One of the most impressive things to watch a guitar player do is switch effortlessly between rhythm and lead guitar. In this video, I'll show you how to start playing solos, riffs, and licks in the gaps between your guitar chords. There are a thousand different ways to approach this topic, but here, we'll be making use of the chord roadmaps that you should be familiar with from other videos of mine. I'll even show you how to connect your minor pentatonic scale to your bar chords so you can start using a basic scale shape to improvise with as well!
If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments below. Thanks for watching!

Honestly one of the best guitar teachers out there. Kudos to you.
@@Zok1990 Thank you! đ
@@andrewclarkeguitar We all have to thank you! đđ€
Awesome man! Somehow I now bring it all together in my mind! Thanks!!!
Iâd love to see you extend this in a few directions. One being open string ideas. Another would be something like triplet based runs on the turnaround.
Even âWhat not to doâ. Or âWhen to use chord connectors and fillsâ. So the singer doesnât turn around and tell you to stfu with your guitar ha.
Love the content!
I think you've broken some sort of unwritten rule for youtube guitar teachers. This is the first video I've seen that breaks down solo'ing in this way, and it really simplifies the whole concept of where the pentatonic shapes fit. Thank you, thank you, and thank you
I really appreciate that! I'm so glad everything is making sense. Most things are really so much simpler than they seem :)
đ„đ„đ„đ„
Couldn't agree more.
Lol yeah I'd say so... he might be hunted down now
Or on the guitar teachers most wanted list
BEGINNERS!!! Take note, this man will take you from knowing a few chords, to playing something resembling music! Check out his lessons.
Thanks again Andrew
đđ
I'm 26 and I played guitar a bit in high school. Pulled it out of the closet a few weeks ago and decided to start spending some time everyday playing. You my good sir... awesome at teaching. Thanks for making videos and I hope your channel grows massively
Appreciate that. I'm glad you found the video helpful!
Kudos man. Ive been stuck with my guitar learning as it faced a roadblock after learning certain things . This unlocked a new level and now I can have fun playing around with notes. Great lesson. Keep making content like this more often.
Awesome! Thank you for watching :)
You are a passionate guitar player and instructor. Thank you for all the time you put into making these videos.
Thank you so much for watching my videos :)
I have a new favorite teacher. Been studying this for months. You present differently than anyone and it makes so much sense!! Thank you!!
Excellent lesson for those of us with the theory who are trying to implement in practise
đ
This is the best guitar tutorial i have ever come accross on youtube
I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
I've been playing for about 5 years and I always hated guitar tutorials on youtube. Always felt like they were never as focused or catered to a beginner who wants to improve. Your videos are by far the most quality tutorials I've ever watched. I hope you grow further!
Great lesson đ so much to practice and a framework for expansion- BRAVO â€
These two videos you've done on this subject have really helped me to make basic chord progressions just sound so much better and more interesting even though I'm still just keeping it super simple. As always I really appreciate you taking the time to make these videos with such an easy to understand method as well as you stating how important it is to start slowly and to re-watch videos to cement the theory and ideas into memory. Thanks!
Wow, just wow! Thank you so much for your videos! Even though I've been a musician for my whole life, I've started learning guitar very recently. You have a real talent for teaching so that everything suddenly seams very comprehensible. The structures you teach us just make sense. What I also appreciate is that you have no hidden secrets unlike many guitar youtubers who just show you part of the problem without getting into any depth, leaving you confused and manipulating you into buying their guitar course...
I would buy a course where you go in depth about licks and riffs tbh, this is so helpful
Great video. I hope you continue this series. This makes more sense than other soloing videos I have seen plus it gives great rhythm guitar tips.
AMAZING video. Finally someone explaining the concept behind it and not just giving random lick to try to plug somewhere. Thank you for that
That's the goal! Glad you like it. :)
Great video sir, thank you!
My pleasure!
Awesome tutorial! (Awesome tone by the way!!!)
Thanks a lot đ
It's incredible how I've heard this information so many times, but you are the first person who puts it into order and explains it in a way that makes so much sense.
Youre such a good teacher, thank you so much I've made a huge jump in my understanding now thanks to you and I have a clear idea of what to practice and more importantly how to practice!
Thank you soo much for that video! Helped a lot
Glad it helped!
Andrew I'm on my knees. Thank you from the bottom of my heart
You're very welcome âș
Hey Andrew, this was a terrific video with lots of great insight. I especially like that you're teaching a concept that can broadly applied to many musical contexts rather than specific licks for specific uses. Great explanation and very clear communication :)
That's the goal! I'm glad you liked it. Cheers :)
I can't believe I'm learning all this at last! Andrew you are the best teacher I've ever had
Thank you! I'm glad you're digging the videos :)
actually a hero. somehow the video i needed to see always shows up and from your channel. this is guitar teaching that is practical not a bunch of pretentious gatekeeping nonsense.
So glad you find the videos helpful!
Yes, I like it very much ti have this "base run" and "licks" between chords. Thank you very much. Cheers from Indonesia.
Thanks for watching!
This was great! Thank you for all the helpful content Andrew!
Youâre welcome! Happy to help đ
Dude this is scary how great your lessons are bro đ©đ„ Ive been playing well noodling for almost 4 years with jazz. My theory is trash but I solo from using the melodies and mix the melody around. This was the first lesson from atleast 3,000 videos ive seen and this is the first one that clicked within the first 8 mins
That's so great to hear. I really appreciate that đ
Hey, I really enjoyed this. You have asmooth approach, not too fast not too slow and verrry easy to understand. I will be returning to this mannny times. I am now subscribed an looking forward to more of your material. đđđđ

Thank you.....that helped me quite a bit. Now I must practice, practice

My pleasure!
Andrew, great stuff... You really help me put the pieces together, making sense of all the music theory so I can actually apply it, and its fun! Thanks for the great instructions and efforts..
Great to hear!
Can you post up how to connect chords with riffs, and licks in major and minor? Also the 3 minor scales? That would be really great, to finally understand the whole system. I liked where you were going at the end of the video, could you show us from beginner, all the way up to advanced, on how to do this? Thanks!
Love It! Just what I was looking for. Would be very happy to see more đ
Awesome, thank you!
Been excited for this one. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Yesss!! Nice đ please continue this to expand how to visualize more shapes and also what best to play for the various chords 1 to 6 in a key!
You got it!
I ran across your video for the first time, and I have to say. You are great methodician! Thanks.I play guitar for hobby, now and then..I like to understand, what I' am doing, and why. You explain so much, and you have the talent, not to complicate it. So it's simple and..really helps. Keep up good work.
Really appreciate that. Thank you đ
This is a game changer for me. I cannot thank you enough. Liked and subscribed.
I'm so happy to hear that! Appreciate it :)
Your videos are so well explained, thay are helping me alot. Keep up the great work bro

That's so great to hear! Thanks for watching :)
dude, I love this stuff
For years I havenât understood what I can use scales for so I never really played them. These lessons feel like a great balance between theory and application for someone like me that will only learn something if the end result is clear.
Finding that balance has been my main goal for these videos. Thanks a lot for watching :)
Wow this video is amazing! Definitely going to rewatch it a couple of times to get the best understanding.
Glad it was helpful!
Very crucial topic you picked in thank you for sharing your knowledge with us it helped me alot
Glad you liked it đđ»

this dude is 1 in million teachers. I used to go on CZcams videos and get frustrated because I could not understand. but for the case of this man here I understand every thing to core. Yes, could give us Moree please about licks and riffs. God bless your work

That's awesome! I'm glad you're liking the videos!
YES. I noticed all the other ones teach bits and pieces, that are not connected to an actual system to use. I want an actual system to understand and use. Thanks.
Thanks so much for demystifying improvisation. Looking forward to applying this in my practice routine
You're welcome. Good luck!
Okay, I need private one-on-one lessons from this guy!đ
Great lesson, thank you. A springboard into many hours of enjoyable noodling.

Thank you! I appreciate you. đ
This is an awesome video! For a beginner, I can see them being able to ENJOY playing the guitar and making music. As an advanced player, it is a great way to think about the fret board for inspiration.
Thank you for making this video!
Thank you so much! Appreciate that, my friend đ
Thank you for all your help. Your videos are very helpful. Thank you for responding.
You're very welcome!
There are tons of videoâs on youtube on how to use and remember special shapes and formulas that supposedly simplify improvisation so you donât need to understand the complex theory behind it but you do an incredible job of breaking down and simplifying the theory so it is understandable and easy to use.
That's my goal! I'm pumped that you like it. Cheers đ
What a great lesson!! Thank you....
Youâre very welcome âșïž
Thanks for this! Youâre an incredible teacher
You're welcome! Thank you very much :)

Just found your channel via this video. Great lesson! Iâd love a whole series on this topic with some more advanced concepts.

Fucking phenomenal, this is the missing link Iâve been looking for forever
Amazing! So glad it helped :)
That's sounds amazing =)
Amazing videos!! I can play some riffs in few box positions but always struggled to land on the root chords. I will practice what you have shown in first half. Looking for few videos like this. Again, thank you so much. đđ»
Awesome! I'll definitely expand some more on this in future videos. I appreciate you watcing :)
Another class video đ
Thank you đ
BRILLIANT! Thanks
You're welcome!
I think the most important thing, to jumping off into soloing, that absolutely no one talks about is to get out of the habit of strumming - that is the biggest roadblock mentally that does not allow us to solo
We are too caught up strumming and can't break off; the trick is to do just one strum to set up the chord and set off
Good point!
For strumming, it's a rhythm thing, which one of the component that I lack. The other component is listening, especially when playing with others. I'm classically trained because of piano, so I follow exactly what's on the the sheet music. I've learn now to listen and improvise as I go along with other musicians.
Your guitar skills are absolutely amazing! đžđ
sending you my support #AndrewClarke! â€
Thank you đ
Very grateful. Thank you!
You're very welcome!
Excellent, well played
Glad you liked it!
I started improving myself since I saw your videos thanks
I know Im gonna repeat myself but even though it's in English I don't know why , you're making a good job keep it on
Amazing Video đ, I was literally seeing hundreds of video on improvising but this just the best of all. I find ur teaching way to be natural and I'm wondering y ur channel doesn't have many millions of views!!!
So glad you found it helpful! I appreciate that đ
It's CZcams algorithm. I didn't discover Art of Guitar until 2 years ago. I found this video thanks to the algorithm.
Very Insightful as usual
Thank you!
Awesome! Would be cool to see the same concepts applied to different styles of music.. to expand our horizons even further.
Great suggestion!
