  • Here's a showcase of my favourite riffs from Pearl Jam's "Vitalogy" album!
    If you're wondering how i worked out the weighting for the writing credits collaboration bar chart, then wonder no more! Here's what i did;
    I basically assigned points to each band member based on their musical songwriting contribution. So 1 point for a sole writer, 1/2 a point to each if the tune was written by 2 people, 1/3 each for 3 writers and 1/5th of a point (or 0.2 if you prefer decimal) if the entire band was credited.

    Probably my favorite series on CZcams now, keep it up man. With Pearl Jam being my favorite band, it's really cool to take a chronological journey through each of their songs and learn who plays what part. Although their first 3 records are undoubtedly their best, I really look forward to getting into the rest of their catalog as your series continues.

    This was my first CD ever and easily one of my favorite PJ albums just because of the rawness of it! Awesome job playing through all of these great riffs! One thing about "Satan's Bed"... For that main/verse rhythm riff, I think the open D string is played together with that 4th fret C# note on the A string. It gives it that "nasty" dissonance with those 2 notes rubbing against each other that sounds like what's on the recording!

    Vitalogy will always be an interesting one. I remember being in two minds at the time about it. Loving the straight up songs on there-they were like broodier, darker, older brothers of Vs. But the experimental songs always have split my opinions. I was 15 when it was released,and didnt like Aye Danivita, or especially Bugs. But the overall darkness and eeriness about the whole album- even the shinier songs like Nothingman-had a haunting hue hanging over it. It was only a few months after Kurt Cobain's death,which had a massive impact on me. I remember wondering how much of Kurt's passing had shadowed over Vitalogy's morbid, eerie modes and tones at the time. Some years later, the more experimental stuff on there appealed a bit more to me. It added to the unsettling, moodiness of the album. It reminded me of something from a David Lynch movie- off setting, surreal and weirdly contagious. But then, when the Lost Dogs album hit, and I heard the songs from this era that could have been on Vitalogy, I felt that Vitalogy itself could have been better had they went with the other songs from Lost Dogs instead of Bug, Pry To. It would absolutely still have maintained that unnerving darkness regardless of the surreal experimental songs being replaced.
    Ill say this all the same- Stupid Mop is still to this day, one of the scariest things Ive heard. The unyielding tension and horror from those repeating vocal samples, the discordant music relentlessly sounding like a lucid nightmare. Again, it reminds me of a David Lynch style psychological horror movie. I remember listening to that with headphones for the first time, after school. I was in the house alone at the time,and when Stupid Mop grinded to its end,I was almost scared shiteless to leave my room,convinced somebody was in the house!

      @LetsPlayAll  Před 4 lety

      kylereece1979 wow that’s a great post, thanks for sharing and I totally agree on “mop”! 😀 I remember buying Vitalogy the day it came out and how I felt listening to it the first time. I was initially feeling a bit cheated as I’d heard several of the songs on bootlegs but I still loved it. Last Exit was the most memorable in first listen, Ed’s vocal riffs and the main gtr parts...just sublime! Stay tuned, “All The Riffs” coming for this one soon!

    • @kylereece1979
      @kylereece1979 Před 4 lety

      @@LetsPlayAll Thanks or replying! I too heard a good bit of the album 'fore its release,from the radio station playing the more immediate tracks off it in the week leadin' up to its release. I ask myself things when listening to it since. Was the inclusion of the experimental songs a reaction to the dark place they were in, following Kurt's passing,and the huuuge rush of fame they had so suddenly? Or,was Eddie's rising prominence in the main songwriting department at the time influencing things a lot more, inwhich his more odd Odysseys into music was taking them into a more deliberate tangent from straight up kick ass rock music.
      Im still in two minds over it. Sometimes I think that the odd, surreal delves they took on Vitalogy compliment and companion the rest of the songs,making the whole package sound like a soundtrack album. But when I listen to the songs left off the record from this era I think, "Man, these should have been on Vitalogy instead of Bug, Pry To and Aye Danavita. Like I said, the overall tone of the album is shadowed in woe, isolation and grief- least to me. It would still have sounded awesomely dark were the other songs on there. One more thing- I was a massive Mike McCredy fan,and his lack of white hot solos on Vitalogy were missed. Id love some of the firey leadwork like say, "Go" and "Animal" more on the album.
      If they wanted to breakaway from the MTVs and just focus on touring , the mantle was lapped up at the same time by Stone Temple Pilots. I think "Purple" is an absolute classic from that year,and I listen to it much more than Vitalogy over the years. Another great record that filled in the gaps that Pearl Jam removed themselves from was Live's "Throwing Copper". When these albums came my way- plus I became obsessed with the Smashing Pumpkins - Vitalogy's weirder side was off my radar for a good while.
      It definitely paved ways for where they were gonna go regarding bowing outta the bright white limelight for the next while. And at the same time, it was those changes that I think kept them going to this very day, where they are in a very good place indeed!

(I realise this might be a big question with a lengthy answer haha) I've been seriously considering buying the V40 lately and just wondering what your experience has been like. Seems very versatile and all the tones from clean to high gain sound amazing. I've noticed that depending which pedals you run, it can go from fender cleans to Marshall crunchy overdrive, would that be a result of the amp voicing or more the pedals you're using? I use it with a two notes captor for recording silently at home, they have a wall of sound plugin that’s great and you can use victory amp sims too (only £10). Brilliant pedal platform and has decent reverb built in too. The Marshall ish and fender ish voices are nice to have too but the only thing I would say is I never used the amp on its own, for me it tends to need a pedal into it even for cleanish stuff to my ears. As Vedder’s writing increases, the quality decreases. Ten is by far their best work: written mainly by Stone & Jeff.

    I swear this album is naff compared to Ten and Vs?! There’s so much garbage and dreary bits in many songs, corduroy probably my fave.
