I TEST DROVE the New 2024 Tacoma! Driving Impressions from a 3rd Gen Owner

- In today's extra exciting video, I test drive the all new 2024 (4th gen) Toyota Tacoma! This is perhaps the most highly anticipated midsized truck of this year, with many changes--like the move from the V6 engine from the previous generation to a turbocharged 4 cylinder i-Force one, an available coil spring multi-link rear suspension, electric power steering, new colors, new grades... I could keep going on and on! But nonetheless, experiencing this truck through test driving it on the streets of Malibu, CA was a thrill, especially coming from owning and daily-driving a previous model year Tacoma. Did watching this video change your impressions of this truck?

I'm still driving my tacoma I've had for 20 years. Still strong. 245,000 miles
It was an absolute pleasure driving the new Tacoma with you!
Right back at you 👊🏼
Quit vandalizing this channel. Stick to national parks, TB
Awesome video Chloe...love to see your excitement for the New Tacoma. Nice features on the Tacoma.
Great video Chloe! Such an improvemnt over the last gen. Can't wait to see how great the hybrids are!
Thanks Jon, and I’m excited about the hybrids as well!
If by improvement you mean a bunch of useless stuff that'll break easily being thrown in just to jack up the price twice as high as it should then sure I guess it's an improvement..
@@nukiesduke6868exactly. If they weren’t getting paid for these videos I highly doubt they’d have the same opinions. Let’s call it like it is, They know the new trucks are going to help with content & their channels but that’s about it. It’s literally pointless to upgrade your Toyota every refresh or model change. if you’re going to be trading in your vehicle after every few years, just to upgrade to the highest trim or new model, you might as well buy a Chevy or something. I specifically just bought a 2023 TRD OR a couple months ago because I was not interested in having the first model year nor was I interested in the 4 cyl turbo. The 4th generation is also too overstyled for me. Likes like they tried too hard
@@GraV21 Yeah not only that but rushing to buy the first thing of a new generation is bad. At that point they're still working the kinks out.
Sport might be my first pick-up 🛻
It was fun watching you enjoy that ride! Your demo video definitely makes me think twice about dissing the first model year right out of the chute. Just bought a used '23 a year ago, so not ready for a new one yet.
Awesome stuff Chloe! Your video was the one I was waiting for!
Thanks Jason 😊 Glad to hear you enjoyed!
Love your passion for the Tacoma.
The new look and color of that blue crush metallic is beautiful! Awesome video and awesome to see Mateo!
So awesome, you get to get invited to these events, and provide a great review
Thank you so much for this Chloe. Always the best Tacoma Vids!
I really enjoyed this, I found this to be very informative and I love how detailed you were. I hope you do another for the off road trim. Thanks and happy holidays!
I love your excitement, Chloe. I can tell you love your Tacoma. You take such good care of it. You also have excellent taste in modifications. Nice overview. Well done.
I love the way it looks and now it’s great to see someone driving one. I need to wait and see your off road video though.
Great test drive. Awesome you got to share impressions with Tacoma Beast.
Such a great video! Can't wait to see what's in store for when you get a 24' Taco!
Completely new to the Tacoma community but good to see so many enthusiasts , I just picked up my 2023 trd sport slowly putting my build together but great content you put out here
That beginning must be the biggest smile on the internet!! thanks for all the info!
Nice styling, yes--but that Jumbotron computer screen is over the top ridiculous!
Agreed
I don't know what they were thinking.
Great Video Chloe! You looked liked you had a blast and a lot of fun!
The Gen4 Tacoma is growing on me a bit. I didn't like the new look at first, but certain trims are starting to look pretty good to me. I also was not excited about the turbocharged engine, but I am open to the idea. My biggest concern is longevity. I have no plans to get rid of my Gen3 Tacoma, but if I was forced out of it then I do think I would give the new Gen4 a hard look.
Awesome collaboration guys!!
Great video and thank you! Finally a test drive.
5:16 0-60 in 8-9 seconds never looked so exciting 😂
Probably closer to 7 seconds now with the extra torque delivered quickly by a turbo. I've been in the Wrangler 2.0T's that have similar power numbers and they get up and go!
Good review! Thanks! 👍
Another fun video. I could see it in your smile, so when are you getting one? Thanks for posting.
Thanks, Chloe! Great information.
Very cool video and thanks for sharing your experience with us!. I look forward to seeing them out on the trails soon.
Truck look great I can’t wait to see how the new 4runner look like awesome reviews ❤
Awesome perspective ... Love your videos Chloe ! :)
WOW! Cannot wait to test drive one.
Can’t wait for the off-road video!
Great video! Best Tacoma yet !
Thanks, Chloe! Tbh I previously didn't think much of the '24 Tacoma- I didn't really care for the re-design, nor the idea of a 4 cylinder. But seeing your footage and your reaction :) I find myself rethinking everything! I have a 3rd gen TRD Sport and have no interest in going off-road, so your comments about the 2024s road handling definitely caught my interest. I will have to check this thing out and test drive when it arrives in San Diego!
Yes, it’s certainly worth a test drive! 😊
Man, I never had a Gen 3, so even if I test drive it, I would not know the difference.
Chloe, you make the blue look awesome! Just waiting for you to intro your 24 Taco. I am a fan of the v6 hopefully a supercharger option would have been an option, turbo four is alright. Excellent content and expressions of joy!
we need dodge levels of supercharger for tacoma's
Great video! Thank
You for the infomation
I was waiting anxiously for this video, I was hoping for the TRD PRO to be the star of the show, but the sport is nice too, looking forward to the TRD PRO test drive.
It would be awesome to test out the Pro and compare 😁
I think the pro is gonna be smoother!!
Thanks Chloe, very informative. I currently have a 2018 TRD Sport long bed, eyeing the 2024 TRD Sport short bed this time around. Still waiting to see how much better the hybrid performs over the non-hybrid. Not a fan of the black hood scoop though, hope they have a color matching option available. Looking forward to your Off Road video. Keep up the great work!
Never, ever buy the first year of a new model... especially with so many new things to go wrong like this one has.
❤awesome video, i really like the upgrades especially the disk brakes and rear suspension but for now I will stick with my 22 OR AC
I love the new styling !
Nice video Chloe. You lucky you got to drive it. Even if it was non hybrid you can tell the drivetrain will be different. It looked like the truck moved off the line!
i LOVE YOU. I follow you on your videos. Thank YOU for all your videos and for the knowledge you give us. THANKS
You’re so cute!! Are we allowed to say that? Love the review and thanks for the review. Love the enthusiasm.
Excited for the new Tacoma. I have the same model you have in the same color.
A gem 💎 of a video!! Well done. Very informative!
I am onboard with this 2024 Tacoma!
At 6’1” am hoping to have the leg room and head room.
Tundra is just too much truck and won’t fit in my garage.
If it gets any bigger it’s going to need twin turbos
I am exited too for the new Taco
Hi Chloe, great video as always. I just made the transition from a 2010 Nissan Frontier to 2023 Toyota Tacoma and just leased the 2023 Tacoma SR5 4X4 and like it a lot. I leased for 3 years because I figured with the 2024 they would need to work out some bugs with the new generation. I did like the turbo in the Ford Ranger I road tested but decided to go with the Tacoma due to the know reliability and of course the price was better than the Ford. I do enjoy your channel and like to see the content you put out including the mods which are awesome. Keep up the great work! 😊
As a former Frontier owner (2005 Nismo) I will say, interior wise, I really liked the frontier better than my current 3rd Gen interior. The storage space was also better. What I miss from my frontier that the Tacoma doesn't have. Bigger glove box, mine had lights in the glove box, and center console. I could fit large cups in the center compartment no problem. The rear seats folded in two different ways. There's a tray at center dash that is great for storage. Small cubbies under steering, storage under stereo was great. Back seats, center fold down arm rest with cup holders. Everything here on the frontier was superior. The fact that the 3rd gen doesn't have as good as an interior space as my 2005 frontier furiates me to this day. 37k truck and you can't give us the storage?? Not even a light in the small glove box? Other than that, the tacoma's functionality is the best and I still love my truck. Just wish it had rear disc brakes, better interior space and storage, and better seating position.
@@90FirstGenPGTI 100% agree with you on those things especially the leg room in the rear seats. It also appears at least with the 2023 Tacoma the width of the rear truck bed seems smaller. I used to have a cap on my frontier, I may have gave it a bigger appearance, but it appears to be shallow on the width side. All in all there is some give and take but so far going from a 13 year old truck to the new options in my 2023 kind of made those issue relevant to me at least. Now the 2024 looks sweet and after my lease is up in 2026 that truck with have all the bugs worked out I am sure and the 2023 has rotors in the rear. Oh I did test ride the 2023 frontier and the seats were very uncomfortable. They dug in the side of my legs just sitting there, so that was one of the things that turned me off for the newer frontier.
Cool vid..prices aren't too crazy. Yet, I'm waiting on the Pro before I make a pick.
I went back and watched a couple of 3rd gen first drives and it really puts things in perspective. Hold on a bit before you buy this new truck to see how things shake out for a couple of years.
I enjoyed the video. Nice seeing productions models being tested versus prototypes. I went to the Seattle Auto Show hoping to check it out, but all they had was a prototype and it was locked. I do have a question. I do know that the scoop on the TRD Sport is non-functional and I was surprised that you said it can be taken off. Personally, I don't like it, so I was curious to know how it can be taken off. Do you know how?
I so love this truck!!!
Speaking from an automotive engineering point of view who owns the 1st gen and 2nd gen Tacoma. I can honestly say this model is nice but not ready. The small turbochargers engine will experience lots of wear and tear as a stock model. Most Tacoma owners don’t do stock they upgrade tires, lift kits, grill numbers ect. That it self will put more stress on the engine and run the risk of part failures. This truck is the 1st year of the 4th generation which means recall and production parts issues. The hybrid system is another challenge yes it will help improve power but undergo a beating. After 10 year the battery system will need to be replaced another inconvenience to the owner. Plus the gas tank went from 21.1 gals to 18 gals with no change to the MPGs. Overall the price of the truck about 45k not worth the troubles. I rather buy a 3rd generation for 10k less and use the savings for modifications. Best of luck to you if you do decide to buy new maybe wait 3 year by than the issue will be gone.
Awesome show..
Great review Chloe! When driving, you seemed to be laid back and low? At your stature do you feel it would accommodate someone a bit shorter at 5,4? Wondering if you were able to raise the seat height? I like to be able to ride higher than what you were sitting. Thanks again for the great review!
Thanks Chloe for the review of driving impressions. After owning a 3rd Gen for a few months, the drivetrain just bothered me too much. Glad to see Toyota improved the overall feel and performance.
EPS has practically no feel at all.
Joining the discussion with my two cents on the Gen4 Tacoma. Like many here, I was initially skeptical about the new design and turbocharged engine. However, seeing the detailed reviews and user experiences, it's growing on me. I'm curious about how the new engine will hold up in terms of longevity and maintenance, especially compared to the legendary durability of the older models. Also, how does it stack up for off-road enthusiasts? Would love to hear thoughts from anyone who's had a chance to test its limits. Great community and insights here!
The higher torque should make it better off road right off the bat. These motors are already in use and production over seas for the past 8 plus years. I'd still wait until this model is out for a few years before looking at getting one though.
I have a 2022 TRD sport in bluecrush. I must admit this one looks better inside and out. Gorgeous trucks. I still love mine though ❤️
Great video Chloe. #tacogang 🌮
I pretty much like everything they did here. I would probably opt for the iforce Max in a couple years IF I can’t swing a new Land Cruiser. Four payments left on my 3rd Gen so excited to get that paid off and take a break from financing!🥵
I love the new look but I’m guna hang on to my 2021 for a bit
Hi Chloe! How was the responsiveness of the LCD screen? I have the basic stock screen and it’s soooo slow. Also with the new 4 cylinder turbo engine, will there be an increased miles per gallon? Thanks!
Definitely made me think that I might not have to spend the money for a hybrid. You seemed excited about the performance of the turbo 4.
Toyota did listen to its customers yet majority of them are still complaining.
I'm all for the new 4th gen I love it
Thanks for the video! I just got my '23 Tacoma 6 weeks ago knowing that the 24s were coming soon. I know, as Chloe said, all midsize trucks are going to 4 cyl turbo but I wanted that 6 cyl and I didn't want a turbo. Now I do wish that my Gen 3 had a couple of the Gen 4 "improvements" (don't like that huge screen) but I may be in the market for another Tacoma in 2035 😀
Just picked up a ‘23 off road in lunar rock 2 weeks ago. The old school design should last a decade or more.
I like the analog gauges and stuff. Not a fan of a lot of the stuff on the '24 other than the seats. I can't stop staring at the head rests - they seem way better.
`23 is better and will last way longer than the turbo 4.
Just got a 2024 Frontier. V6, 310 hp, long bed, 9 speed trans that puts a gen 3 Taco to shame.
Still feels like a truck. Love it.
@@whodey59 Are you still comparing the two? You are watching and commenting on a Tacoma video. I haven't done either for Nissans. Glad you like your truck; I like mine
I’ll be getting the gen 4 Tacoma really like the new body style
I think I will wait a year or so before I get one ,I'm still enjoying my third gen sport.
Happy with my 2022
Seeing her get so Giddy when they did the pull was awesome lol
I’d wait till the 2nd or 3rd model year but it’s a great looking truck can’t wait to own a 2WD SR base model with a stick!
Very nice truck I want one
the lighter steering is due to electric steering as opposed to hydraulic. Hydraulic steering imo is what you want for off-road. Helps to truly feel the tires on the terrain.
Hi Chloe, I have a 2023 V6 Tacoma 4x4 sport. I am on the fence as to whether I should do the overland tune on my current Tacoma or getting the new 2024 4 cyl turbo. How would you say they compare? Without the tune the new Tacoma seems to drive a little better with more torque and smoother gearing.
MPG on the 4 cyl is almost identical to the V6....hmm. Maybe I'll hang onto my '23 sport
If you don't get the hybrid you can forget about gas mileage improvement.
@@icosthop9998 the hybrid will probably be at minimum, a 2k premium for a 5/10 MPG increase. Per toyota's website, this would bring the high volume offroad and sport trims to nearly 45k before destination and TTL. I feel like the appeal would be lost on many existing 3rd gen owners to upgrade at this price point.
@@iamshevanel True
After reading a lot of comments, maybe I'll get a 2023 that someone trades in for a 2024.
I mean a newer chassis... wider stance (3" for the SR versions up tp 6" for the OR and PROs). mainly the fenders and the cab stays about the same...Gas tank on the passenger side now (gas cap still on driver side)...The disconnect-able sway bar which gives more or less a 4" drop of clearance...... the new springs on the rear end.. mpg closer to the ranger as well as the torque and power... the options that'll be available. I'm tempted .. and the fact that the engine has been tested on the lexus since 2021 with no issues or recalls.. It seems very reliable......
GREAT COUPLES ❤️
This year I purchased my first brand new truck! A 2023 Lunar Rock double cab, 6 speed manual of course. The Taco loves off-roading with super low gear ratio with the manual and it’s probably the most reliable truck you can buy right now. But I’ve got my Toyota dealer trying to get me a Trail Hunter 😅 The way I see it, if I can have Toyota factory warranty all the upgrades I would do anyways and I don’t have to spend hours building it, that’s just more time I’m not worrying about break downs on my dime, and more time using my truck for work in the patch or getting out into that sweet Alberta / BC backcountry ⛰️
But then many will say “ But sir that thing will break down immediately just like a Ford” Ya cool story man I just don’t think Toyota would put this turbo I4 in a Land Cruiser if it meant tarnishing, the reputation that it’s had for having legendary reliability, longevity and off-road cred…
I’m thinking of getting the pre runner do you think it handles good on the road?
Bring the hilux here without the ridiculous epa diesel. Gets like 30 mpg. Awesome video can't wait to see one in person .
I appreciate Mateo's inclusion. I was just poking around Tacoma Beast after debating whether to buy parts for my 3rd gen or see about buying a new 4th gen after all these videos.
Hey Chloe, noticed you both were impressed by the acceleration over the 3rd gen. How does the new Taco(non-hybrid) compare to a 3rd gen V6 with the OTT tune? I take it the OTT tune gives the 3rd gen similar torque numbers but more horsepower from the dyno sheets shown by OTT.
I’ve been waiting for someone to answer that question.
Me too
How’s the transmission does it hunt gears as the 3rd gen does?
I love it, only complaint would be why offer the PreRunner in two-wheel drive only? I love what they did removing the seats and adding the storage in the cabin but I can't do a 4x2. I think im just going ti bite the bullet and gi fir a TRD PRO, love the wider stance and additional capability/options.
prerunners always been 2wd with rear lockers
That low end torque is from the turbo like what you said. I felt that way when I drove the 3.7 ecoboost that came with the Explorer when it first came out..
And we all know how great those ecoboost engines are…
@@GraV21 yup! the ecoboom! with tons of carbon deposits..😆 and the turbos wore out at 80k miles if you drive them hard!
@@sdboy1978 granted, Toyota is typically well designed but maybe instead of the turbo crapping out at 80k, it will happen at 100k with Toyota. That’s not even mentioning the premature wear from the forced induction on the 4 cyl engines. Also, correct me if I’m wrong, it Toyota molds their turbos to the engine so you can’t just unbolt it & replace. Im interested to see what the Toyota techs have to say about them in the Tacomas once they start coming in for work.
@@GraV21 maybe toyota turbos will go to 100k to 120k if driven hard! As with the technical stuff, I have no idea..
Will hold out for the 86 inch screen.
Chloe, I currently own a 2019 Tacoma 4X4 SR Base Access Cab 2.7 liter 4-cylinder Long Bed model truck. It is what I call a "work truck". I really love it because it fits my needs perfectly. However, these new trucks look really nice too! Do you know if they will offer a Base Model Work Truck? If so, I'd love to see you evaluate it as well for us work dudes! Thank you!
Hi Chloe, so cute to see you so excited by this truck. I have a 2021 manual sport now and definitely would never trade it for a turbo 4 (complexity and durability concerns). Also I don't like the all digital dash as it will be super expensive to replace when needed. The exterior styling I like but that's not going to get me to buy one.
Good luck to you living in the past. Looks like one of your goals in life will be to be more of a Baller. Then you wouldn’t worry so much about durability concerns because you wouldn’t keep your cars as long.
I agree, simplicity is what made Toyota reliable. I don't like the electric power steering, or the turbo 4cyl or the lack of leaf springs I'll keep my 19 tacoma. Mabey I'm not "Balller" enough, or mabey I like having money more than looking like I have money , I swear, Gen Z will die in debt never owning anything.
@@chrisquintana3877 you never really truly own anything. For example, if you end up paying off your mortgage, you still have property tax and if you don’t pay that they will take your home. With a car purchase as soon as you pay it off you still don’t truly own it because it Has to be registered and if you don’t register it, they will take your car if you use it on public roads
@@sammyjammy6647 I hear you , but fyi not all states pay property tax. I own my home free and clear , but I pay 9k a year for property tax, I'm in austin tx area.
registration is for the maintance and construction of roads property tax is for the elected officials to sit on there ass and not do anything lol
Sounds like the wrx motor 🤔 i like it!
I prefer the smaller form factor, blandness, simplicity, and legendary reliability of the now vintage 1st gen. V6 4x4 Tacoma, but the 4th gen. is ok. Also, the prices there probably going to ask for those things are probably insane. I would rather invest that money into stocks, and crypto. Great review Chloe.
I enjoy driving manual transmission vehicles
Puts a smile on my face
$42k for a base Sport?! I get it that this is an upgrade but that's $7k more than the base MSRP for a 2023. Unfortunately many people will finance these with crazy terms so Toyota can charge whatever they want.
I agree. The Tacoma is not for the average person for everyday. not practical for kids, strollers , groceries….after taxes, etc you are near 50k…you bet there will be markups in some regions of the country…
Buy a 23 before the 24. Pricing is not going to go down
Instead of a six year bank note, I would get a seven year bank note.
I would have to get extra options though.
That 42k with no options is pretty steep. 😳
Being a First year series, I would have to get extended warranty and gap insurance.
@unikorkontroller
You're absolutely right about *_"Crazy Terms"_* .
Hearing her excitement , I gotta get one.
@@icosthop9998 The fact that there are 7-year loans should be an indicator that the car market has gone insane. Even with good resale the Tacoma is still a depreciating asset. This is why Americans are so broke.
Good video...Gen 3, V6 Taco owner. I have a 2021 BMW 4 cly, twin scroll turbo...great smooth power...but concerning for longevity/reliability. Plus what $8000 to $10,000 grand more. And probably STILL has rust issues on undercarriage and rear drums like my problem.
Hi Chloe, Good for you, because you really deserve it. and you really look good in blue, are you going to put a full roll bar cage in this one.
They should’ve mounted the screen lower on the dash. I love tech stuff, but that looks like a huge distraction.
New release is gold mine of content creation. Solid? Make a video. Any problem? Make a video. You can’t loose.
@4.05 how do you find the information on each trim? Have they released one that compares the trims?
Have 12k on my 23 Canyon Denali. No issues. These trucks are tested so well before release there won't be any issues. Except for the software gremlin in the GM twins that plagued the first releases that have since been fixed
people are skeptical about the 4cyl engine turbo but it still a reliable engine. In the Philippines my dad’s has a 07’ hilux and 08’ fortuner both 4cyl engine still running great up to this day. 4cyl is been goin for decades in Asia. I know People here in the US still not convinced with the engine yet but it would be worth it in the end
I thought the Solar Octane color was a 2023 exclusive. If I’m wrong, I hope they have it for the Trailhunter!!
Why is Tacomabeast so smitten?
7:14 lol
Totally. Dude definitely was trying to be smooth.
I would like to have the SR trim 2 wheel drive with the TSS off-road package, but I don't agree with paying full size truck prices.
What you’re feeling was the turbo on boil…
