- The parkade across from my apartment has been broadcasting this, 24/7 for over a month now in Downtown Vancouver. Could you imagine a city where this is allowed and mulitple properties in a block all broadcast this sound?
I want to start a go-fund-me campaign. Buy POS cars and install the Mosquito devices and park them in front of the homes of the owners of WestPark! If this is legal, than that should be legal too!

Boom! The local news picked up the story after I posted in the Vancouver subreddit. My complaint along with the news enquires prompted the city to send an inspector down today. I just watched the news and in the report they said the city contacted them, and has ordered the property owner to shut off the alarm! We did it! :)

Seems like a few CBC articles are already up on this and the City has recieved complaints. The only thing to do is to pile on the complaints. My suggestion: write a generic letter with the discomfort and send one for EVERYDAY the alarms is on, just change de date.
Get a few other residents to do the same and the City will have to make a move...

I dont agree with the use of this device but its not the building owners responsibility to deal with the homeless people. Im a property manager in Auckland City NZ and we have a huge problem with the homeless. We have had to install fences, cameras, even water sprinklers to deter them. This may seem inhumane but it is completely necessary as they often do drugs and leave awful messes for us or our tenants to clean up in the morning. Obviously this just moves the problem down the road but what else can we do about it?
I think you're missing the point of my comment. Im not judging anyone. My point is that the homeless people are a problem for property owners (this is just a fact) and its not the property owners responsibility to take care of them. Its the local council or govts job.

Who would ever think that this would be a good idea?? WTF!! It's so crazy! I just don't understand how some people can be so dumb, I'd rather have 100 homeless people on my block than have that awful noise. Whatever happened to helping reduce homelessness by creating affordable housing, menial labor type jobs and programs to help rehabilitate the homeless into being contributing individuals? Have we really gotten to the point where someone just says F it let's just make an annoying sound until they leave and that actually gets approved and implemented?

But seriously pushing homeless to another area just makes things worse, we have millions of empty homes all over the world just sitting there empty because people want to charge 10x what they need for rent.

As a sufferer of tinitus, I have this in both ears 24/7 anyways.. now you know what it's like :P But yeah, that's disgusting that they're using basically a psychological weapon against homeless people...

One of the houses on the road I live on have a higher pitch one of these to keep kids from hanging around there. Because its higher pitch younger people can hear it and adults can't. I absolutely hate walking past that place

Abbotsford has had one of these at the 7 Oaks Mall parking garage for years. It's so loud that it hurts my ears when I walk on the public street nearby.

They had the same alarms in the UK a few years ago to stop youths loitering, people protested, went all the way to the European court and it was ruled as discrimination and made illegal.

Max Welch well I do have the homeless on my road as it goes.. in fact a young woman froze to death on my road in wsm UK just over Christmas ... Which is apparently a time of giving etc. I think it's due to a bunch of bastards running the country for the few, while we roam the world like the west is the best. Personally I agree that a society that can be proud of itself looks after the most vunerable... Imagine this... Being able to say that your nation is so established and so decent that these people are not homeless to begin with... When properties are empty all over the country.

Funny thing is I live behind a car cleaning company and at this moment I can not hear the sound in this video because of the high pitched and annoying vacuums of the car cleaners. And I'm certainly not going to don the headphones to listen to another annoying sound because I can't hear it because of the annoying sound I normally hear... I'll just believe you. Cheers.

Local schools in Vancouver started using these in various locations after hours to dissuade people from hanging around. So annoying.
This sound is also used to keep most birds away from a certain area. They are used at air force basic training to keep our marching area clean from bird poop.
That would blow my mind if I had to listen to that!

Get a petition started and get as MANY people as possible to sign it and get that trash piece of a device removed!!! This is one of the most hideous things if ever heard of to "Deter Homeless People"!!! People are straight up INHUMAN!!!!

I'm partially deaf and can't hear it without headphones. That short bit inside the parking garage though.. My eye starts twitching instantly.. i wouldn't be able to stand there for very long.. Build or buy a suitcase size boombox full of tweeters and go sit in their lobby for a day. :D

You should do the go fund me page for legal counsel and petition the local government to implement either regulations or straight up ban these devices. If they are already illegal then seek damages from the guilty parties.

Funny fact, I had an anti-mosquito device that did the same and gave it to my mom. She left it on her desk after a while and the thing was on. Every time I visited my parents, I could hear the noise. I was annoyed but couldn’t locate it. My parents couldn’t heard a thing.
My guess on this noise is that it is not going to be effective on older homeless people. The owner of that place should be fined for disturbing the whole neighbourhood.

I dont know for sure, but this could be put in place during the winter to push people to go to shelters instead of outside, so they get proper heat and food
Call the cops. Report a noise complaint. This constitutes a public disturbance under the Vancouver munipal code.

Brad, I have seen one of those at work and in an entrance at some building too, they usually go off only when the door is open or there is some motion near them. Might be malfunctioning? It should also be governed under noise pollution in local law after 11pm; I'd try calling by law first with a formal complaint. Hopefully that will work. If not start a petition at the entrance in your building...
