My Spanish property is 2 km from the coast, on the eastern side of Malaga. The largest congregation of tourists that hit the beaches in summer are the Spanish from further north. They far outnumber any nationality. Last summer I was in Chamartín station in Madrid and it was like a refugee situation with thousands of people getting on the trains to Alicante which were leaving every 20 minutes. I've seen entire families rock up on the beach in the morning and they stay all day long. If anyone is leaving cigarette butts on the beach it's them. If you're an ignorant arsehole it doesn't matter what country you come from. We need to stop blaming foreigners for everything and look a bit closer to home.

On the other hand, did you take the cigarette butts to the hotel to show them to the hotel staff to embarrass them for something that is NOT their responsibility, or did you not find public trash cans on your way to the hotel to dispose of them? Since you were in Mallorca, did you have time to go to Magaluf to pick up the beer bottles and the sea of garbage left by your compatriots and leave them at the doors of their rooms as well?

The thing with banning smoking in outside bars and restaurants is a huge majority of Spanish people smoke. Actually more than I expected before I moved here two years ago from Germany. It would only hurt the businesses themselves. Look at any table and at least one or more smoke. At least here in Zaragoza in fact most of my Spanish friends/family smoke. It just wouldn't work, not after the restrictions were in place during Covid.

@joeshmoe883 it's true from what I've seen so far. Lived in Germany for 16 years, and after the smoking laws came in, i.e., no smoking inside. Many people gave up as they don't have the tropical climate as we do here. Plus cigarettes cost a lot more than here. But here so many people smoke, and iquos cigarettes are also very popular.

My wife and I visited the Alicante area and Benicassim during the Rototom reggea festival (we had no idea it was ongoing at the time) and virtually EVERYONE around was smoking cigarettes openly everywhere outside and on the beach. My wife has a thyroid related eye disease called Graves disease which is severely aggravated by cigarette smoke. I don't think it's fair for smokers to make us avoid public places due to THEIR bad habits. Improper disposal of butts is the least of it because we can't even go out in crowded areas, which is everywhere in the tourist season! IDK how Spain can afford health care costs when smokers carelessly CAUSE needless tobacco related illnesses, which ends up costing non-smokers too in terms of increased health care premiums. It's a rude and pathetic habit which should be banned!

No one has done as much damage to the country's integrity since the transition to democracy as the PSOE with its disgusting amnesty law which has reawakened Catalonian separatists. Not only that, but the issue of immigration is practically not mentioned in the government and the ruling party keeps favouring Morocco in all its geopolitical decisions. It is also trying to cover up a huge corruption scandal during the pandemic with personal accusations against relatives of members of the opposition. It is repulsive. We need Europe to step in.

The Visigoths, or Western Goths, were displaced by the Han Chinese in the late 4th century, and moved west southwest, until they entered Italy and sacked Rome in 425CE. Along the way, they picked up the Christian creed, with a somewhat Orthodox flavour, and kept moving west until there was no more west left, settling in the Northern Iberian Peninsula. The Muslim invasions pushed them back into Calalunya, across the Pyrenees, and there they stayed.
West of them, along the north coast, were mainly Celts, inland, Frankish, and in the south, Romanised Carthaginians. When the Umayyad invaded, they found the Catalans by far the most multinational, with large numbers of Jews embedded, and soon the academic culture of Toledo and Girona developed a pan-cultural flavour, developing the Jewish Kabballah mysticism alongside a translation culture which transposed large amounts of First Caliphate mysticism into Latin, alongside works of Greek philosophy translated into Arabic in Baghdad and then back into Latin, which would otherwise have been lost (although hopes exist of texts from Herculaneum and Timbuktu).
Therefore, when the Muslims lost power in 1492, the new Monarchies were forced to recognise the Portuguese were their peers, and after the exhaustion of Mexican gold in the late 16th Century, regional politics became more significant, and the Civil War of the 1930s did little to suppress that. Franco may have ruled by power, he did not rule by love, and the Catalan identity has issues with fear. This has continued in recent years, and the 2017 Referendum, although declared illegal by Madrid and much sabotaged, covered a large enough area and economic base to qualify as a valid act of self-determination by a semi-autonomous Region. As it sets a painful precedent for many other Nations with semi-autonomous regions, the matter remains in abeyance.

Agree with you completely--people should clean up after themselves. Still in agreement but please observe that smokers have no compunction about tossing their butts anywhere they wish. Even people who would not consider tossing a tissue paper on the street do not think it's offensive to do so with a butt. Would you want to carry a burned out cigarette butt for one or two blocks and then toss it? Nope. Once that cigarette has burned down to a butt the smoker wants nothing to do with that burned out, saliva saturated, nicotine coated, disgusting smelling stump. Meanwhile, that carcinogenic trash gets washed down the gutter, into our groundwater, or out to see where it poisons other living things. Worse, is the filtered end of the cigarette that contains even stranger chemicals. The smoker doesn't care. My nanny town raised the cigarette tax so it costs $19 for one pack of 20. I just discovered this after seeing more old guys smoke their ciggies all the way down to their fingers.

On the football matter, that's the whole worldwide problem these days. Self-important, corrupt, loud-mouthed bullies pushing themselves forward into positions of authority. You may say it has always been so but one now sees that with open communications and the way society works these days, it has become much worse than the "golf club secretary" as people used to say.

Cigarettes are biodegradable , the healthiest place to smoke a ciggy has got to be an open beach or open space . Also part of the enjoyment of having a meal or drink ,is to have a good smoke of a cigarette or fat cigar after it . People shouldn’t be so selfish & to begrudge smokers from having a good smoke . After all smokers have to put up with heathy people who moan .

Smoking ban, what a joke who's going to enforce it? don't get me wrong I agree with the ban, the beach I go to has a ban on dogs but all the locals walk their dogs on the beach and crap everywhere (in Spain) also cycling on the promenade is banned but never enforced by the local police, so I would say those headlines are just BS plus I see more Spaniards smoking than tourists?

Just make the smokers carry ash trays. I do where ever I go in the world. I do only smoke cigarillos with no filters. If you have never smoked, you won't understand. Smokers have been forced outside (rightly so in this day and age), don't make it more difficult for us. The ban has killed thousands of pubs in the UK. Don't let it hapen in Spain. Here in Greece, they are a little more tolerant to smokers. Yes we know it's bad for our health. Along with anything you enjoy ingesting. Where do I start?

I am a smoker and I smoke when I go to the beach. The actual act off smoking is not the problem. It is the inconsiderate bunch of people who leave their cigarette butts buried in the sand. I usualy take a can of bear or fanta with me to the beach and put all my dogends in the empty tin to be disposed of in an appropriate place when I leave the beach. Many people leave banana skins and orange peel on the beach so are they going to ban eating fruit.
