Can 80's and 90's Sports Cards Make GREAT Investments?? (2020)

- Some invest in today's hot rookies, others invest in vintage. But what about 80s and 90s cards? Could graded "junk wax" actually make a wise investment? I answer that question in today's Sports Card Investor. .

I’m young and never saw Mickey mantle play but owning his cards makes me feel like I’m owning history.
Just got back into the hobby 6 weeks ago. You're helping to reduce my learning curve immensely! Thank you!
Darryl Close same here!
As a "90s kid" I collected basketball cards during that time, but left the hobby in 2002. I have recently returned to collecting and buying graded cards of the players I had back when I was a kid.
I enjoyed being a kid during the junk wax era - cheap packs of cards with all our favorite players...
I collected cards when I was younger but over the years I have completely lost touch with the hobby. Watching your videos has gotten me back to buying and collecting cards. Thanks for the excitement and the great content.
Love those 80-90's sports cards..love ur site..Sharon in San Diego..
This is the, “wish I still had that card” video. Found some Jeter RC the other day that I need to get graded ASAP!
This video makes me want to go dig out my old 90s cards
My first year collecting was really the start of the junk wax era, 1987. Now that I'm older and have more money, I've gone back to own the stuff I wanted when I was 10, love the junk wax stuff
Since the early 90’s I’ve collected cards. Not only can it been an investment but also a passion. I love the card. Whether it was graded or raw, knowing that just a little piece of cardboard with a picture on both sides can be can unite, gratify and satisfy you and other like minded people is a rare combination that few other hobbies can accomplish no matter how old you are... great video keep up the good work.
I found your chanel yesterday and I was able to learn so much about this whole thing, its incredible. Keep putting out these kinds of quality videos, they really help! Great job!
It’s not always about financial value on the cards like a Mantle. It’s about owning a piece of baseball history!
Unreal show- thanks for all your insight. Side hustle> passion> profit!
I’ve collected Penny Hardaway since the mid 90s and have found his value continues to rise over the decades. I’ve yet to see a substantial dip in prices. Great video!!! Thanks Geoff!!!
We need to catch up soon my brother. Very proud of what you've accomplished in such such order Geoff! 💪👍
Loving life... bringing back my past love for card collecting.
My wife and I are learning so much from your channel. Rediscovered the hobby during quarantine and successfully hunted down my childhood collection of 80’s and 90’s cards. Now I only need to bridge the 30 year gap in card buying! Thanks for all your insight. We will continue to follow your work throughout social media and beyond. Take care.
I would love to win that box! I’ve been watching you for a while and I just started collecting basketball cards and don’t have that much so it would be great! Thanks so much for doing this!
I'm afraid we're entering another junk wax era..
It's possible, but I really believe the manufactures are much smarter about it today than they were in the 80s/90s. I've personally talked to some of the high-ups at Panini and they say preventing another junk wax era is one of the top things on their mind at all times.
Hopefully there will be some data to prove we are not entering in a junk wax era
If we are entering another junk wax era I'm sure you're selling your entire collection correct????
Started collecting last year and fell like I jumped on it right on time.
@@SportsCardInvestor I'm only 26 so I don't even remember the junk wax era. I just remember going to flea markets with my grandad when I was younger and guys would have box after box of 90s Donruss baseball cards.
I collected cards as a kid and lost track of the hobby. Luckily, I found your channel and it has renewed my love for it! Thank you!
I started back collecting a year ago and the first thing i did was buy cards that i wanted as a child. 89 griffey upper deck. 90 leaf frank thomas etc.
❤️ looking at 90s cards. Especially 🏀! I like to look at 12months to see a longer trend line
90s Bball Cards don't suck up to him Jake, you're better than that. He has no respect for 90's cards.
Hello my friend. I’ve enjoyed very much. I’m trying to join your membership tier 1 but I sent you a message about Paypal. Thanks
I just started following and watching your videos. Thanks. Super helpful. I look forward to learning more.
I agree I think 90's stuff will gain popularity. Even just going through my old 90's cards and seeing "oh this is a parallel never knew that" lol and enjoying the stuff from my childhood again.
I started collecting when I was in College and concentrated mostly in Michael Jordan's cards. Using my limited budget, I only chased some of his rare and iconic Inserts. Grading isn't a thing yet. Stopped collecting when he retired.. Came back to the hobby last year because of Luka Doncic.. Bought a ton of his Rookie Cards and it reminds me of the time when I was in full force collecting MJ's cards. It was fun back then.. but today, it's more fun to be back in the hobby because just like what you said.. we are now older and with steady income from work. The timing is perfect too because the past year and this year's NBA Rookie class consists of players like Luka, Ja and Zion. All 3 of them are considered a generational talent.
I love the 96-97 basketball year!!! Greatest draft class!
I chased the Griffey as a kid. Was never able to get one but I had his Donruss and Bowman rookies.
The quality of cards today is crazy compared to the 80's & 90's era....this channel is very informational when comes to the investing aspect of collecting cards.
Maybe if every one starts throwing away all their junk cards from that Era to make them scarce perhaps one day.
Thanks for the Prizm box.
Bringing me back to the good ol days
Nice to know that cards from the 80’s and 90’s still have some play. Matching the interest level and value with those at ages with disposable income makes sense and applies to flipping products in many categories.
Love collecting cards from my childhood!
I'm a baseball card collector, but now, my grandson (12 yrs) plays basketball. He likes basketball cards. Thus, your vlog is a great connection for us. Thanks for the great insights.
80s/90s was my first wave of collecting before returning in 2014. Great video!
I've been skunking so bad with all the new cards that I recently went back to opening boxes of stuff like Donruss 89, Upper Deck 92, Topps 93 and some packs of 81 Donruss. I still prefer to search for cards from my childhood rather than drop $200+ and get just base cards in return. Thanks for the opportunity.
Just started to get back in cards. Forgot how fun this hobby is!!
I am 39, got back into the hobby about a year and a half ago. I'm not too interested in graded cards, but I have been scooping up rookie cards of 80s and 90s cards I didn't have as a kid. (I still have my collection from childhood, but they were in my parents basement and some didn't fair too well down there).
Welp its time to pull out this old box full of cards.
Thanks for making me step back and take a strategic look at collecting. When I got back into it I was wasting money, and now I feel more knowledgeable about what I’m doing
Makes me think I should be unloading my 1966 Mantle and 1955 Topps Harmon Killebrew Rookie card.
Love the look of 90’s football cards! Classic
I started collecting back in the 90s and have started collecting again in the last 3 yrs
randomly finding your videos a couple months back has changed my outlook on investing and treating my card collecting as something more than hobby. thank you
The world of sports card collecting for the average person can be overwhelming. Thank you for the time and effort you put into showing me how to turn my childhood hobby into another way to build a financial future.
Still got my junk wax era cards and still love them !doubt any would grade a psa 10 but a trip down memory lane every time I go thru them .
Love your videos, thanks! I like your perspective on collecting. You nrimgnsome.professionalism to our hobby.
Some of 80's card's are investments like WADE Boggs, tony gwynn, Ryan sandberg, cal ripkin jr, Don mattingly, Roger Clemens, kirby puckett, mark McGuire USA rookie. THERE are a bunch even KEN Griffey Jr upper deck so we really can't say it's a junk wax ERA because of value of some rookies.
Watching this a year later and you killed it!!!!!!! Everything came true that’s why I luv u
Learning new stuff constantly thanks to stick/tips seen here. Thx immensely!!!
I loved the older cards of 50s-70s growing up. But I never bought any after the late 80s. I may start again after watching your videos as an investment. Glad I kept all my old cards over the years.
Totally agree with your theory on 80's and 90's icon players.
Finally got myself a 1993 UD Derek Jeter PSA 8
80s and 90s were my heyday. So I have a ton of cardboard to recycle.
Loving the discord!
Just got back into collecting baseball cards after a 20 year break. Getting up early tomorrow to go hunt for Bonds rookies at the flea market. The thrill is back!
I am nineteen years old and new to the sportscard world but I am in love!!!
I love the 1980's rookie cards
1980 Rickey Henderson is one of the most Iconic cards in baseball, imo. 1981 Valenzuela, 82 Ripken, 83 Gwynn, Sandberg, Boggs, 84 Mattingly, (a great investment as his potential can skyrocket depending on his coaching career) can keep going...Canseco, McGwire, Bo Jackson, etc.
Very interesting video, first time viewer here but love the topic!
Thanks for all the help!
Fast forward a year later, and that same Griffey rookie is now a 2K card.
Love those 1980-1990s cards!
My dream job... flipping cards!!
This is a great forum for collectors and now I am spreading this like wild fire...looking forward to it!!!
I collected with my dad growing up and your websites/videos have rejuvenated the hobby for me again. So thank you very much for allowing newbies like me back into the community! I really appreciate it!
Thanks for this video. It makes me feel better about my childhood collecting 80's and 90s cards.
Literally just getting back into sports cars as a 40 year old. Looking forward to learning what I can from a spending perspective
Hunting for my first ZION!!!
Watching your videos sparked that fire to start collecting again. I feel like a kid again, thanks.
Always learning from all of your advice. Thank you so much!
Still have quite a few cards from 80's and 90's when I was a kid. Might have to go take a peek. Thank you!
I used to share the same opinion on cards thinking who is still alive that has watched that player play. After watching someone out there is still buying Ty Cobb a player they could not have watched in person.
Thanks you too! Cause I was born the 80 and I loved watching , Jordan , Pippen , Kurr, for football, huge huge DALLAS COWBOYS FAN LOL
Thank you for teaching me another way to look and buy cards. Family first detailing
Rediscovering an old hobby. Great to see your show.
Excellent episode as usual !!
Love it Geoff. Good point about grading finally creating scarcity from the junk wax era surplus. I think you're right that we'll see 80s/90s/00s players jump because of the nostalgia value, but I also believe the truly "iconic" players before them will do what they normally do, steadily rise in value. Cards like Wagner, Ruth & Nagurski didn't stop attracting value, despite their fans passing on decades ago. Iconic cards from Jim Brown to Mantle, Maris, Russell, Wilt & Mikan will rise along with the legends of our youth (Jordan, LeBron, Brady, etc). What you see fall off are the "not-quite-iconic" players. They fade away, both in memory and value. Another exception, iconic sets will stay steady collectors. 48 Bowman Basketball, 33 Goudey, T-Series baseball cards, etc - right alongside the 90s PMG Greens/Reds & so on.
Always enjoy the information, thanks 🙏🏻
Thanks for your insight!
There is no way that the junk wax era of cards graded or ungraded will ever be on the same playing field with vintage. The last two years has put that on full display. The prices kick up but then it dies right back down because there is no true collector market for junk wax graded or ungraded in large enough numbers to ever warrant million dollar sale of a Ken Griffey 89 upper Deck. I love the card. I love the player. But we have to be realistic and I think that's when people get into trouble in this hobby is when they are not realistic. For example during the Hysteria of the pandemic as it relates to cards, Jordan's PSA 9 got up to $90,000. Now they sell for $25,000. Those people lost almost 70% of their investment. Short of there being another worldwide crisis that shuts down sports, they've lost that money for a long long time if not forever. I love your enthusiasm for the sport card market but the iconic players of the '60s aren't going anywhere or the 50s. The people in the know are even chasing back to pre-war baseball because of the long-term investment that that suggests and the ROI.
I did tons of collecting during the junk wax period. I have a soft spot for them
Got back to collecting in the 80's when I started going to A's games again. Collect mostly baseball vintage, but have a ton of 80's and 90's sorted and boxed into sets. Ove the info.
Definitely a 25 year gap in my collection. I started to get back into collecting as my kids took an interest. This is good to hear... thanks for your input!
Great stuff. Always learning something new! Thanks!
Great video! Love the advise. I’m always looking forward to the new episodes.
Thanks for the CZcams show and the podcast.
Thanks Geoff! LOVE 80s and 90s cards! (I'm a Favre collector)
Great channel!!! Great info!!! Really looking forward the membership program!! Keep up the solid production!!! 💯
Wish we had all this info and eBay back when I was a kid collecting, although we all would have found out that our cards were were nothing
Thanks for your knowledge!!!!
I have so many late 80's early 90s baseball cards boxed up somewhere it makes me sad. It was so much fun back in the day but the idea of going through them now to find anything...ugh. great video!
Griffey 1989 Rookies have took off!!!! Glad I have several :D
Hey Jeff, love your vids, keep up the good work
Thanks for your video. I’m in my 50’s and just started collecting again.
love that you are going to post more content!
