      Someone is going to find a way to grade cards with a NFT and we are going to do away with the dumb ass card grading prices and process. They only hold the power we give them and I would say majority of people probably lose instead of gain grading cards. I love buying PSA under $20.. it's done already. I'm with you guys.

    • @Dwatts84
      @Dwatts84 Před 2 lety +72

      Yup. How ironic they claim to grade all cards the exact same.... $5 card is graded same way as a $5 million card..... yet they dont charge that way. So what do you get for the extra money? • @Axle3369
      @Axle3369 Před 2 měsíci

      Exactly! It doesn’t matter if a card is graded or not. If you look at it and are an honest person, any trained monkey can grade a card. Does it really matter if it has a holder with a corporate logo on it? That just means that someone paid someone to look at your card and extort money from you to say if it is a 1-10 or just authentic if it’s in rough condition. If the card is a 10, then it’s a 10 whether it’s graded or not. The only opposing issue is with signed cards. But most are already authenticated cards that came out of packs so it really isn’t that big of a problem. I made a comment about the price gouging of cards that get a high grade, if that is justified then there should be a discount on cards that get a lower grade for the opposite reasons they use to gouge people who take care of their cards

    Don't forget to look at the back of the card. A lot of newer cards have scratches on the back because the cards are moved through the printing and cutting process on rollers at the bottom of the sheets of cards. Immediately knocks it back down to a 9 at best.

I always wear a good disposable glove so they don’t get fingerprints on them, but I did go ahead and Clean them up anyways, I sent of 10 cards from Topps chrome and Panini in F1 racing soccer and UFC and just my luck. I got all 10 back at a gem mint 10 and I have to thank you guys for this because I don’t think they would’ve came back like that if I did not do the cleaning prior to sending I did not even think about and it’s funny that the gentleman mentioned, Beckett penny sleeves oversized that’s the only penny sleeve I use the same one oversized, Beckett brand and all my top loaders are by Beckett as well. You have to get the best protective gear for your collection. Thank you so much for the valuable Intel. I just sent off another 10 cards to get graded. Let’s see what happens. Its not like they have to do more work whether they look at a 100 dollar card versus a 100k card. The fact that there are up-charges on grading cards specifically if the grade they gave will cause the value to increase more than any other card is the prime reason why grading companies are corrupt and I wouldn’t use them. Once they get to grading cards a 10 vs a 9 it’s all at their discretion. If they feel they’ll make triple or quadruple the money if they give you a 10 why wouldn’t they as long as it looks relatively good. Everyone and everything is corruptible sadly.

    I sent in 42 cards to SGC. Of those, I got 21 10’s, 18 9.5’s 1 9, 1 8.5 and 1 8. I did zero prepping. They went from packs to sleeves. I was fine with the result.

    I've always felt like the issue with card collecting is there's normal guys like me who collected cards buying a pack or two at a time here and there and we'd throw the cards in binder with a soft card holder sheet. If we happened upon something worthwhile we'd put it in a semi ridgid full of specks of sand that just scratched the cards worse then protecting it and when we found something amazing or so we thought we'd put them in the ridgid holders. We shoved the binder on a book shelf and called it a day. And then there's some guy who buys the cards by the pallet and just floods the market with cards that have never really been handled by a normal person or ever really "traded" so to speak like we used to do with our cards when we were younger. I mean look at how many cards are behind these guys on the set. How is a normal person ever expected to compete with that? It reminds me of a time I found out a friend I went to highschool with actually had been into collecting cards in the 1990's like I did. When I asked about his collection he pulled out a cardboard filing box from a storage closet out on his apartments ground floor porch. It must've collected water or something or just soaked it out of the air or something cause the box looked gross. He then proceeds to pull nothing but sorted and completed sets of whole series of cards for year after year after year. Every card in the series nearly. I was like how did you get these. Well when he was a kid his mom and dad were rather well off and so when he started collecting his parents having the means bought him a massive amount of cards. His collection was amazing. It made my binders at home feel worthless in a way almost. I was looking at completed series of cards and trying to fathom how many packs he would've had to buy to complete series like that. Well he told me his parents spent not only a lot of money but a lot of lot of money. Lol. They apparently spoiled him rotten with boxes of cards straight from the stores in the area. To the point where he said he thinks he put a dent in the local areas card market most likely. He had a pretty decent portion of the cards for those specific few years kids my age collected and probably made it a very saturated market I was thinking. Then he tells me that whole cardboard box was just the ones that he had sleeved and that he had boxes and boxes in his storage units somewhere. I cringed. About six months later he ended up having some financial problems and had to move out of his apartment. He didn't offer me anything or asked me if there was anything I could've used. He just tossed all his stuff from his apartment knowing his parents would probably buy him new. Well about the last day he was in the arartment I asked him about the card collection in the box in the porch closet. He laughed and said he just tossed the entire box into the dumpster at the apartments. I almost cried. His collection of a lifetime just disposed of to avoid not getting his security deposit back. I couldn't believe he would be so un appreciating of the cards he collected and I think it was just because he never really knew what it was like to buy a single pack of cards out of his pocket being a broke kid. That small event really summed up my whole experience in the card collecting game. Ever since then I've had a few people ask me if I wanted to buy some cards and although I know most of the cards had been picked through for anything worthwhile most likely I reached into my pocket and paid what I could for even the mediocre binders of cards because I know my card binders meant something to me as a kid. It was something I did with my friends and my dad and my card binders meant something to me. I would hate to find out someone offered me there collection I turned them down and then they decided the cards were somehow completely void of value and ends up tossing them because they couldn't sell them. I tried to give them top dollar too knowing one day they're probably going to kick themselves in the ass when they think about those cards and why they ever decided to sell them. Those times are coming very soon now I suppose. A resurgence is something we all wished for and now that it's upon us it's obvious it's still a market with two types of collectors. Guys like me who bought a few packs and the guys who bought boxes of boxes of boxes.

      Thanks for the story. Sad. So sad. Pathetic really.
      It would have been wonderful to just go through that collection. Like mining for gold. "Here's one! A Mantle.And here, a Yogi Berra, and a Ted Williams rookie card!!" Rich kids find life boring because there's nothing they don't already have or could buy to get. My older brother would go with me and my dad to the flea market. Back in the 70s baseball card were like M&Ms. Cheap. Plentiful. Dealers would have them in boxes to buy for a penny each. One guy even sold my dad a garbage bag full of cards that he then gave to my brother. I didn't collect. But it was fun for me to watch him get so excited building a collection of his favorites. Slowly getting the teams and players he wanted. There was no such thing really about "crisp corners and centering" and all that PSA stuff. Most cards were bumped on the ends, but again, some were still valuable as you know. They have good values down into the 7s and 6s (graded). Then, when the first pricing books came out, the hobby became a YAHOO STOCK immediately. Card values exploded. Boy, was he happy!! That had me daydreaming a lot. If only I had bought 20 sets of 1975 TOPPS sets of baseball cards. Wow. So many incredibly valuable cards in that one. And even the "unopened" packs. Ha. Did anyone ever think back then of buying dozens of packs and not opening them for 50 years?! What they're worth now, unopened, is shocking!!
      As long as you enjoyed the hobby, is what counts. My dad would say about collecting... that all this stuff just gets handed down anyway. We are just "temporary stewards" of these collections. Our job is to take care of them, keep them safe, and then hand them down so someone else can enjoy. You take care!

    Can you talk about sending vintage , cause some cards in like a PSA 3s are worth more than like 95% of modern cards 😂 can you do a video talking about the differences of grading value between soem vintage an modern , are psa more lenient on card grading on a card from like 1910 , or do hey expect a card from 1910 to have the same condition as a card released in 2022 and be a PSA 10?

    • @gabeturner6451
      @gabeturner6451 Před 3 lety +1

      I had similar questions and what I did was go out and buy a few cards with different grades from era's similar to the ones I want to grade out of my collection. Lots of junk wax stuff, some vintage football, et cetera to try and get a "feel" of how they are graded. I got a few PSA 6 + 7 for less than the cost of grading the card (especially now) and I grabbed some "affordable" PSA 9 + 10's. All I really came with is that the general tenants of grading are applied in the same manner but with an understanding of the type of technology available at the time. As an example, sharp corners in 1977 and sharp corners in 2017 are too different things. I have a 1990 Fleer All Stars Larry Bird PSA 10 where the corners look "sharp" but it's not like a 2020 Panini is "sharp". And I think that if that same sharpness from 1990 is applied to a newer card it most def doesn't pull a PSA 10. I might be wrong about that. I've got 100's of cards at PSA right now so we're gonna test my hypothesis a bunch over the coming year.

    • @gabeturner6451
      @gabeturner6451 Před 3 lety

      Something else I'll add, especially with regards to newer cards, I have the same cards in a PSA 8, 9, + 10 and in some instances you can barely tell the difference or point out the flaws card to card. Especially between PSA 9 + 10. It's not every time, but it's enough that I took notice during my "research phase". And by "research phase" I mean thinly vailed excuse to buy even more cards.

    Love the video! Not sure if this was asked/answered already. I understand about the upcharge if cards grade higher and value goes up....but what if a card grades lower than the estimated value, does PSA credit or refund any money spent to get that particular card graded? Seems to me if there's a possibility of an upcharge PSA should refund or apply a credit towards another card if the grade and over all value is lower then what was paid.

    Have reasonable expectations. Have gotten back so many cards that to my eye look perfect but to psa’s standards fall short…mostly centering even ones that I still think are on point after getting graded. I think with modern cards especially high dollar should be laser centered at this point…shouldn’t still be an issue in 2022.

    Hello Sports Card Investor. I am hopeful you can offer your time. I do not expect a full explanation, but just some basic information. I have many Pokemon Topps Chrome cards (Tekno, Sparkle, Spectra...) My cards typically went right from pack then into premium sleeves, toploaders and into a card storage case for over 20yrs. When I went to revisit my cards I noticed some of the cards stick to the sleeves. I do not remember the brand of sleeves from that long ago, but I do remember I would always buy acid free. I do not believe the cards sticking to the sleeves is due to the toploaders being tight, because some of the cards were not in toploaders and they also did stick. I am able to carefully loosen them up a bit and some of them I had to use a cotton swab to reach into the corners to lift the sleeves. I am careful to not let anything but the cotton to VERY lightly touch the cards when I do that. I am not sure if it is because they've been in the sleeves for over 20yrs or is there another reason? I've noticed when I put them back into my preferred brand Cardboard Gold Premium Sleeves and when I would go to pull the cards out of the sleeves only a week later, they seem to stick again. I've tried different sleeves, and the same thing happens. My home is not the best climate controlled because I am surrounded by water (ocean/bay/creek) and wonder if it is humidity. When I look at the cards after I removed the sleeves I can see random faint spots on some of the cards. I did use an eyeglass cloth on a test card to wipe away the spots. Most of the spots were easy enough to remove, but some of it seems to be in that top layer. I cannot tell if the card will have these spots naturally due to the card process, or have they just aged badly and stained from the card and sleeve over the years? I truly appreciate your expertise and time.

    You should look more into Automated Grading Systems (AGS). They are a new competitor in the grading scene and have made a name for them selves through their usage of AI to accurately and fairly grade cards. AGS much more consistent with their scores than PSA and Beckett because of this.

    I haven't sent cards for grading in over a decade. I have a few and now I see PSA is not accepting new submissions and there are months of time to wait for Beckett (for the lower priced options). In your opinion, since you're offering services to help us get cards graded by SGC and CGS, will these companies hold their value compared to PSA/Beckett? I'm not seeing as much money spent on those graded cards, even the higher grades. Also, would it be worth it to buy one on Ebay that is a 9.5 or higher from one of these other two companies, crack it open, and submit it to BGS/PSA and expect the same grade? Or is that too naive?

  • @tkmyr
    @tkmyr Před 3 lety +3

    I have what is admittedly newbie question...
    Someone that grades with your service will presumably have their card in the same order as other people. How does a person know that his say Chipper rookie is his or another person's grading with you? It might not matter as much if they get returned the same grade, but it certainly matters if they grade differently.
