Nice lesson. Tim Palmer says that the solo was done in one take but that he did try a composite before Mike nailed it. “Palmer did, however, make a few additions, such as finishing up the closing guitar solo to “Alive.” “We set Mike McCready up to record in the control room,” Palmer remembers. “His amp was in the live room. He did a couple of passes at the solo and I put together a composite for him.” At this point Palmer was satisfied with the solo; McCready-who described the part to Gilbert in Guitar School as “Ace Frehley’s solo from ‘She,’ which was copied from Robby Krieger’s solo in the Doors’ ‘Five to One’ ”-was not. “He had another go at it,” Palmer says, “and got it right away. There was no piecing together to do; it was one take.””

I tell you what... maybe you know this, the Rearviewmirror Album version of Alive is a newer mix of the original Ten album song that gets clearer both guitars and it sounds fantastic. That was the song that help me to play that hidden solo better, but your video is more accurate
Been waiting for this one sir!! I listened to Alive for weeks on end and more so when you revealed that there was a hidden solo and I still couldn't find it!! Today you've allowed me to stop losing sleep lol. Great video my good man.

So glad you did this video. I struggled with that part for so many years until someone posted the isolated tracks. It makes sense they did the solo in so many takes. That entire part was like a ghost solo no one could figure out. The tab book had a section that never sounded right to me and when I played the song live I just improved that whole part so it was always different, but I’m like a robot with a lot of covers and this is one song I wanted spot on so it drove me nuts.

Interesting video. I've actually never thought of this solo as being hidden or hard to hear. It's actually been my favorite solo out of all of Mike McCready's solos, which is why this video caught my attention. If I recall correctly, I remember reading a Guitar World article a long time ago that interviewed McCready and he said that he copied part of the solo from the song "She" by Kiss to make the solo for this song, "Alive".

I read in hustler that he played it on a toothbrush given to him by layne staley..well,glad someone got some use outta it! (Just a joke love both bands)✌
I wouldn't class that as hidden, it's low in the mix but I've always heard it on the track...but saying that I have this album on continuously in my car lol
If you listen to the track at around 1:18 on the album, as Vedder says "hey I" mike's guitar gives of a strange harmonic sound...but you really have to listen out for it :)
Quite a few don't know this but the album version's first part of the solo for Alive was lifted from the Doors' "Five to One".
He actually said he lifted it from Ace Frehley's solo in She, which was lifted from Five to One

Let's Play All yes it is! You just don’t see that very much. Is it a special run or something? I have a book called “The Stratocaster Chronicles” with a lot of great large photos of custom colors from way back, and I think they should really start offering some of them again. Custom colors, that actually weren’t custom as we think of, they were production colors. Anyway, you have a unique one and it sounds great too!

Great video. Although I think Mike is a fantastic guitar player, I've never really liked the solo on Alive. It sounds a bit dull and random almost, maybe that's to do with how they recorded it. I'm not sure if it is double tracked on the record or not but it doesn't seem to have the same power or intensity as what you'd expect.

What guitar is that ?
Howzit from South Africa! Question, for us mere mortals who work for a humble living and can't afford to buy 15 guitars with 28 various effects modules and 8 different amplifiers - is there any one guitar or perhaps a combo that I could save for, that would give me the same-ish sound and tone as Pearl Jam? I'm 42 and don't have anything but a cheap box guitar but I would die to know what playing on an actual guitar and amp would sound like. Maybe something to work towards in the next 10 years? Thanks.
Phree Wil good question mate! You can get modelling practise amps that are pretty inexpensive to get the ten tone (at least the distorted tone), and if you can only stretch to one guitar I’d say go with a Strat. They’re so flexible tone wise and you can get a lot of decent guitars for very little money nowadays. Chapman do some awesome guitars that second hand are absolute bargains. I’ll be doing a ten tones on a budget vid very soon 🤘

@@LetsPlayAll Went to a massive store on Saturday and things fell into perspective a little more. A small Squire Fender is about R3k and a small amp around R2k, totalling R5k for an entry level setup. I only had R1k so I got a Ukulele instead.. will have some fun with that while I shop around and save up for the electric stuff. Thanks for the advice though!
