  • In today's video, I explore two popular options for better drivability of the Toyota Tacoma--an ECU tune (Overland Torque Tune) and a throttle enhancer (Pedal Commander)! We see how they differ and which option is best for whatever kind of driver you are.

I use the Pedal Commander with a 2.7 Tacoma and can’t imagine driving without it. I usually keep it in various city modes, but eco mode comes in very handy on snow and ice where less throttle response is desirable. The versatility for different driving situations is really nice.

Chloe! We just returned home with the OTT. I have a new truck - it really was a game changer. Very noticeable throttle response - that's the first thing we noticed. Shifting is dramatically better, especially pulling hills at highway speeds. One thing I didn't expect was how it improved idle while stopped. Also, nothing scientific, but on the way to the tune today, we were averaging about 18.5 MPG and on the way back home, it was averaging about 20 MPG. Same highway, same speeds. We went with the light/mild tune. No regrets at all. Thank you so much for the videos that helped us decide. Cheers!

Thank You for this evaluation & installation guide!! Originally I didn't think I needed it that bad for $300. I went to the site to purchase it & then left, thinking I would buy it in a couple months when I had more money. Then Pedal Commander texted me with an additional $20 off motivational discount & I went ahead & bought it. Definitely worth the money, even if it only had City mode, it's WAY better than OEM performance.

Thanks for this video. I went with the pedal commander mainly because having someone flash my brand new truck in a parking lot seemed very sketchy. Also, I installed the pedal commander in full stealth (you would have to look for it) and I just turn it off when I take the truck to the dealership for service (mostly because I don't want a tech crashing from the high pedal response). Like you, I did find the pedal commander is overy touchy and I drive at a city -3. Other than drag racing, I can't imagine needing anything in the Sport or Sport +range and for me would have been happier with more choces closer to the stock settings. Maybe I will try a tune when I am out of warranty.

Thanks very much for the comparison, as it's difficult to spend several hundred dollars on my '17 Tac Off Road w/90K miles, with so many other places my money is going lately. I'll likely do nothing to my truck as I'm now fairly used to shifting from automatic to manual mode and using the ECT button when desired, especially on my weekly climb up 7200' on I-80.
Also, thanks to the many comments regarding the Pedal Commander and similar hardware products as I didn't even consider the possibility/probability the units might go bad sooner or later. I didn't even know the Tacoma''s even had a "limp mode" and hope to never encounter it.

Depends on what your truck went in for, the dealer if they connect to the ECU can tell every time the ECU has been programed, any tuner who's tune reprograms the ECU that tells you their tune is undetectable is lying to you. Todays ECU units keep count in their memory how many times the ECU has been reprogramed and the manufactures system will know how many times they have reprogramed the ECU so if you have more ECU programing counts then the manufacture has logged in their system to your vin they can and many have voided warranties for the engine and drivetrain.
Just be aware that you might end up having to cover a major repair on your dime so don't get mad at Toyota when you installed a tune.

@@KingofPho75 Out of warranty the dealer/manufacture has any warranty to deny, so if you want a tune out of warranty then you are good to go. Many tunes will improve the engine and transmission if the tune includes transmission tune in it as well.
I tuned my 2019 Ram 1500 ecodiesel two weeks after I bought it with just 1,800 miles on the odometer, the tune was from Green Diesel Engineering and I purchased the transmission tune with the engine tune, cost me just a tad over $1,100 dollars but their tune corrected a lot of issues on the ecodiesels so for my it was worth it, but I also knew that FCA could void my powertrain warranty if they wanted to. I never had to take the truck in for any warranty service so it was never an issue but FCA was known to void warranties if they found foot prints of a tune.

Just recently, I started using it with the trailer, while traveling in Montana, where 2 lanes are 70 mph. You need to accelerate to speed quickly. The other issue is accidentally leaving the booster on, while letting it sit for 2 weeks. It will drain your battery. You need to turn it off for extended periods of not driving. Pax tecum.

My only complaints are that it's pretty jumpy in tight situations like parking lots. Also does your truck also have a high/fast idle when the engine is cold? I know this is somewhat normal, but it's pretty annoying when you factor in the tune as well. Thanks for any feedback!

Thanks for the comparison! I went with the Banks Pedal Monster because of it's fail-safe feature, and the fact it communicates with the transmission to reduce some of the driveability issues you mentioned. I wish I had known how intrusive the phone app was before committing, though. It requires questionable permissions and taps into data it has no business digging into (how does location data enhance pedal feel?). If I had it to do over again I'd probably just commit to a tune, warranty be dammed.

  • @mattlewandowski73
    @mattlewandowski73 Před 10 měsíci +18

Personally I think the thing that the thing the Pedal Commander does best is REDUCE throttle sensitivity for wheeling. In econo setting the pedal commander can do a decent job of reducing sensitivity, so it is good for helping reduce wheel spin. When everyone was going gaga over the pedal commander, I did some research, and I spoke to some P C people, and what they told me is that it is not capable of adding more power to the truck. It lets you get more throttle for a given amount of pushing the pedal. It gives you more of a kick in the seat. BUT a wheeler posted an argument in their favor, not in them letting you get faster throttle, but rather letting you reduce the amount of throttle for a given amount of pedal movement. It lets you have more control, then switch it back to normal driving conditions. A given amount of throttle opening is a given amount of throttle opening. the difference is how much pedal movement is needed.
To be fair, that wheeler changed my opinion of Pedal Commander, and other throttle tuners I had considered them to be nothing but a placebo, but you have to understand what you are actually getting. For offroading, that added control helps... the other modes... it is doing nothing in terms of added power and wether the eco mode helps your fuel economy or not is dependant on you (it won't do much if you start burying your foot in the throttle instead of half throttle when accelerating, and if you are still gunning it on the sportier modes, your economy will actually be worse). What it does is alter how the trucks responds to your driving style.
A proper tune on the other hand can also (in theory) remap air fuel ratios, remap shifting, remap throttle response, recalibrate gauges for tire size changes (though I have read that federal regulations are decreasing the amount of things tuners can adjust). Personally I would not mind both, but I would use the PC strictly for decreasing throttle sensitivity on the trail. overall, I would rather have the tune, especially once I move up to larger tires. Over all I will go the tuner route and maybe try something for on the fly desensitizing of the throttle while on the trails.

Yeah exactly, they are completely different things, it is a bit of an odd comparison. You can happily run the Pedal Commander with an ECU tune.

I don't know about the mileage because I put new tires on around the same time and just the new treads and the slightly bigger tire (still stock), the mileage changed anyway. But still love it. maybe I'll try the negative as I have not tried that yet. Thanks Chloe!

I had a pedal commander on my 2019 4runner, but after the vehicle kept going into limp mode (1-2x per week) I bought an error code reader that showed "throttle position sensor error". After I removed the PC I never had any further issues. I had previously replaced the gas cap as well and the issue persisted until I got rid of the PC and not once since. So I'd caution on the use of aftermarket electronics.

That is because all these companies with the exception of Banks PedalMonster use the 5 volts supplied to the drive by wire system to power their units. Banks is different, they engineered their PedalMonster to be powered by the OBDII port so it has a full 12 volts available to it. When your unit exceeds the 5 voltes it will throw a code, or damage the unit or worst case damage your ECU and is the result of the dreaded dead pedal. The Drive by wire system uses 4.7 to 4.8 volts on its own so that only leaves .2 to .3 of a volt to power the unit. Now you know why so many of these other brands suffer from the dreaded dead pedal.
Banks using the OBDII port allows their unit to have more information available to it and it knows what gear the truck is in as well so when you go into reverse the unit automatically reverts to the stock program so you don't end up with to much throttle when trying to back up to a trailer or something else.
Go to the Banks site and you can see the engineering they designed into their PedalMonster.

Ran Sprint Booster for two years on my new Tacoma - yes, "squishy" delayed reaction stock throttle (almost dangerous, as you have to anticipate so much while driving - or be painfully ultra conservative ) is noticeable to virtually anyone driving the truck - Sprint Booster (and the PC) solve this very well (wife says truck now is "normal" w/ the SB). However, as you point out/experienced, the Tacoma 3rd Gen still has its shifting issues, desperately and quickly trying to get one into higher gears at the expense of everything else (!). Why you ask? Folks on TW claim it's all for emissions. Ooookayyy... we'll go w/ that.
Anyway, driving the truck in rolling hill areas, often, and on cruise control, was tortuous w/ even w/ a SB (it solves only half the equation). The day I read the OTT tune can help the cruise .. I was in!
So here's my review of both solutions/aids:
Got the OTT tune (mild/medium). 2 days later I sold the Sprint Booster to a buddy w/ a brand new Tacoma. That sums it up. Truck is now very much improved and long term "livable". Also as quite a few have reported, my mpg often gets a 2 mpg boost. Bonus! Emissions - PFFFT!

It definitely changed the throttle response on my 22 tacoma But the transmission wasnt in sink with the throttle reponse in crease up shifting when you dont want it too.. Another time the trans couldnt make up its mind causing my trans to down shift and up shift with just a little increase of stepping on the pedal.. So i say no a sprint booster and / or a pc.. Now, one point I have yet to hear anyone mention is if you have a cold air intake. Which I do from Rough Country. Feeling like the truck was woken up just by adding the CAI, I notice typical of 20-40mph almost like the fuel air mixture is way off. Would either the pedal commander or a tune fix this ? That is kept in your trucks computer file which goes off of your trucks VIN number. Are you willing to pay a two or three thousand or more repair bill out of pocket when your vehicle was under warranty but you put a tune on it and now your drivetrain warranty and engine warranty are now void.

Many manufactures will have dealers look for the ECU flash count in the ECU and if it does not match the manufactures records and you have more reprograms than it should have will void your engine and drivetrain warranty on the spot. So if you reprogrammed your ECU with a tune and your transmission goes out and the dealer/manufacture sees the flash count of the ECU has more flashes than the manufacture has recorded you can kiss your warranty goodbye and you will have to pay for that $6,000 dollar transmission.

From my experience with a Pedal Commander-type gizmo, the only thing it does is increase or decrease the responsiveness of the throttle, it doesn't do anything like a tune would do.
