with open flaps? I think the vibration is less or I cannot hear it because it is just LOUD...

      I was able to get mine fixed under warranty at the dealer. It ended up much better, but not 100% without rattles. I’ve since sold the car so I don’t have any other info to give you. Best of luck.

      Amir Sadeghi Not if it’s installed properly. It never effected the drive on mine but after being adjusted by the dealer it has almost no vibration even during start up. At this point I would highly recommend it. Just make sure you test it after install. Congrats it’s an awesome car!

    • @H1delta
      @H1delta Před 8 lety +1

      I've owned over 50 cars in my life time & I know that factory installed options are better than when it's installed by the dealer. The few quirks you have on this car proves my point. I had the 30,000 mile service on my 2013 M3 a couple of months ago & I told the service writer that my front end was out of align. I got the car back & it stated on the WO that the alignment was fine. I knew better so when I bought new tires, I took it to an alignment specialist and their computer indicated all 4 wheels were out of align. My 2017 M2 is arriving in November & the first thing I'll do is have the alignment checked out at my expense. It'll be cheaper than having the tires wear out prematurely. Since it won't make it go faster, I'll stick with the stock exhaust & save $3k to $4k. Dealer mechanics are not nearly as good as factory mechanics, especially ///M mechanics.

    • @H1delta
      @H1delta Před 8 lety

      Also, why call it performance exhaust when it apparently does not increase the horsepower or make it go faster? They should call it louder sound exhaust because that's all it does. When I bought my 2013, I added the competition package which included dynamic damper control, 19" alloy Y-spoke wheels, and it also lowered the car. That was a $2,500 option and it was/is worth every penny and it was done at the factory. Mind you, I'm not complaining and I'm sure the M2 will be great when it arrives next month. But if you're going to label something "performance", make it perform.

      @justin.bergmann  Před 7 lety

      No, unfortunately I've found out it is a very common problem. As a matter of fact, it seems like everyone with this exhaust suffers from the same problem which leads me to question that its a problem with the overall design. I haven't found a solution yet but if I do I will make a follow up video of how to fix it. Thanks for watching!

    Exhaust should never be looked upon as a huge power upgrade, maybe 2hp at most and some weight reduction. Otherwise, the downpipes is where you get more hp. AWESOME CAR!!!
