    The guy showed you the 2018 Update Bat Up RC (or Complete set #698) and described it as the Series 2 SP... the Series 2 was the Bat-Down.
    Don’t think he knows his Acuna Rookies.

    • @brandonedwards8124
      @brandonedwards8124 Před 4 lety +5

      Glad someone else caught this cause he said the holiday was same as the update which it’s the Series 2 SP...”Topps shop of the year in the heart of Atlanta telling investors about Acuna rookies and completely mixing stuff up”

    • @michaelderyder426
      @michaelderyder426 Před 4 lety +3

      I think it was an honest mistake. He felt genuine and reasonably knowledgeable. Im a pretty serious collector but mostly hoops and fball. I still spend a few grand a year on baseball, especially when its a strong year like 2018 and 19. I took quite a bit from this. Good episode and I'm sure they will get even better.

    • @brandonedwards8124
      @brandonedwards8124 Před 4 lety +1

      Michael Deryder i would think that on normal circumstances but it’s concerning when that misconception has been through the hobby of what set the bat down was really in, and the fact he showed a set variation saying it was the update rookie. He’s a shop owner and in Atlanta he should be the most knowledgeable of anyone on Acuna rookies especially in the last couple weeks. This channel can be informative but I also question a lot of things with it. Anyway mistakes happen, but the entire hobby has been confused by the Acuna Topps rookies and even more added confusion isn’t good for those that may watch these videos to try and learn, not to mention on eBay so many people list the set variation as the update rookie to try and lure a bigger sell price, this can mislead many people trying to get in on Acunas and buying a lesser valued card for a more premium price

    • @kyleb1037
      @kyleb1037 Před 4 lety

      Brandon Edwards this is what I was trying to get at with comment. Also a few other things I could take issue with on what the shop owner was portraying regarding Bowman and sought after rookies... but it would get out of hand mentioning it all.

    • @brandonedwards8124
      @brandonedwards8124 Před 4 lety +2

      Kyle Beecker yes I’m the same way and I knew exactly what your comment was about as soon as I seen it I told my wife he’s mixing all this up!
      For reference if anyone reads these comments, the bat down is a series 2 SP, there’s a card with the same photo with snowflakes from 2018 holiday mega boxes, then there’s metallic versions of the snowflake as well as gold metallic which is 1/1.
      The update Acuna (bat up) is the “base” update card, they used this exact same photo in the complete sets as card # 698 EXCEPT the Topps logo and the RC logo are on opposite sides of the cards. The set variation has the logos on the right of the card and is numbered 698 with Series 2 underneath it. The update card has the logos on the left side of the card and will say update underneath the card number which is US250.
      There is a SP in update as well which Acuna in a blue and red shirt, this is also card number US250 to further the confusion there are TWO more ssp variations of US250 one of him batting in a white jersey and another of him near the dugout in a white jersey with his glove.
      Again there are also colored parallels etc that are numbered, the rainbow foils which are unnumbered etc. but please pay attention when buying as the bat down is obvious the snowflakes aren’t the SP. and that card is in series 2 packs not update packs. The update has 2 that look exactly the same so if buying on eBay and you want the update make sure the logos are on the left and the back says update series and is card number US250!
      Hope this helps anyone who is confused and reads this and I may possibly be missing some but this can clarify most of the confusion lol

      Not the best cards to appreciate. People like plastic material cards like Topps Chrome, Bowman Chrome, Topps Finest, etc. Yeah they cost more than Gypsy and A&G but they also appreciate faster.
      If Chrome and Finest is too expensive, just buy what you like as a collector as long as you don't extend yourself. Most people will never make real money investing in cards (most lose money) so it's actually smart to not invest/speculate on cards

    For someone like myself who has been collecting for 40 years+, and remembers the junk wax era debacle, it is great to see the hobby once again growing and getting recognition. I hope the card companies learned their lesson and never again mass produce cards for the sake of greed. I would love to see fewer products so the companies could spend more time innovating and curing their checklists.

Starting to think gimmicks like diamonds, pearls, parallels, and sticker autos have become the card compaines modern expensive junk wax and don't get me started on redemptions that expire in a couple of years after release. I guess we will find out in 20 years.

    For one, the acuna bat down came out in tops series 2 as a super short print. It did not come out in update. And when talking boxes. Topps update comes in the following. Retail: Feeder packs ($2.99), fat packs $4.99, hanger boxes 9.99 (he said 36 cards - which is completely wrong) comes with 60+. Blaster boxes ($20) retail boxes (24 packs) typically $60. Then hobby and jumbo (hta). Primary differences vary but for example 2018 update. SSP were limited to hobby only. Black parralells limited to hobby and jumbo only. Acetate limited to hobby only. All information you can find on cardboard connections but just wanted to clarify since he isn’t giving proper information

    • @fastfootedone
      @fastfootedone Před 4 lety

      My main surprise was how he got the Acuna so wrong. The bat down, as you said, is only a short print from series 2 or in the holiday, but in that it's just a regular print rookie. The bat up he showed was obviously the regular rookie issue in Update. Someone in the "Know" also told me that 2019 Sr 2 was shorter printed this year than Update, so it may be an excellent product to put aside, with Jimenez, Tatis, Alonso etc

    Geoff - I have a question and would love a reply/ maybe even a video on it?
    I am 40. Started back in the hobby 3 months ago after being like many of us 1989 to 1993.
    Grading is a new world - so I have been learning.
    My understanding is the following.
    1. Grade for Grade, PSA>BGS unless BGS is Black Label.
    2. PSA is worth more than a BGS grade.
    3. Yet, many feel a BGS 9.5 is that of a PSA 10.
    I just picked up a 2013 Bowman Chrome Carlos Correa Refractor /499 Auto. It’s a BGS 9.5 with 2 sub 10s on corners and centering, a 9.5 edges and 9 surface. I paid $228.
    Yet, the same card has an ASK well into 4 figures as a PSA 10 - and is POP 11 at that grade.
    So why not crack that BGS case, submit to PSA get back what is likely a 10 (subjective I know) and $$$, in theory.
    Am I missing something?
    As an investment banker that loves analytical work, buy low sell high and collecting - this is a lot of fun and I can really relate to your thought process. Thanks.

    My concern is card collecting was something we did as kids, now that I'm older and have money I buy expensive cards from my youth, the ones I could not afford like Jordan and Gretzky rookies two cards I put serious cash into this decade. The issue I have when I go to card shows or card shops is all I see are older men like me buying ridiculous priced special and hobby break boxes now. When I talk to my son and his friends they don't even watch baseball never mind collect baseball cards. Better hope us old men keep buying cards from each other in 20 or 30 years because this generation could care less about sports cards or even the sports like how i grew up. I often wonder if I would have watched as much sports or collected cards if I had internet, iPads, ps4, you tube, esports, mobile phone games, Instagram ... i seriously doubt i would be spending mid size car money on pieces of cardboard or acitate 20 years later.

      Thats a good point

    • @jamessorge3197
      @jamessorge3197 Před 4 lety

      I think i currently agree about this generation and I think it's mostly the older Generations 30s-60s that are moving this market and showing new interest and now that many of them may have money to come into it and actually complete sets and get cards they wanted, where they didn't have that extra money when they were younger so fell out of it, also that they remember loving it as kids but grew up realizing the cards weren't worth much because of the over production and supply exceeding the demand... but now that the companies learned from it and are creating intentional scarcity and the grading system is around it's all coming together to give new life to the hobby and market from an investing standpoint... finite commodities are always good ways of storing value and profiting... I think as long as the manufactured scarcity remains it's going to be a good investment..
      As for the kids, I think that comes down to the parents in their 20's and 30's now, I think with their renewed interest in it, it will begin to carry over to the kids... as they grow into their teens and early twenties and in ten years from now I think it will be a different situation with a new, much larger generation coming into the market and hobby and changing the dynamics again. Also crating more demand, which is my concern that the companies will get greedy and start flooding the supplies again. If they don't and stay the course, people getting in now or that were already collecting and trading, will all be doing very well in a few years and decades time financially from their card investing.
      That's my two cents
