The Ford does have the power, no question. But if I'm hauling 12K+, I'm gonna need that Cummins all day long. For many reasons: the two-stage exhaust brake is superior to any HD truck. The confidence in towing in the Ram(notice how stable your truck was with no cabin shock. You were able to drive that thing one-handed as if there was nothing hitched). And of course the luxury and comfort of the Ram(and this is still the 4th gen cab).
I agree, the Aisin limits the true performance of the Ram. The Cummins makes the power for sure, but the way they have the gearing spaced on the Aisin is what hurts. Plus you can't get 4.10s with the Aisin. That would help a LOT.
Great post, I love how the Cummins sounds completely different under load, it’s one of the coolest things about the Ram trucks. The Aisin is fine, when your towing, speed is least important but the Cummins isn’t too far behind the Powerstorke so it’s more than enough power especially seeing in the video I got up to abs maintained 70 MPH 👍🏾👍🏾
@@JB_WhoWork I'm reminded of a test that TFL Truck did on unladen 3/4 ton trucks. The Ram obviously had the 68 but was never too far off of the far more powerful Chevy and Fords, also despite being down in gears.(it actually won one of the races). So you're right, the speed is cool, but if I'm towing, its hard to beat the Ram. And it still offers the best everyday ride as well.
yeah i cant drive my powerstroke with one hand with a load lol
blow by that dodge
You do know that Fords have 2 settings for the engine brake?? Try testing it with the automatic setting and it’s completely different than manual. Much stronger.
The ford just outshines the ram when towing! The power stroke and the ten speed tranny in the winning combo now!
Powerstroke has great power but it doesn’t outshine the Cummins at all, speed is secondary to stopping and the Cummins/Aisin has that Locke me down hard 👍🏾
@@JB_WhoWork comes down to personal preference. I driven all three and for me, I went with power stroke which isn’t a knock on the other two.
It is amazing how strong they are. 6 percent grade and all that weight. Maintaining speed is on a normal grade is what its about. Great video!
Yup, slow but steady and maintained above 70 MPH 💪🏾! Thanks 👍🏾
I've owned a '22 F250 and a '16 F250 both Powerstroke. They both definitely have the power to do anything I want. I didn't believe you after your first video that the engine brake was that much better since I've never had any problems with the Ford, but clearly, that Ram has more engine/exhaust braking capabilities. Pretty cool.
I don’t know what I’d go with for a diesel srw, but I know for a fact if I were to get a dually it would be a ford f450. The turning radius from the front axle, the other upgraded components, all paired with the quick powerstroke motor and quick shifting 10 speed. Gasser, f350 7.3 all day. Most power, old school pushrod design. I do like the exhaust brake on your ram. That is absolutely excellent. However, I do also like the get up and go of the powerstroke, and I have a bit of a ford leaning soul lol. Love our fam’s 3.5 ecoboost f150, loved our old 5.4 expedition (rip), and I’m sure our 7.3 f350 will be amazing too.
Love the Video!
Thanks 😀
Love the video brother keep up the good work, but I'm still a Duramax guy mine kills it every time up and down partly summit as well as other giant summits up to 9000 to 10,000 ft in elevation. Keep up the good work
Thanks bro, the Duramax is a powerhouse and I can’t wait to see what GM does next, I think it’s going to blow Ford away when it comes down to power 👍🏾
Let just admit that the big 3 are all good trucks. If you’re hands down a Ram guy then you’ll stay with Ram. If you’re a Ford guy then you’ll buy Ford. Yes there may be things we like about the other but it’s not enough to steer us away from what we are partial to. Just like JB said, he liked the power of the Ford but he’s still sticking with the Ram for his personal preferences. All good trucks in my opinion. I’m a Ford guy so I’ll keep driving my Ford 😁
💪🏾💪🏾
Very well said. New trucks from the big three are all very nice trucks, buy the one you like!!
I will say leveled and with your wheels/tires your truck looks awesome!
The Ford shines everywhere for towing, take that trailer up some mountain two lane roads with lots of turns. You’ll quickly realize the difference in the transmissions. The Ford has power everywhere. The Ram lugs trying to keep its speed up.
Safety before speed 😁
Only for the Ford to fry its brakes coming DOWN the mountain.
@@hellkitty1014 yeah right. I only use mine to tow heavy, the EB works just fine.
@@crf4502 yeah, but nowhere close to the Ram. That is well documented.
@@hellkitty1014 big deal, your first comment is still 100% bogus, that is fact.
Put the 10 speed in gear limiter mode and all you need to do is force a down shift and your exhaust brakes will work the same.
My Chevy with the 10 speed will go down a hill just fine as long as you force the trans down to a lower gear since the computer will not do it for you because the trans tuning on this thing is stupid.
I passed a Cummins last week going uphill. His exhaust brake must have been engaged. 😝
Hahahahha there is a reason semis are not v8s
@@pilot41186 then why do all the V8 diesels make more power and torque? 😂🤣😂
@@secretsquirrel572 they also don't last as long either.
@@hellkitty1014 tell that to Ford 6.7 owners that have 800,000 miles on them. One guy has 1.3 million miles. I’d say we get our monies worth.
@@secretsquirrel572 everything makes it to that mileage after 3-4 rebuilds.😇
I had a 2019 limited 3500 just like yours except black interior. I now have a 2021 Ford F-350. I can sum it up real quick. Interior quality and how well the interior is put together hands down Ram. Also like you mention the exhaust brake on the Ram is awesome. Ford wins in every other way. I really hope they redesign the Ram and give us a true fifth gen soon because I am a Cummins guy at heart. Both are awesome trucks you really can’t go wrong with any of the big three. Love the channel JB keep up the great videos.
Good stuff, I second a true 5th Gen and hopefully a Aisin with more gears 👍🏾
So 2 questions... First... How big of a concern is the cp4 pump on the Ford... And second can't you buy an aftermarket exhaust break that will compare to the ram??
110 percent agree with you ive been a cummins guy for awhile I started a family and traded in my 18 cclb g56 laramie that had 10k miles for a 2013 powerstroke because she cant drive a stick and loved the crap outta it, it was deleted but man ive got love for all 3 but ill take a Ram for now I drive a semi for a living and its always been cummins minus a few detriots and cats but now a days with the emissions its been cummins, the engine brake has always been a strong point of the cummins big truck and pickup! the really hard part is them powerstrokes look SOOOOO damn good!!!!!!
The Ike gauntlet towing test will answer all your questions. Ford power plants far exceed performance across gas and diesel platforms. Minutes ahead up hill and less braking downhill
Man your the go too for comparisons
Thanks bro!
I really like the look of that truck, looking for a ram and the mega cab look slick. How has it held up?
I'm only towing a 15k fifth wheel but coming east from Asheville NC I touched the brakes just once to drop 5mph going into a corner, the entire way down! The Aisen is the only tranny to get with a ram. I shopped all three and ended up with a 350 dually, like you full time in a fiver, add on top I got a hell of a deal. See you down the road
Hey man, enjoy your videos.. thanks for taking the time to make them! The one thing i want to say, is you really should not tow in 6th gear.. its an overdrive. At such low RPM, you are potentially lugging the engine. The cummins likes to be 18-2200 RPM under load. The higher RPM will keep your temps cooler as well. Just a suggestion. Keep up the good videos!
I have to agree about the Cummins exhaust brake it definitely slows you down w/o hitting the brakes. I drive Ford F550 & F450 at work and the exhaust brake is no where near what the Cummins is. You have to step on the brakes to get it to slow down before the exhaust brake too kick on on the Ford's. This is what I've noticed. The 10 speed transmission is nice, but the Ram has a good thing going with the 6 speed and the Cummins inline motor. That's why they haven't changed it. Hopefully if they do change it it'll be just as good or better. I really enjoy my 2018 2500 Ram w/ Cummins diesel I use the engine brake a lot when I'm traveling and with the speed changes going thru the small towns I rarely have to hit my brakes. Thanks for this video. My next truck will be a Ram 3500 for sure.
Great point, I think RAM has a uphill challenge for sure when going to change the Aisin trans, especially keeping reliability at the forefront 👍🏾
Towing our 14.5k lb high profile 5th wheel (GD Solitude 2930RL) with the 2020 F350 that I purchased based on your CZcams review from early 2020 Tremor (Century Ford - Mt. Airy) …. We towed I70 through Colorado and going down the steep grades the F350 did much better than our prior 2005 Silverado 3500. I agree that the exhaust brake is not like a Cummins; however, the 10 speed transmission automatically downshifted to hold my speed so I was not applying brakes at all. The power going up inclines with both vehicles is very impressive. I would be happy with either towing a 14K to 15K 5th wheel. Any heavier and I would go to an F450 DRW.
That’s awesome and It’s so funny how that video almost didn’t happen due to some back and forth. Glad it was helpful 👍🏾
Love your ram
💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
Good video
The Ram has a huge bump in the passenger floor board taking up half the foot room. My wife vetoed it immediately. The Ram felt sluggish too but I didn’t get to try the HO version.
Cummins has kept the dumpster fire of Dodge in business. Both Ford and GM are on another level.
That’s one beautiful truck you got there man I think both the RAM & FORD are amazing trucks in there own way I feel the RAM with the Cummins is just the way to go not saying that the 6.7 Powerstroke is a bad engine I feel like Cummins has been around long enough that it’s proven itself time and time again and that’s just the honest truth I also feel I’m im going to spend over 100K on a truck it’s going to be a very comfortable truck and I feel that the ram has the most nicest interior in the truck line today again nothing against ford because ford has come a long way also I can say ram & ford are always into making more power and the Technology in both trucks are definitely up-to-date💯
The Ram may have a nicer looking screen and dash pod, but the Ford interior fit, finish, comfort and ride quality is way ahead of the Ram.
Coming from a ford guy you are spot on. The exhaust brake on ford a gm is non existing.
I do love the 2500 Meir cab when I used to work for plumbing company few years ago the owner of it had one and I was always in all of that truck and the sheer size of it but you are right it’s not fast like the Ford but you don’t buy a truck to go fast lol but I do remember feeling like king of the road riding and that Cummings
💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
With your truck being leveled, it does squat quite a bit with the trailer hooked up. They may be one reason you felt a bit of sway while towing.
Ive had both airbags and timbrens on several trucks. my choice is air bags because you can change the ride due to highway surfaces and changing tongue waits. Afew extra pounds one way or the other can make a big difference in your ride.
Thanks for sharing this, I will definitely get the factory air on my next RAM!
What kind of Fuel mileage do you get with your 2019 diesel pulling your camper? I have a 2021 Ram with Hemi. Also 10k fifth wheel and I'm getting 7.5-8.5 MPG.
Good morning, JB, both of those trucks are so nice and have plenty of power for what’s needed. I’ve been camping and trailering around Colorado and Wyoming this summer and I see the majority of Rams on the road over GM & Ford. I’m not sure if that really means anything, but that’s what I’m seeing. With that being said, I think the one thing that holds the Ram back against the competition is the transmissions like you said. If Ram can get an 8, 9, or 10 speed in these trucks and give it a modest HP jump, I think it would it would be the ultimate tow rig. Ford and GM are making big pushes with their next gen trucks so it will be interesting for sure.
I don’t have a crazy heavy rig (max out is 14k) but I’ve never lacked for power going up 5 to 7% grades this summer. Plus, like you pointed out, the down hill braking is absolutely ridiculous when it’s in the full brake mode, the other s don’t come close. My buddy that has a 3500 Denali just laughs when he drives my truck and we test exhaust brake, he understand he barley has one. 😂. Great video as always.
🤣🤣🤣 Yea I’ve had guys bust out laughing when they feel how strong my exhaust brake is! They all make great trucks but you do typically see a RAM heavy lifting, who work?
@@JB_WhoWork Ram
We haul trailers that weigh around 21k lbs. and where we work the electric brake wiring gets pulled out of the hubs. We have rams , ford's , and Chevys and when the trailer brake aren't working you don't wanna be in the ram so I'm curious which truck stops the best loaded from 55 to a dead stop . Exhaust breaks are great but their not the only factor in every day drive and shirt distance stopping. The rams have terrible brakes
If you ever do reviews on best suspension for towing or off-road check out KYB Monomax suspension and Bilstein 5160s ,,, im getting eibach pro truck stage 2 put on my sierra next month found them on shock surplus supposed to pretty good shocks for a reasonable price
Good stuff thanks 👍🏾
@@JB_WhoWork no thank you! For your awesome content !🙏🏾👍🏾😎😎
Can’t you do a light tune on the Cummins? Also, aren’t there allison conversions? Nice rig regardless
Let’s not discount the fact that the Ford has 2 extra cylinders and 4 extra gears. My 2021 Ram 2500 is tuned, not deleted. It changes the game.
Hey JB, been building different models and configurations of Ram 2500 on the Ram website for a while now deciding on what to order. I see Ram recently dropped the Rambox option from every trim level except the Limited. Any idea if that is a permanent change? Ramboxes have become a must for me but I’m not interested (can’t afford) a Limited…
Oh wow, that is news to me, I guess it’s a supplier issue
Credit to Ram for the exhaust brake and I think the I6 design is an advantage there. But the Ford’s power dominates the Ram. The Ram struggled to get to 70 and Ford blew past 70 and was accelerating to 80. I think Ford is using some Apple magic. The engine and transmission are both engineered by Ford. The software running the powertrain is also Ford. They are optimized to work seamlessly together. Like iPhones hardware and software integration. Ram is using a Cummins engine mated to a Aisin transmission linked together with FCA or Stellantis software. It works but the integration can’t be as good as Ford.
@@Jbs6187 the agreement with between Ford and GM was Ford was to design and engineer the RWD transmission and GM was to do the FWD transmission and they would both equally pay for the cost and have the right to manufacture it in their own plants. The commonality they both worked on together was the fluid specifications. GM uses the 10 speed with little changes but Ford heavily modified the GM 9 speed down to a 8 speed because they weren’t happy with the original design GM came up with. But it’s still a GM transmission used in just about all Ford FWD vehicles.
@@Jbs6187 in the 1500 10 speed. Not the hd allison.
I agree, Ford’s power is on another level
@@JB_WhoWork now. I have never once drove a powerstroke. You as someone who has driven all the new trucks. How does the l5p and power stroke compare.
@@bobkrunkle5626
There is no current "HD Allison".....LOL!!
I love the exhaust brake on my ram that’s the only reason i pick ram, also i have 37” tires and the ride is 100 times better than stock
I have 21 RAM 3500 HO with 37s and the Carli Dominator 3.25 King Shocks, absolutely Love it! I put the Banks Big Ass Air Box and the Banks Monster ram air intake, I'm waiting for the Banks Derringer tuner, guess our stupid EPA has it held up.
You think that sway is coming from the leveling kit? That's exactly how I felt when I did it to mine. I hate to say it but I think I'm leaning toward the Super duty for 2023 unless ram does something. Msybe with all the hate on their exhaust break, they addressed it for 2023. I like the bigger cab, bigger bed, fuel tank, def tank, the bigger camera screens and that 10 speed! You should have done slow down test with each exhaust brake like you do the acceleration test. The only aspect ram has over the Ford is the exhaust brake and maybe the tire fill assist, which I absolutely love. Maybe Ford has that feature too, I don't know. Great video!
Leveling kit didn’t cause sway, I think the 35’s did. I did get footage for exhaust brake comparison
Does anyone notice the seats in the Ram make you sit higher up vs the Superduty?
Absolutely 💯 if I wanted something fast I would buy a hellcat not knocking ford there great in there on right but the simplicity of the cummins 6 in a row ready to tow and yes that exhaust brake can't be beat ww ram
Yes sir 💪🏾💪🏾
I think it’s all in preference. I drive class 8 trucks all the time and when I drive my Ram trucks the Cummins operates very much like they do. It’s how the power delivery is done, the in-line is a constant steady delivery. The Powerstroke and Duramax with the V8 has a power delivery that’s stronger at points but is not as smooth and steady in my opinion. It’s kinda like comparing a 2 stroke and 4 stroke dirt bike. The exhaust brake is no comparison. I’d still love to know if that ford you were running was stock or had a small emmisions safe tow tune. Guess we’ll know if you ever get the chance to try another one. Also would love to see a Duramax thrown into the mix to really stir the pot.
I second the Steady power delivery, Mikey P said the same and really though the RAM put the power down better! I’m working on a few things but still some ways out so hopefully I can do this for sure 👍🏾
You are AWESOOME!!!!
I have owned a '19 F-350 and a now a 450.
I've ridden in a cummins and do believe the exhaust brake is better.
But I'm not sure it's THAT much better.
My usual trip ends coming down a 10,000'' mountain with a 15k toyhauler.
I don't like that my Ford uses the trans more along with their version of an engine brake....it causes extreme downshifts and higher RPM than I like, but I apply the brakes vary little and always feel in control.
The cummins i talked about was a tad upset going up the mountain in that he could not maintain the speeds I was and he had a lighter trailer.
I don't know what ram's top interior is but my subjective opinion is my XLT was nicer than the tradesman and my Lariat seems equal to the Laramie with me preferring the large horizontal screen to the Ram's vertical screen.
Like I said, no experience with Ram's top interior vs the Ford limited or platinum.
Brah, I had 2 past by me in traffic using exhaust brake, really sounds good when temperature are hot outside.Oh man music to my ears. Both drivers smiling like yeah buddy👍 They really wanted me to hear that. Just because I was driving Chitty Chitty Bang Bang FORD.
🤣🤣🤣 The exhaust brake is so strong in the RAM it will throw you forward if you’re not careful 💪🏾💪🏾
Heck yeah! Looking forward 2024 model 3500 Cummins
Nice video. I’m thinking the Timbrens are why you had the floaty feel and possible away. My buddy that has the 2500 Ram had the same feelings. He actually almost wrecked on a rough breakdown in the road once. I just don’t think they let the suspension work like it should.
Thanks, I plan on doing a follow up video because my wife didn’t like them either 👍🏾
@@JB_WhoWork from what I’ve read I think the Sumo Springs might be the better choice but even those I don’t think would be the true answer.
@@matthewanderson9912 we have sumo springs on our f150, and it definitely helps. Doesn’t kill you on the daily but when you load up a travel trailer, put a bunch of stuff in the bed, or get in and out of the bed, it’s a game changer. Never noticed any extra sway.
What about longevity of the Ford vs the cummins?
The only problem with a Ford is it's still a Ford. The King of backwards engineering.
Ford has some more work to do on the exhaust break for sure they’re still my pick
considering a Ram but had a 2500 before with lots of electrical problems not sure if doge fixed these issues .nobody is talking about it only the power.Power is not a issue reliability is.
The horsepower with that Ford may come at a price. Will that engine give the same life as the Cummins? Only time will tell. The better engine brake is definitely a huge advantage for the Ram. I would buy the Ram, and actually am not far from it.
I probably would go with the ram cuz I'm similar more so with it but it would be a tough pick even with the chevy included
It is a tough decision and depending on how you use the rig, it’s even more challenging 👍🏾
Just about all years of the Dodge have transmission issues, hard to not use a 6.7 Ford for towing
Well there been some spoilers about ram updates it’s coming out with a new 8 speed it might just be better
Really hard to beat a Cummins/Aisin combo as far as reliability goes, but how’s the overall build quality of your truck? I had a 05 Cummins years back and as much as I loved the Cummins, the rest of the truck wasn’t so great
So far after 3 years it’s been great!
@@JB_WhoWork I’m a Ford guy, but I really liked my Cummins. My experience with FCA vehicles in recent years hasn’t been very good, but I haven’t owned a modern Ram. My modern Fords have very good build quality. I’ll probably go with whatever I can find a better deal on
You can get the fords 10spd tuned to have engine brake. F150 guys do it.
You got trailer brakes bro. And at current prices downshifting vs braking. Take ur pick
Downshifting
I really want to know how my chevy exaust break compares to youres
That would be great, from my experience I couldn’t get it to work in the GM
@@JB_WhoWork mine seems to work well. Just have to tao the breaks and it kicks in. I think the 6cylinders would slow faster then a v8 straight up anyways buuutt
Just finishing up a summer trip though the mountains of Virginia,West Virginia and Kentucky with a 2500 Silverado wit Duramax and 10;speed Allison descended multiple 6 and 7 percent grades and never had to tap my brakes. I was skeptical after reading the owners manual but the truck works best with cruise control engaged. The cruise control, exhaust brake and transmission work in concert to manage speed and breaking. Maintained the set speed down the grade with out any drama or fear. JBI live in Northern Va reach out to me. I also bought my rig from Beckley’s.
@@philliplondon6095 that is good to know as we will be traveling thru the mountains on our way from the mid west to cali.

I hate a leveled truck, to me it looks way better when up in back a couple inches
Ford is always known for being fast trucks Cummins diesel has always been known for best towing to my knowledge and Gm was in the middle of both my opinion
Yea they are all great 👍🏾
Air bags will eliminate all squat. I have RAM's OEM self leveling air bags on my 3500 dually and it rides smooth empty that all other HD trucks including RAMS 2500 with coils.
Nice!
Agreed. I’ve installed bags on my F350 and they make towing my 5er just a beautiful experience.
You're a Ram lover so just go with that there will be no changing your mind, if your happy with that then fine move on enjoy, I like Rams also but my Ford better and I'm fine with that also. A blazing saddles quote twist, We'll take the Rams and the Fords but we don't want the Chevys.
Man you crazy! 😂 Cummins ain’t got 💩 on the new 6.7 PowerStroke…
Ram by far but find a truck with a better tow package
Ford just feels more powerful as it’s a V8 but a Cummins is a Cummins. Cummins will outlast ford power stroke 100 times. No one is going to race with a 14k lb camper behind. Just saying
First.
Thanks bro!

The nose up look is ugly imo. I don’t get it…especially when you tow like you do.
My truck rides the exact same as stock
