  • Welcome back...its obvious what we were doin here on this job. However, i did forget to mention and add i should say....that when testing as I was showing when the relay doesn't click there's one of two things the one I was explaining where the PCM doesn't ground the glow plug relay. It also won't turn the relay on if the engine oil temperature sensor is indicating that it is at operating tmeperature. The glow plugs only come on when it is below that so if the sensor is reading bad then it would cause the relay to not click. To take the EOT sensor out of the equation, if you unplug it you can cycle the key and the relay clicks and you get a light now then you know the engine oil temperature sensor is what's causing your truck to not start, you have to do it cold obviuosly. If your truck has already been ran, if you shut it off you dont have to wait to start. The light does not depict glow plug on time. If its hot GLOW PLUGS WILL NOT COME ON. Theres no need to, cylinder temp is hot enough for combustion. Glow plugs are for cold starts only...thanks guys for watchin!!!!!

    Nice Thor's Hammer electrical proof testing. I just bought a 2000 F-450 with a dead glow plug relay. I live at 4500 feet and it gets very cold. A little time on the internet and it is my understanding that the OEM relay is undersized. The replacement that will last the lifetime of the vehicle is a "White Rogers 586-902" 200 amp relay. These are used for many purposes and are built tough.

    Recently you showed cranking with the baloons on the Left/Right bank fuel lines to verify a stuck open injector. I suspect leaking injector as some fuel was tested positive in the motor oil. Do you have any other ways of diagnosing injector issues without having high cost tools? I have a late '99 7.3L with just under 200k mi., also hard to start below 40F, but will start if I use the block heater.

    By the way, for anyone who is having hard cold starts (which I was having earlier this winter), I took a screwdriver and shorted across the big lugs of the relay, held it there for about a minute and a half, and the truck started much much easier. Not the best way to rule it out, but it did get my truck started before I ran the batteries down a couple of really cold days, until I could get it replaced. That pretty much pointed me to a bad GPR, which was confirmed with the new one. (Kinda goes back to when I was a teenager, and my starter relay on my Mustang II (yeah, I know, but it had the V6, and for a 16 year-old, it was fun to drive, and a good car to learn some basic mechanics on) didn't work. It was located on the inner fender wall iirc.)

    “Not charging him to check the glow plugs”.
    Stand up dude right there. Most shops around here would charge to check them, then replace the glow plugs, then when it still didn’t fix the problem, say...”Well, the glow plugs weren’t at optimum performance, and because of that, the glow plug relay shorted out, causing them not to work at all” 🙄

  • @HarmonyHollowApiary
    @HarmonyHollowApiary Před 5 lety +1

    Will a failed glow plug relay cause the SES (check engine) light to come on? My 2001 F250 7.3 has symptoms of cold no/hard start (have not tested relay yet) - and the SES light is on. This year of diesel did not conform to OBD standards, so a regular OBDII scan tool won't give me codes/info. (And I see 2 almost identical relays up there - you're testing on the one closest to the firewall. What is the one for that is closest to radiator - a few inches fore of the one you're testing?)

    • @PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod
      @PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod  Před 5 lety +3

    When the GPR does NOT come on as commanded by the PCM..., wonder if they could design a circuit that would then tell the PCM that the relay didn't energize, and throw a code? (Or maybe they have in the later engines?)

      Hi I watched a video that showed this test light method before I started working on my early 99 this week. I had 2 bad plugs show on the left side, and tested them with a battery charger when they were out. Those diagnosed correct with 2 working, the other side I had 1 not working from the light test.
      I figured I'd replace all 4 while I was there as passenger side is more of an ignorant bitch to work on. when I tested them out I had 2 bad not just the one. The second one would spark when I put power to it but wouldn't heat up and glow bright orange like the other good glow plugs. My guess is if my multi meter was around the home shop this week that plug will show a reading but be out of the spec shown in this video.

    Do I have a 2002 f250 7.3 PS. Won’t cold start. But if I plug it in to the block heater for a few minutes it starts right up. Thoughts?

    Hey love your videos, I have a quick question, I have a 2014 f250 6.7 xl with power locks and I had this problem with locks not locking or unlocking but when I hit the button on the key it would honk the horn like it locked or unlocked, and they told me it was the fuse and they put a 30 amp in stead of 20amp, cause by this point i took it in at least 4 times for the problem. Well it happen again I went to change the fuse and it wasn't blown so put it back in and it worked any suggestions on what could be tripping it like that?

    well I know the 2017 f 150 has gen two. I don't know if the explorer PI has gen two yet. the new 3.5 eco has direct injection with the old school fuel injection as well to help keep the combustion chamber s clean. kind of a a wierd set up. they probably will phase gen two ecoboost accrossed the other models later.

    So I finally figured out how my multimeter works and took some readings off of the GPR. After turning the key the glow plug terminal initially read 0. Then after about 20 seconds I heard it click and got a reading of 11+ volts. It seems weird that there would be that long of a delay between the key turning and the relay activating. Do you have any suggestions? I plan on testing the glow plugs next to see if they are within spec.
