    You know at the live shows I saw from ten to before binaural, Mike’s tone was essentially the same. But I was surprised at the first one after binaural it was super dark, and modulated, swirling around, very different. I was distracted by it at first. When they did “nothing as it seems” I stopped and listened, it was glorious. Ed wasn’t happy Ed yet, so along with my Vs concert, those have been my favorite of them all. I saw over the course of the shows I saw before ‘05 he seemed to change guitars more often. That dark spacey tone was different from all the others for sure. Awesome video man thanks a lot!

    • @LetsPlayAll
      @LetsPlayAll  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks Jason! I guess as they got more money they could afford to buy more guitars haha, but yea both Stone and Mike mixed up their gear loads after Ten/Vs. Loads of different amps and pedals too. Sounds like you've seen some awesome shows over the years!

    • @jasong546
      @jasong546 Před 5 lety

      Let's Play All yes, I had just joined the USAF a few months before Ten hit the shelves, and I didn’t see a show until 22 months later, because I was stationed in Frankfurt during that time. But when I got back they released Vs, and over the years since I got to see them for album tours and last was pj20. Point is yes, I am pleased I got to see them at several cool points of the years. I started playing in 99, and I don’t know why but I didn’t try too hard to learn their songs. But because of your work I got interested again and I appreciate your teaching their catalog in such an accessible way, I think we all do. I hope it keeps being fun for you and you will continue on with another band or style once you feel finished with pj. Maybe we will meet at a show someday...👍

    • @jasong546
      @jasong546 Před 5 lety

      Let's Play All and yes also, you are right about the gear, I bet that is exactly right. At the binaural era show I mentioned, that was the first time I saw Ed with Hiwatt amps and he played a les Paul for at least a song. I don’t think I had seen Mike play a tele until then either. When I saw them a couple years later, Ed moved to having those tweed amps behind him but I can’t remember Mike, because he changed from song to song so much. Honestly, when I heard that set up I was thinking it sounded much better than the dark and ragged sound of the binaural show. They seem to have stuck with that ever since, I think anyway. I know you are right, because yes, Mike bought the 59 Les Paul, and a guy has to save up for one of those for awhile!

    • @LetsPlayAll
      @LetsPlayAll  Před 5 lety

      @@jasong546 Yea that 59 Les Paul purchase turned out to be quite the shrewd investment! It must have gone up by at least 10 times what he paid for it back then. Stone's the same, he used to play lots of vintage gear but seems to have settled for 4 or 5 core guitars now. Also there's practical reasons behind that, they're tunes are in various tunings and it's way quicker to swap guitars than to retune them. We do the same when I'm playing with Pearl Jamm (tribute band i play in) - I always have a spare guitar tuned to open D for Even Flow, Leash, Go etc as it's way quicker to switch out a guitar in between songs :-)

  • @graffitifoxes
    @graffitifoxes Před 3 lety +1

    Great video again. Quick question: Does Mike’s solo sound have a lot more gain than Stone do you think, or is he just stomping on a Tubescreamer? I followed your lead and got an SL Drive, which really does make a monster of a Stone sound, but it maybe sounds like it’s lacking something for lead. Does that sound familiar, or I am imagining it?

    • @LetsPlayAll
      @LetsPlayAll  Před 3 lety +2

      Graffiti Foxes back on this album it would have been a cranked Marshall with a tube screamer to push the amp into more dirt, I always pair the SL drive with my Tumnus (or a TS or similar will do the job!) to thicken the sound up. Or just get a higher gain pedal, I’m using the Friedman BE-OD for Mike’s lead tones recently. It also depends on the type of amp you have so best that in mind as they’ll react differently depending how they’re voiced, my amp is a fairly clean pedal platform affair. Hope that helps!

    Man killer video 🤙🏼 Mike is my guitar hero! Question? I have been researching like crazy, but can’t find anything online on Mikes blonde or banana strat with a maple neck he used in the good ole days in the early 90s mainly the 92 year like in Pinkpop and other videos. I want to build a guitar just like that what would you recommend to get that sound what pick ups would you recommend? I don’t think he used that blonde one on “Ten” I don’t see him use it after the 92-93 year. Idk what happened to it. But man That’s my dream guitar the relic look and vintage sound. Any advice?

    • @LetsPlayAll
      @LetsPlayAll  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks Ernest! I don't know anything about that strat tbh mate, but as long as you have a 5 way selector most strat pickups will get you there! Bareknuckle are very good as are Seymour Duncans but it depends on your budget, but i couldn't advise on any particular sets as i've always gone with stock pups! Good luck with the guitar build!

    • @LetsPlayAll
      @LetsPlayAll  Před 3 lety

      Hey Chris! Thanks so much for the kind words! Yup you could absolutely use a tube screamer in place of a Tumnus. As for amps it depends on budget really. I went for a clean pedal platform amp in the Victory V40 so I could then use pedals to get as many tones as possible. But it also depends on your useage, how loud you need it, do you need headphones, will you record with it etc etc!

    • @johanneschristopherstahle3395
      @johanneschristopherstahle3395 Před 5 měsíci

      Well actually you don't need that much money to get great tones. Modelers have improved so much. As long as you get a good clean/edge of breakup tone you should be good to go to build from there. For drive sounds I prefer analog pedals. You can get a tube screamer clone for 20-30 bucks and then you will need some kind of Marshall in a pedal, wich should not be too hard to find. Modulation and delay + reverb should be fine when using a digital unit. Wah can be tricky digital. Some units are not smooth enough when sweeping. I got a used Cry Baby like 25 years ago and it still works fine.

      I find I can get pretty good ten tones from my katana, but granted I’m also using an SL Drive and a TS9 (or TS808 sometimes). I keep the base tone on the katana fairly standard American cleans and let the SL and the TS do most of the shaping, but you can also get pretty good results running the brown setting. If you hook up to a computer you can get download great cranked Marshall tones and use the katana program on the computer to throw an overdrive in front of it.

    • @marki7661
      @marki7661 Před 3 lety +2

      As they’ve always switched their gear up constantly, I do believe mostly during 91 and 92,, mike was using a JCM 900, sometimes an 800 for dirt and a fender tweed baseman and or tweed twins for cleaner tones, using a ernie ball pan pedal to control the mix beteeen the two and a TS9. Later he switched to a 1966 50 watt plexi and added a matchless HC-20 head as well and used the bassman as his tech’s monitor off stage
      Stone often ran a 900 as well, and also some times a 800 for dirty tones and I think possibly an early 70s silver face Twin reverb for cleans, and used the Ibanez sonic distortion pedal among others. Also using the Earnie ball volume/pan pedal to control the mix between clean and dirty. I’ve always wanted to pick up a volume/pan pedal and try that out with my rig, seems like such a good idea for my “rock” rig...I’m using a 72 twin reverb for clean and an older 50 watt Marshall 1987X for dirt...then there’s the dual rectifier and 4x12 for the more metal stuff...and then there’s my pride and joy, a 1963 brown face Princeton amp for the apartment...12 watts still too loud tho...Stays on 1.5 at the most lol

    Hmm, all due respect the Black tone you have doesn't sound much like the Lo-fi tone Mike plays in the intro. Sorry, don't think you got that one right.

      Well I’d use the term loosely but if you got something from it then I’ll take that haha. I wouldn’t call myself a natural teacher just someone who shares a passion for music tbh!

    That sound you do every 13 seconds with your mouth is annoying man, you need to control it! Guitar lesson is good tho.
