Thank you for being honest! A large part of me wanted to get into football collecting for both investing and fun. Now I know for me, buying a couple slabs of players I enjoy and love watching grow probably is more my speed.
Best advice i could give is don't invest!! collect cards for the fun of it. I've been in the card business since 1989 and i just collect and have fun with it. Don't invest or you could end up like them Andrew Luck investing guys who are probably in a van down by the river somewhere.

For real, I get to be able to collect my favorite vintage football players from yesteryear. Especially my favorite running backs and wide receivers, since their prices are a lot more cheaper than quarterbacks from back in the day.

Just getting into this after collecting Pokemon for quite some time. There is so much to learn here. Starting with all that variations from Prizm and what color of parallels to Select to Donruss or whatever lol. Thanks for sharing all this info, really nice style of explaining.

Football is very popular ,the thing is baseball and basketball seasons last way longer and have a lot more games,You can pretty much turn on a tv any night and watch a basketball or mlb game it seems like so I don't get into them until the playoffs start ,football I watch the whole season .
Geoff - as a UF Alum...we salute you! Stay positive, test negative! A lot of insight. Card prices have sky-rocketed in the last 5 years. What advice do you give for RC and RY year cards? Should you focus only on one versus the other? Thanks in advance for your reply, and really enjoy your commentary and knowledge.

Good episode, really enjoyed it. I've been a little more selective in buying football cards though......highly speculative. I lost a ton of $$$$ on the 2015 football class.
The good news is that if you like players other than the QB you can get them for a great price!! I got a Bruce Smith RC for 5 $ ! 🤠

The best channel in my eyes
Seems like we put more importance on names like PSA and BGS instead of the card itself, which doesn't sound right to me. Are we collecting our favorite teams/players, or are we collecting slabs with a brand name? I know that's a touchy topic for collectors, but if a card's worth is dependent upon getting a grade of 8 or higher from a specific company, then that seems like a flawed system. I know some cards, for example Justin Herbert's RPA /99 from NT still has value, but the prices of 10's and 9's across companies varies too much. A PSA and BGS 10 could be 1.5-2x the value of an SGC card, but why? If Fanatics decided to put out a set with ONLY graded cards graded by Fanatics themselves, then what would the hobby do? Would they break those open and get them re-graded to try to get a higher profit just because it doesn't say PSA or BGS?
I guess my issue isn't with grading, but with people's biases and overreliance on specific companies. Yes, it makes sense to prefer Panini over Leaf because of licensing and quality, but it doesn't make sense to idolize grading companies when they all perform the same tasks and give you the same result (an encased card within a slab that has a custom information sticker and a determined grade). Being around longer means nothing, as long as the quality is there. Ignoring prices being cheaper, I'm guessing that's why some collector's have used SGC, GMA, CSG, etc. Because the quality and guarantees still exist.
Good information - would like to see a hockey video from yourself and some tips to what cards should be invested in. Canada has a big market in that card industry.

I’m very new to the hobby and the info for hockey cards is a little harder to find. But you could even save this for a video during the sports off season but please do one nonetheless. Hockey's probably the easiest...Gretzky, Lemieux, Orr, and Howe for retired players. Crosby and Ovechkin for modern. McDavid for modern as well if you want to add more risk to your speculation. Between the 60s and 80s you have Topps and O-Pee-Chee as the main card manufactures (same card - Topps released in USA and OPC in Canada). OPC is more sought after. Post 80s Upper Deck was and is still the main manufacturer. This is just a very high level overview
Have an RG3 rookie card and I was so happy when I pulled it just for his career to go downhill

I’m a big fan of your channel and what you do for the community, however I think that being more honest about what’s going on in the hobby can be helpful as well. If you only talk about the good things it can be misleading, you rarely talk about how much things have declined or the last news in the hobby. People taking psa’s at card shows, the controversial Logan Paul situation since it was certified by the bball exchange which you have endorsed in the past. Instead you make videos of how well vintage cards are doing instead of modern, you handpick 5 cards going up instead of the 5000 that went down. I think that talking about this can be learning lessons as well if your teaching about the hobby

bro I 100% agree with you but these contact creators are about themselves and building a brand they don’t talk about the bad the only true people that do that are “collectors” not investors and have been around the hobby for 20+ years not these I collected as a kid now I’m back

Jamal Lewis cards were the most valuable of the 2000 Bowman set. I bought 5 boxes for those cards. Ended up with 10 Tom Brady rookies because of it. I sold most of them for $45 on eBay after he won his first super bowl unfortunately. And I was like who is Tom Brady?

When the 2021 panini absolute football hobby boxes came out I would buy 2 every weekend for retail price an some times more when I could afford it I got almost 30 still sealed never opened any of them but 1 an got a gold kaboom lawrence I think that was a good investment

@@rivory13 to be honest I had no idea that the Lawrence card i pulled was that rare until yesterday.. A dude was gonna pay me 1500 for the raw card but I'm glad he backed out the deal I didn't wanna tell him no after I already gave him a price.. But yes sir I've got every box except 2 for retail price

The sports card investor app trending list is full of low end overpopulated base, I think it sends the wrong message to newer members of the hobby as we all know and preach “don’t buy base and high pop cards” which I believe to be very true. Base serves it’s role but is likely not the greatest sports card investment choice. Collectors want to see trending cards of parallels and higher end sets on there.
1989 score football was never junk wax.. never over produced. Somone go find a box unopened..and compare vs other box qtys

I think football cards should be much more popular than what they are. In America football is clearly the most popular sport so if we can usher in or organically grow more collectors and sellers into the sports card market then I believe the market will turn the tide and begin to reflect that.
I believe buy the G.O.AT's Tom Brady Rc Michael Jordan and past Hall Famers are safe all current players can been very risky because of injuries .

I have a 1999 Upper Deck Michael Jordan Athlete of the Century box (sealed) I only see one online asking for $400, I would think this would be valued higher. Any thoughts to why it’s around the $400 range?

Yeah. Not all quarterbacks are great investments. The worst football card purchase I made was buying a Josh Freeman auto Jersey rookie card for $70 back in 2011. That card is worthless today because Freeman’s career faded faster than a fart in the wind.
Look on eBay at the Trevor Lawrence gold ice auto /10 psa 10 for sale right now. It is extremely off centered from top to bottom. No way it's a 10 in my opinion. I'm now 100% convinced SGC is the best grader. Not the best label or slab or resale value but definitely the best and most consistent grader. Sucks they don't sell as high as PSA. I have 100s of numbered refractors and rookies I need to get graded. I have a really hard time getting SGC to grade them even though I like them the best due to resale values.
100% SGC IS BY FAR THE MOST CONSISTENT SINCE DAY ONE! FACT!

He didn’t play this year. So what’s it gonna take to get that card to what they payed for it?? And what if it doesn’t get there again? Me I am out- spending money not adding value of cards. I still hold a valiant 1/25 on card auto- the ONLY- the 1 BGS black label 10- his only black label card made. What’s that worth?

and why is that? Prices of well-graded cards had been doubled or more in the last couple of years. You can question if sports card is a good investment long term wise in the future, but saying investing in cards isn't smart when the numbers and math disagree with you will just make you look stupid...

@@patriotsholobreakers6308 I think it's more than a passion project. The sports investor app can potentially be huge as more people use it. And the amount of data he can gather from the apps will be extremely valuable to other card-related businesses in the future.
He's not just a card collector or investor, I actually think this is actually one of his serious investments/ventures.
