Ford 7.3 Diesel- GLOW PLUG SYS-TESTS

- Welcome back...its obvious what we were doin here on this job. However, i did forget to mention and add i should say....that when testing as I was showing when the relay doesn't click there's one of two things the one I was explaining where the PCM doesn't ground the glow plug relay. It also won't turn the relay on if the engine oil temperature sensor is indicating that it is at operating tmeperature. The glow plugs only come on when it is below that so if the sensor is reading bad then it would cause the relay to not click. To take the EOT sensor out of the equation, if you unplug it you can cycle the key and the relay clicks and you get a light now then you know the engine oil temperature sensor is what's causing your truck to not start, you have to do it cold obviuosly. If your truck has already been ran, if you shut it off you dont have to wait to start. The light does not depict glow plug on time. If its hot GLOW PLUGS WILL NOT COME ON. Theres no need to, cylinder temp is hot enough for combustion. Glow plugs are for cold starts only...thanks guys for watchin!!!!!

I''m here to learn...I''m 61, worked with all kinds of diesel engines, but the Powerstroke & other Light Duty diesels are a learning experience for me @ 61 yrs. old.
Awesome, stay locked to my channel cuz your gonna see a lot of cool stuff!! Thanks 4 tunin' in!!
Thanks for the in-depth diagnostic info! This gives me the confidence to dive into the glow plug system on my early '99 7.3 F250.
I just bought a 03 Powerstroke and the first thing I noticed was it wouldn’t start in the cold. Now I know where to start. Thanks for the video
Did you get it going? Where did you start? I just bought a 2003 7.3 and its hard starting in the winter
Peep the 7.3 playlist, i show ya how to check if the glow plugs are working or not
Your channel rips buddy. I'm always on the lookout for fresh uploads here. Thanks
Nice video, great explanation of all components. It made my day go faster. Thanks!
Dude ...your videos rock! You and Flmmaz are my top two subscriptions. Finely skilled craftsmen, you both are....
+What-da-Heck ! DUDE THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!! THANKS 4 WATCHIN.....HELP SHARE ME AROUND...stay tuned got more comin
Very informational. Glad I watched this before I started throwing parts at my 03 7.3 👍👍
Got a lotta good shizzz
Great Info. I will put it to the test this afternoon. Having a not Starting problem
Nice video! Really appreciate you going through the diag process on this truck. Great info.
+Alan Schmalzried its my pleasure, its what i do!
@@PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod awesome job well made great information
I just installed a White-Rodgers glow plug relay. After watching this video great info thanks. Are you located in Livonia? I used to live on Robert Drive. I also lived in Inkster, Wayne and Romulus. Cant say i miss Dietroit.
No kidding!!!!!
I have to say I love the thoroughness
Alwayz
Cool !!! Helps me on my "Auction bought" f350 with 7.3 engine. Wouldn't start when they went to sell it but found that if you let it roll down the hill,(the day before) it would start. !!! :-) It was 29 deg. at the day of the auction.
Dude, great video but I’d give you a thumbs-up just for the singlehanded ohm check.
I've done 2 of our explorer intercepter water pumps, what a treat! Also love the 7.3 video I have a 2000 myself with 180k and it is a beast!
+Kevin Sheriff Jr yea uve done a few too.
I have a 2000 as well 301k and counting
you explained the system perfectly. thanks for an awesome video
I loved the way you get right to THANK YOU
Very instructive sir! I just bought a 2000 for my kid. I haven't had one in forever and all I did on that was an oil pump.
I'll be subscribed just for extra random knowledge! Lol
💪💪💪💪
I just put a White-Rodgers glow plug relay after watching this video greatinfo love the vids. I used to live in Livonia, wayne, Romulus and Inkster. Can't say I miss Dietroit though.
You are a pro🤙 I ve never been to the dealership for repairs maybe I need to. Great video.
Thanks pal! Give em a try
Thanks bud. Great video solved a huge question for me🙌
Nice Thor's Hammer electrical proof testing. I just bought a 2000 F-450 with a dead glow plug relay. I live at 4500 feet and it gets very cold. A little time on the internet and it is my understanding that the OEM relay is undersized. The replacement that will last the lifetime of the vehicle is a "White Rogers 586-902" 200 amp relay. These are used for many purposes and are built tough.
excellent video. very informative , and highly useful. 7.3 thumbs up.
Thanks T
Nice little pigtail you have there for troubleshooting the Injectors and the Glowplugs. Thanks for sharing. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

Wow...knowledge here is solid.
Nice job on the 7.3. Love the vids. Learn something new every day.
+Betts Pools thays my GOAL
thanks, i now have a hint where to start. well explained.
Thank you sir
Very helpful for my 7.3 thank you
Thanks. My relay was out as well. This sure made it simple to diagnose.
Dude was that you?? I appreciate that🤝🤝🤝
@@PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod That was me. Cheapest diagnosis I ever got!
I just took the relay out and hooked the two wires together...
Thank you for the video! I was able to diagnose my 01 with190000 and it was just the solenoid!
Thats what im here for!!😉
Good info 👍 thank you very much!!
Perfect video man. Thank you.
Hell yeah, share me brah!!!!
Good vid buddy. Appreciate it 🙏
Helpful, great video
Great explanation.
Love learning, thank you
Continue your videos on also changing out the parts for us DIY guys
Great video. Lots of help
Thanks so much, like a sub
Very good video. Thank you!
Check out my other 7.3 videos
thank you for share you experience !!!!!!
Very good and concise. Would like to see one on a 1990 7.3
Shhoooooot bud aint no 1 brining that to the dealer..
Very good video. Thanks
Thanks for stopping by my channel!
Cool informative vid thanks
Nice video thank you my friend
Arod, I really like your troubleshooting videos. How can I get one of those harnesses connectors to test individual glow plugs? Parts counter?
Recently you showed cranking with the baloons on the Left/Right bank fuel lines to verify a stuck open injector. I suspect leaking injector as some fuel was tested positive in the motor oil. Do you have any other ways of diagnosing injector issues without having high cost tools? I have a late '99 7.3L with just under 200k mi., also hard to start below 40F, but will start if I use the block heater.
Very informative video
Thanks for sharing.
Amazing information
Thanks pal!
well done.
Good shit, thanks dude.
Yepppp
By the way fantastic video
Thanks for sharing
I like your videos
Ok, I gotta say, this is too cool! Ask a Ford tech how to test glow plugs on a 7.3, and couple days later, there it is!! I have a few CZcams accounts I have subscribed to, but don't really follow, but I'll def be adding yours, and watching as you add new ones.
Again, thanks for this video!! How was the car show??
Tom
+gr8guitarplayer thanks so much. I told ya i wld...jst so happen thats how it werked out. Thanks 4 watchin.....share my videos 😆😆
I'll try. Thing is, I have about 6 friends..., let's see... Brian, Mark, Ron, Jason, Pat, Jay..., yeah, at least 6 guys I know who all have 6.7's. But whenever I tell em stuff about their trucks, their eyes glaze over!! They're the type who just trade their trucks for new ones every few years. (They make more $$ than me, lol) Plus, I still love my 7.3!! But that new truck, DAYUM!! Been seeing more than a few around town lately.
+gr8guitarplayer lol they glaze over....hahaha
great info thank you

Engine oil temp sensor!!!! Haha finally!!! After years of fing around !!!haha!!
nice video
By the way, for anyone who is having hard cold starts (which I was having earlier this winter), I took a screwdriver and shorted across the big lugs of the relay, held it there for about a minute and a half, and the truck started much much easier. Not the best way to rule it out, but it did get my truck started before I ran the batteries down a couple of really cold days, until I could get it replaced. That pretty much pointed me to a bad GPR, which was confirmed with the new one. (Kinda goes back to when I was a teenager, and my starter relay on my Mustang II (yeah, I know, but it had the V6, and for a 16 year-old, it was fun to drive, and a good car to learn some basic mechanics on) didn't work. It was located on the inner fender wall iirc.)
I added a light to the gpr so i know if it's engaged or not.
@@PowersPlays97 I did the same thing I put a red LED light on my lower dash so I can tell if my relay is working.
Isn't that what the wait to start light does??
@@forrestn4988 no that just tells you the plugs need preheating. they can run longer than the light
Test glow plugs on 2000 f350 with 7.3
“Not charging him to check the glow plugs”.
Stand up dude right there. Most shops around here would charge to check them, then replace the glow plugs, then when it still didn’t fix the problem, say...”Well, the glow plugs weren’t at optimum performance, and because of that, the glow plug relay shorted out, causing them not to work at all” 🙄
Fact
No lies herrr
Exactly why I'm here don't wanna take it in until I know exactly what it does need
Hell yea!!!
Will a failed glow plug relay cause the SES (check engine) light to come on? My 2001 F250 7.3 has symptoms of cold no/hard start (have not tested relay yet) - and the SES light is on. This year of diesel did not conform to OBD standards, so a regular OBDII scan tool won't give me codes/info. (And I see 2 almost identical relays up there - you're testing on the one closest to the firewall. What is the one for that is closest to radiator - a few inches fore of the one you're testing?)
No it will not. An OBDII scanner will pull codes for this...also it is the intake air heater relay
great help
Keeping busy as usual; thanks for the update! Do you get to pick your jobs or are they just assigned to you?
+ojn007 both, i get all the powerstrokes EV-hybrids. main driveability guy so pretty much all the hard stuff no 1 wants to mess with
Great video very clear on explaining and demonstrating. Where did you get harness for testing glow plugs. ??
Comment section....
did you make the connector for the harness or buy it? I do a lot of work on a bunch of people's 7.3's. would love to have one in my tool box!!!! love the videos btw
+MonsterGT43 no, ford special tool and thank u....if u had n old harness u cld make 1
MonsterGT43 , you could make one with a harness repair kit. Dieselorings.com
PowerStroke Tech Talk w/ARod thanks. I definitely will!
What’s the part number for the special tool you use
I'm going to try
I know yout tested the Glow Plug Relay and it was bad, but how do we know if the Glow Plug Controller is any good? How do you test the Glow Plug Controller that sits below the Glow Plug Relay??
You either have California emissions & the module OR you have the starter relay looking that is the GP relay. One or thee other. You eliminate everything else if you have CALIFORNIA....no tests for the module....
Wish you had a link in the description for that harness
Thanks for that.
Yepp
Having issues with hard start in temp around 40 degrees. Replaced the relay, starts a little better, but still get a lot of with smoke when it starts, suggestions?
Going thru my two 7.3 hard start videos shld be what you need. If you would like to get a hold of our Hotline, visit our paypal & we can continue with high speed voice communication.
Great video. Where do you get the glow plugs/injector test harness?
Check the comments, someone posted a link
Question you mentioned no smoke coming out the tail pipe had it smoked what would have then be the outcome ? Im having a similar problem but I've noticed smoke not only in the tail pipe but the turbo as well any advice ? Thanks in advance
Im going through this right now what did you end up doing ?
Cool diag on the glow plugs ! Not a 6.4 but I still enjoyed it
+Mark Kennedy thanks
+Mark Kennedy thanks
+Mark Kennedy thanks
Thanks
What is that wire your testing stays hot all the time?? I neeed help. Key on or off ir stays hot .. I don't understand? What's causing it to always stay hot
1998 E350 here. Concerning the dashboard indicator light, with a failed glow plug relay will the dashboard indicator light still come on, or will it not come on. I'm just now beginning to start investigating why I have white smoke sometimes on startup and sometimes not.
Love the van but Damn, really hard to change those drain valve all rings! Thank goodness my 7.3 has never left me on the side of the road after 300,000 miles. Are you able to open up that relay by the way and clean up those contacts?
Excellent tip , good camera work too. Thank you, Subscribed!
Thanks 4 subscribing! Yes the light will still come on if the relay has failed. Make sure 2 watch the 7.3 videos i have. Itll show you the most popular causes for either white smoke[incomplete combustion]or just a straight up 2 check your glow plugs.
But i see two glow plug relays....does it matter if only one relay is bad and the other is good?
I just replaced my
gp -relay closest to the fan but which one should i have checked the front one or the bavk one?
When the GPR does NOT come on as commanded by the PCM..., wonder if they could design a circuit that would then tell the PCM that the relay didn't energize, and throw a code? (Or maybe they have in the later engines?)
gr8guitarplayer it started with the 6.0 bubby
Got a 02 7.3 changed both relays up by fuel bowl have click but no power to other big terminal, what causes this?
thanks for vid
U bet
Great video just want to know what I may be able to get that tester that you used in this video
Read thru the comments pal
I have a 01 7.3 and found that my GPR wires that go to ignition solenoid in the harness was burned chewed and melted and the relay itself is extremely bad looking truck was ok took a hour trip and then battery light came on figured the alternator and changed it didn’t work was really cold to snowing etc kept checking things out turned out my IPR was bad or not working the sensor part was busted so changed that etc started up but not easy and damn thing wasn’t charging still ...swapped the alternator out and figured Shity parts store one etc and damn thing still wasn’t charging etc was chasing things like the signal wire on the alt with key on was only seeing 9 volts 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️ idk why.... my batteries are little low etc but should still see 12v etc started looking around and found the burned chewed up ones traced them back to harness behind the a/c pump on top that went to the GPR pulled boot off the main one and severely corrosion etc rust soooooo any way to fix the burned chewed end etc snd just replace my GPR if it tests bad
Where do you get your hands on those test leads? -thanks!
Ford special tool, probably can find em online somewheres...
So if your not getting a light on the opposite lug on the gpr you mentioned it could be the first set of problem? How does one check those problems? I’d love to be able to email you to run some things by you. My gpr is good even put a known good gpr on and still no power across. I’m having a no start issue.
Hey bud, give me ur email and we will talk!!
great video. i have 02 7.3 that isnt doing any clicking or anything. power from battery but no power anywhere else reguardless of keys position. how do i go about getting PCM repaired?
my email is
levi@barnyarddieselrepair.com
Do know why the California version has a module instead of a relay? Just curious what it does different 🤔
The module monitors the resistance of all the glow plugs and tells the PCM if one has faulted to turn the check engine light on hence California emissions
You can go to the junk yard and find a 7.3 of the same era and cut the harness. Also in a pinch you can use a test light to check the glow plugs
Hi I watched a video that showed this test light method before I started working on my early 99 this week. I had 2 bad plugs show on the left side, and tested them with a battery charger when they were out. Those diagnosed correct with 2 working, the other side I had 1 not working from the light test.
I figured I'd replace all 4 while I was there as passenger side is more of an ignorant bitch to work on. when I tested them out I had 2 bad not just the one. The second one would spark when I put power to it but wouldn't heat up and glow bright orange like the other good glow plugs. My guess is if my multi meter was around the home shop this week that plug will show a reading but be out of the spec shown in this video.
Do I have a 2002 f250 7.3 PS. Won’t cold start. But if I plug it in to the block heater for a few minutes it starts right up. Thoughts?
U need to do these tests so u can find out what is not functioning
Hey love your videos, I have a quick question, I have a 2014 f250 6.7 xl with power locks and I had this problem with locks not locking or unlocking but when I hit the button on the key it would honk the horn like it locked or unlocked, and they told me it was the fuse and they put a 30 amp in stead of 20amp, cause by this point i took it in at least 4 times for the problem. Well it happen again I went to change the fuse and it wasn't blown so put it back in and it worked any suggestions on what could be tripping it like that?
+Medicshee350 oh gosh, sounds like them dudes who are diag'in need to go home. Ill have to look into that guy..
+Medicshee350 thanks for watchin too!!
Did you make a blower motor video?
well I know the 2017 f 150 has gen two. I don't know if the explorer PI has gen two yet. the new 3.5 eco has direct injection with the old school fuel injection as well to help keep the combustion chamber s clean. kind of a a wierd set up. they probably will phase gen two ecoboost accrossed the other models later.
So I finally figured out how my multimeter works and took some readings off of the GPR. After turning the key the glow plug terminal initially read 0. Then after about 20 seconds I heard it click and got a reading of 11+ volts. It seems weird that there would be that long of a delay between the key turning and the relay activating. Do you have any suggestions? I plan on testing the glow plugs next to see if they are within spec.
Relay.....
Got a question I have a 2003 F-250 Ford lxt old 7-3 in it it's just hard to start it takes about 15 seconds to 20 seconds to start up slower than usual
Have to go thru the vid bud and do those tests...
Nice alternator is that a mechman? Looks like a different bracket. T.y
Hi
I change my glow plug, because I thought that was my problem, but now I found that all the pins are hot and the one goin to the glow plugs its giving me ground? Do you know wats the problem?
Tks
You could have a few things goin on. Id love to help if you like to help me. Visit my channel and make a worthy enough donation and I will dive in with you..
What was the tool he used to check the glow plugs after ruling out the relay?
What brand oil and weight also fuel additives would you recommend for a 7.3?
10w30 in winter 15w40 in summer....all motorcraft!!!
PowerStroke Tech Talk w/ARod thanks
I run delvac 1300 15-40
Can both of the solenoids go out at the same time I have no power on fuel pump and no wait to start light. By the way great video I love the way you get right to the point
........go check your fuses. 1 is blown
Exact same thing happening in my 2001. Door locks and all...
Wait what does the door locks mean?
What about a bunch of white smoke during start up? Never any issues starting even when it's cold out
+Shane Vollmer if your gps system aint workin yea you gon get plumes of smoke
Went off topic at the end. 😂
Where can I get one of those gloa plug testing harnesses?
