I think Lively's passing off of rolls is being overlooked. As he gets more minutes he can easily average 4-5 assists a gane. He is great at reading the defense after the roll abd passing to the corner or a cutter. Reminds me a kot of Joakim Noah.

      Agreed.
He’s had some exceptional kick outs off some of the PNR or slips.
He hasn’t done this consistently, but that’s because the Mavs aren’t running it enough. The Mavs have had so much success with action that gets THJ a shot or gets Luka/Kyrie in the paint or a mismatch. Hard to rely on a rookie making the smart play everytime, but in a few years they could be very dangerous.

Would be really interested in a breakdown of Tyrese Haliburton and the Pacers offense this season. Right now Hali is 2nd in OBPM and tied 1st in OWS in the league as he's boasting an incredible 24+ pts and 12+ ast on just about 2 turnovers. The Pacers themselves are7-3 with Hali on the court and first in ORTG in the league. I would really like a breakdown of his passing and playmaking and whether this offensive onslought might continue into the later parts of the season and playoffs.

With Luka and that offense, they're a legit threat. They actually got it backwards, the simplicity and potency of their offense is why they'll be so hard to beat in a series format. It's going to be hard for a lot of teams to be able to score enough in 4 out of 7 games.

Gobert is proven as a drop defender/rim patrol big but considering what the Wolves shipped out to get him, the Mavs can't match those assets while still trying to improve their margins in the future. Wolves had KAT they could extend long term and a few rookies who would end up as good role pieces to go with ANT becoming an All-NBA talent. Which is why the Mavs FA moves (Grant Williams, DJ Jr, Seth Curry returns, drafting a rim running big) seem low key but very important in filling possible roster holes.

The deepest run the Mavs had in the playoffs 2 years ago they didn't have Powell if I remember. Kleiber was key since Mavs were taking on similarly smaller lineups so he could be counted on to defend the perimeter. Just comes down to match ups because few playoff teams in the West has guys to throw at Luka *AND* have another guy to try check Kyrie one on one. So Mavs can still play their game for the most part. Adams wasn't that much of a factor against the Lakers. Even if he was there Lakers were bigger and more athletic in the front court so Adams can't stop them all. AD still gets to eat and tell the Grizz scorers its a no fly zone when he's at the rim.

Why does Cody deride the Luka/Kyrie pairing for not synergizing amazingly and "leaving meat on the bone", when aside from Steph and Klay, what star perimeter pairing has?
I don't see Tatum and Brown playing off each other at all but he never mentions that. Booker and CP3 took turns on the Suns. Harden and CP3 took turns on the Rockets. Harden and Maxey took turns. Kawhi and PG13 don't play off each other. When Lebron and Wade were on the Heat, apparently the Heat were better with Wade OFF the court.
I could go on and on but the point is made. All the star wing pairings I can think of play or played pretty independently of each other. It's tough to synergize a guard/guard like a guard/big because smalls don't typically run action with each other; that's always been a big/small thing. Ky and Luka are getting open shots because of the other, and the occasional cut off the ball.... what else does he want?
Sure I guess they could run some small PnR with each other, but that's a coaching decision as much as a player one. Guard/Guard just isn't a natural synergistic pairing like a Guard/Big is. This seems to bear out universally, not just on the Mavs.
Cody seems to apply a very high level of standard for Luka with other guards but never points to where else this standard is being met. It makes him come off with some confusing anti-Luka bias.

its all dependent on lukas decision making. They basically have him running QB with all his reads idk how u scheme any better for playoffs when what they're running isn't that complex. The success of it all falls on the decision making and play of luka and if the shooters can make the open shot or capitalize on the closeouts and attack. Its why you seen DJJ having such a great start. Hes attacking on close outs and if they don't close he has a wide open 3 on the wing. Its almost like teams have to really bother luka enough or hope he has an off night or that the shooters around are having an off night.

I think what Cody is forgetting when he's talking about DAL's offensive sets likely becoming easy to scheme for, is, similar to TB's point, the "Luka of the situation."
While showing the same actions is not ideal for an offense, a defense cannot simply scheme a player like Luka... or even Kyrie. Regardless of how well an action is guarded, Luka is too savvy to get boxed in by a defense's scheme. He's constantly setting up his defender, as well as off-ball defenders, to move in ways he's able to take advantage of. It's a visceral thing for him, and he's constantly analyzing a defense's leverage and reacting to it. If they shut down the initial play, he will find how to counter it.

    We’ve seen these teams either:
-get a lot of second chance points
    -contest Luka’s step back 3s
-blitz Luka/Ky the entire game and have the speed/length to play the passing lanes very aggressively
I think the Mavs are one quality big man away from going to the next level.

The problem is the playoffs. The Mavericks have built their entire team of 3-point shooters. This works in the regular season when offensives are not strategizing their defenses yet and you have the luxury of 82 games. During the playoffs, you have 7 games, and the 3-point percentage drastically drops at one point or another. What will the other players outside of Doncic do when that happens. Also, their offense is helio-centric. You must run an offense like the Kings, Warriors, or Nuggets to succeed.

the casual fan boys that started watching in 2018 fall in love with the individual inflated and at time somewhat empty stats and who they can pick for fantasy basketball so they want just one guy who is Doncic getting all the credit and stats cause they are fanboys and they also always draft Doncic first in Fantasy stats basketball. They really don't care about the Mavericks Infact they would rather them miss the playoffs if Doncic can get a lot of stats and losses. Yet it's funny cause all those fanboys always lose in fantasy basketball cause they don't look at the two most important stats in the game of basketball STEALS AND BLOCKS You can't fake Hustle, STEALS AND BLOCKS. They also do poorly in Rebound Stats and FG% stats overall.

    • @t4d0W

You aren't wrong with your last statement but the Mavs weren't exactly dealt the most ideal hand to be as aggressive in the FA/draft. I still feel the Kings are an optimal regular season team but will get spanked with the wrong playoff match up. Fox dropped some big numbers in the middle of the series but when it goes to 6/7 games, I don't think he's got the stuff to go into a shootout with bonafide scorer under the bright lights like Steph. There is one thing to be a 3-ball chucking team in the regular season and shooting for below average % in the playoffs. There is another to be like how the Heat were in the playoffs last season where against the Bucks and the Celtics, their 3-ball percentage was stupid high for the series and was instrumental in pushing them past those match ups. So Mavs may try turn into that kind of team for the playoffs. Another thing is Mavs can pay grindy too with Luka just playing PnRs to death and getting efficient baskets. As well with Kyrie being able to buy a bucket in big game situations. They are more balanced than you think but they are most certainly a top heavy reliant offense.

The offensive scheme is nearly perfect for the roster. Luka NEEDS the ball to do his magic. He is not Steph. He is not a role player. He is the Peyton Manning of the Mavs offense. You draw up a dozen plays. And let him feel out the correct choice. The defense will pick their posion.
When he is off the court is going to be the breaking point of the Mavs. But wait, Kyrie is can run the EXACT same offensive scheme. They both slash, the both are 3 level threats, the both are amazing passers and they both have an insane game IQ. The offense needs to move more slowly to eat time and make up for defensive short comings. This is why I made the Peyton comparison as well. It's not that they are bad defensively. They just aren't great. So quietly eat up a whole 1/4 of the game with offensive dominant performance. Others may make a tikka-takka comparison. You don't need a defense so much if you have the ball on offense and your shot % on high value shots is among the best ever

The problem with rolling bigs stupid term because everybody in the NBA is huge and big but anyways the only problem with rolling bigs is that there's science out there that says they get injured more. I don't know why I guess maybe because they're running way more than even the guards are running because they have to go to the rim and they have to run back to the three-point line and then have to run back to the rim and then I have to run back to the three-point line and they just do this over and over until somebody gets a shot. It Eventually runs them ragged is the science Eventually they wear out or eventually the center fills out and becomes 250 lb like they should be and that doesn't work you have to post a center up once they're 250 lb you have to have a hook shot even kareem Abdul-Jabbar how to hook shot Way back in 1970 have we not advanced at all since 1970 seriously.

It is going to be very hard to defend even in the playoffs as there is basically no human that can defend that Luka dude one on one. And Lively needs to be taken into account... And once you got those two bases covered with probably 4 defenders, there is a certain Kyrie Irving roaming around open and free and he's been known to fill a stat sheet with the best of them... Every other top team has the same situation of beating the bad teams and losing to good ones right now. Only 12 games into the season so far.

Agree. But last year, they could not even beat the bad teams consistently. Mavs team improved a lot.

Mavs normally lose to bad teams and wake up for the good teams so this is actually a good sign

@@jogunsanthat has literally scientifically never been the case as a history they've always destroyed bad teams and then played well against good teams now they destroy bad teams and they lose to good teams been that way for the last six seasons except for last season where they just lost to everybody. Truth is Luca hasn't really been on national TV that much which is kind of weird it seems like the league is purposely not putting Dallas on national TV because Dirk was on national TV every single night back in TNT was good you know back in 01 or 02 03 all those years. However Luka doncic is literally like 10% in national TV games. Meaning he only wins one out of 10. Now they flip opposite of that is that Durk would actually play better on national TV and against better teams like the Lakers and the Celtics and the and the jazz and the the kings were god back then Dirk on national TV averages like 38 points per game on like 70% shooting it's absurd and he has a record on national TV of like 90% of his games he won

2:20 if Luka looks better physically to you guys this year... imagine if he ever gets remotely fit...the horror 🤣.
Seriously, I used to lost one and a half kg in a couple hours of playing pick up when I was his age. How the hell is this guy looking like he won the golden ticket to Willy Wonka's factory every season?? I can't even begin to understand it

Unless they keep the rims loose and they keep making 50% of their long step back threes

Kyrie Irving will take a leave of absence, for some Idiotic reason, like always, and the Mavericks will be screwed. You can guarantee it

He's already missed 3 games so far and the Mavs haven't missed a beat. They are def better with him. Unlike you I don't think Kyrie will have any issues in Dallas.

You do realize that literally not one player in the NBA plays 80 games now you do realize that right even even Nikola jokic who's who's the most perfect person in the world he even misses 30 games. Literally who is your favorite player who was anyone's favorite player who is your favorite player dude you're you're such a little Mike pence little little Democrat punk okay who is your favorite player I guarantee he will miss 90 games this season 90 he will miss all 82 and then he will miss it the 10 games in the playoffs of that team plays so there he will miss 90 games this season your favorite player

Derrick lively is gonna start punishing people in the paint as he gets older. It’s not looking good for the league
