    The most unreliable diesel is one that isn’t well maintained and properly tuned. Properly tuned and maintained it’ll last a long time.

      @@javadose317 some people mod their Diesel engines with no idea of what they are doing an it can hurt the engine. Properly tuned up and maintained it’ll run good for a while

    As a used car tech in a GM dealer, I have learned everything with a moving part breaks eventually, abuse and lack of maintenance is the biggest issue

      Couple buddies work at a school bus garage and they have been switching to gasoline powered buses for some years now because of all the problems and the funny thing is it’s not even about the school district having to pay for repairs because they are usually under warranty it’s about not having multiple buses as a time because they are getting work done and the town he works for is huge so a ton of businesses.
      IMO the emission systems on diesel engines should come with a much longer warranty.

    As an owner of an 11 f250. I’ve never had death wobble and my truck has 229,000 miles. Tires are 33s on stock wheels. I maintain proper air pressure and rotate/balance every 7,500 miles give or take a few. Just replaced my tires and the old ones were worn perfectly even on all four of them. The tire tech was amazed that I had tires so evenly worn on a superduty. My front end is tight due to proper tire maintenance, a reasonable wheel/tire combo and most importantly I don’t drive my 7,000lb truck like an asshole that thinks it’s a race car.

      03 Ram 2500. Lifted, 20” wheels 35” tires, drive like an asshole, 400k miles and I’ve never had death wobble 🤷🏻‍♂️

      Right on. I’ve never had the death wobble either. 2006 F250 6 liter. I’ve also never had a front end alignment.. Tires wear perfectly, and I get at least 40k out of a set.

    The government has destroyed diesel trucks. It's impossible for these car makers to make a good truck with all the regulations. Also chevy having electrical issues is a giving. Lol. At least they have consistency.

    The main thing I got out of this was the DPF/DEF system it’s one of the biggest issues with reliability so if you own an older one that is pre DPF/DEF overall you’ll have less problems other than wear items so long as you do your regular maintenance

      I have an 08 and a 2021 duramax, the old systems didn't require DEF and that system still works perfectly fine at 220k ish miles, it can do a regen sitting idling with the high idle feature activated, my 2021 requires me to actually drive the truck at 45mph min speed.. I think most people have issues with systems when they add tuners and aftermarket parts honestly because I've never had a single problem with them in stock form except for 1 def heater that failed due to moisture getting in the electric connection and causing a short, I've since taken apart all the connectors and added DA grease

    I've owned my '82 Square Body Turbo 6.2 Detroit Diesel for 8 years and would never want any new diesel truck. It has been extremely reliable and fun to drive, work on and upgrade. Parts are cheap and plentiful, I can fix anything myself on it and it'll never go out of style cause it's a Classic. New trucks are just too full of electronics and fuel stuff that always have issues.

      i got a 6.2 NA suburban, never had major failures, only wear out items. Love driving it, it may not be fast or powerful, but she's a better drive than most modern trucks.

I have invested over $40k in new parts and performance upgrades not including all the labor into my truck and she is the fastest and loudest Turbo 6.2 on this planet. I could have any vehicle I want but I prefer something I can work on myself, doesn't need any special tools or scanner and is all mechanical like mine is. I can assure you that any new truck on the road won't be running or as in good of condition as mine is after 43 years.

    Great video. I like the non bias review. These guys said every diesel has issues it's just different years and different issues. The key is maintenance for any vehicle. Good info!

    The most unreliable diesel is one the owner doesn't maintain. Period. LB7s like injectors, 6.0s and 6.4s like engines, Dodges like transmissions. It's not rocket science they all can make money disappear just the same.

      Same with gas engines and changing your trans fluid and filters goes a long ways to add life to your tranny as well as not towing in overdrive and with my 07 Dodge 1500/5.7 tow/haul mode is a joke, better fuel economy in 3rd 1:1 and easier on the engine and tranny while towing and that's with 3.92 gears.

      They make cupless heads now for LB7s. They also offer them in steel. If they came steel and cupless from the factory way back in 2001, might be quite a few LB7s still on the roads

    I change my oil and filters every 6000 miles in my Cummins for 8 years straight. Drive it everyday for 8 years not a single problem

      I’ve got a 06 with 470,000 Cummins change oil 5500 and fuel filter every oil change never had any fuel system issues or motor issues stock injectors 👍 service your truck it will service you

      I have a 2008 6.7 that has 292,000 and change at 7000. Oil analysis shows everything is still running good, with no wear.

    I bought a 2014 Mercedes Sprinter new with the 4 cylinder engine ( 1st year 4 cylinder offered). Lemon lawed it after 6 months in and out of shop. DEF sensor and computer problems. Mercedes paid for $4800 of U-Haul rentals while in shop. They gave me a new one and ran it to 150K with absolutely no problems. 23- 26 mpg consistently. Loved it.

      @@manolosanchez900 That 7.3 REFUSES to surrender. I have a 2005 F-350 Lariat 6.0 Powerstroke deleted (with 445,000 miles) and a 2024 Denali 3500 with a Duramax. The GMC hasn't given me problems so far (5200 miles) but I would NEVER sell the Powerstroke. They don't build 'em like they used to. With that being said if the emission crap is deleted from the Duramax, I bet it'd last more than the 6.0, the GM is overall a bigger and heavier truck.

    Regular maintained, mostly stock 03 2500 D/max bought new has 339K and still solid. Do believe the lift pump incl. A quality fuel additive every fill is pertanant. Smog free

      @@jimandersen3003 I had a 2000 7.3 psd. Ran for 265k with only one failure (cam position sensor). That being said, I would never give up my 6.7 psd for a 7.3. Its just generally a better truck. Handles better, turns tighter, rides smoother. The thing has monster power even without mods. I have 143k on it and have had absolutely no issues. The fuel mileage has gotten worse as my exhaust system has started to get nasty, but hasnt caused any issues.

    Just got an 01 7.3L for a steal. Needed injector cups. Was a HUGE job for me, but Riff Raff Diesel has the absolute BEST tool for this job. And they have SS cups so hopefully leaky cups will never happen again. After the job everything is running great. Super impressed with the performance and mileage with this engine. I was so glad to hear them say 7.3s are solid. I love all diesels, but after all the work I put into the cups I hope to use this truck for many years. If I'm ever in TX with it Ill bring it to these guys just for a run-through! Great video!

      Bought my 2002 dodge ram 2500 new. Still running strong at 402,000, doesn't have injector cups, doesn't have glow plugs. CUMMINS are among the best...ever made....

      I have the 2000 but have not had any issues with the injectors at all. the 7.3 is one helluva an engine is all I can say. Only thing I had go on mine was the water pump. I'm the original owner what a beast. This truck also has the 4.1 differential with the 6 speed tranny. yeah serious yank.

      I have a 2001 and a 2002 7.3 since new and I won't get rid of them. The newer diesel was ruined with all the emission crap. Mine have been running trouble-free all these years except for the rusted oil pans. They also have been snowplowing here in Buffalo NY and they aren't babied. Plus they don't have all those modules like the newer stuff. You made a great choice. Oh, change the oil every 4 to 5 thousand miles.

      I bought my '02 Ram 2500 5.9 commins new in '02...running strong, 404,000 uses no oil....7.3 also great engine....500,000 is a given with good maintenance....

    Have 2 2011 lml duramaxs one has 3 sled pulling seasons and a TON of HARD boosted launches with zero problems other than a drive shaft!!!!! Definitely go gm!!

    I have a 2019 Ram Cummins and I got the CP4 swapped to the CP3. I also use fuel additive every fill up and I do a oil change and fuel filters change every 10K.

    Awesome video. I have 2002 7.3 most of my problems have been with the old dry wiring hardness & turbo pedestal oil leak with 230K on it.. its a keeper for the rest of its life or mine, Waco Tx

      I'm in temple texas. I also have a 2002 f250 7.3L. I do need to change my turbo pedestal seals too but if I'm gonna take off the turbo just to do that I might as well rebuild the turbo so I won't have to take it off again down the road. Nothing wrong with the turbo though. I just need to have the money to do it first. I have 210k miles on mine.

    Great response to death wobble. One thing I would add, don’t just do front to back tire rotations, do cris-cross. It will prevent the cupping that aggressive off road tires get. I would recommend as often as needed possibly every 1000miles

I came out of the store and the display was reading " DPF cleaning in progress, continue driving" or something to that effect, you have to maintain a min 45 mph until it finishes, this was the 1st time it's done a regen @42k miles since new so I didn't want to interrupt it

    Tye straight diesel is the go to in all industrial and farming applications for a reason. When i was a kid tractor makers experimentee with v8s for a while but ended hard and fast

    Coming from a 20 year diesel owner, some good advice there. I bought a 2005 Duramax with factory tires on it about 5 years ago with 270,000 miles on it. Test drove, and it ran like the day it came off the lot. How do I know this? Simply, I test drove an '05 in '05. Loved that work truck, then some stoner pulled out in front of me across 4 lanes of traffic directly in front of me. I would have steered clear of her if I had replaced that abs electrical line that was damaged on the front left from a blow out, instead the tire locked up rendering no steering assistance on that side. FIX THINGS! Still have my twin turbo Duramax LBZ, butilt trans with it, and a few Cummins trucks. I have a '94 Cummins work truck that has never had one hickup. Still starts on the coldest days in snow, with no grid heater. Just pump that gas while cranking.

    I've been saying for years I'd never own another GM/Chevy product simply because of their electrical. My last one couldn't even make it month without a new electrical issue. Bad grounds, chaffing wires, you name it and it had it. Was one of the worst experiences.
    I'd much rather plan on replacing a transmission every 100k miles than deal with electrical problems like that again.

    All great advice. I do question the recommendation of dual stabilizers though. All that does is mask a part wearing out. But... I am speaking from a lifelong jeep enthusiast perspective at 66 yrs old. So ... not a diesel truck perspective and probably wrong. I bought my last van in Bryan Texas. I do hvac/r and installed the walk-in coolers freezers in the cafeterias in the schools/colleges there. I'll stop in when I need help at this place next time.

    My 20 year old 6.0 with 320k original miles is still on the road daily driven, never been opened, no mods, original egr, and still on its original transmission. Regular maintenance goes a long way.

      You got lucky some were good but some were absolute lemons it is a crapshoot….. I know a guy who did not abuse the engine or truck, but still ended up having to replace two engines under warranty……. after the third engine went in he sold the truck because he was sick if the issues

      @ralan350 yeah they were for sure hit or miss which is a shame because when it hits its an amazing truck. I don't baby mine but I'm also not overly rough on it. They seem to like a little abuse but not enough to lift a head gasket.

      ​@sjfk1306 that's funny. I have owned all three. Ford, Chevy and Ram. Out of 5 chevys not a problem with anything. Out of 3 Fords transmission failed in one. 1 had a bad vibration at 48 and 70. Ford worked on it 7 times in 8 months. Admitted it vibrated but I would have to live with it. Lived with it down one block and bought the 5th Chevy. Out of 2 Rams one was bought back by Ram because of transmission problems and one is scheduled now to have the rear end rebuit under warranty. I use these trucks to pull trailers daily. The Ford and Ram have been the most unreliable. As far as rust. None of them gave me a problem.

    I spent 20 years on the Industrial side of Cummins. Those years sold me on Fleetguard filters - especially oil filters. Number one cause of dusted engines is over servicing of the air filter, put a minder in the system and leave it alone until minder sees to much restriction. Never clean an air filter, too much risk of filter media damage - little tears = dusted engines. Use good oil and good fuel and good filters. Stay on top of valve adjustments, they're key to million mile engines - go by the manual. I can't count the number of grenaded engines I saw directly related to dropped valves due to valve adjustments. In the days of pre-emissionized engines valve adjustments were good idea. Cam lobes changed alot with emissions, as a result, valve adjustments became more important.

    I'm from Northern 😂Michigan I still have my 2000 F350 4wd drw it's now a plow truck my 6.7 powerstroke is a really good runner I have 85 thousand miles on it know no problems starts great in the winter the 2000 7.3 has 169 thousand on it so far it hasn't let me down the body is starting to rust

    I have two 2017 6.7 Fords and on one the CP4 went, I learned a lesson even though insurance covered it (water in the tank) and put a disaster kit on my other, now if that one goes it’s only a pump and a filter and back on the road. Well worth the money. They all run the same pump so get you one. A rebuild can cost as high as as $18,000

    Very nice. My 97 Dodge 12 valve Cummins hasn't been to a shop in at least 20 years. 250,000 Stock engine and transmission. Doesn't miss a beat and all of my interior plastics are still good. The Ford 7.3 is the only other diesel I would consider owning.

    My 2011 deleted Dodge is the best truck I’ve owned and foresee keeping it a longtime. Although yes the AC is terrible, I just lost an evap, so I pulled the dash and replaced the heater core and all the blend doors. Nightmare job but every 13 years isn’t bad…Great video

    I've been saying it for years. I have the most Fords in the shop because that's what is sold the most, and what everyone prefers. More on the road equals more in the repair shop. Same system, same issues, same percentage being repaired. Of course, there's some diehard dodge/chevy guys that'll always insist on them. But yes, it has more to do with maintenance, but proper maintenance.
    Also, driver, or hand care. Your workers will kill a truck whether you changed the oil or not. The way they take care of it makes a huge difference. I see 50k mile trucks look like they have 300k miles every day. I've also seen 300k mile trucks look like 50k mile. Those are normally the owners personal trucks.
    My '97 F350 w 7.3 is still on the road. It's died a couple times but a 30min cam sensor gets it back going.
    Wonder why the mic guy acted like wow, every oil change rotate the tires? Where have you been? It's always been that way. Guess you're not old enough to know these things, lol. People will bring me their trucks, tell me they have a vibration or wobble. I tell them to replace their tires. They'll go another 6 months and come in 6 more times telling me I haven't fixed the issue. When they finally put tires on, I don't hear from them. I don't blame them though, tires are expensive nowadays. I just wish people would listen and quit telling me what they think the issue is when 95% of the time they are wrong.

      We had a mixed fleet of chevy and ram the chevy had electrical issues like no tomorrow and were constantly in for service once they were brought back from the drilling sites. We had a couple rams that for the most part were good but 1 had no A/C another one had a no start issue. We did switch to a full ford fleet they were a lot more reliable but still had issues but that's expected on trucks that drive primarily on mud and dirt to drilling sites. Another chev issue we had was with the 4x4 would quit working I'm not 100% what the cause was as we dumped them prior to repairing again

    I have a 6.0. I’ve done a few upgrades, mostly known issues like EGR cooler etc. That said, it’s a very stock truck; no tune, no lift, no big wheels/tires. Tows our 9K boat & trailer without issue. Only 116K miles on a 2005 and I hope it’s my last truck.

    You forgot the dreaded 6.0 , oh there isn’t many left, I’m not talking spending $10k to fix problems that never should have existed. I’ve owned 4 5.9’s they are bulletproof, my 06 mega cab interior is still perfect, blend doors good, maintenance is excellent, never selling it it was my late wife’s baby .

    In my 20 years of driving diffrent diesel work trucks the Ford has left me stranded more than any other. I put a ton of miles on all my work trucks and they were serviced on schedule every time. He nailed the ram. The transmission, ac, and the interior components fell apart but the 5.9 was really good. We did have the notorious 14 powerstrokes and of course that went kaput on the freeway. Our latest trucks was the 6 6 duramax. I put 200k on that in no time with only one minor issue to the exhaust. When I buy a new personal truck I'm leaving ram and going duramax.

      Thank you, most of my friends and their families and my children and grandchildren are independent and do their own work be it mechanical or home maintenance. People don't seem to understand that the more you learn to do for yourself the more you understand and are able to learn as your knowledge base expands. When people ask why I just don't take my cars to a garage and let them do it, I simply say because I wouldn't learn anything that way. Was up at our jeep club wheeling yesterday and numerous people said to me, I hope I can still be wheeling when I'm your age. You just have to keep moving even if it hurts.

      Thankfully there are still some young people who are being raised right and are not afraid of hard work, the truth is if people are required to work for what they get and not to depend on handouts they will turn out alright. Problem with the homeless is they are being supported by people that think they are doing them a favor but are in fact encouraging their behavior.       @@blackpepe not to sure about that one. I’m in agreement with the Cummins, but having a job driving triaxle to industrial sites lets me see a lot of company vehicles and equipment.
      Strip model gas ford and Chevy completely dominate the industrial sites. Anybody with any diversified experience will know that as a fact as well.
      Certainly does not “prove” one truck better than the other. It’s just where the big bean counters found their cheapest bid. Why you very rarely see Toyota on the job sites. They are easily the most expensive base model full size pickup.

    A key to prolonging the life of the cp4 is keying on for 10 seconds before cranking. The barrels spin because of a vacuum condition. Which is why the chevy's with cp4's fail more often, they have no lift pump.

    To prevent death wobble get new adjustable track bar. And run at least 5 degrees or more of caster! Most common cause isn't tires it's worn out track bars and low caster

    '05 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Extended Cab Long Bed Duramax LLY here. One thing they did not talk about was a lift pump. I have the FASS Titanium dual filters. One of the best things you can put on a diesel engine. No air or water in the fuel it polishes the fuel. Pure fuel to the injectors. Pulls the fuel out of the tank and pushes it to the manual fuel pump. The manual fuel is not doing all the work takes pressure off it. The manual fuel pump should last longer. Just my two cents!

    I'm sure they know dodge didn't have DEF until 2013 on the 4th gen build. I like how they never really answered the question about which truck has the most issues. They aren't seeing new trucks that still have dealer warranties. Eh whatever.

      From my experience ram trucks are the best choice. Simplest in design. Have seen many of them with 200-600k miles on them. That’s why you see people using them for commercial uses.

    Great video my man.. I am a Dodge guy myself I just know them best, but there is a reason Ford has been at the top for so long and can sell their trucks at ridiculously high prices.. They are simply just a better truck. Most fleet vehicles are Ford so like they said, they are going to see more of them. the 6.7 has been around now for over a decade.. they are tried and true. if i have to take a trip across the country i would want a 5.9 or a 7.3 no exceptions.

      The reason ford is number "1" is clever marketing and insane deals through fleet leasing. Pay attention to their adds...it says "best selling FULL line of trucks. Ford made everything an "f" series, so everything from the maverick to the ford f8000 is included as well as all their vans...even the ones based on the focus. But one on one the gms twins have out sold the f-150- 350 for the last 3 years but because they are technically diffrent trucks ford gets to keep spinning their bs.also through fleet deals ford literally gives trucks away and includes them in their sales figures.

It is not new, all you need to do is type in "is the F150 the best selling vehicle".. no gimics there.. Again, I am a dodge guy, but I can face the facts. An equally equipped Ford is anywhere between 7%-11% more than Dodge or Chevy yet they still outsell them year after year. I would never buy a new Ford, or a new truck for that matter... but the reality is that It is objectively a superior truck. Period. If you can find something that disproves that, please let me know.

    I change my oil somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000 miles. Just hit 738,000 miles last week and it runs great, looks new internally. '05 Duramax LLY. I simply can't afford to use fuel additive for that many gallons but didmit here and there. Oem injectors lasted 610k and they were still working fine, I just had the opportunity to replace them with brand new ones.

    I work in the oilfields and we idle the hell out of our trucks!! Especially in N. Dakota when it is cold! They will have more idle hours than driving hours. Some of our 18 wheelers will have 20,000 miles and 12,000+ hours

    Im a die-hard cummins man, but i still dont have a bias that 1 is inherently "better" than the others. Like most people have said, it boils down to maintenance and treatment of the vehicle. When pepl ask me what they should buy i tell them whatever truck u like the most as far as looks and interior. Any of them will last a long time

    The #1 reason I wouldn't own a modern diesel is the fact that it's bad to let one sit and idle for long periods of time. I work in South Texas in the oilfield and a gas engine truck is the way to go IMO. They can sit and idle all day long pretty much trouble free.

    I’ve got a 2005 6.0 with 242,000 on it. I’ve done heads/studs/water pump/blue spring upgrade/new turbo/EGR del/new HPOP/FICM/Original injectors and SCT tune. That work with parts and labor is still less than 8 months of a new truck payment. Granted, I get about 13-15 mpg but I bought it to pull trailers. I almost bought a new dodge last week but after watching these videos on reliability ect. I decided to keep my 6.0 and get a Toyota pickup for my daily driver. I really don’t pull much anymore, I’m retired now so I guess it was just the idea of having a trouble free vehicle but it looks like that’s not possible anymore. The emission systems seem to be more problematic than anything. No new trucks for me at least for a few years.

      Holy shit all them parts at 242k? My goodness. 583k on my 2002 7.3 dually I haven’t touched the engine in a year it’s covered with dust and running on one battery. The engine is completely stock and original. The ZF6 had OD 6 fixed at around 450k, it’s cus I tow 10-15k with it to Austin and back every week. Large commercial grade generators I deliver with it. It’s not the fastest but damn I wouldn’t wanna be driving that 6.0

      @@thesunflowchannel1995have a 6.0 with the ZF6. Revving up to 4k haulin ass is pretty fun. Only problem I’ve had was a header stud busted but easy fix.

      @@TurdJesus Yeah only truck I’d feel comfortable beating on would be my compound turbo 5.9 24v, I wouldn’t dare go a little over on an oil change if I was driving a 6.0. I probably would throw money on some ARP head studs first thing because I already know those will fail, delete the EGR would be next, then I’d probably go with a fass fuel system I use it on my Cummins makes it pull cleaner. Then I’d sell it 🤣

      The owner of my local sandwich shop has a stock 6.0 excursion with 600k original motor, trans. I have a 2020 ram 6.7 that just crossed 100k and ive seen 1st gens with over 700k. Anything will last if you take care of it.

    Regarding the extended idle... My 2018 3.0L Powerstroke F150 had a regen function that would raise the idle to regen the DPF if the truck was idling. I'd be surprised if the 6.7 Powerstroke didn't have the same feature.

      It does. I have a 16 that’s been put on a “diet” and it still does the regen cycle but I’m pretty sure that’s done in the tuning to trick it.

    So I always wonder with these kind of videos, if in a given year Chevy sells three times as many trucks as dodge and Ford would a bias against Chevy appear given that More need to be fixed because More were sold? Anyway, I love the video. Thanks.

    Just to echo what was said in the video and other comments on here, if a truck is taken care of it’ll last a very long time. Just type “PTT W AROD, million mile super duty” in your search bar and he showcases one that rolled into his shop. It even still had the DPF system intact, although it was not same the factory filter.

    The 7.3 Powerstroke and old 12 Valve Cummins are the two best diesels ever made. Young drivers can beat the truck up to where everything falls apart, but those two engines will often outlast everything else on the truck. I love the 7.3 Fords.

    BG additives is a huge racket. My son was a mechanic and he was forced to push BG products. He actually got a kickback for every can he sold.

      Wrong. Fuel additive isn't a scam. The scam is the piss poor diesel fuel we get here in good ol usa. Run additive every fuel up

      What you’re saying makes a lot of sense, 7 years ago I drove my 06 ram to Mexico and it was giving me about 25 mpg on the way back after I fueled in Mexico, I drove 11hrs on a tank going through lots of hills, (stock pick up) here in the US I’ve never gotten close to that number, I live in north Tx where it’s flat. I get about 18 mpg

      Impossible. Diesel will be around forever. To many industries depend on it. For instance, mining. Can not have any gasoline engines underground period and electric motors do not hold up under the extreme dust situations.

      Additives do work. I run hotshot and Howes diesel defender in my 16 peterbilt 1 million miles and only had 1 def issue and 2 injectors that's it. Started running it in my 2nd gen cummins as well and noticed a big difference in the way it ran and I got better mileage as well.
      Adding more lubricity to diesel will only help everything in the system, and keep your pump and injectors working at their best.

    For oil and fuel filter changes it really depends on alot of factors, HOWEVER, to be safe, change it early, use good recommended oils, the correct filters, use a good lubricity fuel additive and buy fuel from a place that sells alot of it. Fluids flters and fuel. Take care of those 3 and youre good.

    I’ve owned all the ford diesels, deleted they are reliable, change that oil at 3 to 4 k change air filters, mine have been reliable very very reliable, 6.0 is still my favorite

    1999 F350 Super Duty with the Powerstroke 7.3 and at 300,000 miles, it runs like it has 300 miles. I was a GM man for most of my life but became a Ford guy when GM vehicles let me down too many times. Preventive Maintenance is key!

    I have a 2022 6.7 Ford Tremor, 98k miles, not one single problem. I use Archoil ar6500 in the fuel and Amsoil OE 10w30 diesel oil...
    Just put an order in for a 2024 F350 Tremor 6.7 high output.
    The Ford 6.7 powerstroke is a very reliable platform. And imo Ford makes the best overall truck.
    But the emissions junk ruins diesel trucks

    Big guy needs to do regular maintenance on his body to avoid breakdowns in the future, maintenance is not exclusively for mechanical objects.
