- When investing in sports cards, it's important to strategically diversify your mix. In this episode, I explain the five categories of sports card investing and how to buy cards in all of the categories. I also show some of the great deals I got at the 2019 National Sports Collectors Convention. .

Thanks for tweeting the information about your channel & glad we found you! Keep up the great work & we'll keep tuning in whenever the bell rings!
Love your podcast. Here you on my drive from work. Keep the awesome work 👍
Jeff! I’m literally checking my phone constantly for the next podcast/video. I neeeeed this. Lol.
This weekend! :)
This is great advice! Saw your vids at the nscc 2021 last week!! I'm a collector and enjoy your videos!!
I can't believe I had the chance to buy those 1986 Fleer packs for 35 cents a piece but never did. I also used to buy 1968 baseball wax packs for 5 cents and never saved any not even the cards but I did chew all the gum.
Thanks for video. I have two players I am investing in Luka and Tatis jr. Can’t wait for next video . New subscriber.
27:00 thanks for this! I've been searching everywhere how to diversify or build an all-weather portfolio in card world!
This is a great vid for a beginner. Thanks
Great show, wish you talked about baseball more though :)
Thanks so much for doing these videos mate. Watching intently from the South West of Western Australia! I have been looking for a while for videos like this, your right that there are not many.
I know the players to invest in change each year, but if you decide to put the information and stategies you are sharing into a book... I will be the first to buy. I'd probably ask if you could sign it, and be smiling like a kid meeting Santa!!!
Keep up the great work mate, cheers
Hope you sold the Finley right after the steelers game
Thank you! Super video! :)
Great videos!! Just discovered you. I'll keep watching if you keep making them!
Great video 👍 I appreciate your time and effort that you put into these videos ☺️
Its weird watching this in the future after having recently visited a card shop that had a ton of autographed Ryan Finley cards in their value bin.
I got a nico hoerner national red refractor for 12 and flipped it for 50 a week and a half later. Great vid love the channel.
So you have a video on which basketball card model other than prizm is good for investing?
Great topic a lot of key points , great info, and WOW that MJ is serious , congrats ...
Thanks!
Dude, how much did you get the MJ for?
Hey Geoff, is ep. 7 forthcoming?
I'm a new subscriber, I'm near Atlanta to.
Love ur videos first off. Second did u do any trades at the nationals most of my money would be in the cards id bring are dealers into that
I did do one trade - traded a Kevin Knox (who I’m not high on) for a Giannis. A lot of people were trading, even dealers. And then there were huge trade nights events too. I think trading can be a great strategy at the National.
@@SportsCardInvestor thank you for your advice quick response and am looking for to more videos from u
Last category is the Best. Its like buying 3M when its dividend was under $3 and your YOC is like 30-40%
What’s a good price, if you’re listing a card on eBay, to start the bid price?
I normally start low to get more ppl interested/invested in the auction or just list it for the min amount that you'd sell it for if you don't want to possibly take a loss.
I like your show and this is just my second video
Great video! Awesome breakdown. Just one note is that Draymond just signed a contract extension, so he won’t be a free agent after all.
Thanks! Yeah saw the Draymond news right after I filmed the video - it might have happened as I was filming it - lol.
Oof the Ryan Finley
I got a 2017-18 select premier die cut #d 185 green parallel for $22 it's raw but I was superseded when it came it looks like a 9 minimum
Possible 10 depending on the grader and the day .
what do you think about buying set like panini nba premium hoops set were they are number to only 199 sets?
Scarcity is always a good thing. The question will be if people like the set and find it to be a premier collectible set, like how people think of Prizm.
This is great! Thank you! Derek jeter long term investment!!!
What do think about Kobe rookies hold on to them or sell? I have about 10 of his rookies that I've held onto for 20+years now not graded but are in excellent condition!! What u think? Thanks also I have a Ben Simmons in mint or better 16-17 prestige rain parallel rookie if interested!!
I want to get the Kobe topps chrome some day.
Yea the refractor would be amazing!!
How's the Simmons investment going right now?
Also tatum is gonna be a stud for the Long haul #savethefile
Just discovered your channel. Interesting videos. I am a lifelong collector and although I purchase more for my personal collection. I do buy some modern cards with an idea of maintaining or appreciating value. Couple thoughts I would add. When investing, you have to know the sport and player you are investing in. Don't just invest in #1 overall pick or top free agent for example. Know the player's game, the market, the team, etc etc. I don't really follow the NBA or NFL so I don't really want to try to start to invest (MLB is my game). Also, I would be very hesitant investing in any football players long term. The injury risk is so high and often career altering in the game (like pitchers in baseball). Yes, there are players who are become long term guys but it is risky .
All good points, thanks for sharing.
You being born on this earth was risky everything in life is risk. 😉😇
What about Carson Edwards?
Damn, those Giannis cards must look good right now
I invest in Embiid and Jonathan Isaac. Hopefully they're staying healthy next season :) And I agree with you - Bradley Beal cards will be a good investment; I'm considering to invest in Beal.
Embiid I like for the same reason I like Simmons - 76ers have a great shot at the finals. Hopefully we’ll see that happen and see their cards go up!
Isaac breakout is underway. Nice!
I like how you cut through all of the haze with different brands, inserts and so on. And you are totally correct, there's plenty of video out there talking about the hobby, but not enough about investing in the hobby. Keep up the great information Jeff!
Thoughts on Josh Rosen?
Just responded in the comments on the QB video. LMK if you buy some of his cards.
I love the idea of this but mass production & advanced replications pretty much kill it for me...
Yeah mass production is a concern. I am going to do an episode on that soon. I think high-end serial numbered cards will hold value but I'm concerned about print runs of other sets.
@@SportsCardInvestor Just the fact that I have to send a card somewhere out of sight to have it graded kills it for me bc Then for all I know it gets replaced by a rep!! I really love the idea of getting into cards, it sounds so fun but unfortunately it's all dead to me... I feel the ones lining their pockets are card companies, graders & scammers... No room for genuine collectors/investors in such a shit show game
N keal Harry #supersleeper now that Gordon is reinstated New England might just have the best wr core in the leauge! Josh Gordon ... Harry... Eddleman an great supporting cast all while the best qb to play the game throwing to em in a win every year now situation before he retires it's a no brainer
Due to his injuries, maybe Ben Simmons will finally take that next step this year. He is a risk though. Also, I believe the favorites in the east would likely be playing for a 5th seed in the west
Seems my instincts were decent back then....what's the value on those Ben Simmons RCs now?
Geoff - really enjoyed this episode and how you break up the categories.
Flipping - like your example, but I have several other. On COMC, you can find get deals and then grade those cards. Most the base you bought PSA are available raw on COMC.
Season Prospecting - I target potential ROY of the players. Brogdan was a terrible example though. MVP in Football unless the ROY is QB. Love targeting potential free agents. With the player power in the NBA, players are picking team. Yes, you can make money on these pre-changes.
Key Moments - more gambling but fun. Football is perfect example and biggest hype. Look at Danial Jones after week 3. I think you need to discuss liquidity. If a big moment happens, how do I cash out? The same could be said about career ending moments. Antonio Brown is perfect example. Kareem Hunt took a beating in value. Another reason to stay away from football
Career investments - I like the plan. I would ask, do you set an exit value? For example you are buying a lot of Ball. What if his card sky rocketed after a crazy season run to $500 per silver over the release value. Do you cash out and take the profit? I think the biggest lesson learn is to exit. Easier to teach than do.
I would suggest adding an investment category: Seal Product (bases on metrics and some historical stats, would you invest in sealed Prizm 2017/18 class with Mitchell, Lonzo, Tatum, Collins, etc? Or 2017 Contenders or Prizm Football with Watson and Mahomes? 2017 Prizm football was last year all rookies were Silver. Watson or Mahomes or even Trubisky Rookies raw are good cash. Graded PSA even more. I would buy up as much 2019 Prizm Basketball now sealed and sit on that for huge return on money. So much to share...
Hello Jeff. I live in the United Arab Emirates and there aren't any sports cards shops or a community or at least not that I know of. What are your recommendations for me to invest and make money as shipping from ebay to the UAE easily reaches $100 which means that profiting is extremely hard. Tank you and I absolutely love your videos keep going!!!
Check out the website comc.com. It’s a marketplace where they hold the inventory. You can buy, hold and flip all on that platform.
You should cross that MJ over to PSA and gain more VALUE
The only critique I have is that the name "Lebron James" never slid off the tip of your tongue for long term investing.
Lebron is great and I think is a great long-long term investment. I’m not sold on buying him right this minute though. Because, if the Lakers don’t make it back to the finals in the next year or two, Lebron might never make it again. And then his card prices could remain flat or even drop a little bit. At least Anthony Davis has 10+ years ahead of him whereas Lebron has much less time. That said, if the Lakers do make it to the finals (and they are a favorite to do so) then his cards will go up and up.
I use Category 5 and what I call 6 when you bargain shop HOFers and soon to be or will be HOFers and YOU CANT MISS and your cards value only goes UP
Kemba Walker sssssh don't sleep
the getting them therevquic
Only comment I want to make is maybe stay away from big’s like Collins. Other than Shaq there are very few big’s that garner Hobby love for an extended period.
Amazing video Jeff! I just got into the game and I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one that thinks of this as investments! Over the past couple months I’ve been stocking up on Devin Bookers/Trae young’s and lebron bowman rookies! A national treasures Montrez Harrell just to resell at the end of the season due to the clippers odds of winning the title and my long shot gamble is I’m buying anything Michael porter Jr. and hoping he even comes close to his pre-injury projections 🙏 Again, you’re the first channel I have subscribed to and keep the great content coming!
Thanks! I like your strategy, those could all be good investments... good luck!
I'm from the future - Ben Simmons is no longer in the NBA
Hey Jeff check your instagram messages please......thanks!
This did not age well :)
