4Runner or Tacoma?! A Tacoma Owner's Thoughts…

  • In today's video, I put my Toyota Tacoma to the side and spend a week in a 2024 TRD Pro 4Runner! Despite being very similar vehicles, this was quite the change for me. But I certainly enjoyed doing everything I normally do in my truck, with this SUV instead. These are my thoughts about the 4Runner... what are yours?!
#ToyotaPartner Toyota USA lent me this vehicle for review for a week. All opinions are my own.

As a 2023 4Runner owner, I can confidently say that it’s a beast. I have driven it on snowy mountains and on Moab trails, and it’s STOCK! Even though the new one is coming out soon, the one I own has gain my trust tenfold so I wouldn’t trade it for the world!

Damn Chole you forgot about the most important feature of the 4Runner the powered rear window. I love that feature on the 4Runner drop the front windows and hit the rear and let all that stale air out. If you got some pups load them up and let them drool out the rear window. It's whole different feeling with that rear powered window when driving, comes in handy. If my 2008 FJ Cruiser TT had that feature I would be content. If I ever got another vehicle it would definitely be the 4Runner just the fact that everything is inside and accessible.

I just picked up a 24 Pro 4Runner in Underground. I’m upgrading from a 21 SR5 Premium 4Runner. These are the best road trip vehicles I’ve ever owned. Add in the off-road ability and old school Toyota reliability and it’s my favorite vehicle I’ve ever owned. Plus you can get Pro’s on the east coast for MSRP or under.

I've got both. A 2022 Tacoma SR5 and a 2023 4Runner Off-road Premium. I love both and use them both for different situations. The Tacoma for hauling stuff that is messy or too large for the 4Runner. Use the 4Runner for everyday errands, to the dog park and when the weather is at its worst. The 4Runner goes through anything.

I bought my 4Runner TRD pro last month, same color, I traded in my 2018 Taco TRD off road. I had a neck fusion (c5 to c7) and the 4 runner is much easier to get in and out of for me. Ive lost a few MPGs, but the overall ride is much smoother. My wife has a 2020 Tundra TRD off road so we still have a truck. I paid 39k for my Taco and got 30.2 k after 6 years. The shorter wheel base is also a plus for the 4Runner.

I have a lifted 2021 Tacoma and my mom has a stock 2023 4Runner. Both are trd off-road 4x4 models. I enjoy both of the vehicles and each have their purpose. The 4Runner fits my mom’s needs more than the Tacoma because she is always transporting our dogs and other passengers so the back seat room is great! She also kept it stock because the suspension is very soft and comfortable. I use my truck to transport furniture and other appliances while also off-roading it pretty hard once a month. I also never have passengers in my backseats so the lack of leg room doesn’t cause any issues.

IMHO hope you can reach out to Toyota and snag an MSRP-or-better deal on a 24 Taco. There are already 15yrs of 5th gen 4Runner content on CZcams. You do a great job reviewing/documenting modifications on these and imagine you'll see much better subscriber/revenue opportunities with a 4th gen Taco. It's nice to see mod content from your perspective where you keep daily-driveability in the equation.

I had a 2023 Tacoma TRD Pro that I traded for a 2024 4-Runner TRD Pro. I don’t really have a need to haul items that require a truck bed, except mountain bikes. The bikes wouldn’t fit in the 5’ bed, yet have a Thule, so no big deal. I had previously owned a 2015 4-runner off road with KDSS for eight years. I feel like the Tacoma Pro was more exciting to drive off road and loved the visual on the shocks, yet the wheelbase made parking more difficult. I missed my old 4-Runner as was more practical for my needs. I like the indoor cargo area, instead of buying a bed cover. I like the shorter wheelbase and less shifting on hills. I’m glad I made the switch after 7 months back to the 4-Runner.

I bought a new off road premium 4runner, in January. I'm old, (80), so I wanted a vehicle with known, good reliability, as I'm also handicapped. I only drive on regular roads, but love to watch overlanding videos, something I'm unable to now do. My son, has a 30 month old, off road Toyota tacoma, it has 35,000 miles, with just regular services, and no issues. I decided on my vehicle due to the reliability of Toyota's and, also, watching, Lifestyle overland who drives a 4runner with high mileage, over every type of terrain, and a similar size Lexus. People complain about poor gas mileage, I find this strange as, I see most drivers, driving at 80 mph here in the US, on 55 mph roads, while, seemingly, only getting about 10 or 12 miles to the gallon driving off road? I normally drive at the speed limit, or 5 over, I'm averaging 20 mpg since purchse, after 600 miles.

Recently I purchased my “ retirement” vehicle. It was a difficult decision choosing between a Taco and a 4Runner. In the end, I decided on a 4Runner. Given the grandkids and our retirement plans of an I-81 and Route 66 tour, that tipped the scales. Also, I ended up getting an 02 Taco so that figured in as well. Can’t go wrong with either.

I recently tried switching from a TRD OR 3rd gen Tacoma to a TRD Pro 4R. I'm now back in a TRD OR Tacoma. I have a utility trailer, so I thought I wouldn't miss the bed. I was wrong. You don't realize how often you just throw shit in the bed that you either dont want inside, or wont fit. The head unit is comically bad. To the point of making the 360 cams nearly useless. It's SUPER picky on tire/wheel balance. Wheel shake is almost a constant at 60. I'm used to bad MPGs, but the 4R is abysmal at all but 60mph flat road. I was getting 12-14 in town. The 6 speed in the Tacoma is a lot smoother than the 5 speed. 4R doesnt like hilly interstate. Dropping into 4th puts the 4R in higher RPM, which isn't ideal for comfort or MPGs. The 5th and 6th OD gearing in Tacoma handles higher speed better. Lastly, for some reason the 4R seems to suffer from heat-soak pretty bad with AC - where the Tacoma is consistently colder.
I'm mainly focusing on the negatives of why I ultimately like the Tacoma better, but the 4R is still the best body-on-frame SUV you can buy. I still love the looks of it, and it's super comfortable to drive in most circumstances.

Having owned and travelled in/offroaded in 4 Land Cruisers and and an FJC over the past 28 years (owned my 80 series for over 20 years alone) we replaced the 80 with a ‘23 4Runner even with the new Lsnd Cruiser announced. The old school nature of it, the rude quality, the interior space, and most importantly the proven durability of these things is more important to us than extra technology and turbocharged power. The most recent updates in these 5th gen’s have all the modern safety and tech features I could want. From an owning and using a vehicle for 20 years type of stand point there is no other current vehicle in the market I would consider.

Had a 2021 4Runner and now a 2022 Tacoma. For hauling stuff, wife's fishing kayak and her SUP, etc. it's great. Have a high end roll up soft cover for the bed but it leaks in heavy Florida rain no matter how many times you try and seal it up. All my prior pickups with bed covers (soft and hard) all leaked. So for hauling skis, snowboards, luggage, stuff you don't want to get wet on a trip 4 Runner all the way. Probably swap out the 2023 Outback Wilderness for next gen 4Runner and keep the Taco which I love.

I owned the 2018 Tacoma then traded it for a 2021 Tacoma then traded that for a 2022 4Runner which I still own. Love the rear seat legroom so do any of the times I have had passengers versus the Tacoma. I didn't really need a truck bed so this is perfect for me plus the rear seats in the 4Runner also recline if you did not know that. Love them both.

Tacoma is better for most people who will want to do activities off the pavement. Because that truck bed will get more use than you can even imagine once you start going off-road or camping or anything rly lol. If you’re pretty much always gonna be on the pavement and occasionally want to take your truck on the beach or something the forerunner is also great but that truck is just so freaking useful for so many different things.

I own a 2016 Black 4Runner Premium 2WD with all the chrome badging and I love it. I only have 62,550 miles on it. What sold me on the 4Runner to begin with for over 25 years is the roll down back window. Growing up my parents owned a 1980 Jeep Cherokee Chief and the back window rolled down. I always thought that was the frickin coolest thing ever, so when I finally restored my credit and was making really good money I jumped head first and bought a brand new 4Runner in 2016. I have been thinking lately of trading it in on a brand new 2024 4Runner either a Limited, TRD Off-Road Premium and it will be a 4X4 this time. Figured I better get it now before they switch to turbo 4-cyl.

My buddy has a 4Runner and it’s comfortable, and very off road capable! I really like it, however I’d probably buy a Tacoma, especially a 24 with the coil sprung rear end.
The down side to the 4Runner is carrying capacity. For a day trip we bring a medium sized cooler, his recovery kit, a couple of totes of hunting gear, pew pews, and a couple small duffel bags of clothes for the weather. That fills the back space up. To get to stuff you are shifting things around and it’s kind of a pain. If there is a third person it’s even more packed. If we are camping we bring my truck because we pack more stuff. Yes, we can fold the back seats down in the 4 Runner, but it just gets tight.
With a Tacoma that stuff would lay out in the bed and be easier to access . You can have the same system as you have in your Tacoma with recovery gear, air pumps, first aid kits. Then set your cooler, totes of gear on the top. Or, you could get a shell, or a flat bed cover. There are more options for the truck.
I know you can get a roof rack, but those might limit your ability to park in the garage, or go through car washes.
It’s great to have choices because both of these vehicles are outstanding and offer fantastic off road capabilities right off the dealership floor. (You may have to upgrade the stock tires to something better suited for off roading depending on the package you purchased.)

I have a 2020 Tacoma long bed because I haul my kayak in it. Otherwise I would drive a Rav 4, which is smaller than the Forerunner. My Tacoma is a two person truck (service cab, no back seat). As a retired man, I have no need for the bigger Forerunner. I could roof carry the kayak but I am older and loading/unloading the kayak to the roof of the vehicle is a bit much for me.

The deciding factor for me was price. To get 4WD and Locking rear diffs, the Tacoma was a little less than 4runner. The 4runner made more sense for me (shorter wheelbase, enclosed storage, better ride, bigger back seats) but I got the Tacoma TRD off road. Still loving it and don't regret it btw.
I do think 4Runner makes a great complement to a taco if you already have one.

Owned about five Tacos including my latest 2020 TRD OffRoad Premium. I traded it in on a ‘23 4Runner TRD OffRoad Premium.
Everything you said in your review was spot on. I’d say plan on investing in a decent trailer if you switch to a 4R.
The 4R is MUCH more comfortable and has noticeably better acceleration.
The 4R is definitely getting an upgrade in 2025. I bought a ‘23 because I was afraid they would “ruin” the 4R with the new motors / transmission that are going into the ‘24 Taco.
Love your reviews!! You do a great job, Chloe…🇺🇸👍

I owned a 2017 4Runner and Tacoma. I prefer the 4Runner. I didn't have a use for the bed of the Taco and the 4Runner is the best stealth camping vehicle IMO. Now I own a 2020 T4R SR5. A-trac is amazing if you ever get stuck. For cruise control, and I only found this out recently, if you press and hold the cruise button it changes from adaptive cc to regular non-adaptive cc. I found the seating position in the T4R to be much more adjustable and comfortable. Like you said, it depends on the user and the use case. for me, 100% T4R. If you decide to get a 4Runner you should get an SR5 and do the suspension upgrades yourself (good content). You don't need all those off-road driver assist features, you know what you're doing. Cheers!

Such a coincidence that I bumped into this video. Im currently going back and forth with the same dilemma as well. I currently own a 23 Tacoma TRD Pro in Solar Octane, but im just in love with the 4Runner. I got offered a 24 4Runner TRD Pro in the same Terra color in the video, with a nearly $3000 reduction in MSRP. I just got my Tacoma a couple months ago, but its seems like an offer that is hard to avoid. I recently spoke to the salesman today verifying that the offer is still available. The vehicle wont be available til next month, so it gives me time to sell my Tacoma. I just cant get ripped off anymore with trade in's, especially as a title holder, and a truck in high demand.

I have both and there are many differences which many have talked about. The shorter wheel base to me makes the Tacoma better in the snow if you live in such an area.
