Okay. It’s pretty apparent I haven’t cared about this channel for a long time. I’m sorry for the people who enjoyed it, but I lost the passion for it. So I want to be clear, I’m not posting this for likes and followers. I really don’t care if people smash the like and subscribe button, so it’s weird to ask for this to be shared. I don’t care if you share the whole thing. Just skip to 3:06 and share that little clip. This is a weird position to be in to be honest. To not use this for fame, which I don’t care about and use it for awareness without pissing off people who have supported me. Hope that makes sense?
A large region of British Columbia is suffering. This area has been devastated by fires, wiping out entire towns last summer, and now once in 200 year level floods. The world media isn’t talking about this, our governments seem flat footed, but the BC General Aviation community is stepping up.
I’m going to cut and paste my post from Instagram because I have a lot going on right now, but basically, people need help!
Shaun Heaps, @west_coast_pilot on Instagram is an absolute legend. I know this video will reach people who have no idea what British Columbia, Canada is up against right now, so here is the situation…
Last week, we were hit by the equivalent of over a month of rain in just 24 hours. An Atmospheric River with warm temperatures that melted several feet of fresh snow at the same time. All of that water hit land absolutely devastated by forest fires last summer. Land that used to absorb water, and now repels it.
The resulting floods destroyed highways, rail lines, power lines. It damaged critical infrastructure like pipelines. It flooded farm lands and destroyed our dairy industries…
Now, Vancouver, a region home to millions of people is (was) completely cutoff from the rest of Canada. Every road route to or from was damaged. Some so severe they will take months for just temporary fixes. Others have been completely destroyed.
The region is facing food shortages and the government has implemented fuel rations, which backfired and caused panic buying.
Our ports are congested because rail isn’t running, so bringing in more supplies is difficult.
Some communities are evacuated and others are completely cut off from re-supply. To make matters worse, these are areas that get cold. Really cold and winter is setting in.
So that is a quick overview, because I know most of the world has no idea. Hell, most of Vancouver still has no idea. It’s surreal how normal life feels Downtown with so many people suffering and losing everything just half an hour down on a flooded highway away.
So, needlessly to say, people need help. And that’s where people like @west_coast_pilot and @turbolyft have been stepping up!
This week, British Columbia’s General aviation community stepped up in a massive way! Shaun organized 30,000lbs of food and supplies delivered to his hangar in Langley. Then organized 24 private planes to ferry supplies to Merritt. He organized volunteers to unload the planes to get them quickly turned around for more loads, and even a local Sikh Temple to help pay the pilots fuel receipts!
Then, he organized helicopters to ferry those supplies directly to communities cutoff and needing aid.
Industry is starting to help Shaun. Telus dropped off Satellite phone to be distributed to communities and Native bands that have no communication.
But more is needed. Roads that have been recently reopened have been getting hit with additional slides and re-cut off. I was supposed to be delivering supplies right now, but my Igntion Box failed this morning. Volunteers are still needed. Helicopters are needed. We haven’t even hit the rainiest months yet.
People are dying. My buddy was scheduled to fly in a daughter concerned about her mother with failing health. As he was waiting for her to arrive, she was late. The pilot called the daughter and she was pulled over on the side of the road in hysterics. Her mother had just passed.
I’ve compiled some GOFUNDME’S from farms I’ve visited. I’ve stood where their land was. I can verify these are real and they really need our help. I will add more to the list as I verify that they really need assistance. Some of these people are facing paying a mortgage for the rest of their life to the bank on a property they cannot access and who’s land has been washed away down a river. Their vehicles are stranded on a highway that doesn’t exist. Because they are not actually damaged, Insurance won’t cover them because the car is fine. Just stranded.
The world needs to hear about this. Our famous sons and daughters from this Province need to speak up. Ryan Reynolds, Seth Rogan, Pamela Anderson, David Foster, Michael Buble, Steve Nash etc.
Tweet them. Instagram them. Ask them if they know what’s going on instead of asking for a selfie if you see them.
I gotta stop writing now. Text limit reached.

Okay, I know that was all doom and gloom... It was difficult to write. It's weird being a guy and being totally okay until you have to talk about it, or write it out. Good and pushing them down, but bad at talking about it. Need lots of long pauses when I talk about the stories of people that I've met.
But good things are happening. I've never seen so many peices of heavy equipment in my life. I swear, I didn't know there was that much in this part of the world. Things are happening from industry. The Canadian Military is finally on the ground and deploying. Independent animal groups are airlifting animals in partnership with helicopter companies. For example, the Horse Counsil of British Columbia has already moved several horses, goats, ponies and chickens out of that valley I showed. Including that cow from the video. We flew over as they were rigging her up, on the way to drop supplies at the Nicomen Nation.
The breach in the dyke (levy) has been fixed. Now it's being built wider and taller. One of the pipelines should be back on line early next week, so hopefully diesel will start flowing to keep machinery running.
But it's just so much, in so many areas that are mountianous and cold... But it's happening.

I appreciate that! But honestly, Shaun Heaps needs to be on Ellen when when this is all said and done. Dude is honestly killing it. The world needs the knowledge of how to do what he has done. The General Aviation world needs this template for disasters around the world. This is as grass roots as it gets and it's an honour to be a part of it.

    Nice new bird!
You inspired me to want to become a Heli pilot years ago, and this is exactly the kind of thing that I hope to someday be contributing my efforts towards!
Now I'm almost there, having just done my 4th solo yesterday...
Only a few flight left until my final check ride, although the weather has been so bad the last few months it's taking a lot longer than I anticipated...
    Soon though!!!
So glad you and the rest of the community up there are so helpful and I can't wait to join you someday!

I belong to the Rotary Club of Steveston and we have worked extensively with the First Nations for a number of years with our Write to Read Literacy program and most recently with Wildfire Relief for Lytton and various First Nations in the area. If you need any help connecting with these First Nations, please let me know as our Rotary Club is very well connected. Keep up the great work!

Again, Shaun Heaps needs the credit, but thank you. I'm just glad I'm in a position to help. Getting this machine right when I got it is a blessing. I probably would have been dead on Sunday if I was flying the R44. Was at 7000', clear blue skys and zero wind. Allan was flying, and I said, "wild, look at the wind up a head, ripping the snow off the peaks..."
WHAM! I actually flailed and grabbed the "holy sh!t handle beside me". We were expecting 30kt gusts up ahead, but this was over 50kts. Probably would have ripped the rotor head off the 44.
